Nas Talks To RS About New Album Controversy While Politicians Join Fight To Prevent Title

10/26/07, 5:22 pm EST

In an effort to further gray the area separating free speech and censorship, Brooklyn assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries is demanding that the New York Comptroller withdraw an $84 million state pension fund invested in Universal Music Group and its parent company Vivendi unless Nas changes the title his new album Nigger. “[They are] profiting from a racial slur that has been used to dehumanize people of color for centuries,” Jeffries said. “It is time for Nas and other hip-hop artists to clean up their act and stop flooding the airwaves with the N-word.” According to the Comptroller’s office, he’s intending to the music company and “urge them not to release the album” under that moniker. Universal had no comment.

Rolling Stone’s Evan Serpick recently spoke to Nas regarding the controversy surrounding the new album. While the MC was reluctant to discuss the album’s specifics (”It’s not ready for me to talk about. The album is done, basically, but … it’s a piece of art”), Nas spoke openly about his, and the record label’s, decision to stick with the name. His last album, Hip Hop Is Dead, was supposed to don the title, but “the climate wasn’t right, and Hip Hop Is Dead is also what I was feeling. That went first, and now I’ve got to get this one off my chest,” he explains, turning to speak about the rash of hate crimes involving nooses around the country. “It’s the new act of hate, and probably because of Barack Obama, people’s ignorance and fear and jealousy is creating an outrage throughout the country, and people are reacting by putting nooses up. It’s been a really serious year,” the rapper explained.

So what of all the controversy? “It’s like talking to your child about sex. It’s hard, but it’s important,” he says. “It’s probably going to make people uncomfortable. I don’t expect a lot of people to sell a record called Nigger. Hopefully, people can open their minds up and lose some of their fear and deal with it. It’s just an album. It’s one piece of the many things I do, and this will be one of my favorite pieces.” And his label is firmly behind him, “It will be certain record stores that will be scared to deal with it. The record label is gung ho, and it’s ready to go.”

nas has been an artist from the start and he will continue to an artist. i quote “never conversate with fools coz theyl scon the wisdom of your words” unquote. gs is one of the few rappers out there who still bother to hit us substance in their work….Best rapper alive alwys!!!!

Frank | 8/4/2008, 11:12 pm EST

Nas has intelligent reasons for releasing this album. It’s not to sell records. If you know anything about him then you will know that sales has nothing to do with it. The record industry controls what is realeased. In the recent years the record industy has turned rap into bubble gum. They have the power to control what rappers say. So this is like a big middle finger to the record industry. Nas stands for something more then album sales. Listen and you will see.

people nas is making a point, what is wrong with people if your embar. about the truth of whats going on with our culture then your really lost and brain washed. YOUR AN EMBAR. TO OUR CULTURE NOT NAS!

Taniesha | 2/14/2008, 4:54 pm EST

Why is this hip hop marketing at it’s finest? Oh yeah, because hip hop executives don’t care about Black culture and it’s cool to disrespect a whole race of people for a dollar. Yeah, Nas is a great lyricist and I’m sure his album talks about why we are not n—, but for him and Kelis to wear this tacky, offensive outfit at the Grammy’s with the whole world watching was just wrong and I think they made a BIG mistake. Words are living and the wrong people are going to take his album cover to mean it’s okay to call Black people n—. It’s absolutely not okay! N– represent the institution of slavery and it is emotionally charged with hatred and oppression. Let’s leave this word in the grave and move on to bigger and better things. Nas, you of all people should be above this. No other racial/ethnic or religious group does this to themselves. Why do we? If hip hop is dead situations like this are what killed it.

STREET DISCIPLE | 2/13/2008, 10:07 pm EST

WHATEVER THOUGHTS NAS MAY BE TRYING TO PROVOKE IN HIS ALBUM TITLE, HE COULD HAVE BEEN MORE CREATIVE, I HAPPEN TO KNOW THAT HE IS A MAN OF SUBSTANCE! THIS ALBUM MAY BE THE BEST YET, BUT THIS TITLE IS CERTAINLY THE WORST YET!

don't judge before you know | 2/13/2008, 10:31 am EST

only a fool would judge the album based on it’s name b/f listening to the content. It doesn’t matter who the artist is or what the album is called. Listen to the Lyrics! Have you ever heard the term don’t judge a book by it’s cover, OPen ya minds eye people! Also, why are people saying Nas is embarrasing the whole black race, One black man is not responsible for every black man on this planet. God gave you two eyes and two ears and one mouth. Listen, observe and then use the spoken word. Then you can criticize. ONe

For real | 2/12/2008, 10:11 pm EST

Nas has embarassed the crap out of me. The same people who see nothing wrong with his behavior, are the same ones dippen skoal and cracking slurs. Nas need to put DUMMY on his shirt cause that is him and his music. How could you discrace your whole race like that.
Now go, get you a big gold noose for your neck, paint those big lips red, and shine shoes on the red carpet. Cause you wont get the blacks to support you.

People do things for a reason.
Nas has his reasons and will most likly b for the benifit of the culture.

i think it’s stupid to assume that people are afraid of Barack Obama becoming president. He just won the Iowa caucases, and Iowa is a predominately white state. Obviously not everyone in this country is racist, and perhaps it’s time for some people to stop playing the victim card.

how many meaning does the word have?

people it deep look for the real meaning of the word nigger please
the see if its ok to say everyday

He is Making His Point NOW | 11/7/2007, 4:16 pm EST

Look we are NOT over this word. You can’t cover it up. We gotta talk about it. I don’t necessarily agree with the title but I understand. More than that I’ll make my decision off his lyrics. Nas is an artist I trust to put it all into perspective and bring this word some concious thought. Take heed.

Bootney Farnsworth | 11/6/2007, 8:37 pm EST

Everyone has to wait and listen to the record when it comes out. I have a feeling Nas has something very important to say and I’m prepared to hear him out. Hey, even Michael Jackson had a song in which the ‘N-word’ was dropped (really, check it out). So, everybody needs to relax and let the man speak!

Just Wonderin' | 11/5/2007, 7:40 pm EST

All I want to know is, when I go to the clerk and say gimme the Nigger album, am I a going to have Sharpton on my back or what.

DOES IT REALLY MATTER WHAT NAS CALLS HIS ALBUM??

I DON’T THINK YOUNG PEOPLE ARE GOING TO TURN AROUND AND STOP USING THE “N” WORD BECAUSE NAS SAID STOP…WHEN PEOPLE MENTALLY GROW UP AND REALLY GET A FULL UNDERSTANDING OF THE HARDSHIP AND SUFFERING THAT AFRICANS RECEIVED WHEN WE WERE BROUGHT TO AMERICA IS WHEN WE START MAKING EFFORTS TO STOP CALLING EACH THAT WORD..

THE BANDWAGON IS SUCH A POPULAR PLACE FOR MOST PEOPLE TO JUMP ON….

steve | 11/5/2007, 2:06 pm EST

nas has been around for years, that stupid prick sayin he a modern rapper? im sure this album has some meaning behind it, just like all his songs! lets jus wait till we can hear some of the material, and then judge

AMP-ONE | 10/31/2007, 1:22 pm EST

I been a Nas fan ever since I can remember, and I already know that this album is gonna have one of the deepest, most profound concepts that a rap album has had in a minute. And I’ve been goin through the comments, and I see that everyone that has trashed Nas’s CD has done so based SOLELY on the album title. You honestly don’t think that’s what Nas expected? For those who are truly NIGGERS not to be able to escape their IGNORANCE and look past the title to realize that the content will bring it to make sense? Anyone who is afraid of the title doesn’t deserve to hear the message, and people who get caught up on any word, especially nigger, are truly sad. Truly.

SHiN | 10/31/2007, 5:37 am EST

well nas, i donno wut ta think a ya album. da songs better be tight or u jus drawin attention fo no reason. now knowin da way nas iz, he never dumbed down his shit an stayed lyrical. i give him props fo dat. now im ok wit “nigga” but “nigger” iz an awful word. ya shit better be a classic or u gonna look like a fool. i donno if ppl gonna buy dis shit tho. donno if stores will even carry it. maybe itll be “N*****” or “N-word” instead of da actual word. u dont suppose nas tryina start a race war, right? cuz dat aint nuthin ta fuck around wit dogg.

Let's See | 10/30/2007, 8:11 pm EST

Since 80% of whites buy rap music, let’s see how many come face-to-face with the word NIGGER when Nas releases his album. It is time for everyone to see this word in the written form and to see the reaction of people while purchasing the album. Will there be an awkward moment of silence between the black consumer and the white sales associate; or vice versa? Also, will white parents buy their kid this album? I think so; since that is what they believe they buy their kids with any black persons album. Will we, blacks & whites, finally converse about this word which has unfortunately passed on from generation to generation? We are doing a little bit of that now but we need more. Enough of the hiding behind nooses, closed doors, and by the fear of being called prejudice or racist. Enough! I’m buying the album! I want to see the reactions. I believe we should take it a step further & print shirts with the word Nigger on it just so see how people really feel about blacks.

NAS IS THE KING!! | 10/30/2007, 3:49 pm EST

Leave NAS ALONE HE is an extraordinary lyricist & im sure he is teaching the youth in this new lp I wish we had more mc’s like him!!!!!

lstutta | 10/30/2007, 10:20 am EST

yall need to just listen to the words of the songs on the cd..YOU WILL learn something

Knuckz | 10/30/2007, 10:02 am EST

@ Tashina, blacks need to individually improve themselves. Why do we need an artist to represent a race? The reason whites use the word is because we give it power. Whites don’t get bent out of shape when they’re called Crackers. There is a double standard too. Black Americans (comedians, musicians, etc.) say Cracker all the time and no one says anything. As soon as a White person says Nigger, then those fake MLK (Jesse or Al, pick one) want to have demonstrations. Like the Rutgers issue or Michael Richards comments. Black Americans want the whole world to “baby” them while they say what they want. Wake up people, break the mental chains. Those that give power to the word are probably the ones that fit the perceived definition of a Nigger. Listen to Chris Rocks “Black People vs Niggers.” There is a difference between the two. I’m sorry for rambling, but I hate to see our people hold on to the “inferiority complex.”

It's Art! | 10/30/2007, 8:36 am EST

It was ok when Tupac did it! The only way to destroy something is to own it! The title alone will sale records and make people listen and understand how sick Amerikkka is…… No more dumb it down music. Smack the critics up side their Nas!

FYI: biggie hated NAS (see ready to die)and dissed him regularly.
Tupac dissed Nas to his face every time he came to NYC (see youtube).
This dude will do anything to stay in the lime-lite. He’s a desperate clown….typical prostitute who had a baby by a whore then married a new whore!

Nas claims the one of the reasons he is naming the album N word. is because young black males can relate. But what he fail to see is white people buy’s 80% or rap albums. So at the store mainly a bunch of white kids are going to be buying a album called N

Daron Jabari | 10/29/2007, 4:48 pm EST

I expect “Nigger” to be nothing less than stark brilliance. Nas is a harbinger. I will be waiting with bated breath to give this album a discerning listen.

Tashina | 10/29/2007, 4:08 pm EST

All I have to say is that I hope he doesn’t get any support for his album, although my gut tells me that he will. This title is the work of pure ignorance (as is most rap music-not all imo) and it isn’t doing anything to improve black people in America.

Also, that chain is a hot mess.

Knuckz | 10/29/2007, 3:58 pm EST

Anyone who listens to Nas’ music knows that he is not just going to called an album Nigger for the hell of it. Just like he didn’t call his last album HHID for the hell of it. Nas, like KRS goes against the grain with their art. Dick Gregory and a few others wrote books with the word Nigger in the title. People see the word and automatically “assume” that Nas is going to say bad things because he is a hip hop artists. How do they know that he is not going to talk about its origin? Why do we give power to that word anyway? Nigger means ignorant, not black. Plus people saying that they are not going to buy the album because of the title; how does it differ from the artists using in their songs? Personally I think that White America hate that rappers use the word because it takes the power out of the word when they use it against us. Just my opinion.

Latifa | 10/29/2007, 3:51 pm EST

I have always been a NAS fan!! NAS is an intelligent well spoken lyracist who has been in the game for years schooling these damn fools on real shit going on in the world!! I don’t understand why he’s getting dissed left and right about a stupid album title!! If NAS decided to name his album Ni**** there is a VERY good reason behind it. I truly believe that he has something very important to say about this subject if he chose to name his album NI**ER. It is a new day people and things like this need to be addressed!! If we (black folks)take power from the word, how can it continue to hurt anyone?!?!? NAS I believe in you wholeheartedly and f**K what these people have to say!!

Dee | 10/29/2007, 3:36 pm EST

IF this was Jay Z naming his album Nigger……..everyone would be riding his nutsacks! I say do you Nas. If yall don’t like it, don’t buy it, like I don’t buy Jay Z CD’s with his bragging ass! His CD’s = no substance at all!

WE NEED TO DO AWAY WITH THE NIGGER MENTALITY,THE WORDS WILL FOLLOW -I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD JUST ADRESS THEIR FEARS

Free speech isn't free | 10/29/2007, 11:21 am EST

Nas is free to say what he wants and title his album however he sees fit, but he needs to be prepared for the consequences.

This is still a market-driven society and the advertisers/sponsors will leave.

That’s what prevents the NY Times from printing F bombs on their pages. That’s what made CBS run off Imus. That’s also what sent Stern to subscription satellite radio.

Stern is making more money than ever, but it’s in a market where his content is tolerated. Nas may find that too.

Spirit | 10/29/2007, 10:45 am EST

This author knows nothing about the First Amendment. New York state has the right to divest from any company it wants to, that’s not making a law abridging free speech, it’s saying New York state won’t hold onto shares in the company underwriting the speech. You’re free to say anything, that doesn’t mean you’re free of market consequences for saying anything, i.e. if Nas wants to say this so bad, he shouldn’t need a record label to pay him to say it, he can release it on his own.

NIGGER means ignorant person. that was the definition until Webster changed it to what it has in their today. All of these people against it, need to check theirselves. Nas is a very intelligent, very pro black man, his music stands and speaks for itself. I plan on buying it. I know he has some very interesting thoughts and views about the state of black america.

NasSupporter | 10/29/2007, 9:30 am EST

I think those that are Nas fans (like me) already know that there is going to be a message behind this title. If you truly listen to the lyrics of his songs they ALL have a message to them. There was so much controversy with him naming his last album “Hip Hop is Dead” but the sad thing is…he’s right! What’s really sad is, we hate for the N-Word to be used out of other people’s mouths but yet WE continue to use it as if it’s okay. I think this album is going to discuss the controversy behind it and the abolishment of it. I say, get the album and pay attention because trust, it’s going to be deep!

first we should listen to his music inorder to get a greater sense of WHY he called the album NIGGER….if its for sum stupid ass using nigger as a “ghetto” term of endearment then he’s being a degrading bastard…if its for satire and to spark thought of anti-racial thought then GO NAS UR AN AMESOME DUDE! wait til u listen to the album n lyrics to decide…nas hopefully u didnt do anything stupid I.E. fill a cd, like a certain rapper, DMX, with contradiction and degrading lyrics. like his songs about having a baby with a girl n then callling the girl a HO n a bitch…or ranting about shooting people for not being ur dog…pardon DAWG…thats the cool way to spell it. oh but u cant blame him he’s a christian and that redeems him. thats why he has all those PRAYER skits in his cds….nas better not let me down…nas bttr not let THE PPL down

Nas wants to reach the ppl with his music. 50 Cent is beefin with other MC’s to receive attention. I’m not too crazy about Nas, and after that tell-all by his ex-girlfriend I don’t have much respect for him anymore (he’s go absolutely no respect for women, even his own mother who was forced to work full time even after Nas made it big, because her son wouldn’t support her). I feel like this is an obvious way for him to get attention for what may otherwise be a mediocre album (after all, we’re talking about the title, not the music!). It’s disgusting how “artists” these days try to get attention by doing everything they can, except make good music. If his album was dope, he wouldn’t have to give it an offensive name to get people to talk about it.

I hope that Nas finally hits one out of the park! Most celebrities use controversy to stir up publicity and sales. At least he is doing it based on his art. Nas has been around forever. I hope he gets recognition and appreciation before his career ends. Its time, Nas is going to hit a reniasance and come into his own. Good luck man, you deserve it!
