Rock List: Led Zeppelin Dream Setlist

11/12/07, 4:36 pm EST

Last week, with the Led Zeppelin reunion concert less than a month away, we asked you, Zep Nation, to help draw up a dream Led setlist. Jimmy Page said recently that the show would feature “a lot of songs that people would want to hear,” which roughly translates into Zeppelin playing all their albums and maybe half of Coda. So we shortened the list. After tabulating all the votes, we’ve decided that this (surprisingly In Through the Out Door-free) setlist would serve as the perfect show on December 10th at London’s O2 Arena:

“Immigrant Song”
“Black Dog”
“Ramble On”
“The Rain Song”
“No Quarter”
“Dazed & Confused”
“Misty Mountain Hop”
“In The Light”
“In My Time of Dying”
“Bring It On Home”
“Babe I’m Gonna Leave You”
“Whole Lotta Love”
“Kashmir”

Encores:
“Stairway To Heaven”
“When The Levee Breaks”
“The Ocean”

bah! | 11/12/2007, 4:39 pm EST

no since i’ve been lovin’ you?!

bah!

Pork Chop | 11/12/2007, 4:45 pm EST

Where’s “Baba O’Riley” on that list? C’mon!

Vegetarian | 11/12/2007, 4:57 pm EST

Baba O’Riley is a Who song.
but good try.

chris | 11/12/2007, 5:09 pm EST

needs Achilles Last Stand, and i don’t know if i’d put Ramble On so early. I’d also throw Heartbreaker in between Immigrant and Black Dog.

eric | 11/12/2007, 5:14 pm EST

in the light’s a good fucking call.
i’ll be there.
and i’ll be paying for it for the next year…

Anonymous | 11/12/2007, 5:15 pm EST

i agree with the others heartbreaker, since ive been lovin you and achilles last stand should all be there. by the way why is in the light in there? its not that bad of a song but c’mon zeppelin’s got way better songs

Saxon | 11/12/2007, 5:26 pm EST

Where’s Since I’ve Been Lovin’ You, Tangerine, Good Times Bad Times, and The Song Remains The Same?! Any one of those could replace In The Light and No Quarter!

Also start the encores with Rock and Roll! CLOSE with Stairway!

As a New Orleanian, I gotta say drop When The Levee Breaks…too painful, don’t ever want to hear it again.

good thinking | 11/12/2007, 6:04 pm EST

over the hills and far away

Kevin | 11/12/2007, 6:06 pm EST

I’d like to hear Nobody’s Fault But Mine if I attended, and I think Black Dog would be a better opener than the Immigrant Song; imagine Plant’s voice erupting over the deafening cheers.

D’yer Maker will probably make an appearance at some point in the middle of the show, and I think that stairway has to be the final encore.

Also, how about Heartbreaker or Dancing Days somewhere in there?

Ham On Rye | 11/12/2007, 7:12 pm EST

Immigrant Song #1? Surprised. Good song, not a great one.

Jessie | 11/12/2007, 7:14 pm EST

Okay, obviously those are all great songs but i think Tangerine, All My Love, What is and What should Never be, and Custard Pie should really be included somewhere…if nothing else DEFINITELY All My Love because Plant’s vocals and lyrics are definitely at his best

Jessie | 11/12/2007, 7:25 pm EST

ALSO I think In My Time of Dying would be an awesome opener slash it should be addd in general…The Rover too for that matter.

Spencer | 11/12/2007, 7:48 pm EST

what about that’s the way, bron-yr-aur stomp, going to california or tangerine?

Acs | 11/12/2007, 9:06 pm EST

rock and roll?
“it’s been a long time since i rock and rolled”
good opener

The Gangsta Of Love | 11/12/2007, 9:17 pm EST

Trampled Underfoot, was, well,
trampled underfoot?
Clearly, another bogus call.

ann wilson | 11/12/2007, 9:25 pm EST

“dog and butterfly” in the acoustic interlude.

Anonymous | 11/12/2007, 9:43 pm EST

o man there best performance was always with since ive been loving you.

also

trampled underfoot

nobodys fault but mine

dont think studio zeppelin..

live zeppelin is a totaly different experiance.

Anonymous | 11/12/2007, 9:44 pm EST

dont forget that this is not studio zeppelin.

live zeppelin is a totaly different experiance.

so the most important live zeppelin song is needed

since ive been loving you.

Iowa Zep Fan | 11/12/2007, 10:13 pm EST

When the Levee breaks would be awesome…but never happen. They only played it once…Chicago ‘75. I’ve heard the bootleg and it sucked. I agree with Anonymous…this ain’t studio Zep.

Where the fuck is In the Evening?!

And to leave Since I Been Lovin’ You off is blasphemy!!

Iowa Zep Fan | 11/12/2007, 10:16 pm EST

Wait a second…where the fuck is Rock n’ Roll?!!! You don’t think that’s what they’ll open with?

No Trampled Underfoot?!!!

Carlos | 11/12/2007, 10:40 pm EST

How Many More Times…?

Mr Bungle | 11/12/2007, 10:57 pm EST

How ’bout What Is And What Should Never Be or Living Loving Maid (She’s Just A Woman) at least in a medley.

larry buchas | 11/12/2007, 10:59 pm EST

i’ll give it a 7 out of 10. i think immigrant song is a great choice, given current circumstances. and thank you for dropping “stairway”.

but i saw many votes for achilles last stand.

FrankieJ @ SugarLoaf MI | 11/12/2007, 11:02 pm EST

Since I’ve Been Loving You has to be there. That is my favorite blues of all time, and there’s a whole lotta blues to be had. Plus, you can hear Bonzo’s bass drum pedal squeaking on that song on the album. Listen carefully to the first minute or so of Stevie Wonder’s Superstition and you will hear exactly the same squeak–Ludwig Speed King, not lubricated on a regular basis. I play one, and when I’ve not lubed it when it needs it, it sounds exactly the same :-) Oh, yeah, Bonham is the reason I traded my 22″ kick for a 26″!!!

Gonzo Serj | 11/12/2007, 11:41 pm EST

I think “The Lemon Song” is a very underrated tune that would sound awesome live

And “Over the Hills and Far Away” should definitely replace “No Quarter” on this list…shit, I’d almost rather hear a whiny maroon 5 song than “No Quarter”…almost

A | 11/13/2007, 12:16 am EST

I THINK THEY MIGHT AS WELL PLAY THEM ALL

cd | 11/13/2007, 1:30 am EST

rock and roll – should be on there but can anyone play that song like bonahm did i really dont think so..

heart breaker- really really think this one should be played, its page at his finest

Jon | 11/13/2007, 2:59 am EST

As long as “Misty Mountain Hop” is on there… in reality, one has to factor in the present condition of Plant’s voice to REALLY know how they’re gonna pace this thing.

Jon | 11/13/2007, 3:02 am EST

Also interesting: All these years later, RS is referring to “Zep Nation” – `twasn’t always the case, when the magazine was routinely ripping Zep’s albums in review! Glad you finally came around.

Jenna | 11/13/2007, 4:43 am EST

that baba o’reily comment was a joke, right?
I would really love to see “tangerine” and “that’s the way” thrown in there… “over the hills and far away” would also round things out a bit more… and black dog to open, stairway to close.

Cheesecrop | 11/13/2007, 6:33 am EST

“Good Times, Bad Times” should open the show. It’s the very first song you ever could have heard had you followed the band from the beginning. If this is in fact their final show, it should lead off once again.

ohwell | 11/13/2007, 6:38 am EST

If they can somehow work up the energy, they could easily choose at least 15 more songs, including Baba O’Riley, “if” they are preparing for a 3-4 hour concert.

swee | 11/13/2007, 9:32 am EST

uh, where is Bron-Y-Aur Stomp? classic zep people!

B | 11/13/2007, 9:54 am EST

Houses of the Holy???

Mule | 11/13/2007, 9:54 am EST

Here’s my dream list – not only faves, but with pacing and whatnot factored in. It’s probably too long, but hey, that’s a nice problem to have:

ROCK AND ROLL
IMMIGRANT SONG
HEARTBREAKER
BLACK DOG
OVER THE HILLS AND FAR AWAY
SINCE I’VE BEEN LOVING YOU
TRAMPLED UNDERFOOT
NO QUARTER
Acoustic set:
GOIN’ TO CALIFORNIA
BRON-Y-AUR STOMP
RAMBLE ON (yep, an all acoustic version as a treat to fans)
BLACK COUNTRY WOMAN
Back to electric:
MISTY MOUNTAIN HOP
NOBODY’S FAULT BUT MINE
IN MY TIME OF DYING
DAZED AND CONFUSED
STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN

encore:
DANCING DAYS
WHOLE LOTTA LOVE

…Just my list – to each his own. Rock on, Zep!

Mule | 11/13/2007, 9:59 am EST

…and no, I did not include anything from “In Through The Out Door” either, and not even on purpose! What does that say? I dunno.

DrJ | 11/13/2007, 10:27 am EST

Has anybody considered the limitations of age? For the show not to be lame, they really need to leave out anything with those wailing high notes old Robert can’t hit anymore, which would mean…a really mellow, bluesy set that people would consider lame anyway…

david huret | 11/13/2007, 10:43 am EST

calm down everyone,it’s only another reunion of (admittedly highly talented) grand dads, the like of which we’ve seen countless times (Police,Eagles,…).Plus,it’s not either the first time Led Zep reform.Remember 1985,1988,1995 and Page&Plant’s adventures?

Nello | 11/13/2007, 12:31 pm EST

Nice list Mule…I second your choices!

Thundercrotch | 11/13/2007, 12:31 pm EST

Ten Years Gone.

It’s got 317 guitar parts and I want Page to play them all at once and then spontaneously explode like Daffy Duck at the end of the talent show episode.

T | 11/13/2007, 12:38 pm EST

anyone up for tangerine??

T | 11/13/2007, 12:38 pm EST

anyone up for tangerine??

maybe going to california??

or wait over the hills and far away??

Rockstar70 | 11/13/2007, 1:45 pm EST

It really doesn’t matter what they play most of us won’t see it unless there is pay-per-view or a dvd of the show released(the guys will probably say the performance sucks and not release it). I do agree with Mule’s choice of an all acoustic RAMBLE ON!! It just feels like The Zeps like to jerk the fans around and don’t really try and deliver the goods on a consistent basis.

impossible | 11/13/2007, 2:17 pm EST

I agree that there should be some acoustic things done (down by the seaside etc)….Plants voice has changed as he got older (understandably so)….so I would rather here things he can sing still or re-arranged versions…rather horrible versions of old fav’s….of course I will only get to hear it via bootleg.

Ardie | 11/13/2007, 2:30 pm EST

Nice list Mule and I really suspect they will open the show with ‘rock n roll’

Chris | 11/13/2007, 2:50 pm EST

Tough, but here goes five songs that should be played:

Achilles Last Stand- A fitting opener and if Page can still play it without fainting, it’d be great.

Poor Tom- Listened to it today and it would rock with the added years of experience these guys have. Plus, Plant wailing on the harp is always a joy.

Ten Years Gone- A must have. Nuff said.

Friends- A small masterpiece that Plant does quite low in a lower register (Listen to Unledded if you question that assessment.)

One last one? I’m Gonna Crawl. Porbably the only great song (along with In the Evening) from Out Door, but also Page’s best blues solo. He gets down to the soul of the music, something he didn’t always achieve.

come on | 11/13/2007, 3:42 pm EST

mynameisshaun | 11/13/2007, 6:26 pm EST

hang man is known as gallows pole and bah! you are an idiot
pages finger better be fully healed by the time he plays because it is expected for him to bring his best solos ever, i cant wait to hear dazed and confused with the bow

hansonov | 11/13/2007, 7:29 pm EST

How is their #1 opener of all-time “Rock And Roll” not on Rolling Stone’s dreamlist? Oh yeah, because RS hated Zep in their heyday and really have no clue what Zep is all about. Never have. Never will.

guitarzan | 11/13/2007, 9:18 pm EST

“Baba O Riley”? “WHO” the fuck are you, you you you you…?”

Klaatu | 11/14/2007, 1:32 am EST

The sad truth is that John Bonham is dead, Plant can’t sing the high notes, and Page’s technique has deteriorated.

okay | 11/14/2007, 2:37 am EST

communication breakdown ifplant canhit it.The Crunge

okay | 11/14/2007, 2:40 am EST

Communication Breakdown if Percy can hit it also The Crunge

Curt | 11/14/2007, 8:42 am EST

OK. Immigrant song, whole lot of love, not two of their best songs, not even really good songs for that matter.

Especially not when the following are missing:

Over the Hills and Far Away
Achilles Last Stand
Heartbreaker
The Crunge
That’s The Way (Acoustic)
Bron-Y-Aur Stomp
Since I’ve Been Loving You

ROlling stone sucks when it comes to Led Zep, they always have

Paul Ramone | 11/16/2007, 1:56 pm EST

I saw the lads at Knebworth on Aug 4th 1979 and i knew they would start with The songs remains and they did. In a similar way I know they will start the London set with Achilles Last Stand. It is an majestic opus and one of their most under-rated songs. Apt too, although I reckon they will tour again

Anonymous | 11/16/2007, 2:12 pm EST

This is far too hard – I just hope they play a good acoustic set – a lot of people seem to forget just how otherworldy, wistful and charming their acoustic music is; also, plenty from Physical Graffitti and Houses. Good choice on In the Light! (but while it’s hardly obscure would they play it?)

pete h | 11/16/2007, 2:12 pm EST

In the Light is pretty obscure compared to their other songs.
