Sex Pistols Bring “Anarchy” To L.A., Threaten To Kill Audience Member

10/26/07, 1:52 pm EST

The Sex Pistols performed together for the first time in four years last night at a private show at Los Angeles’ Roxy Theatre as they prepared for their four-date stand at London’s Brixton Academy. An audience of 500 were treated to Sex Pistols classics, performed amid heat and sound problems, and the wine-swilling John Lydon’s typical acidic tongue. The Pistols, who have collected together to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of their Never Mind The Bollocks … Here’s The Sex Pistols, played an hour-long set that featured “Anarchy in the U.K.,” “Holidays in the Sun,” and a version of “Stepping Stone” that contained the lyrics “Paris Hilton, kiss my arse.” At one point, a drink thrown in Lydon’s direction hit him in the face, causing the cantankerous singer to threaten “to kill the coward” if he caught who lunged a beverage at him. Ah, it’s refreshing to know, after thirty years, there’s still so much angst.

This may be an old arguement now, but how can everyone say that the stooges and the new york dolls invented punk? what about the monks, hasil adkins, billy lee riley, screamin’ jay hawkins…

punk isn’t a defined style, it’s an attitude.

If punk did have a beginning it was in high speed improvised jazz, miles davis et al.

“Strait” and “Jeremy” are a couple of whiny jerkoffs!!!
(And they don’t know their music history)

That would be a technical impossibilty for at least one of the individuals you just insulted.

“The beatles did everything before anyone..”

Well, no. They didn’t invent rock and roll, chuck berry, jerry lee, and elvis did.

and the sex pistols didn’t invent punk rock. the dolls and the stooges did.

It`s a fact that The Ramones model themselves after The Beatles Hamburg era. The leather jackes (look at Johnny and Dee Dee`s Beatles haircuts)There names was taken from Paul Mccartney..calling himself Paul Ramone in Germany..

Kenny | 10/29/2007, 2:27 pm EST

The beatles invented Punk rock back in Hamburg circa 1960-61..Playing 8 hour sets everyday in front of a room full of sweaty drunk fighting germans .. The Beatles decked out in leather and full of beer and speed . That was were Punk Rock was invented .The beatles did everything before anyone..

eileen | 10/29/2007, 12:17 pm EST

Oh well, I think all the classic punk bands have their strengths and weaknesess, but the so called punk bands of today, besides Green Day, hold nothing to these pioneers.

Jeremy | 10/29/2007, 5:45 am EST

All bands steal from other bands and I don’t think this makes them bad, per se. David Johansen would be the first to admit the Dolls stole tons of shit from the girl and do-wop groups of the early 60’s. It’s not what you steal, but what you do with what’s stolen.

And this is NOT a knock on the Dolls - they are modern day Gods, in my opinion. The album last year (One Day It Will Please Us…) was fucking great!

I loved and still love “Never Mind The Bullocks” but the Pistols should really try to write a few new songs. It’s been 30 fucking years. But, I’m glad they’re still playing and I pray the shitty younger groups out there are watching. I’m done. Peace. Take care.

strait | 10/29/2007, 5:34 am EST

You said that you are shocked when somebody is nice towards you. I can see why you would be shocked.

strait | 10/29/2007, 5:02 am EST

I was not incorrect. If they invented it, then they obviously influenced it too.

strait | 10/29/2007, 4:59 am EST

Look up the word in the dictionary.

Chinaski | 10/29/2007, 4:40 am EST

you spelled “straight” wrong, too.

Chinaski | 10/29/2007, 4:38 am EST

No, the New York Dolls didn’t influence punk; they, along with the Stooges, invented it!!!

New York Doll | 10/29/2007, 4:35 am EST

it’s my party and i’ll quibble, nibble, or fibble if i want to!!!

strait | 10/29/2007, 4:25 am EST

Ok, so the New York Dolls influenced punk, and the Sex Pistols rebelled against the establishment. Fair enough. But neither of those 2 bands were the founders of *hardcore punk*. So stop the quibbling, and simply stick to what you like.

david duchovny must die | 10/29/2007, 3:00 am EST

they look fuckin’ ridiculous in the picture!

Chinaski | 10/29/2007, 2:29 am EST

something nice to say in my direction. I am truly shocked!

Jeremy | 10/28/2007, 8:55 pm EST

Despite my “defense” of the Pistols, I have to agree with “chinaski”…the Dolls DO NOT get enough credit.

Kenny | 10/28/2007, 4:15 pm EST

heaven and hell ?? come on give me a break..Van Halen 2007 is what real Rock N Roll is about..Dave and Eddie..AND THE Sex Pistols have the fire they always had and You Gotta Love that..

Jeff | 10/28/2007, 3:57 pm EST

Sex Pistols are poseurs, simple as that…let’s see, they kicked out their original bassist (who could actually play the goddamn instrument) for someone who “looked more punk”….they were pretty much put together by a guy who wanted to sell his latest fashion. If there was any band like this nowadays, they would be ridiculed as poseurs and laughed off the stage. What’s so special about these douche-bags? Why do they get special treatment for being followers of a fad? Punk rock was the fad back then. Nowadays it’s emo and pop punk. Same situation, different time period. These guys latched on to what was popular at the time. Fucking POSEURS.

Jake Burns | 10/28/2007, 9:47 am EST

Todd, you are the type of moron that the Pistols and their fans hated then and now!

chinaski | 10/28/2007, 3:00 am EST

I’ll take the New York Dolls over these overrated assholes any day!
They were doing the punk thing 5 years before anyone else!!!

The Ramones stole like mad from the Dolls and the Sex Pistols got their thing from the Ramones. They didn’t start it, despite what everyone says. Punk started in NYC, not England. And it began with the Dolls!!!

Todd from msvl Wa. | 10/28/2007, 2:06 am EST

OH COME ON WHO CARES–THE ONLY GREAT REUNION SHOW THIS YEAR WAS HEAVAN AND HELL ALL PALES IN CONSIDERATION

Gabriel | 10/27/2007, 11:31 pm EST

What has changed in the last 20 years about music other than the way an instrument is played?

These guys are still the sex pistols, no matter how many times they break up, threaten audience member or members of the press.

I think it goes to show you there is original punk out there amongst the tragically hip, “Emo” bands.

God save the queen, The Sex Pistols are back!!!!!

Jerry | 10/27/2007, 10:33 pm EST

I dont care what anyone thinks .I love that one album they put out , still sounds great and will in another 25 years.

what are these idiots talking about money grab? are they born just yesterday? Look at greenday, U2, etc. and some weaklings who are commercially pampered by labels? what money grab? i call it balls grab!

fuck the major labels! | 10/27/2007, 5:48 am EST

Chinaski | 10/27/2007, 3:25 am EST

they were shit when they started. so yeah, 30 years later they’re still shit. thank god the police, blondie, and elvis came along!!! And don’t pontificate to me about their political statements. The band sounded and sounds like shit. Period.

BTW, for all you hopelessly lost anarchists from 1979, Rotten proudly calls himself a conservative now. Now there’s a rock rebel for your ass, right there!

Purple Aki | 10/27/2007, 2:25 am EST

In 1977 the UK had the pathetic spectacle of Teddy Boys - washed up rock n rollers clinging on to something from the 1950’s. It was cringe inducing - and punk rightly exposed it as a worthless, time-capsule fad.In 2007 the Sex Pistols are the Teddy Boys of this generation.
They should be ridiculed, tarred and feathered every time they appear….along with other dinosaurs like the Rolling Stones, the Police and all other corporate elevator music.

Ian Stuart Sayle | 10/27/2007, 2:11 am EST

Take a radical concept. Water it down until it is utterly meaningless. Market it to the point of exhaustion.
Disillusion all those who were once inspired.
And then return back to property development.

Jeremy | 10/27/2007, 12:20 am EST

“Pathetic money grab”??? How enlightening! What a sharp observation!

No one would agree with you more than John Lydon himself!

Also, thank God the “aging rockers” are still doing it because 95% of the young “rockers” fucking SUCK! A bunch of overproduced, pampered, pussies who bought the right clothes and had a record company to pay their tattoo artists.

If Fall Out Boy, Good Charlotte, Sum 41 et. al. had to endure the scorn, hatred and outright violence the Pistols, Black Flag, and other pioneers had to deal with, they’d be working as Hot Topic clerks.

If anyone has earned the right to “pathetic”-ally “grab” some “money”…it’s the Pistols.

Jake Burns | 10/26/2007, 10:51 pm EST

Poseurs, Jeffy? You’re an idiot. Go back to your Fall Out Boy tripe.

Shar | 10/26/2007, 10:45 pm EST

Yes..yawn, yawn, yawn. The “bad boys” in your face antics are cheap entertainment. I’d rather spend my money on real entertainment

Berry | 10/26/2007, 8:30 pm EST

Hey Jeff..What in the fuck have you ever done that would be considered great or remembered ?? Yeah..Thats what i thought..so STFU poser..hahahaha

Jeff | 10/26/2007, 7:38 pm EST

what is so goddamn great about these fuckin poseurs? It sure as shit can’t be their “music”…haha

TPG | 10/26/2007, 7:26 pm EST

Wow. They’re just so dangerous. Hide the women and children.

Yawn.

We’ve seen this tired act played out—about 25 years ago. Now it’s just a pathetic money grab.

Nothing more embarrassing than aging rockers still believing they’re in their prime.

HH | 10/26/2007, 5:20 pm EST

I wish he’d quit w/ the Pistols reunions and make another damn PIL album!

Seth | 10/26/2007, 4:40 pm EST

It’s nice to see that somethings will never change. Didn’t anyone see the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceromony last? That’s classic Sex Pistols.
