Weekend Rock List: Favorite Rolling Stone Covers

11/2/07, 5:11 pm EST

As you may have noticed, Rolling Stone is celebrating its fortieth anniversary this year. In this Wednesday’s USA Today, the newspaper looked back at our history and revealed their favorite RS covers. We liked the idea so much, we’re gonna take it. For this weekend’s Rock List, we’re asking you what covers in the magazine’s history you’ve found most iconic, striking or memorable. We’ll reveal the final list in a gallery on Monday. Until then, here are a few of our picks, to help jog forty years of memory:

  • John Lennon/Yoko Ono – Issue No. 335, January 1981
  • The Blues Brothers – Issue No. 285, February 1979
  • Nirvana – Issue No. 628, April 1992
  • Kanye West – Issue No. 993, February 2006
  • Seinfeld Cast – Issue No. 787, May 1998

I liked the very first cover with John in the pith helmet. It was a still from a movie he was doing at the time, I believe.

Yes, corporate rock magazines still suck.

The Jennifer Aniston cover.

Got to go with the one with S. Park’s Kenny on the cover with those weapons stuck in his head. I’m pretty sure he’s smiling under that hood.

I prefer those crazy illustrated covers from the early years (e.g. Fear and Loathing 1971, Dr. Hook 1973 and Stevie Wonder 1975)

Also like the older covers with people on them that were huge at the time but nobody knows who they are now – who the fuck is Joe Dellasandro? Doug Sahm?

Just goes to show you fame’s fickle nature. What’s here today is gone tommorrow.

What was great about the “Passion of Kanye” cover? It was controversial? John and Yoko was one of my favorites, but if that Passion one wins, I’ve got to wonder why.

because corporate magazines still suck

I remember that. Cobain wanted to have it both ways. He wanted to be on the cover to get press for his band and he thought that the shirt would somehow save him from being labeled a sellout. Hypocrite.

and Lennon looks disgusting on that cover. It’s sad to see what his Svengali wife did to his mind.

I think it’s more of an irony than a hypocrisy. I can only speak for myself, but I would have heard Nirvana’s music eventually through word of mouth, small concert gigs, or by way of college or alt radio, regardless of whether they sold out or not. Before they broke through into mainstream, Nirvana had already begun to establish a fanbase following of their own among alternative music listeners.

“Who’s Doug Sahm?” LMAO…please…if you have to ask, then, well…you know…

Anyway, it’s a tough question…but (today) I’d have to go with my top 5 (in no particular order):

Britney’s “Lolita” cover
Lennon and Yoko ‘81
(…and for its similar “no headline” layout:)
George Harrison posthumous cover
The 1,000th cover – awesomeness
The Dr. Hook cover
(…’cause they STILL didn’t get their “picture” on the cover – just a cartoon drawing – which was brilliant, ’cause they could still do the song in concert without it being instantly dated!)

Jamie | 11/5/2007, 2:08 pm EST

Brooke Shield “Pretty Baby” cover!OMG!

Be that as it may, they became superstars because of vehicles such as MTV and Rolling Stone.

Live Through This had some great guitars, it was a brilliant record.

Great b/w picture, the main article was about OJ. That and Kurt were the the main stories then, RS summed it all up for me. And the other names at the top? Sheryl Crow, Pearl Jam, The Jayhawks, Bob Dylan, Oasis.

Just a great cover.
