Lily Allen, Oasis, Gene Simmons Backlash Against Radiohead’s “Rainbows”

11/14/07, 4:55 pm EST

As the January 3rd release date of the compact-disc version of Radiohead’s In Rainbows draws nearer, several artists have finally elected to open up about Rainbows‘ creative marketing strategy. (Or rather, how Radiohead pissed them off by thinking outside the box.) First up, the immutable Lily Allen, who tells Rolling Stone Radiohead are “arrogant.” “They’ve got millions of pounds. It sends a weird message to younger bands who haven’t done as well,” Allen reasoned. “You don’t choose how to pay for eggs. Why should it be different for music?” Little does Allen know, you do choose how to pay for eggs. You can use cash or credit, or checks if you have photo ID. We could discuss supply and demand and how bands make money off live shows and merch sales, but until Lily Allen can find us an egg that wrote “Paranoid Android,” we’re not even starting that fight.

Next up is Oasis‘ Liam Gallagher, who denies the reports that followed Radiohead’s September 30th announcement that indicated Oasis would try a similar scheme for their next album. Gallagher insists that he would never give away an Oasis album for free, and that something like that would only happen “over my dead body.” Even Kiss‘ Gene Simmons took time out of his busy writing-about-prostitutes schedule to intelligently discuss Radiohead’s course. “That’s not a business model that works. I open a store and say ‘Come on in and pay whatever you want.’ Are you on fucking crack? Do you really believe that’s a business model that works?” The outburst also spurred Simmons to ask his lawyers if he could produce Kiss-branded crack. Simmons does kind of ask an interesting question: Is this a business model that works? We won’t know until either Radiohead reveals how much money they made from their “pay-what-you-want” plan or the week after the CD hits stores and we get our hands on the charts.

I think all these Big stars make way to much money in the first place… think about it there mostley young kids that dont know how to manage money.. and there makeing more money in one paycheck then most people in there whole lives. take miley cyrus for example… she makes 18.5 million doallars a year and she is 15!!!! Yes singers are paid way too much, someone that was just born lucky and doesnt have to do shit cause of there “talents”. i think doctors and teachers should be paid way more then they should cause they actually work their asses off and go to school for long periods of time… and barely get payed shit comepared to these people…

Thom_yorkerfc | 5/4/2008, 11:45 am EST

Lily Allen has to be the most annoying woman in Britain at the moment, mockney rubbish, even worse than Kate Nash.

I like Oasis but they are way past their peak.

As for Radiohead - the innovators - untouchable. They make beautiful, great music and are the ultimate alternative band as they produce albums not to make money or have “hits” but in the hope they will appreciated as masterpieces.

It was a great publicity stunt by Radiohead and put the two fingers upto the music industry, surely thats what true indie bands should be doing.

Anna | 1/19/2008, 8:34 pm EST

Oh, and comparing music to eggs has to be the most uneducated analogy I’ve heard in a long while. If music was as disposable and homogeneous as eggs are, then that analogy may have worked.

Anna | 1/19/2008, 8:24 pm EST

This is a good example of how money has spoiled the music industry. Why do they assume that this is a marketing scheme aimed at making money? If you take the time to look at the evidence, you’ll find that it seems to be less motivated by money and more motivated by the desire for their music to be heard. Money-making appears to be more incidental than anything. And the fact that they put the cd’s in paper envelopes so that they could be sold at a cheaper price (and provided the buyer with stickers for a jewel case if they wanted one) proves even further that they don’t care about the money. I imagine that, with all the money they make from touring, they don’t really give a crap how much they make from record sales anymore. Good on them for figuring it out. Maybe other artists will follow suit instead of being greedy whores like a lot of them are nowadays.

tastytone | 12/10/2007, 6:44 pm EST

Yes ladies and germs…it’s Gene Simmons (again)!–well paid or not, a joke in every way. Doesn’t their new “just in time for Kissmas” box-set come with an official Kiss Army toilet brush or something? What price is your soul worth? He and Paul Stanley are absolute clowns…great salesmen? Absolutely! Artists in any way, shape or form? Absolutely NOT. Pure lead-painted product. “Dear KISS, I loved you when I was seven, but that was thirty years ago. Please make like the Cabbage Patch Kids and retire from the public eye you geriatric, poncey whores. You are the Ronald McDonalds of rock-n-roll (makeup, et,al), and the epitome of the waste that record companies will shove on us”.

KISS my Ass | 11/20/2007, 5:59 pm EST

Gene Simmons needs to wake up and pull his dick out of that stinky old whore hes in. He said he had no desire to make new music because of the state of the music industry but I think its because hes always been a talentless hack. The only reason hes ever made any money was because he had a gimmick and an industry to extort money out of the ignorant college kids hes now dogging. I think hes just upset that the college kids of today are smart enough to not buy his crappy excuse for music.

GentleGiant | 11/20/2007, 2:59 pm EST

Well, we will see who is right or wrong in the future. I understand that Gene Simmons and many others don’t want to listen about free downloads or fans deciding what to pay.
But any artist is free to do whatever they want to their intellectual property, music, as long as they don’t have a contract signed that says otherwise… and in many cases that’s what happens. But as long as they are contract free…
I reckon that they might have a point, Gene and others when they say what they say, but I feel that they’re thinking the old fashion way. They should stop and wait to see before saying anything. It might happen that they are wrong…
Today, internet gives a lot of visibility. And for a known band, it can be used to recruit new fans and keep the old ones excited. Just a click… Guys like me will always buy the CD or Boxes or whatever because we can and because we like to have it, to touch it, to play it and open the booklet… and if they were cheaper I would buy even more!
But a lot of youngsters can’t afford it so with ideas like these they have the possibility to get it for free or name their price. I bet that if the CD’s were cheaper many downloads would never happen… Who wants to have a computer file instead of the real thing? I don’t!
Anyway, we mustn’t forget the shows. Any old fan will want to see them perform live. Their performances are mythical! And the same for new fans who just discovered them. So a known band like Radiohead or Oasis or KISS will always make a lot of money from that. Because they are known, because they are good in what they do, because they have tons of fans dieing to see them live.
And by the way, Oasis might be jerks but they have songs that rock. And that’s what matters. KISS are not my favorite within the same genre and Lily Allen I’ve never heard. I didn’t even know that she existed… who is she?… a Led Zeppelin fan? Well, that’s not very difficult… By the way, did you see the price of the tickets for the reunion concert? That’s mental… even for music legends… that’s not honest. But like anyone, they are free to do what they want with their intelectual property and we are free to choose to go, or not…

paul stanley | 11/19/2007, 5:21 pm EST

let gene go back to doing what he does best:calling for the extermination of the Palestinian people…

F Off | 11/19/2007, 3:07 pm EST

This is about music, not money. These so called ‘artists’ have forgotten what it means to make music for the sake of making music.

Oasis can burn in hell.

DrJ | 11/19/2007, 12:14 pm EST

Wow…is there any subject that Gene Simmons doesn’t have a completely ignorant opinion on?

thewufs | 11/18/2007, 9:17 pm EST

“If you look at the sales of KISS albums Vs the sales of radiohead albums you would know who really is irrelevant. Radiohead could not give away the amount of albums KISS has sold. Gene may be an ASS with no musical talent but the numbers speak for themselves.”

Damn right Gene Simmons is “relevant” - heck, he’s almost as “relevant” as Celine Dion and Kenny G! Never underestimate the P.T. Barnum of rock and roll, a man who has about as much respect for the music as he does for the drooling masses. Somebody give this man a cigar!

And ditto everything “Lupe” said. I mean, isn’t there some way to deport this showbiz creep? Him and Donald Trump both?

Jared | 11/18/2007, 6:54 am EST

THey Made on average $2 per download which is twice what they would have made if they released it through a label. Not to mention it’s actually great and smartly written music (math nerds pay attention to the song structure). ‘Reckoner’ is my favorite song and I paid for the album, so if it was a publicity stunt, it worked, if it is a business model it also worked.

Wake up and smell the future, Mr. Simmonds, Ms. Allen, Ms. Gallagher…

god | 11/17/2007, 9:33 pm EST

Are they stupid this was a brilliant marketing plan not only did radiohead make millions off the download release but now they are going to be making even more money off the actual release of the cd because fans of there’s are going to buy it to support them but also to get a better quality disc of songs also there going to be making money off the 80 dollar boxset so if Gene “The Moron” Simmons doesn’t think its smart he is a complete idiot and also lily allen wishes she had fans that are as die hard for her as they are for Radiohead and Oasis are complete shit so they can’t even talk i guess all the haters are just jealous that they aren’t as talented as Thom,Jonny,Ed,Colin and Phil

GentleGiant | 11/17/2007, 9:03 am EST

Man, it’s their album, their product, their intellectual property so they can do whatever they want. They are giving it for free or ask you to name your price. And you’re criticizing that? Are you telling that if the store next door gives you the eggs for free you would accept it just because it’s not the way business works?
Man, you really suck…
The more we get for free the better.
They will tour anyway and make a lot of money from that. And if the ones who like their free songs go to the shows, they are paying it. Maybe they will go because they listened to the songs because they were for free…
It’s their songs they can do whatever they want.
If KISS or whoever were giving their records for free you wouldn’t accept? … I doubt that.
A lot of persons don’t listen to a lot of music because it’s not cheap to buy CDs. Fortunately I can buy and I don’t download, I buy CDs. But a lot of folks can’t afford them… So yeah, Radiohead are doing a nice thing. An original thing. A new thing.

Anonymous | 11/16/2007, 8:22 pm EST

I’m surprised no one tried it. We should have asked Radiohead to pay ‘us’ to download their music. This way we can buy tons of coffee to keep awake while we play their music.

Ham On Rye | 11/16/2007, 12:57 pm EST

Gene’s a dick and the least important part of KISS. It’s Paul’s band.

His songs are totally superior to Gene’s. Every one of Gene’s songs are arrogant “I’m God and my love slave” crap!

Ace has better songs than Gene. “Cold Gin alone is a makes him greater, not to mention all the rockin’ stellar songs he wrote for Dynasty.

Ace, Peter, and Paul are the sound of the band. Gene just plods along with his “plunk plunk plunk” bass playing. And Gene is the one who’s constantly kicking Ace and Peter out.

It’s not becuase they have “addiction issues”; it’s because Gene’s a control freak, and he has to have everything his way. Fuck Gene!

Rockstar70 | 11/16/2007, 9:51 am EST

You guys are just mad that Gene S
Simmons Slept with your mom on the ‘75 ALIVE tour!!!
I’ll bet she still has the T-shirt!!

Dood | 11/15/2007, 10:05 pm EST

Goddamn, people are dumb.

The Radiohead thing was a PUBLICITY STUNT, and a brilliant one at that. Now, everyone everywhere knows they have a new cd coming out.

You’ll notice, the first sentence of this article is yet another plug for it.

People that actually belive bands are going to start putting new music up to download, and you pay or not, ARE on crack.

STOP WHINING! | 11/15/2007, 6:01 pm EST

I am only too glad to see whiny biches like that get their panties in a twist. ‘I DONT LIKE THAT RADIOHEAD GIVES PEOPLE MORE CHOICES FOR BUYING THEIR MUSIC!’ Cry more bitc.

Wilcorules | 11/15/2007, 4:53 pm EST

Radiohead rocks. Gene Simmons had done nothing incredible. He is untalented and should get off Radiohead’s back. It is their album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wilcorules | 11/15/2007, 4:52 pm EST

Radiohead is one of the greatest bands ever and Kiss is terrible. I wouldn’t be talking Gene, its not your album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!

James | 11/15/2007, 4:35 pm EST

Wow. Criticism from a pop star, an irrelevant band from the 90’s, and someone who used to prance around on stage in clown makeup and high heeled boots. “Videotape” is greater than the careers of these three combined.

strada | 11/15/2007, 4:04 pm EST

Gene is the Lord of Rock and a business genius! Deal with it…none of you can breathe fire!

Anonymous | 11/15/2007, 3:07 pm EST

Does anyone care about these people?

Kiss music suxxx

Oasis only had 2 good albums

Lily Allen, she’s the one that says i don’t want to be Britney Spears, and now is on a diet just to be modeling lingerie

So…whatever
Opinio n of 2 corpses on the music industry n’ a nobody wannabe pop star

Lupe | 11/15/2007, 2:14 pm EST

Gene Simmons should do the world a favor and bury himself in a Kiss brand coffin, with a Kiss brand shovel, with Kiss certified dirt, in the St. Kiss cemetary, on Kiss island, accessable only by the Kiss-copter. Also please buy his new book, old books, album after album of terrible live shows, album after album of terrible studio produced music, tickets to reunion show after reunion show, endless runs of action figures, lunch boxes, pins, silverware, posters, etc. If he were around when Dante wrote the Inferno, his punishment in hell would be drowning in merchandise. I fucking hate Gene Simmons, and to a slight less degree I hate everything that Kiss has and will do. FUCK GENE SIMMONS.

Rockstar70 | 11/15/2007, 1:49 pm EST

If you look at the sales of KISS albums Vs the sales of radiohead albums you would know who really is irrelevant. Radiohead could not give away the amount of albums KISS has sold. Gene may be an ASS with no musical talent but the numbers speak for themselves. Radiohead, Coldplay, lilly Allen, The Strokes and libertines can Kiss off that stuff BLOWs!!!

taylor | 11/15/2007, 12:35 pm EST

so funny, u know, radiohead are trying NOT to be arrogant by showing that they know they have enough money and rather than asking for more, they are giving out their album so it’ll be accessible to everyone rather than releasing it so that it costs a lot of money….why can’t we just all love music..and plus they say this stuff when now they are releasing it on CD…..i mean, come on, get over urselfs…they are just trying to get their music to everyone since they are clearly not as “good” as KISS or Oasis, or Lily Allen( she sux by the way, she is more arrogant then Oasis).

all i have to say, In Rainbows rules, it’s really genius.

Anne | 11/15/2007, 11:54 am EST

I second that Pixies…..please do go away, I’ll still keep Oasis though

Jughead | 11/15/2007, 10:57 am EST

Gene Simmons can KISS my ass.

I am the egg man | 11/15/2007, 10:57 am EST

I dont like lily allen, but I will support what i think she meant to say, which is that you dont go to the store and say you’ll pay a dime for eggs. You pay whatever the price is or you dont buy them

DUDEYO | 11/15/2007, 10:02 am EST

They are talking about as if this is going to be the greatest all time seller. WE are talking about
radio who yea now what. I don’t know there numbers for sales but do know enough to say they will probably not get out of the gate.
Peace out.

j | 11/15/2007, 9:05 am EST

What’s radiohead?

Dave | 11/15/2007, 8:42 am EST

Whether or not this qualifies as a repeatable business model, there’s no question that it was a successful one time venture.

Jhonny | 11/15/2007, 4:58 am EST

Let’s face it, Radiohead miss up, they need it to do this to survive, now is backclash!!

jimbo jones | 11/15/2007, 2:45 am EST

note to self: download copies of every kiss, lily allen and oasis cd for free. give the finger to the greedy labels who have been screwing us for years. delete and repeat. then i think i’ll keep on buying music from the bands that i care about as i have been all along.

Dort | 11/14/2007, 8:49 pm EST

I’m with everyone else. These three just sound like morons. It’s a great gesture to the fans the way Radiohead released their album, and also, like Lily Allen’s dumbass said, “they have millions of pounds.” Radiohead obviously understood they don’t really need more money for the time being, so why not release the way they want.

danny | 11/14/2007, 8:05 pm EST

Who the fuck is Lily Allen? No, seriously? Gene Simmons couldn’t comprehend real music when he was supposedly in a “band”…. it was more like a monkey fucking a football. Having him critique Radiohead is like having KISS do another tour — it’s not relevant and nobody cares.

Metal Shawn G | 11/14/2007, 7:34 pm EST

i think more than anything else, it shows how many “fans” that radiohead really has. how can they just rob from radiohead, especially right to their faces? that’s really fucked.

jill hives | 11/14/2007, 7:19 pm EST

if the record companies aren’t going to work with technology trends and the consumer (which is why they are dying), then bands must.
radiohead are rich, many of their fans aren’t. new cd’s cost almost twenty bucks these days, and many don’t even have one good song on them.
i respect the achievements of the above celebrity critics, but believe that radiohead is making a smart move that more and more artists (both well-known and not) will begin to emulate.
that his all.

mattgee | 11/14/2007, 6:42 pm EST

it’s radiohead’s god damn album, they can sell how ever the hell they want to. they bypassed the record companies with an independent online release, now all these other wash ups are getting pissy. this is the greatest thing to happen to this industry in a long time, who cares what gene simmons thinks about it.

Skull F-ing is a problem | 11/14/2007, 6:34 pm EST

Gene Simmons’ cultural relevance left long ago and that fact that this magazine reports anything he says is a shame. As for Lilly Allen, when she has a 2nd or 3rd hit in the US, then maybe I’ll listen to her.

Go Finger bang yourselves

ugh | 11/14/2007, 6:09 pm EST

Lily Allen is a brat and makes mediocre music at best. so she should shut her trap before someone decides to do it for her.

Its Radiohead’s music; Let them distribute it however they like. At least they’re not comparing memorable pieces of art to something that comes out of a chicken’s ass, or selling out at an astronomical level by putting out pinball machines, action figures, stationery, poorly acted movies and a dreaded disco album.

Melanie | 11/14/2007, 5:23 pm EST

In response to Gene Simmons, I must say: it was never a business model, it was a publicity stunt! Anyone who thinks it’s a business model needs to go read the Lefsetz Letter.
