Ozzy Osbourne Blames Poor Album Sales On Illegal Downloading

11/1/07, 11:36 am EST

Sounds like unlike Trent Reznor, Ozzy Osbourne did not have an OiNK account. Osbourne is complaining that he is “suffering terribly” from the effects of illegal downloading. The Ozz man tells Australia’s Herald Sun that sales of his newest release Black Rain have lagged because of Web piracy, forcing him to perform ninety concerts this year — a career high for the fifty-eight-year-old singer. “If they don’t find something to stop [illegal downloading], people won’t be able to make records. There won’t be any new bands. How are they going to survive?” he asked. (We watched The Osbournes and believe that family could probably survive in a slightly smaller mansion, but point taken). As for the lagging sales of Black Rain — the first record Ozzy has written and recorded sober — maybe the album isn’t selling because, well, it’s not that great. Or maybe it’s because the album’s single was locked out by rigid radio playlists and there’s no outlet for music videos these days. “I mean, I ain’t getting any younger,” he says of his live gigs. “Sharon says to me ‘Just stand there’. I can’t just fucking stand there! I’m a moving target. People would aim their can of beer at my head!” Stay strong and keep on playing those concerts, Ozzy. They’re keeping our streets safer.

OH NO YOU DIDN’T! Hahaha…

Thanks you. Now I don’t have to say it.

I am exited to see him in concert with Rob Zombie. That is about to be the best show!

Does this man not have enough f-in’ money yet? At this point, he should be making albums cause he wants to make music, not because he’s worried how it’s gonna sell. If not, he should gracefully bow out and let people remember the relevant times of Ozzy’s career, which if I remember correctly was around the same time people still wore parachute pants.

R n' R | 11/1/2007, 2:05 pm EST

I think The Ozzman is more about enjoying the concert experience these days. People don’t mind paying for music at all and illegal downloading is a shell of what is used to be. His album isn’t selling because, unless you are one of the 100,000 hardcore fans, it sounds like the last 5 albums he made(if that good). And Ozzy…we really don’t believe you need to do 90 shows a year to survive, you rich snob. Stop spending your money like a wanker. I think you are still rocking since it what you enjoy. Find some new staffers to promote your album in the current music marketplace.

Country Crotch | 11/1/2007, 2:29 pm EST

Yeah right! Like so many people are downloading Ozzy’s latest piece of crap for free. Get real. A lot of people just don’t give a shit for his new stuff. And I’m sure he still makes a shit load of money from tours and having his name associated with Ozzfest every year. Stop being a fucking baby Ozzy and don’t pull a Lars Ulrich on us with that free downloading crap.

Phoenix | 11/1/2007, 3:22 pm EST

Ozzy, it’s time to hang up your cleats!!! Bring on the mighty Zeppelin!!! They’re gonna prove all the doubters wrong!!!

Johnny Kickass | 11/1/2007, 3:34 pm EST

Copyright material – DOES. NOT. BELONG. TO. YOU.

- It is NOT. FREE. FOR. THE. TAKING.

-What part of that is so hard to understand. So sick of little pukes acting like it’s their birthright to steal everyone and anyone’s intellectual property.

You know I buy the majority of my music. But anybody who says they never downloaded a free song or received a downloaded song from someone else is a fuckin’ liar or from another planet. Shove the holier than thou crap. It’s old and it’s bullshit!!!

Izabael DaJinn | 11/1/2007, 6:29 pm EST

From rock god to whiny wanker. How far they tumble…

Also bands should learn that if they want people to actually trek to a store to buy a CD you better make the packaging f**king amazing like Tool does.

about Ozzy | 11/1/2007, 8:02 pm EST

Even if there was no such thing as mp3’s or Illegal downloads his cd would still sell poorly. He is outdated can’t sing and only makes money touring like other dinosaur rock stars. The only people who buy his new cds are die hard fans.

eep | 11/1/2007, 8:48 pm EST

90 concerts??? That’s nothing. Ozzy’s a lazy bastard, musically as well as physically. That’s his problem.

amanda | 11/2/2007, 1:30 am EST

you know, ozzy, here’s a thought, WHY DON”T YOU DO WHAT RADIOHEAD DID, and what Trent just did for Saul Williams and forgo the record labels and just make your album available for download on your site. You’ll still make money and keep the fans happy. I have been to many an Ozzfest, and while he was a great performer, he’s just getting too old to do that many shows. You can’t stop downloading, it just ain’t gonna happen.

QOTSA | 11/2/2007, 6:44 am EST

Hey Ozzy, maybe your album isn’t selling well because it isn’t very good.

SVUF | 11/2/2007, 10:32 am EST

Despite in what everyone else says, I agree with Ozzy a 100%!! A violation of a copyright is a violation of a copyright!! How would any of you would like it if you work hard on an album expecting to make alot of money on your record sales and then all of sudden, you don’t make a dime because of the illegal downloads!! In other words, if the shoe fits wear it!! Also if caught, its a good way to go to prison to be someone’s babe, plus pay a fine which any of you probably couldn’t afford to pay!!

Ozzy should have retired a long time ago. And he isn’t the best singer Sabbath have had!

Asshole Rose | 11/2/2007, 10:44 pm EST

He’s having a hard time selling the CD because it SUCKS, not because of illegal downloading. Record an album with the original Black Sabbath and see how that sells. (Oh yeah, and then retire)

Skitz from Ky | 11/4/2007, 10:50 am EST

First off, let me re-educate the public and dispel a few myths:

1) Every musician/rock star/pop star/music industry exec on the planet has either a) stolen music b) stolen food and other valuables and/or c)committed some form of illegal crime.

2) Before MP3’s there were CD’s, before that Audiocassettes, before that, basic record store theft – everyone does it, even the musicians that you held so high in regard.

3) Record companies thieve from the artists, Managers thieve from the artists – The artists thieve from the consumer……everyone lives in a mansion, except us. Hello?

I don’t feel bad, I think everyone has enough money to choke themselves with and should do so. After you make Wall Street scratch, you lose your edge, your street credibility and Ozzy don’t seem to rock out like he used to. The record industry has no clue what to do with the new technology or how to promote the new genre of artists coming up. It’s back to the DIY attitude – who needs record companies anyway?

Revrant | 11/5/2007, 7:07 am EST

Hey, Daniel, Fuck you, lagging? Not that good? Why don’t you go pucker up and lay another on Britney Spear’s flabby ass? Rolling Stone used to be about the music, not about the “reputation”, you lost all of your best people and replaced them with snotty, sarcastic elitists who won’t even review albums from a plethora of successful acts. You make me sick.

harry knuckle | 11/5/2007, 2:51 pm EST

As a former die hard metalhead, I thought Ozzy used to rock, probably one of the best in the business. Unfortunately, I’m just not into him anymore. I wouldn’t even download his new album for free. I’m sure lots of people feel the same way. Sorry OZ, it’s not the downloading. Nice try though…

Jim Galvin | 11/5/2007, 3:07 pm EST

Although It’s Not Ozzy’s Best Album, It’s Still Ozzy!! I Purchased The CD On It’s Release Date And I Have To Say Honestly That It Pissed Me Off Having That Crappy Cardboard Sleeve As The Jewl Case…I Don’t Think It’s The Illegal Downloading That Affected The CD Sales, It’s That Shit Packaging. A Few Releases Resorted To This Packaging And It’s Horrible, The CD’s Come Pre-Scratched Now! I Exchanged TESLA – REEL TO REEL 5 Times Before I Got A Disc That Played. Digi-Pak with Plastic Trays inside are ok, LP Cover Replicas I Won’t Buy Anymore.

P.S. I BUY All My Music Via The Actual CD, If Anyone Cares.

gd69 | 11/8/2007, 12:02 pm EST

Its amazing to think that at this point in time he still worried about sales, but may be money ask for money,it could be that now hes sober and start to realize he needs to sell more albums,if theres ever another album anytime soon, please do us a favor.NO MORE TEARS. PSNo more shitty album packages,tx.

Gabe | 11/13/2007, 1:16 pm EST

don’t feel sadder than a rainy day
i’ll buy your album

I wonder if Ozzy’s record company put an extra % in his contract if he carps on about illegal downloading. Betcha they do.

all you people that are making fun of ozzy well look at your self you are no rock star. I bet people would say bad things about you. you are stupid
and need a life. ozzy is the best thing ever so fuck off

anthony from san diego | 3/12/2008, 12:31 am EST

that was the best concert ever. ozzy still can actually sing and guess what, YA HIS ALBUM SUCKED, BUT TATS WHY I LISTEN TO OLD OZZY MORE AND THE STUFF THAT PROBIBLY NOBODY KNOWS BY HIM, walk on water, the whole worlds falling down, angel of death, the ultimate sin(which was a good album) all great songs, leave ozzy alone, sure he might be going a bit senile but he rocks way harder than you do and unlike the gay ass bands of today, WAR!

supporter | 4/1/2008, 5:34 pm EST

I hate it when people go to the artist’s website and affiliates just to talk shit about them. Ozzy is the best and always will be so start bitching about your favorite band.

I saw Ozzy at Ozzfest 2005 when he toured with Black Sabbath, and I did not see one person sitting, that show was amazing, one of my favorite Ozzy albums is ” Ultimate Sin”, Bark At The moon is another favorite, that song is hard on Guitar Hero, and my friend was even playing it too!, as for the illegal downloading, that can hurt any band, new or old because it is being stolen by millions, and not just shared by a single few before computers got good enough to copy the albums to CD, The buyers don’t originaly own the “RIGHTS” to the albums the artists do, Just because you buy an album does’nt mean that it gives you the right to do what ever you want with it “except buy, and listen to it!”

ozzfansince1980 | 10/2/2008, 1:53 am EST

black rain has 2 very good songs 2 pretty good songs.. the rest are crap. period. A typical zakk wylde same ole same ole….. blizzard and diary were the real bomb.. randy rhoads was the greatest. ozzy’s whole solo career has ridden the coat tails of those 2 records. ozz is a great performer, but….at last count 2004.. ozzy was worth 53 million dollars. 53 million !!! =) why are you bitchin dude ? as a last thing bit of advice… quite complaining an jus get to work if you want more.. this time, make sure you provide an album of pure quality song writing. try a new sound.
zakk/ozzy is old
get off the security blanket aready. find that young bad ass guitarist.. take a fresh approach and oh yeh.. get bob back as your bassist/lyricist. write diary style stuff with a fresh perspective. jus my opinion, but its what i’d love to see personally.

Anonymous | 1/5/2009, 9:39 pm EST

maybe he had poor album sales because black rain sucked ass

ozzy juice | 2/14/2009, 8:44 am EST

ozzy needs some new blood around him. I will always buy his cds but they all sound the same. They all have the same themes. I played black rain for two weeks and got bored. I remember playing his Jake e lee, rhoads and early zack stuff for years.

Jen | 2/14/2009, 3:43 pm EST

I saw a guitarist at guitar center. That guy could do the shred stuff you see on youtube. But he is so much more. Makes you see colors. Said his name was Gary j something or other. Can’t remember his last name except he lives in Antioch. Ozzy, you wanna sell cds? Get a real axeman. I am all grown up now. I love ya but I am tired of the kiddie stuff. Zack was old news before he was old news. I would love to hear a great Ozzy cd again. This guitarist I mentioned ain’t no Rhodes but he has an amazing new force about him. I would buy anything he recorded. Find him if you can. Shock and Rock the world one more chapter before the damn socialists enslave us all.

Jen | 2/14/2009, 3:47 pm EST

That is the guitar center in Nashville.

Phoenix you need a reality check when it comes to Zepplin. I saw Ozzy with Jake as well as Zakk, and both of them are far better live than Jimmy page ever was. I challange you to just go and watch soem of Jimmy pages live stuff, and then you will understand the magic of the studio. I would say even if he himself is too humble to ever say it himself or even agree with what I am about to say that even Randy jackson of Zebra is better live than Jimmy page. I like Zepplin, but let’s face it they put out just a few albums, and will always be held in high regards by everyone for those few works, but they also put out some real crap like their last couple of albums, and Robert Plant refuses to even tour at all so at least give Ozzy soem credit for playing 90 Concerts this year since none of his peers such as Plant or daltry are going to do that.

Nuff Said !!

Ozzy Owns | 2/24/2009, 7:22 am EST

The Black Rain Album Was Fucking Great… but i know what he means when he says illegally downloaded music… considering i have every song he ever recorded… and some live songs downloaded on my computer… and i didnt pay a cent for them >:]

JJH | 4/26/2009, 3:37 am EST

I purchased Black Rain on the release date. The cardboard sleeve was a bit cheap. Though the album itself was amazing. Lyrically inspirational. Zakk Wylde rocks. Blasko was a very nice touch on bass. Mike Bordin is always good.

I went to freefest as well as, Ozzy and Rob Zombie at the Key Arena in October. Ozzy’s live shows are top notch.

“It’s in the lives that we lead. Setup for money and greed. A little isn’t enough, we have to use it all up. Success, excess, the truth is inconvenient.”

“Our father’s justice gets closer. How could you fuc* us all over. Rape, steal and murder. God bless the almighty dollar.”

High or sober, Ozzy is genius. Heavy Metal owes him its life. Without Ozzy, rock and roll wouldn’t be half of what it’s been over the years. Without a doubt Ozzy has been dedicated to music as much or more than anyone in the industry, music in general, owes Ozzy its greatest respect.

“Black Rain debuted at #3 on the U.S. Billboard 200, selling about 152,000 copies in its first week. Making it Osbourne’s highest debut to date.”

Henn | 5/8/2009, 11:31 pm EST

I work 365 days a year, and he complains about putting on 90 concerts… What a lazy bum. I like Ozzy’s music, and to an extend I do agree that downloading has hurt album sales. I only downloaded 2 songs from Black Rain. Wouldn’t buy that whole album!

Good luck with the new album though!

Darkblade | 6/13/2009, 1:22 pm EST

Black Rain rocks. However, expecting critics to listen to and acknowledge something artistically mature in a microwave society? Alot to ask. Every layer of sound in the CD is amazing.

However, I can recognize the criticism. All you have to do is tune into a radio station to hear what is “hot.” Emo, dumb@ss stuff being sold as rock and roll and entertainment. Or “metal” bands that are basically clones with deep bass and obligatory unintelligible voices being sold as “the happening bands.”

We are experiencing the ultimate implosion in the music industry. Here today – gone tomorrow, pad the pocket of the record exec bands are upon the industry like swarming hordes of grasshoppers. How else can companies dedicated to music pay their salaries?

These are the disco days revisited. Very disappointing. Myspace gives better opportunity to hear the up and coming than our “leading” voices of rock and roll.

Ozzy makes a valid point for changing times. How will an up and coming band survive? Certainly not from a recording company interested in doing more than making a quick buck off their novelty – and caring less whether they truly have talent that can survive longer than six months in the market.

DJ | 6/24/2009, 5:08 pm EST

ozzy i love ya but no offense…do u really need the extra money? and honestly black sabbath was a lot better (and bigger) than you ever were. Did you ever think maybe its not illegal downloading from “emo” teens but from washed out lazy ass stoners that listen to your GOOD stuff when you were young. If you don’t want ppl to steal your “intellecual” property, then don’t put it out on a record. and paying over $10 for plastic that makes pretty music??? hahaha u r fucking kidding me. and Trent has 100000000x more tanlent, if he didn’t then why can HE afford to put an album out for FREE when you can only cry over your pathetic sales btw. SHARON IS KILLING YOU MAN!!!!

Greg | 7/7/2009, 3:06 pm EST

Hey ozz i think ur great

Greg | 7/7/2009, 3:06 pm EST

Hey ozz i think ur great

Camspiracy | 7/25/2009, 3:12 am EST

While I wished it didn’t happen to Ozzy, I centainly have no resect for that cow of a wife of his called sharon. Really this is karma for her arrogant pigheaded actions against the fans. The problem with sharon is she disrespecting the fans and has more the miser rock star (Gene Simmons) attitude than Ozzy. Pulling the power on Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden at Ozzfest, removing Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake from Blizzard Of Oz and Diary Of a Madman for royalties at a time when all band members were told they were equal partners. I wonder if they would’ve done the same to Randy Rhoads had he lived?

Farve Fan | 9/11/2009, 8:51 am EST

Hey all you poser’s on here
dis-respecting ozzy sure as hell can’t be real fans who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s .
Ozzy has paid his dues in the music Biz….and you cheap ass’s out there can’t spend $12 for a cd….how lame of fake fans are you….hey maybe when ozzy comes to your place of employment …maybe he can get his tour bus fixed and dinner for free since you lossers out there like to take ozzy’s music for free…you lame farts!
By the way Trent Razor is a warm turd on the sidewalk and has zero music skills ….yeah like all that noise with keyboards and special effects is so chalk full of talent….I think not!
Ozzy is a real music man and I respect him very much !
60’s 70’s and 80’s music forever !
Also if you got money to eat out or go on vacation…then you got money to buy Ozzy’s Cd’s people !
Now piss off you who are fake fans of ozzy !
The real fans always support ozzy’s cd and goto the shows and buy all the goodies !
