Rolling Stone’s Christian Hoard says Jay-Z’s concept record inspired by the film American Gangster feels more like a comeback album than Jay’s first post-retirement record Kingdom Come. Packed with horns and beats from Diddy and Just Blaze, the album gives Jay a place to meditate on the gangster lifestyle, which seems to have inspired him anew (and led to fiery, reference-packed verses like the one that name drops Depeche Mode and Tony LaRussa within seconds).
