Prince Releases Diss Track As Battle With Fans Gets Funky

11/9/07, 2:14 pm EST

As you may have read, as part of their copyright crusade, Prince’s legal staff recently demanded that all images of the Purple One be removed from specific fan Web pages. Several sites banded together to form Prince Fans United, there was a brief pause in the action and now … a diss track.

In response, Prince registered the Web domain name “Princefamsunited.com” and posted a seven-minute funk jam called “PFUnk,” alerting fans to its presence on fan site message boards. The song makes no secret of its target: “The only reason you say my name is to get your fifteen seconds of fame, nobody’s even sure what you do,” Prince sings. “I don’t care what people may say, I ain’t gonna let it ruin my day.” Toward the end, Prince tells his fans, in his famed helium-like “Camille” voice, “I love all y’all, don’t you ever mess with me no more,” before taking out all his anger on his guitar. Prince goes as far as calling one person, likely a member of the PFU, “a big fat punk,” and threatens someone called “Weemolicious” by singing “Look here Weemolicious, you and your boyfriend, lemme tell you somethin’ right now, you run up on me again with words or otherwise, I’mma knock both you punks out.” He also sings that he wants digital music to “disappear.”

How did the fans, and the PFU, take to the diss track? With open arms and, surprisingly, dropped jaws. As one poster on the Housequake.com board said, echoing the general response, “It really is head and shoulders above anything on [Planet Earth] or 3121.” Another poster thought they discovered an unearthed B-side from 1987, if not for the topical lyrics. Even the union that gets the brunt of Prince’s bile, the PFU, celebrated the track they helped inspire.

Still, the question remains: Why did Prince’s team target specific Web sites and ask for photos of everything from Prince-inspired tattoos to album-cover images to be removed? Could it be that the sites penalized were bootlegging and file sharing concerts, or diverting traffic from Prince’s official site, 3121.com? Avera denies both claims, saying there’s no file sharing on the boards, and that all the sites route traffic to 3121.com when possible. The sites in question claim they were singled out because they operate message boards that are sometimes critical of the star. Prince does have a history of unleashing his purple wrath on online boards: He terminated the NPG Music Club’s message board, an official paid service for diehard fans, shortly after the release of 2004’s Musicology. “I signed in one day, everything was fine,” Karen Avera, spokesperson for PFU and Housequake moderator, said. “The next day I went and everything was gone. No warning.” Avera speculates negative reactions to the album on the board — which is similar to some of the fan criticism Prince’s Planet Earth received just a few months ago — was to blame.

The fan sites say they have always cooperated with the Paisley Park lawyers — that is, until now. When fan photos of Prince’s London concert marathon started surfacing on message boards, the lawyers asked that the photos be removed and replaced with shots provided by Prince-hired photographers. The fan sites gladly replaced the pictures. Now, however, the lawyers are demanding those photos be taken down. To date, Housequake.com has not removed the images, and since the site is based in Holland, Avera is unsure of whether the cease-and-desist letters are within their jurisdiction.

When Rolling Stone talked to John Giocobbi, the Managing Director of copyright protection agency Web Sheriff, regarding Prince’s battle with YouTube, Giocobbi said, “Prince has always been a very independently minded artist and kind of bold and pioneering in a way. It goes back largely to the kind of promise he had with Warner Bros., when he lost the right to use his own name and then he became The Artist Formerly Known As. And once he recovered his scars from that battle, he was a lot more savvy as a result of that too. And he’s a lot more kind of protective about his rights.” When asked whether the Web Sheriff is just going after illegal bootlegging of Prince videos, Giocobbi admitted that, “In essence we’re going after everything, which is why it’s kind of pioneering.”

As far as Avera is concerned, those message boards are going nowhere. “Oh, we’re going to keep the message boards,” Avera promises, “because the boards go far beyond just talking about Prince’s music. It’s a connection where a lot of people worldwide have come together to talk and make friendships.” Despite feeling unappreciated, and the threat of a looming lawsuit, Avera swears that she, and the PFU, will remain Prince fans. “With everything that’s going on, we continue to listen to his music. We’ll continue to buy his music, because we appreciate his music.”

kliffee | 11/19/2008, 10:24 am EST

This isn’t about whether a songwriter is superb or utter shite. It’s about copyright ownership and last time I checked, you have to pay to use someone’s property. Even if the U.S. Govt. is not doing anything about this theft of an entire industry.

Druidblue | 10/31/2008, 4:57 pm EST

It’s just a simple matter of respect.

First, there’s no arguing Prince is the God of Music. You can’t name another musician who has done more for music, knows more about music, or is more talented at performing music than Prince. In history.

Also, Prince hasn’t sued anyone. Receiving a DMCA takedown is NOT being sued. The only people doing suing are some of the petty fans.

Look, Prince has every right to protect his music to be used in the light he sees most fit. If you’re putting up a video of you dancing in your kitchen with your kid, and there’s a Prince song in the background- it might seem harmless to you. But it’s not your right to decide how that music is portrayed.

What if you had elements in your video that Prince is not in agreement with? Say you had an anti-religious message on a poster on the wall. Prince is highly religious. Someone views a video on YouTube of someone showing their space off, and there’s a Prince song playing in the background. Uninformed viewers would associate Prince with the anti-religious message, because his music is being heard as reinforcement.

You do NOT own the music- Prince does. You simply get to enjoy it.

This will be an interesting chapter in musical studies in 500 and 1000 years, as Prince and his music are already studied in leading musical universities around the world, and will continue to study his music for eons, long after the majority of musicians, bands and artists you hear of nowadays are LONG forgotten.

Does anyone know where the wrecka stow iz? i got a bad case of jam and i really need 2 know where i can find a wrecka stow! Prince will always be the man y’all! Still housquakin’ 2 the bank on y’all selfish sons of biscuit eaters!

Aaminah | 4/14/2008, 1:06 am EST

Prince is a wonderful and talented musician. I wish that people would leave him alone and stop criticizing him.

Understanding Prince | 4/6/2008, 8:34 pm EST

For those trying to minimize Prince’s accomplishments past, present, and those to come, with insults designed to distract simple minds from the real facts, if you humbled yourself in the privacy of your own mind, and admitted that if you truly had one cell of what makes up the complex talent that he is, coupled with his incredible genius level of intelligence in thinking and reasoning ability(which likely few have ever been privy to) in addition to his rare musical genius, you might better understand him and his thinking.

It must be terribly frustrating for a genius when others just don’t “get it” when it comes to issues that are as plain as day to them.

It’s not his fault that he is so brilliant, talented, and handsome as well. As for his attractiveness, it is the icing on the cake that is absent from the usual genius. As a matter of fact, I can’t even think of any past or present.

He is intrinsically complex in a beautiful & exotic way. That is what makes him difficult for some to comprehend. But most can certainly deeply feel his creations on a spiritual level.

So stop looking for faults that are not there and enjoy the amazing talent that he shares. You will be a much happier person.

ArchAngel | 1/12/2008, 7:52 pm EST

Perfect example of what happens when a person gets called a genius too often by too many people. Talent or no, what’s in the heart ALWAYS bubbles to the surface. Sad.

lando | 1/7/2008, 12:22 am EST

prince can do what he wants, and u will still buy his albums.

cat girl formerly known | 1/2/2008, 9:11 am EST

Prince is a sad little man . he is an amazing artist but completly ruthless guess thats how you get to the top and stay there in that industry, but you still have to be a human with feelings and love for others. In the long run it is just entertainment and fashion. Forget that and well go live with some real rats in a caravan till you remember man. Just hope you are healthy and not targeting women rearing kids on their own and old people no more.

sone | 11/23/2007, 3:36 pm EST

Just to let you know. I happen to like Prince. I think he is impulsive and creative. Those types are hard to live with and especially to understand. Sans the reason why he has a hard time settling down and an even harder time getting his point across. He is a scholar and if you have ever sat down with a scholar (someone that is well versed in what they know) they can be quite b-o-r-i-n-g (Yawn.)

However, I can relate to him and his need to keep the gift of music going if not only just for himself. He has created a vehicle to continue to crank out music any way that he likes. That is being creative. The thing that I don’t get is how he wants to use control to stop people from talking about him. Actually, it should be the other way around. The one that is least talked about is the one that is not important. Scholars are know-it-alls that like to hear themselves talk…but no one else can talk about them. I believe that in the industry that he resides in, it caters to rumors, gossip, and the sort. That is what keeps your name alive. When you sell yourself to that industry then you sell yourself…ALL OF YOURSELF, RIGHT! To try to stop that is to end your career and I don’t believe that is what Prince wants…does he???

Ivory Coast Lover | 11/20/2007, 12:16 pm EST

Do not ask Prince 2 do LP like the power of Purple Rain ! it is over my Dear ! now enjoy the free Prince if not go and buy new rock or techno , Rap act . Why many singers r doing Prince thing ? as MJ he loved Prince but he refused him … wait and see!!!

Agnes | 11/18/2007, 10:15 pm EST

All just a publicity stunt, can’t you see that? (For the ones who are giving him the thumbs up) I think we should just leave him alone like he wants…then see him throw a little tantrum when he doesn’t have any press, good or bad. Prince, you need therapy for your N.P.Disorder. Just stop being a crybaby and play your talent…he giveth and he taketh.

Benji88 | 11/18/2007, 7:22 pm EST

why are people on here bad mouthing prince????

you clearly aint got nothing else to do if u sit there and plan cowardly things oyu are going to write online. and we no you dont think of it right away as you have not got the imagination that prince has.

Benji88 | 11/18/2007, 7:20 pm EST

AGENT HAVOC | 11/17/2007, 11:50 am EST

WHAT DOES IT PROFIT A MAN TO GAIN THE WHOLE WORLD AND LOOSE HIS SOUL??

PRINCE IF YOU DONT WANT ANYONE TO EVEN HAVE A SCANNED IMAGE FROM A MAGAZINE PLACED ON A FAN WEBSITE THAT WORSHIPS YOU BECAUSE YOU WANT TO GET PAID FOR IT? THEN YOU NEED TO MOVE YOURSELF TO A PLACE THAT NO ONE ELSE LIVES AND NOT EVER SELL ANYMORE MUSIC. BECAUSE THIS IS A BIDNISS. YOU MAKE MUSIC TO SELL. YOU SELL YOUR IMAGE TO MAGAZINES FOR PUBLISHING TO THE PUBLIC. THEN YOU TELL US NOT TO SHARE THEM. YOU SOUNDS LIKE YOU WANT TO BE GOD. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS . . . YOU WANT TO RULE BY MANDATE!!
THERE IS NO WAY YOU CAN CLAIM TO BE SAVED ACTING THIS WAY. YOUR ACTIONS PORTRAY WHAT IS IN YOUR HEART AND IT APPEARS THAT YOU ARE GREEDY AND ARROGANT.

sweet black | 11/16/2007, 1:10 pm EST

Michael | 11/15/2007, 6:13 pm EST

Prince is an ass. He’s protecting a pile of shit. He hasn’t had a good record since Sign O the Times. That was long long ago in a galaxy far far away! His new song is weird. It actually sounds like it came from that era. You know. When Prince cared about his music. Now he just cares about money. You know why? Because his records don’t make crap. So he will do anything and everything to make a buck. It’s pathetic and sad. Have you seen his album covers over the past 10 years? They look like a 5th grader made them on Photoshop. Just another shortcut he took to save money obviously. He’s a schmuck…w

Michael Schirmer | 11/15/2007, 6:08 pm EST

Hey Prince- Check this out.
Your last good record was Lovesexy. Arguably Batman. Your last great record was Sign O’ The Times. Do you understand how long ago that was? Do you think that your chart success a la ‘free w/ ticket purchase’ has fooled anyone into thinking your music is of any urgency? Dude- You don’t write good music anymore. Any press whether it be on a fan site or in a Rollingstone article is good press(positive or negative)for you. I don’t understand why you’re protecting a pile of shit. It’s not like lyrics like “This it the life O the Party” are worth fighting for. Your “Planet Earth” crap bombed. You ask why? I’ll tell you why. You only made the record because you thought you could ride the Green Wave that Gore is on….hahahahahaha! Bad move idiot. I’ll tell you what though- Your new song and all it’s Camille-like sound is not 1/2 bad. It’s better than anything you’ve put out in 15 years. Why don’t you stick to sex and anger. It suits you.

John Robie | 11/15/2007, 2:57 pm EST

Hey Prince, Purple Rain was a LOOONG time ago. It wasn’t enough that you’ve insulted your fans for years by releasing crappy music, now you feel the need to release crappy music that literally insults your fans?

You’re a jerk Prince. A tiny, tiny jerk.

jesuspresley | 11/13/2007, 11:11 pm EST

who can deny the man is funky? if prince is so over, why is y’all so wrapped up in this discussion? he continues to keep me interested with the old and the new jams. this latest track is fabulous, regardless of whatever bile inspired it. i guess it’s hard to tell a fan from a paparazzo sometimes. i would like to get a taste of some of that london 02 funk.

“Who would have thought that MADONNA with her new $125 million deal would still be relevant and not Prince.”

- Madonna isnt that talented musically, but she chooses the right people to work with her (DJs, video makers, bandmembers, etc). Its a lot harder when you have to write all the music, produce, etc, believe me.

And Prince IS still relevant. Not what he does today, but guys like Timbaland are almost sampling his music from the 80s. Listen to Justin´s latest album.

And who cares? It´s time for Prince to receive awards for the contribution he gave to american music (like Stevie Wonder said), something a lot more important than having a hit based on a remix.

dasnooksta | 11/12/2007, 2:59 pm EST

LOL!

This reminds me of the Purple Rain tour. In Kansas City fans stood in the rain waiting all morning to get tickets for a show scheduled on a wednesday. It sold out as expected. Prince then added a 2nd show on Tuesday! Then a month before the shows he announced that he was not going to perform any more cause he needed to search for the ladder!

Prince should move in with Michael Jackson at Neverland where they both can live happily ever after.

Who would have thought that MADONNA with her new $125 million deal would still be relevant and not Prince.

southbaybadger | 11/12/2007, 1:43 pm EST

Claiming rights to remove photographs taken of him would be the same as his guitar manufacturer claiming ownership of the music he plays on it. If he is a public persona, which he clearly is, he cannot claim ownership of photographs taken of him by others.

The Real Camille | 11/12/2007, 1:16 pm EST

The real Camille would not have religious issues. The real Camille is NOT in PFUnk.

Feel U Up, Scarlet Pussy, Rock Hard in a Funky Place, Housequake, Shockdelica - THAT was Camille.

PFUnk is an underhanded attack on fans. Listen closely. The jam is meant to confuse. The Camille Funk will never be back. The voice sped up in this one is one notch too high. Even Prince forgot his own Funk setting!

And as for any other fan saying he’s been spoken or discussed in a nasty manner in fan forums. Sure, there might be some instances, but for the most part fans discuss what sucks and what is a success in their views. Its honest up front discussion, UNCENSORED and real.

And thru claiming Rights to Publicity, Prince is trying to suppress and CENSOR that type of freedom of speech.

michael Gregoire | 11/12/2007, 1:09 pm EST

Oh snap! What a track! It’s about time that Prince gets wild again! I for one welcome “Camille” back! Now I hope an album follows!

Peace Y’all

wrecksracer | 11/12/2007, 11:04 am EST

I’ll admit that I was being unnecessarly harsh by calling Prince a copycat has been. It’s only because I saw him in concert in the early 90’s…..and it was a tepid, phoned in, overly choreographed affair. It allegedly had some storyline running through the entire concert. I just wanted to see a great artist deliver the goods….and he failed miserably. I know Miles Davis said he is great. I have the Prince/Miles Davis bootleg. Miles Davis has great taste. However, I’ve seen great artists who delivered in concert…..Muddy Waters, Ray Charles, James Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Sun Ra, Fela, John Lee Hooker…….Prince is unfortunately on my worst concerts ever list. The fact that he has an attitude about his “Greatness” makes him even more ridiculous in my book. Prince…..if you give me back the $70 I wasted on your phoned in performance, I might re-evaluate your status as a 2nd tier R&B performer. Genius? That’s setting the bar pretty low for genius status…………

Amalia | 11/12/2007, 10:17 am EST

Not all fans are as united as the PFU would like you to believe. Many have spoken out about the nasty way Prince is talked about on those sites in the name of “freedom of speech”. No other artist is as accessible to his fans as he is. When the NPGMC was up and running, we enjoyed great seats, sound checks, and VIP access to after shows. If he wants them to take down his pictures, I don’t see the big deal. All he owes us is music and live shows, and the he sure does deliver . Keep it funky Prince. We love u!

Jimmy | 11/12/2007, 9:48 am EST

PFUnk is a great track. Too bad he has to be pissed off to make good music these days.

Veteparcarajo | 11/11/2007, 8:43 pm EST

Prince U need 2 understand the sites r not down with the pirates of the web. The fans feel like they’re ur family cause they have known, grew up, lived with ur music 4 so long…

Dis the ones who perpetuate the bootleg items of U O(+>. Not the fans who enjoy ur images or overseas vids from 1 of ur gigs.

Not every 1 can afford a trip out 2 London or some stadium out in Europe 2 see U. If they’re day or night is made by just getting a little glimpse of 1 of your gigs it shouldn’t bother U in the least bit.

Bottom line….as long as they keep buying your CD’s and singles and pay 2 attend your gigs here in the States. It shouldn’t be no thang or sweat off your brow…bro

Dig it…

One…

crazy for cocoa rock | 11/11/2007, 8:39 pm EST

Jebus… Can’t y’all check facts first? Musicology came out in 2004; not 2001. The NPGMC website, which opened 2/14/2001, shut down July 4, 2006. And get some Q-Tips for your ears; it’s weave-alicious, not weemolicious (WTH? talk about Chronic Lyrocosis). Nor does he say he wants digital music to disappear ~ why would he; he’s been giving/selling us music in digital formats for years. I’m shocked RS published this crap on their site.

Equalizer | 11/11/2007, 3:38 pm EST

A few weeks ago, these Prince ‘fan’ sites were awash with comments on how Prince was insane for even taking on the issue of copyright abuse. Few were those who thought that anything could be achieved.
As of tonight, with the heart of the bootleggers ‘Purple Underground’ ripped out (their top-secret ‘Royal Hub’ has just been terminated) and the second most popular pirate site, Demonoid down as well, we are truly witnessing an historic change on the web.
For too long it’s been about ‘get it all for free’ and then not even feel grateful. Prince has positively embraced this culture by cutting ticket prices, giving away albums and tracks and yet been absolutely spat back in the face.

It’s time that web-consumers restored in themselves some kind of respect, some kind of value for what’s been created by those who DON’T spend their days downloading illegally and their nights dissing on message boards.

The time of the nerds is over.
It’s time for the stars to shine again.

Rick Rotolo | 11/11/2007, 3:00 pm EST

We the greater general public have never even heard of these generic schizophrenic fan sites. More than that they have nothing to offer us the general public. Why is this even here?

It’s really annoying to come here looking for Prince music news and see this. Frankly, I don’t care what Prince does in his private or business life. He’s one the greatest guitarist ever to live. I just want come to Rolling Stone to read about his great music.

I say Rock on Prince.
Now lets hear some music news!

Dave | 11/11/2007, 1:50 pm EST

He was the highest paid musician a couple years ago. I think it was to the tune of $50 million that year.

It is beyond me why he is less than thankful to some of the people who have helped his success. As far as I see it, his actions can boil down to one of two reasons, either…

1. He is pissed because he thinks he should have made more money… maybe $55 million? $65 million?

2. He unhappy with himself and the image that he projects so he feels the need to censor his persona even if it means going after his fans.

Prima donna musicians piss me off. Especially out-of-touch, ungrateful, prima donna musicians.

John Birch | 11/11/2007, 12:44 pm EST

All this controversy is worth it just for that new diss song. It kicks yo mamma’s big fat funky butt! Put out more songs like this, prince! everyone keep up the insults, make him angry! the music will just get better!

Gustavo | 11/11/2007, 12:27 pm EST

Wrecksracer
It´s funny but both Larry Graham and Maceo Parker love Prince and call him genius Santana loves him, and Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, Robert Plant, Brian May and so many others praised his great talent.
I dont know if a ´copycat´ deserves this kind of praising.

And his music is still relevant. Ask Timbaland, who is a millionaire based on Prince´s 80s beats.

Long Tim Prince Fan | 11/11/2007, 4:59 am EST

I just found out about this suit and I am deeply concerned. I too have followed his music since 1979 (Detroit, DJ Electrifying MoJo played Soft and Wet and I was hookd) I’m trying to figure out is this really about copyright infringement or is it about the fan (fams) critique of his more recent music. I have to admit, I have only loved a few songs on each album, whereas I used to jam to an entire album without skipping a singe track. In spite of all the hoopla around this, I’m still trying to hang on. I even went out and bought his 3121 perfume (hate to admit it but the stuff was THA BOMB - I ended up buying several bottles after all the complements) With all this crap about the law suits against site and even fans posting photos of Prince inspired tatoos…does this mean I’m gonna get sued also (I have Prince tattoos)…cuz if that is true… He’s gonna have to pay for my tattoo removal and compensation for the pain…CUZ THAT STUFF IS GONNA HURT!!!

Prince is hereby boycotted from my music collection!

Klaatu | 11/10/2007, 10:01 pm EST

I don’t think we can blame this on Prince’s label. He recorded a diss track, so we know how he feels.

So, okay everybody, no Prince music on YouTube or other web sites where people upload stuff. He wants to be left out of what amounts to the new version of radio play, and I say let him.

He is only hurting himself. When a fan makes a video of a kid dancing to a Prince song, it exposes a whole new audience to his music, but he doesn’t want that. He would rather have control than exposure.

silly man

sone | 11/10/2007, 8:35 pm EST

It is what it is!!!

A man fully aware that he has aged and can’t keep up. Music evolves and will come back around to non-digitization where live recordings was the norm. However, he never reached the pentacle of success in live recordings and setting the mood as such artist as; Larry Graham, Sly Stone, Earth-Wind-and Fire, Barry White, and all the artist of the 70’s.

I mean no one, and I really mean no one jumps up, dances, and flashback to When Doves Cry, Purple Rain, and especially any of his new stuff. But when you hear an old cut from the above artist…every artist, fan, and young child will HOLLA! Even when they know nothing about it. You can hum a few bars of one of their melody lines and immediately remember the lyrics. That is what art is all about.

Let’s face it. He is a great musician trying to keep his name viable with his antics. He has a following of fans that will support his concerts. His sell-out tours are extremely sold out in the overseas market, because they love soulful people - no racial barriers there in the arts. His religion doesn’t keep him satisfied, because he is religious (think of it…P-FU..nk) if he has Jesus in his life then he wouldn’t get so carried away in self and profanity…Prince still can’t be an example for the Jehovah’s Witness.

Let go and let God! (fight your battles of your mind Prince)

May God bless you all!!!

In response to “rolling stones reader” - the prince camp is releasing statements that these are bootleg cover-up sites but that’s not true. And fans are defintly threatened because anything they use with his image for fun - like their own fan-calendar has to. Even picturs that were paid for had to go because Prince wrongfully thinks he owns the rights to any picture with his face on. The photograhers own most of the rights and many pics were cleared with them.

Adisa | 11/10/2007, 12:54 pm EST

Man, I can always count on Prince for a good laugh! I think this whole thing is LOL funny, really.

Rolling Stone reader | 11/10/2007, 12:45 pm EST

So let me get this straight. You have three sets of site administrators that started Prince fan clubs on the internet who feel a sense of self entitlement to what is his business because they like his music? What a strange bunch. They sound like a wild group of thugs.

Sadly enough, they have worded things to trick a few of his real fans thinking Prince is suing
THEM?

Maybe they don’t like him releasing cd’s because then they have nothing new to bootleg?

That new cut from Prince really rocks. Those so called fans should shut up and let the man continue to make his music in peace so the rest of us can have some decent music to listen to. Today’s music is pure garbage.

PATIENT X | 11/10/2007, 12:44 pm EST

PRINCE IS A MORON AND A WEIRDO.

DIGITAL MUSIC IS HERE TO STAY, AT LEAST IT’S PRESENT MUSIC AND NOT SOME PAST 80′S HAS BEEN CRAP.

MAYBE YOU SHOULD GET A JOB THIS CHRISTMAS WITH SANTA LITTLE ONE.

thewufs | 11/10/2007, 11:51 am EST

Unfortunately some folks have taken advantage of Prince’s wrongheaded legal wrangling to call him out as a has-been and dismiss his music. This is really stupid. I don’t like the actions he’s taken myself, but the guy has been living in his own world since he wore Paisley. Of course he doesn’t have a clue how to deal with his fans. Of course he’s a dick.

But what the fuck has that got to do with his music? Sure, he’s not making vital records like he was in the 80’s, but his new stuff is solid, which may be all we can ask for. The magnitude of his cultural and artistic contributions is such that he never needs to prove himself again. Shit, at least he’s still making new music. So what if he repeats himself?

As for his relationship with the fan sites, I say go ahead and picket the motherfucker. But we need to understand the maxim about separating the artist from the art. A lot of rock stars are assholes, though Prince has obviously reached some kind of new low as far as a relationship with his fans goes. Just don’t let that color what you think about his music.

marc | 11/10/2007, 8:54 am EST

I’ve been on HQ for quite some time and they’re not doing any bootlegging. Probably a number of members might be into it but the site itself surly is not. It’s discusting to see how these sites are being portrayed as illegal organisations that cover up some dark business.

The real issue here is that they are being targeted, not because of alleged bootleg-selling, not because of illegal imagery, but because Prince wrongfully assumes any picture with his face on is his property and his right to control. That’s not the case; many of the images there were obtained by fans through the actual photographers who really own the ©. He wants to sui theese peopel for using his name, discussing him and his work. Thats downright illegal but it’s hard to stop a big PR and legal machine when being fed with Prince’s money reserve.

The song is an insult in the sense that he thinks that the thousands of fans on these boards are reacting because they want their 15 minutes of fame. We only want to enjoy his music and his legacy. that includes the times he walked around in small black brief and stockings.

Rhondab | 11/10/2007, 6:54 am EST

Its really a shame that some fans or so-called “fams” don’t really get the point of why these sites need to do this. (the Fam thing is so silly but ok…whatever)

Some are so wrapped up in being “fams” that they don’t see how this effects freedom of speech in other mediums as well if Prince is successful. I truly believe that if Prince did not have a history of targeting the fan sites for issues other than copyright issues, many could understand. I know that the Org has always done a great job of making sure they are in accordance with anything Paisley Park demands BUT everything they demand isn’t necessarily their RIGHT. Not all pictures posted of Prince are owned by him thus can be posted. This is about Prince AND the sites legal rights.

What’s interesting is that if that very pic of prince posted above was posted on the three sites, they would receive a letter asking it to be removed. Let’s see if Rolling Stone receives a letter.

I doubt it.

wrecksracer | 11/10/2007, 2:07 am EST

Prince will go down in history as a great guitar player, singer, and producer….but he doesn’t have great songs like Superfly, Papa’s got a Brand New Bag, or I Want to Take You Higher. Sorry…..When Doves Cry is up there with I Believe I can Fly as far as “greatness” is concerned

Princefan4ever | 11/10/2007, 12:46 am EST

Prince you need to get your own moderated forum (free please), so your real fams are spared the negative attacks on you..your music and your fams that stick up for you against THEM. If you do those other sites will be nothing but virtual ghost towns full of your haterz and bootleggers.

WEB SHERIFF TELLS PRINCE FANS TO PIPE DOWN: Internet monitoring
company says backlash should target label, not the singer.

*The Internet monitoring company hired by Prince’s label to
target sites that are using his likeness and music without permission
has accused fans of expressing their anger at the wrong party.

As previously reported, three of Prince’s top fansites have
joined forces to create Prince Fans United with aims of fighting any
legal action from Web Sherriff, the company hired to protect the
singer from copyright infringement.

But, Web Sheriff claims Prince himself has nothing to do with
the lawsuit threats — it is the work of record label.

“At no time is Prince suing his fans and this is not about
freedom of speech,” said Web Sheriff’s managing director, John

Prince’s record label and three unofficial Web sites and relates to
the use of Prince trademarks and photographs, many of which are
Prince’s copyright.”

Is this what Housequake calls freedom of speech? Chopping up the post of a fan with a different view from theirs and disrespecting them for it. They can dish it but they sure can’t take it.

First of all, the track is great. And as a fan I don’t feel the slightest bit dissed by it. If it is a diss it sure isn’t aimed at me or the fans, it is aimed the extreme minority of fans calling themselves PFU and their supporters.

To get a grasp of what some of these ‘punks’ are like, some of them are even trying to take credit for the track as they try to suggest Prince owes them something more than the album they purchased at the records store, on top of the album itself. “Pretty dillusional huh?

For a long time there have been a minority of fans who think they are owed more then they deserve who have argued pointless and asinine arguments on the forums, unforuntately now they have managed to find a bigger forum in the vein of PFU to become the louder voice than the infinitely many more fans who don’t share their opinion. Their deversion tactics and spin will not last long, nor will their 15 seconds of fame.

The owners of three fans sites and a handful of fans does not a fanbase make and if PFUnk is aimed at them then good on you Prince for being able to so well articulate what the rest of us think.

And God bless you Equaliser for so far in all this truer words have not been spoken.

To all the people saying that Prince is not relevant can go listen to these wash up watered down so called “artists” of today. NOT 1 OF THEM can compete with Prince. He is the greatest most creative genius of our time. If you can’t see it or appreciate it then that’s your loss, but for those of us who can truely appreciate Prince for who he is are grateful to God for blessing the world with his existence. The reason that the world can’t relate to and genuinely enjoy his music is because you have to have a pure and intuned mind to enjoy it which don’t. Prince’s music is pure, intuned, raw, truthful, spiritual, and straight from his heart and mind so, if your a hater, usually critical, close minded, or don’t like funk, rock, jazz, or pure music invented entirely from someone with whom you share the same beliefs, and maybe not the same talent, but the same qualities as Prince, then your not gonna wanna hear him or his music. Let’s say this, you have to be a certain type of person to enjoy Prince and that type of person is not like most of the world, which is a good thing.

LondonStyle | 11/9/2007, 9:47 pm EST

Prince is an artist who like’s to protect his work, this is the digital age, he needs look after his digital image and music rights..like everything he does. It business he’s got no beef with “fams” who go out and buy his music legit..check the lyrics before you moan “fan’s”

Dig DEEPER Daniel Kreps | 11/9/2007, 9:27 pm EST

Could it be that the sites penalized were bootlegging and file sharing concerts, or diverting traffic from Prince’s official site, 3121.com? Avera denies both claims, saying there’s no file sharing on the boards, and that all the sites route traffic to 3121.com when possible.

Can we get a comment from Morris Day and Jerome?

Equalizer | 11/9/2007, 8:00 pm EST

RS’s take is exactly right on the bootleg undercarriage of these ‘fan’ sites. The bootleggers are still there and they’re still selling. Limited edition 40-cd sets of the O2 shows were eventually posted for free on a supposedly top-secret Prince P2P site where you can find pretty much all of Prince’s output, “released” and “unreleased” but only after the bootleggers had made their cash by selling out the edition.

The ‘purple underground’ as they themselves call it is sophisticated but not so much as they imagine.

The fan sites’ ‘community’ spirit seems to be composed of incessant bile and hatred of Prince because he has much more in HIS purple underground and he won’t so it THEIR way.

If Prince is insane, he atleast ain’t rabid like the fans of his fan sites where protests of free speech are their PR smokescreen for a soft-mobster collection of people who don’t even like his music.

And that is the word of an outsider who made it to the heart of this PFU triumverate. Key players’ names are to be found on the bootlegs of the last twenty years. Prince knows what he’s doin’… and all this fuss is the rats being cornered.

WORD.

Too bad Prince is a sad old man shaking his fist at the kids on the block now. These guys get it, the Saul Williams/Trent Reznor collaboration “The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust!”. Download the 192 kbps for free or pay 5 bucks for the 320Kbps or FLAC cd quality versions at the nin site or saul williams’

Princefan4ever | 11/9/2007, 6:11 pm EST

Way to go Princey! Throwing back at them your handprint with love on it and the comment undefined plus your own PFU website and that PFUnk song..brillant!!!

So called fans that live in a time warp and wish all your music sounded like 1999 therefore trashing anything you do in this decade are deluding themselves if they think they speak for all your fans. True fans love your music not hate it!

Funkfreak | 11/9/2007, 5:51 pm EST

Let the man be!!!! He is just expressing his feelings at the moment and obviously he does this through his music. It’s complex to know what Prince thinks. A man can do as many great deeds in his life and if he makes just one mistake men are there to critize!!!! Is’nt that the human way???!!!! People need God in there lives. God expresses his love through “us”. When we are getting negative don’t you think we need to get a bit spirtual???!!!!! Doesn’t this balance us????? One of his lyrics I do remember is “God is love, love is God. Love for one another, Peace

prince,
if you want to get praise… make a good album…

dissing your fans is uncool…

make your next album a concept album… that way, people would be far more likely to buy the entire album and it seems as though it would be easier to make it great…

Anonymous | 11/9/2007, 5:11 pm EST

There was nothing copycat about 1999, Purple rain, Dirty Mind or SOTT. Stuff was brilliant and most of it has aged extreamly well. In fact, it’s pretty remarkbable how “cutting edge”
When Doves Cry” still sounds. And he’s still first class live…now the 90s output has not aged well at all…

jungleland | 11/9/2007, 5:03 pm EST

I think Prince is realizing just how powerful the internet can be and how a digital track has no value to the consumer. His attempt to try to dominate the internet is not working so well. Sure he wishes digital downloads would go away, he is not making a living off of them!

What Prince has going for him is name recognition, publishing to at least some of his catalog, and the ability to tour successfully. I can’t say I feel sorry for the guy!

Princefan | 11/9/2007, 4:59 pm EST

Just play, Prince…shut up and just…play…!

The Voice of Reason | 11/9/2007, 4:50 pm EST

Steve | 11/9/2007, 4:47 pm EST

He wishes digital music would go away, yet he posts a digital track. He doesn’t want people taking his stuff for free, but he sneaks his new album into a bag attached to a British tabloid.

Man, that’s deep.

Sometimes I wish it was Morris Day who came out of Purple Rain ahead. Oh, and I wish I’d never seen Under The Cherry Moon.

Shut up Prince - go join Avril Lavigne and Nickelback in the Artists Against Criticism Coalition.

Isn’t that the thing about art - isn’t it supposed to be subjective?

We’re supposed to be able to love and loathe whatever we want. If these “artists” don’t want to be critiqued, then they should record songs in their basement and never make the final product available to the public.

John Heckman Wright | 11/9/2007, 3:42 pm EST

As a seasoned Prince fan with more than 20 of his albums on my Ipod right now (legally obtained!), I for one am no longer interested in his career. The fans that run these sights are the type of people who bought NPG Music club memberships, who preordered albums in the 90s that were never shipped, who bought The Rainbow Children and NEWS!! And yet, his greed leads him to sue the very fans who have been most supportive of him over the years.

This is the last straw for me. I feel good to no longer have to suffer through mediocre Prince albums like 3121, Planet Earth, or Musicology while trying to make excuses for him. The good folks at PFU should wise up and let him keep his image, and while he’s at it he can keep the music and the concerts too.

wrecksracer | 11/9/2007, 3:16 pm EST

Is Prince even relevant anymore? He’s a religious freak who hasn’t put out a good album in years. Furthermore, his music hasn’t aged well…..sounds like plastic 80’s soul. Give me P Funk, Sly Stone, James Brown, or Curtis Mayfield…..Prince is a hasbeen copycat.

Ardie | 11/9/2007, 3:15 pm EST
