Weekend Rock List: Led Zeppelin Dream Setlist

11/9/07, 5:37 pm EST

Earlier this week, Jimmy Page revealed that the Led Zeppelin reunion concert would contain “a lot of songs that people would want to hear.” That’s incredibly vague, as any Zeppelin concert containing “a lot of songs that people would want to hear” would last roughly ten hours. To help Page and the boys draw up a more feasible setlist, we’re asking you what five songs must be played at the show. On Monday, we’ll poll together all the votes and announce the ultimate Zeppelin setlist. Until then, here are our personal picks:

  • “When the Levee Breaks”
  • “Misty Mountain Hop”
  • “Ten Years Gone”
  • “Down By the Seaside”
  • “The Rain Song”

Kinda Dead you saying to Kinda Ready that you are kinda ready to kill them just goes to show the mentality of a lot of Led Zeppelin’s fan base! I have never ever even said things like this to ignorant Beatles haters!

Anonymous | 1/13/2008, 5:41 pm EST

Thank Thank Thank You Kinda Ready for speaking the truth!!!!!

A few years ago I once found a music reviewer from England,I don’t remember his name who said he never liked Led Zeppelin, and the well known music reviewer George Starostin only gives them a grade C and thats way too generous!

I have always totally *hated* Led Zeppelin from the time I was a teenager. They truly sound like one of the worst bands or any “music” I have had the misfortune of ever hearing! They along with Queen, and Pink Floyd are the only 3 bands that I have to get up off of my chair even if I’m very tired and turn off immediately! I’m not alone in feeling this way either,I have found many other people on music review sites saying they f*cking hate Led Zepelin even some people on heavy metal sites!

Not only do many people say that Led Zeppelin stole a lot fom many old blues songs, and Led Zeppelin’s terrible loud banging noise with no creative quality to it at all,and Robert Plant’s common screaming, and sceaching like a retarted monkey, but they also say his lyrics are simple and ordinary and sound like a horny teenage boy wrote them! The Who,The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix are all a Million times better! Heck even Van Halen is much better and I’m not even a fan of theirs. And The Beatles Are A *ZILLION* Times BETTER!!!!!!

Recently a guy on a message board said he can’t stand Led Zeppelin he said their lead singer sounds like a cat trapped in a blender!

The Physical Graffitti concert idea is a great one. There’s so many ways that album showed the musical strengths of Bonham, Page, and Jones. You get to really heard the power trio’s machinery at work!!!

From what I’ve read, in most cases, the songs’ basic structures were figured out, and then they would just jam them out and record the results. Quit a few of those tracks were first takes. The colossal 11 minute opus “In My Time of Dying” is one of those tracks!!!

That makes Physical Graffitti even more of a wonder!

Are you kidding me Rolling Stone? Down By the Seaside and Misty Mountain Hop? You are just saying that to sound cool. This is a 1-time only, 2 hour throwdown:

The must haves have to consist of the big-dogs:

STAIRWAY….duh
IN THE EVENING
DAZED AND CONFUSED
WHOLE LOTTA LOVE
KASHMIR

Now to fill out the setlist (which I would love to see it run 3 hours, plus)

ROCK N’ ROLL

TANGERINE

I am an appalled that there are folks trashing Zeppelin and more disturbed that some idiot insulted Jason Bonham. I’m sure he considers it a privilege and an honor to play with Foreigner on a nightly basis and bring joy to thousands of fans. Two of the biggest selling singles of the past 30 years are “Waiting For a Girl Like You” (Billboard #2 for 10 weeks – Olivia Newton John’s “Physical” held the top spot) and “I Want To Know What Love Is” (Billboard #1). Bonham gets to drum on pop/rock classics like “Hot Blooded”, “Urgent”, “Feels Like The First Time”, “I Don’t Want to Live Without You” and hopefully the barnburning ballad, “Can’t Wait”. If Mick Jones read that post, he probably laughed. As Foreigner’s guitarist, main songwriter and founder, he has been working his ass off for many, many years. The ignorant poster should apologize for losing his mind. The Led Zeppelin reunion is the most anticipated rock event of the year. I have a feeling that the band and Jimmy Page in particular, views this performance as the most important gig of their lives. I will go on record saying that they will live up to the hype and each of them will play as well as they did in their heyday and Plant’s mature voice, but conditioned voice, will sound magical. I wish I could be there.
By the way, Plant hit a home run with the Alison Krauss duet album. The songs, their vocals, the music – it’s fabulous.

Oh, and since Foreigner regularly plays “Whole Lotta Love” now just to remind everyone that they’ve got street cred with Jason Bonham in the band, I think it’s only right that Zeppelin should play “Waiting For A Girl Like You”.

Sarcasm aside, what was this guy thinking?!? Couldn’t he have landed a better gig than a washed-up Foreigner?

“Hi. I’m Jason Bonham. I’m the son of one of the greatest drummers in rock history, and no slouch on the skins myself. Tonight I’m playing the Tallahassee Ribfest, with the guy from Dokken on bass.”

Led Zepellin will play what they want to play. But if I were to choose a setlist, it would not include Stairway, given the song’s sad meaning. Somebody else here mentioned The Ocean. Great suggestion for the final song to play live. Water is everchanging, everflowing and always in a state of flux.

choosing only 5 songs doesn’t amount to a set list for a concert (unless it’s an hour performance for a tv special, commercials included).

but if it’s an hour long tv show you prefer, then the 5 would have to be:

immigrant song
i’m gonna crawl
ramble on
kasmir
achilles last stand

hopefully, they will retire “stairway to heaven” similar to their retirement the past 25 years.

Also after Stairway and most of the people are leaving they should do a epic two and a half hour version of “Hit Me Baby One More Time” with Jimmy playing a hour long solo while having flashbacks of the 70’s and blowing spit bubbles like he did at Live aid along with a wicked half hour Jason Bonham Drum solo. That would f#cking rock.

Seriosly anything and everything from Physical Graffiti cause that stuff wasn’t played live much and isn’t on a billion live cds and dvds and doesn’t sound that dated.

Their lyrics are a slightly embarrassing relic of their day, cosmic hippiedome at its most cringe inducing. So, ok, Plant was a dreadful lyricist, at his worst ironically in “The Greatest Rock and Roll Song of all Time” Stairway To Heaven. Which despite it’s lively second half is a pretentious mess. They were at their best re-inventing blues, James Brown, even Reggae and synths. And When the Levee Breaks really might be The Greatest Rock and Roll (by way of the blues and Memphis Minnie) Song of all Time. If it’s not than Kashmir might be it……………..

-Stairway to heaven.

The only logical reason i can think of as to why you don’t like them is the fact that even in their 60s they could still get more tail then you ever could, even in your sexual hayday, which, judging by you lack of taste, included alot of paid-for sex.

“Not performing their most well-known song will allow Zeppelin’s legacy to remain unfinal.”

“What??? A legacy that’s “unfinal” is not a legacy, idiot. Unfinal? Nice word, jackass!”

That’s an appropriate handle name for you.

Not Surprised | 11/10/2007, 8:13 pm EST

Play “We’re Gonna Groove” (which rocks as hard as anyother) and then Robert pisses on the crowd and tells them to go fuck themselves and then they walk off.

That’s all you deserve!

how about | 11/10/2007, 8:05 pm EST

Who really cares what you fuckin’ idiots think Zeppelin should play. Half of you probably are about as loyal Zeppelin as the so-called Radiohead fans who couldn’t throw them a buck for in Rainbows.

You people are just fuckin’ losers who don’t have sex lives and have to sit in front of a computer and shit out your meaningless lists, you fuckin’ whiny maggots. OUT.

PS Leave this one up RS, I fuckin’ dare ya. You probably won’t because you’re afraid these lttle wimps might cry. Pablum sucking slaves.

they should open with Dancing Days(rock and roll is cliche opener)Kashmire or best of all the Rover and the second encore they should say this is the last time this group is ever going to play this song and take the last Stairway to heaven

Well, I know this is the most cliche idea ever, but I think a 40-minute version of “Stairway” could be in order. It would be pretty sweet if they played an acoustic tune or something (ie. “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You”, but I somehow doubt they will. I’d personally love to hear “Rock and Roll” and “How Many More Times”.
