Single Minded: PJ Harvey, Arcade Fire, 50 Cent and Justin Timberlake Remix and More

11/2/07, 10:09 am EST

Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more.

PJ Harvey, “Down by the Water” [Live]
Even without those spidery guitars, this song still scares the bejesus out of us.

50 Cent, Justin Timberlake & Orbital, “Ayo Technology” [Remix]
Wow! So there is a good song in here! Kinda! California DJ uses an extended Orbital sample to rescue 50’s disinterested verse. He remains curiously powerless, however, against the year’s worst chorus.

Young-Holt Unlimited, “Light My Fire” [Doors Cover]
Mid-Seventies funk group strips this classic rock monolith of its wearying portentousness (thank God) and turns it into something you can actually imagine getting amorous to. Bonus: also featured are three hip-hop songs built around the Y-H cover.

Arcade Fire, “Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)” [Live, Before They Were Famous]
Believe it or not, there was a time when the Arcade Fire were just a bunch of Canadians playing for nobody on lousy opening slots. The upside of this anonymity? Making it through a show without getting hit in the face by a bottle.

The Hold Steady, “American Music” [Violent Femmes Cover]
Minneapolis’s favorite sons do the world a tremendous service by covering a Violent Femmes song that’s not “Add it Up.” Young rock bands of the world, take note!

Man, John Goodman looks great. Losing all that weight? Kudos!
