Axl Rose Does Not Respond Well To Criticism

10/31/07, 3:42 pm EST

Former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash made his way to David Letterman’s couch last night to promote his new autobiography, called simply Slash: The Autobiography. When quizzed by Dave regarding the current state of his relationship with Axl Rose, Slash not only relayed an amusing anecdote about the GN’R singer; he unknowingly also unlocked the entire Chinese Democracy mystery. Slash told a story about the early days, when Axl was just a skinny redhead who was crashing on Slash’s grandma’s couch. One day, after Axl refused to relinquish his borrowed bed for Slash’s grandma to sit on, Slash cautiously confronted Rose about the incident while driving to band practice. Rose responded the same way most of us would: By jumping out of a car going forty miles per hour. Like Slash said, Axl had to be “handled with kid gloves” from that point on. The audience and Dave laughed, Amazon.com sold some additional copies of Slash, yet this story unlocks some major clues into the mind of Axl. The man cannot handle criticism. If Slash’s grandma’s lack of a seat forces Rose to throw himself from a moving vehicle, imagine what the full-throng critical assault Chinese Democracy has postmarked its way the second it hits record stores will do to Axl’s psyche. He might jump off a building. Here we’ve been branding Rose as some Brian Wilson-esque perfectionist, when in fact he’s just someone who fears critical response. Prove us wrong, Axl. Release the damn thing already.

Axl Rose is a childish douche bag who has trouble fulfilling contracts and upholding commitments to appear at concerts. He’s a talentless hack. I watched the video for this new tune “Chinese Democracy”? And actually laughed out loud during its duration. Like he gives a shit about China? This video mish mash of stock war footage from Iraq, Somalia and other areas of conflict are slapped together haphazardly to a tune with ridiculously boring chord structure and lyrics that sound like they were written by an angry 13 boy recently discovered living in a time capsule from 1983. This will be the height of all doucebaggery and hopefully he’ll finally be laughed into the idea of doing himself in.

I think the problem is that Guns N Roses are such legends and that people have immortalized them in their minds in such a way that it seems too hard for people to let go of their beloved image and emotions attached to the original Guns N Roses and their sound.

It’s been almost 2 decades now that slipped by. They can’t write the same youthful street songs filled with raw rock. As artists though they can grow and develop new sounds. I am not sure that the public is ready to accept Axl’s new version of Guns N Roses. His band admits to not wanting to grow into a new sound either. They wanted to keep playing Appetite music.

Personally, I like the new Guns N Roses sound. I don’t want them to try and keep selling Appetite to me. They just never could (nor should they) reproduce that. It’s legend. They needed to let it go and move on.

Who cares about their personal lives or Axls problems. It’s what makes him a genius artist. So, many artists have had troubles that drove their genius creativity. People need to mind their own buisness and let the artist create his magic and just appreciate it.

Axl smokes helmut now. really. This is why GNR broke up.

Charles Sybesma | 6/26/2008, 3:42 pm EST

I feel that Axl is getting more bad criticism than he diserves. I mean GNR’s new music might not be what it used to be, but some people like it more and some less than their old stuff. It all really depends on the type of music you like. There is no bad music, there is only peoples oppinions. Also I feel that this still is GNR, because Izzy Stradlin, and W. Axl Rose are the ones who formed the band in the first place, but again that’s my oppinion. People can’t take the change of GNR from what they were to what they are now, so they bash whichever member of the band seems most responsible for taking away your old GNR. I for one am looking forward to Chinese Democracy, even know I have not liked too much of what i’ve heard of it so far. If you don’t want to listen to Axl of hear about him, then I would reccomend not reading things about him. I personally think Axl is an amazing singer, but has some problems in his life that effect his music and atitude. But everyone is entitled to their oppinions in this subject, but I feel criticizing him for no reason is wrong. Even if you don’t like him, and feel he’s responsible that the original GNR isn’t together, just think about the subject, because if it wasn’t for Axl the band you know and love would not have ever came to be. He is the one who brought the band together, and is the voice of the band. Without him it wouldn’t be the same. Just as now without the rest of the band it’s not the same, because no matter what member it is, if you remove a member of a band it changes their experiences, and would indirectly effect the band. If you liked the album Apetite for Destruction, remember that all of the songs were writen by individual members of the band, but that the songs creation and inspiration lie in the other band members also. For example, the hit song Night Train, from the album Apetite for Destruction was written by Izzy Stradlin, but came to be because Axl, Slash, Duff, and Izzy were running through the streets drunk as hell, yelling “We’re on a night train”, which influenced Izzy to write the song. So before you criticize Axl or any other member of the band, please think that if you took any member out of the band, than it would be a completely diferent band, and that one member doesn’t make the band, and that if you want the same band, than you need all of the members; For if you want something to function properly, you need all of the parts together.

Roy | 4/29/2008, 11:59 pm EST

Slash > Axl totally.
The only reason Axl acts all tough and starts fights is cuz he got 20 body guards backing him up. Hes a 50 year old fat ass who still thinks hes a badass. I think GNR should reunite to the old lineup- replacing Axl with Scott Weiland- at least Scott doesn’t sound like shit and can actually hit notes.

Long long time... | 4/18/2008, 10:17 am EST

Good old days… Will never come back. Sad. GN’R 1986-93..

Shane | 3/29/2008, 11:49 am EST

If you assholes hate Axl so much why the hell are you reading these articles about him?

DarumaJr | 3/28/2008, 12:00 pm EST

It’s MORE than a little sad anyone still pays attention to Axl Rose in any way, shape or form…..The glory days are gone, and only a new band will bring the pleasure we seek.

Matthew | 3/28/2008, 5:36 am EST

Axl Rose is fatter than old-Elvis, with half the voice. Guns’n'Roses were the best in the world…for about 15 minutes. Who cares at this point. If Chinese Democracy is ever finally released, I won’t waste the money. They’re about as interesting as Steely Dan at this point.

nicole | 3/27/2008, 9:27 pm EST

hey true rocker fans already know thats how Axl is and love him all the more for it. But seems to me the stories being told are probobly exaggerated. He’s still being mentioned in a book that i shall be on my way to buy now.

You scare me Axl | 11/26/2007, 10:32 am EST

I briefly caught Axl on TV for some Hollywood event. He had red, white and blue braids and something that resembled a bad face lift. Axl you scare me.

Slash hasn’t sold out, he just gotten older like all of us will. He is still cool & always was, Axl on the other-hand has got serious problems.

exslasher | 11/5/2007, 12:39 am EST

slash whatever happened to you? your concert was fuckin’ boring, you sold out fat prick. And your band sucks!

vrsucks | 11/5/2007, 12:38 am EST

vr sucks live, I’d rather listen to AXL singin’ welcome to the jungle, than that fuckin singer they have.

Grant | 11/4/2007, 7:59 pm EST

Axl has sucked since he did that music for the ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ movies

cookie monster | 11/3/2007, 1:53 pm EST

From another perspective, artists who write and create for themselves often reach out to listeners and viewers who relate to their statements, on personal, social and political levels. Some dreams do come true - hang on to the positive ones.

Tim | 11/3/2007, 12:19 pm EST

Sorry to say Ali, but you’re living in a delusional world if you really believe that artists write the music for themselves. Maybe indi artists, but certainly not mainstream artists. For one thing, producers and record execs don’t let them, for another, once they taste the money, they wouldn’t even try. They know the formula. That’s why you see guys go off and make a solo record, they’ve got songs they want to record that simply don’t sound like the type of song their band would do and, therefore, their fans would put up with.

That said, and if possible, keep dreaming. It’s a very nice dream.

Thorsten | 11/3/2007, 12:06 pm EST

Ed Van Halen seems to function with Roth, can’t Rose get the same stuff they give Ed?

Scott Blugrind | 11/3/2007, 11:31 am EST

I hope Axl dumps that album in the trash and gets the original band (with Matt Sorum in) to do a real “Guns & Roses” album.
When Robert Plant makes a record and tours with no other members of Zep, it is called a Robert Plant tour and album.
Axl please finish your SOLO ALBUM. Than put together the band that made you a star back together.
Scott can go back to STP and two of my favorite bands of all time will be back. Yeah for rock fans.

axlsthebest | 11/3/2007, 1:27 am EST

Slash you are dead for me and I went to see your shitty band in Sacramento, the most boring concert I’ve ever attended to, and apparently not many people is interested in that fucking band ‘cuz only about 2,800 people showed up in a place that holds 20,000, and now you write your fucking biography and go to those shitty tv programs well, fuck you
at least new gnr does good concerts.

axlsthebest | 11/3/2007, 1:22 am EST

Fuck you RS and the fuckturd who wrote this article, Axl will realise it whenever the fuck he wants, and slash well… sad he’s going to letterman now… sad, it’s funny how they always ask him about Axl, I guess it’s the only interesting thing to talk about.

Kevin C. | 11/2/2007, 12:49 pm EST

The fact that people, the media especially, are even interested in Chinese Democracy absolutely floors me. What space Rolling Stone does use for discussing ANYTHING Axel in the magazine and on the web site could be saved for more important things, that’s for sure. We’re going to look back in 50 years and wonder why the fuck we were even interested in this jackass and the music he fails to release.

Brian | 11/2/2007, 12:12 pm EST

I love how people are saying, “Ah, the new stuff’s great,” like you have a fucking copy of the record. Sheep do amuse me. Yes, I know they played songs live. Big, big difference from live to disc.

And man, the comments by ny78ny. Hahaha. Wow. Hey pal, it’s called elementary school. Maybe someone should have sent you there.

Ken B. | 11/2/2007, 12:22 am EST

Axls got a mouth full of my nuts right now, and he wants you all to know “Mmmmph mmmph mmph mmmmmmph!!” So there!

I hate New York | 11/1/2007, 8:26 pm EST

Brian Gallagher is a genius. His comment was so true. If axl had that kind of creativity we might still listen to his stuff.

Bill gates | 11/1/2007, 6:21 pm EST

JUST RELEAS THE DAMN ALBUM ALREADY I WANA HEAR IT

ny78ny | 11/1/2007, 6:11 pm EST

u motherfuckers love to hate. dont like the new guns then go listen to fall out boys u fucking homos? and what the fuck do u haters do besides hating u fucking clowns. whats up axl i know u reading this shit u go right ahead and release that album were waiting!!

Captain Fucknuts | 11/1/2007, 4:46 pm EST

Axl who?? Guns & What??? Oh Fuck it

Wayne | 11/1/2007, 4:22 pm EST

I seriously doubt that the stuff Axl supposedly plans to release will be THAT great. I mean, what could he possibly do that will really make the music world stand on its head. I mean, “Appetite For Destruction” was great in its ow right, but it was nothing incredibly special in the grand scheme of things. It wasn’t incredibly original, and it certainly doesn’t hold up to truly classic albums of our time. If we never hear “Chinese Democracy”, I don’t think we’ll be any worse off than we are now.

brian gallagher | 11/1/2007, 12:49 pm EST

Axl Rose and his pinched nut vocals are things of the past. He is a douche bag and so are the mullet heads still waiting for his recorded farts…..

Ali | 11/1/2007, 12:07 pm EST

Cracker Barrel,

I never said Axl was a genuis. I said he was a perfectionist, or he maybe as is so widely reported. There’s a big difference. All this talk about him not taking criticism well about his music is based off of a story from the mid-eighties that had nothing to do with music that this RS writer decided to take and make into an armchair psychology session.

Ali

Ali | 11/1/2007, 12:03 pm EST

Sorry to say DeadHorse, but you are deluding yourself if you think music is made for the fans. Music is made for the artists themselves. They write music as a means of expressing themselves. They don’t do it for their fans.

Ali

jaoman1 | 11/1/2007, 11:12 am EST

talk about axl or whatter you want slash. guy has to sell books and frankly weiland isn’t as interesting as axl. like velvet revolver alot though………

Anonymous | 11/1/2007, 9:58 am EST

This world just wouldnt be the same for me without Axl and Slash…Comm’on Axl…we need some good music to party on a friday night like the good ol days to

RE: Cracker Barrel | 11/1/2007, 8:34 am EST

go spread some disease!

RE: Cracker Barrel | 11/1/2007, 8:31 am EST

You’re on the list!!!
You’re one in a million!!!

Cracker Barrel | 11/1/2007, 8:17 am EST

hey Ali, they would stick to talking about music if there was music to talk about. Over a decade of no new material except for that crappy song from End of Days is NOT the sign of genius. If you cant take criticism, its the sign of being a puss. And all this sensitivity from the guy who wrote “One in a Million”.

When the first reports said back in the 90’s that Chines Democracy sounded like “Soundgarden meets Nine Inch Nails”, we all should’ve known it was over.

And no one talks or asks about Scott Weiland because nobody cares.

Jeff | 11/1/2007, 2:15 am EST

The new songs are amazing, Izzy is cool with Axl, and Axl is a damn fool for sitting on this album for so long.

He’s almost 46 fuckin’ years old. And still sings and performs great.

That’s the saddest part. If he had to tune the songs down a few keys and just stood there and the new stuff sucked, I wouldn’t care.

Truly sad. Hurry the f*** up, Axl.

Kurt Loder | 11/1/2007, 1:17 am EST

G n’ R hasn’t created any great music since their first album. What makes anyone think that Axl’s solo project would be good in any way. Who cares??????

tingle flinger | 10/31/2007, 11:11 pm EST

When they hear my music and they deride me, I cry. I just want to be loved. Even when I poo my pants or spit in your face, I want you to love me. As hard as I work on my music, I worry about it that much more, praying you’ll like it. Sometimes I wish you’d just all hate me and get it over with.

Jake Burns | 10/31/2007, 9:17 pm EST

I pray that Chinese Democracy is released after Bush leaves office. He may take the title as a suggestion for his next foreign relations debacle.
By the way, Axl sucks.

DeadHorse | 10/31/2007, 8:50 pm EST

To say that GNR has done anything in the past 10 years better than VR is re-fricking-diculous. At least VR doesn’t screw with its fans and withhold album releases for over a decade. Remember, music is for the fans. Axl Rose sucks. I owe him thanks for turning me into a Velvet Revolver fan…Whether their music is good or not, at least they put it out there for fans and critics to listen to.

Ali | 10/31/2007, 8:01 pm EST

The new stuff is great. Miles ahead of Velvet Revolver. Perfectionist are their own worst critics, so nothing you, Mr. Kreps, or any of your colleagues can say will ever be as harsh as what a perfectionist says to himself.

He doesn’t have to prove anything to you or any other members of the media. Instead of this pathetic armchair psychology, why don’t you stick to talking about music?

w | 10/31/2007, 7:05 pm EST

ummm - axl as brian wilson-esque genius? i’m speechless. that is the dumbest statement ever, regardless of sarcasm.

Nikki | 10/31/2007, 6:02 pm EST

I love old Guns N’ Roses but this new stuff I’ve been hearing is crap. So it looks like we might just see what he’ll do. A thanks to Slash for giveing us the heads up. Oh ya, if he could take a litte criticism maybe we’d get the old Guns N’ Rose back

Jacob | 10/31/2007, 4:30 pm EST

Perhaps Slash tells the story about Axl and not a story about Weiland because he was asked about Axl… ?

Dave: “So, how’s Axl doing?”

Slash: “Well, the thing about Weiland, you see…”

Dennis A. | 10/31/2007, 4:08 pm EST

wow… that was great, RS. Axl is an idiot…

? | 10/31/2007, 3:52 pm EST

I love Slash, but isn’t it a little bit sad that he still has to talk about Axl Rose 12 years after the last time they spoke? Why not talk about how crazy Scott Weiland is for a little while?
