New Music Tuesdays: The Hives

11/13/07, 8:47 am EST

The Swedish five-piece that promises to become “your new favorite band” at live shows is back with another album of tracks that turn up the volume on Sixties garage rock and Seventies punk. Aside from two Pharrell-produced songs, not too much is different on the Hives’ The Black and White Album, which means fans of the act’s consistently fun, brash and cartoonish sound will be pleased with their fourth full-length. For Joe Levy’s full review, click above to watch the video, and read the review for the album right here.

Joe,
It’s not “Tick TOCK Boom”-get the name of the single right, at least.
The whole review was insufferably long. At least The Hives do it in 2 1/2 minutes, rock you to death, and then get out…

gotta see them live!!!!

Really? I’m supposed to believe this review is credible even after he says Tick TOCK Boom? Guess all it takes to be a critic is to know what the band did on previous albums. Who said the Hives had to do something new?

Thank you for dissecting the complex meaning behind the title of The Black and White Album. I’m not sure I could have figured that out on my own, without your years of accrued music expertise. While you’re at it, get a f’ing haircut, hippie.

i saw the Hives play in San Diego on Saturday night. Wow, what a show! These guys are one of the best live acts i’ve seen.

This has to be the worst “New Music Tuesday” segment I’ve seen. First, it didn’t add anything different from what was in the written review. Also, it was very condescending. For Hives fans and music fans who aren’t familiar with The Hives. Didn’t anybody look at the clip before they posted online? Seriously, I can understand how someone could say “Tick Tock Boom” one time, but not all through the segment.

For the album itself, I’ve been listening to it all day. It’s a great rock album. They prove that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel to be musically interesting or engaging. Too bad, critics like Joe Levy perfer to slobber over the lastest bloops and bleeps by Radiohead than to appreciate straight ahead rock and roll.

This is the first Hives album I got. I bought this album on a whim, because it was on sale. Also, I’ve heard “Tick Tick Boom” on various sporting shows and was impressed with the song. I like the album enough to get their other albums when I can.

JP, what you said is idiotic re: Radiohead. If you think they are little more than blops and bleeps, you very likely haven’t listened to “In Rainbows,” or “Hail to the Thief” for that matter. The Hives are great, but sheesh.

JP | 11/15/2007, 6:22 pm EST

Sorry Sean, I’m just not impressed with the post-”OK Computer” Radiohead. They are no longer performing songs. It’s just sound collages with random lyrics thrown in. I’ve heard some their tracks. Some sounds interesting, but to me it’s not as good as what they did in the past.

The point I was trying to make was that Joe Levy wasn’t enthusiatic about The Hives new album because it “didn’t break new ground”. My stance is: You don’t have to break new ground to write great music. All it have to do is to reach people and move them. Which I think what The Hives have done successfully with “The Black & White Album” and what Radiohead have failed to do after “The Bends”.
