Open-Letter Mailbag, Redux: Radio DJs Respond To Rob Thomas’ Open Letter With Open Letter

10/25/07, 5:13 pm EST

On what we in the biz might call a “slow news day,” we now bring you an update on a story that was blown out of proportion this morning with … another story that will probably accomplish the same thing. Earlier, we told you about Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty’s MySpace tirade against Charlotte, North Carolina rock jocks Matt & Ramona. We listened to clips of the supposed incident and agreed that the typically level-headed Thomas may have overreacted, even though it’s a rocker’s job to defend his fans from scrutiny. Whatever your opinion is on this bizarre flap, we doubt the incident really warranted two open letters, and this much typing. But here it is: Matt & Ramona have issued an open letter in response to Thomas’ letter, so check after the jump for the complete text.

An Open Letter to Rob Thomas and Matchbox 20

Thank you for the open letter posted on your MySpace website. Please accept this response as our attempt to clear the air.

Anyone who listens to our show knows our personalities and how we use tongue-in- cheek tirades to entertain our listeners. We are definitely confused about your blackmail comments. We can only assume you were given false information.

This is not the first time we have ranted about a disappointing occurrence. However, it is the first time that we have had such an over the top response by irate fans. Not the least of which include physical threats and letters to our sponsors.

When we read one of your fans’ emails over the air, we were merely pointing out that the person writing the email obviously did not hear our show or know the facts of the situation.

It was humorous to us, and most of our listeners, that someone would write us about how wrong we were, while admitting that they didn’t “actually” hear what was said. This reminded us of the gossip game where words are twisted each time they pass to another person’s ears.

So we posted links of the show on our website to clear everything up. We believe that if anyone wants to defend MB20 they should know exactly what they are defending you from. The situation seemed to snowball because of our tendency to make fun of those who are taking this too seriously, and your fans feeding you false or misleading information.

Again, thanks for your letter,

Matt and Ramona

P.S. We never claimed, as someone must have told you, that we are the same Matt and Ramona you thank in your liner notes. We have also posted, in our archives, a show where we discussed how funny it is that you have friends also named Matt and Ramona. We were well aware of this, since in a previous interview you told us about “your” Matt and Ramona.

First off, I’d like to say that this whole situation has gotten way too out of hand. Instead of all the “he said, they said”, there needs be a one-on-2 conversation to clear the air.
The last thing Matt & Ramona are is vicious or vindictive and anyone that has taken more than 2 minutes to listen to their show know this. The same can be said for Rob Thomas. If it was a scheduling conflict, food poisoning, whatever, so be it. Sh–happens!
At this point, the fans that left work and so forth to be at Matt & Ramona’s meet and greet need to be “made right” by MB20 which is all M&R have asked for since all this silliness began. If this is too daunting of a task for MB20 then all I can say is “bless your heart” (and any true southerner knows what that really means!)
Call a truce guys!

Karen | 10/25/2007, 5:34 pm EST

Hahahaha. So silly of Rob Thomas not to check facts out. Sounds like he’s got a guilty conscience! Liar liar pants on fire

Rae | 10/25/2007, 5:51 pm EST

I listened to this whole ordeal from the beginning. Matt & Ramona were WRONGED and SLANDERED by Rob Thomas. He owes them and the radio station an apology for the lies he told in his open letter. They have shown “class” and “honesty” through this whole stressful ordeal. In my opinion, the radio station should sue Thomas for slander.

Jennifer | 10/25/2007, 6:11 pm EST

I can’t believe how childish Rob and Paul are acting about this! Posting an open letter on myspace hoping the radio people would read it.. Not very professional behavior. They sound like whinning babies to me!

Josh Henderson | 10/25/2007, 6:27 pm EST

Rob Thomas should have taken a minute to get his facts straight before he flew off half-cocked with such a childish open letter. Aparrently his sources (nut-job MB20 fanatics) are about as reliable as the chef/cook who served him a heaping helping of food poisoning. I drive for a living, and listen to Matt and Ramona everyday, so I have heard this thing from the begining, and the allegations that these fans, and now Rob himself, are making could not be any further off base. By their own admission, they have never even listened to the Matt and Ramona Show. They have no idea what was and was not said! Basically the way I see it, MB20 lied, got caught, and now they are pouting about it. And they are trying to tarnish the reputation of two very fine radio talk show hosts (not DJs you morons) because their pride got hurt a little. It is time for MB20 to suck it up, appologize, and find some way to make it up to all the adoring fans who probably took off work just to meet them that day. To be such big stars, MB20 sure has some thin skin. Get over it boys and do what is right!!

Mich | 10/25/2007, 6:30 pm EST

I live in Charlotte & listen to M&R. The whole thing is out of hand. You know the old saying when you assume, you make an ass….. Mr Thomas should have looked into this b4 he reacted. People have sent threating emails to M&R based on his open letter. They believe what his open letter states as the truth. That’s what is wrong w/this world.

Brian | 10/25/2007, 6:47 pm EST

It seems to me a little white lie from MB20s’ handlers caused this to turn into a Jerry Springer episode of words. As a long time fan of MB20 I am hoping they will make this right for the DJ’s and their fans.

Ray | 10/25/2007, 7:08 pm EST

Matt & Ramona are full of BS. They most definitely were not just “using tongue-in-cheek”; they were pissed and nasty about it. Thomas’s people didn’t lie. Nbody at the station gave his management time to re-arrange another get together. They accused him (or his management) of lying, said he obviously wasn’t sick since he made another scheduled appearance. The dude was sick and they acted like idiots and didn’t give him time to make it up to them or the assembled fans before they started bashing him and demanding an apology or else they would never play his music again. Sounds like blackmail to me.

Hannah | 10/25/2007, 7:12 pm EST

Atlantic Records should be ashamed of their behavior! Lying and not taking responsibility for their actions.
It shows a lot about their character.

John | 10/25/2007, 7:40 pm EST

Things Matt said immediately after:

You’ll never hear matchbox twenty again. The food poisoning is crap. I don’t love the new cd any more. They bailed because they felt like it. It’s bullcrap. They are banned from the show. Bag all their music. Sons of bitches. Bitchbox. Scumbox twenty. Liberal lamos.

Ray | 10/25/2007, 7:47 pm EST

Read Rob Thomas’ letter. He is offering free tickets/passes to their concert to any fan that was waiting at the station. Matt & Ramona were moronic.

Brian | 10/25/2007, 8:20 pm EST

Being one of the winners who was stood up, I contacted the station today to find out about my tickets and passes for their upcoming show next year. Matt and Ramona haven’t been contacted by Matchbox’s people yet, so we’re still waiting for him to make this thing right! He should have done that before he stated it in a letter. As of right now it’s just a big lie to save face for the band

M'Shel | 10/25/2007, 9:29 pm EST

It is very easy to forgive others their mistakes; it takes more grit and gumption to forgive them for having witnessed your own. ~Jessamyn West

MB20’s mgmt should have put this right. Rob should have never blogged without listening to the show. The pod casts are there but I suppose he’s to busy blogging to be bothered to actually listen to what was said.

Jim | 10/25/2007, 9:52 pm EST

Sorry M’Shel, it seems painfully obvious that MB20 management never had a chance to make it right before the band was getting insulted by Matt & Ramona. How do you know Rob Thomas never heard the show? Besides the clips that were posted, I have a feeling someone at Atlantic records probably knows how to get hold of a radio broadcast. Face facts, Rob’s letter showed intelligence and class. Matt & Ramona showed they’d rather sensationalize a situation then wait and learn the whole story and get everything “back to good”. The fact that Rob is human and finally had it with being slammed by idiots makes me respect the guy. Way to man up, Rob!

Sharon | 10/25/2007, 10:07 pm EST

MB20 must be taking lessons from Britney and Lindsay. You know, when there is no news, make some and people will remember who you are. They are using this publicity to try and up there ticket and CD sales. I won’t be buying any. Matter of fact, when I hear their music on the radio, I’m going to change the station.

John | 10/25/2007, 11:04 pm EST

Brian, has the tour officially been announced yet? I would think once they actually have dates set, they’ll make it up to you as was stated. They can’t give away tickets yet. Be patient.

Sharon, they didn’t start the publicity. Those childish, crude djs did. So who actually needed publicity? I’ll never listen to those two after the bile they spewed on the air in such a pathetic attempt at humor.

Wanda | 10/25/2007, 11:18 pm EST

I too have been listening to this from the beginning. Matt and Ramona were “poking fun” not being malishous. Rob Thomas should make it right, shake hands and call a truce.. please let this tyraid die a respectible death.

Sonny | 10/26/2007, 2:10 am EST

Sorry, but Matt & Ramona were being MALICIOUS. They started this TIRADE. Rob Thomas is the only one who comes off looking RESPECTABLE.

I like both | 10/26/2007, 7:56 am EST

Rob & Paul were playing at another radio station at the exact time they were to be on with Matt & Ramona. They (rob & paul/management) cancelled 10 minutes before they were supposed to go on air at 107.9 and said they had food poinsoning.

Enough said

Anonymous | 10/26/2007, 8:42 am EST

“They” didn’t have food poisoning; Rob Thomas did. He explained the timing situation in his letter. Would it have been nice to know earlier that he wouldn’t have been able to make it? Probably. But, as he explained, they had already missed one appointment due to his illness and I am sure his management was trying to figure out how they were going to re-arrange their schedule up to the last minute. It’s not easy to do when your star has been vomiting for 5 straight hours and is not sure when it’s going to stop. I’m sure split decisions have to be made and, unfortunately, someone had to get the short end of the stick. Either way, M & R should have been upset that his MANAGEMENT didn’t contact them sooner, not Rob Thomas or his band. I’m sure, as Rob had his head hanging over the toilet, the first thing he tried to say was, “Please, call Matt & Ramona and reschedule!” Give the guy a break!

Socrates | 10/26/2007, 8:46 am EST

As much as like discussing rock music instead of philosophy, seriously, this is moronic.

Rob Thomas needs to pull his panties out of his butt crack and so do his over zealous fans.

Michelle | 10/26/2007, 10:09 am EST

I wish people would get over it. Everyone who has their panties in an uproar over this are overreacting! It’s called comedy. Do you see this type of reaction when the host of an awards show pokes fun at a star? NO! Do you see this reaction to any of the stand up comics that use tongue in cheek sarcastic comedy? NO!

GET OVER YOURSELVES!!

Stuporfly | 10/26/2007, 10:10 am EST

They should settle this with a fight to the death with pool cues.

Who would win? Those of us who hate Matchbox 20 and no-talent wacky morning DJ’s in equal measure.

FIGHT!!!

FIGHT!!!

FI GHT!!!

angelgurl9781 | 10/26/2007, 11:13 am EST

How many of you that are making these comments have even listened to the pod cast or even to the show? You are making snap judgements about people that you have no idea about! When you go back and listen to the pod cast it becomes very clear that MB20 overbooked themselves and just did not want to admit it. These DJ’s are not in it for the glory they have tried time and time again to put the whole issue to rest. That is why they issued an open letter to the open letter. The ones that keep bringing it up are the MB20 fans. Come on people let’s say enough is enough and go on our way.

me | 10/26/2007, 11:18 am EST

I also have heard it all from the beginning….it is a bunch of crap….I listen to M&R every day and they are awesome!! This junk with MB20 talking crap is ridiculous!!!Rob Thomas needs to grow up and shut up…Matt & Ramona ROCK!!

Jim | 10/26/2007, 11:59 am EST

I can see the radio station’s staff has a lot of idle time on their hands. Oh well, when you’re paid by the hour any thing you can do to fill the time….

Jessica | 10/26/2007, 12:03 pm EST

Wah Wah Wah.
I would think a rock star would have more on his plate than to worry about drive time jocks.
When was the last time Bono wrote a letter to a radio station?

Matt & Ramona Listener | 10/26/2007, 12:14 pm EST

Grow up people.

Erica | 10/26/2007, 12:31 pm EST

Rob Thomas, Matchbox 20 and their fans should of got their facts strait before they flew off the handle. And it’s not cool to send people threating letters. Grow up people! Or should I say Matchbox 20 fans! There’s more important things going on in this world!!!

Charlotte | 10/26/2007, 12:59 pm EST

MB20’s open letter is BS. Not once does he mention that they cancelled 10 minutes before they were going to be on the air. Obviously they knew before that (since they weren’t at the studio). and if they were so concerned about making it up to the fans why not send something over to the studio like some autographs (he said they were in traffic for over an hour can’t sign 12 pieces of paper) or tell the M&B Show they planned on making it up. M& R would have said that on their show. he states in his open letter he was trying to book a flight to charlotte but then heard what was said on the show and the 1 email was read (which was read THE FOLLOWING afternoon) so I guess MB20 (or their management) wasnt too concerned that day considering they were across town doing another show where there were more people. Seems like all they cared about was the amount of people at an event and the fact that a station that plays alot of their music was no longer going too. If they were so concerned about making itup to the fans at the Link studio seems like they would have done something that afternoon or talked to someone at the link that day or even just state that they were going to.

Billie | 10/26/2007, 1:04 pm EST

I listen to matt and romona daily, and was listening the day Mr.Rob had his food poisoning. It would seem to me that a popular rock star with fans to impress would have a doctor with a shot somewhere to help ease his vomiting(that I now feel like doing when I hear the mention of Rob). At the very least a roady who has been hung over, and knows what Pepto is.The pink stuff that eases vomiting. I think a public apology is needed to matt and Romona, who were only looking out for the entertainment of their fans.Aswell as MB20 fans. And hey Rob howbout an autographed picture for you fans that were left standing, and dissapointed.

Laura | 10/26/2007, 1:54 pm EST

Rolling Stone, MB20 & fans:

“we doubt the incident really warranted two open letters, and this much typing,” – Rolling Stone article.

The open letter was M&R’s way of picking on Rob Thomas for his open letter on his myspace page – again, a JOKE. He claimed he was so “busy”, yet he had time to write a letter and have it posted not only on the band’s myspace page, but on their fan website and – this “busy” rock star – has also had time to discuss this: 1) on a Columbus, OH radio station; 2) to People magazine; 3) to Rolling Stone magazine and some TV station in Dallas, TX. It’s M&R’s humor. Just to show how ridiculous this whole thing is. My God, the way Rob Thomas, the band, his fans and those in the journalism industry, who obviously don’t believe in objectivity – the cornerstone of being a journalist – are acting like Matt and Ramona skinned someone’s puppy. Good God!

“Sorry, but Matt & Ramona were being MALICIOUS. They started this TIRADE. Rob Thomas is the only one who comes off looking RESPECTABLE.” – Sonny

Ummm…no, they weren’t. Seems like the people who don’t know M&R OR WLNK and have never heard The Matt & Ramona show are the ones who think poor widdle Rob and de band were being picked on. Yes, M&R did make comments, but they did not “blackmail” (which, btw, Rob Thomas CLEARLY does not know the def of blackmail…the appropriate word would have been BOYCOTT) MB20. They clearly stated that if MB20 didn’t think that they or their station was a priority, then MB20 & Rob Thomas and their music wouldn’t be a priority for the station. Funny that Rob and the band decided to stand up WLNK, since they were the biggest players of MB20 and Rob Thomas’ solo music since the beginning. The other station that they stood M&R up for seldom plays their music and Neil, the PD for WLNK was the most upset because he is (maybe was, now?) a MAJOR fan of Rob’s and the band (not nice to piss off the PD of a station that plays your music many, many, many times a day). Rob? Comes off respectable? PUH-LEEZE…Rob Thomas comes off as a whiny rock star with and ego the size of the Milky Way (the galaxy, not the candy bar).

“They accused him (or his management) of lying, said he obviously wasn’t sick since he made another scheduled appearance. The dude was sick and they acted like idiots and didn’t give him time to make it up to them or the assembled fans before they started bashing him and demanding an apology or else they would never play his music again. Sounds like blackmail to me.” – Ray

Ray, Ray, Ray….Blackmail, as defined by dictionary.com is:
1. any payment extorted by intimidation, as by threats of injurious revelations or accusations.
2. the extortion of such payment: He confessed rather than suffer the dishonor of blackmail.
3. a tribute formerly exacted in the north of England and in Scotland by freebooting chiefs for protection from pillage.
–verb (used with object)
4. to extort money from (a person) by the use of threats.
5. to force or coerce into a particular action, statement, etc.: The strikers claimed they were blackmailed into signing the new contract.

BOYCOTT is defined, by the same source, as:
1. to combine in abstaining from, or preventing dealings with, as a means of intimidation or coercion: to boycott a store.
2. to abstain from buying or using: to boycott foreign products.
–noun
3. the practice of boycotting.
4. an instance of boycotting.

M&R’s words were in jest – they ARE a comedy show, btw. Because Rob and the band canceled 10 min before they were to go on the air, M&R were most likely not prepared to fill the time. Plus, I can understand their disappointment. Here they are, having promoted that segment for a couple of weeks, they invited fans down and they seriously prepped. Plus, they not only had to explain to their listeners, but also the people that took time off of work to come and see the band in studio. Oh, and Matt totally had SERIOUS questions to ask the band, and Ramona, like, so totally, got dressed up for them. Oh, that’s sarcasm, in case you need it ’splained to you.
Also, I think the fact that at the very moment the band was supposed to be on M&R’s show – they were at another station, LIVE AND ON AIR. The band’s managment made the choice to tell M&R that Rob had “food poisioning” when it CLEARLY was a scheduling conflict. If the flunky who had called had just said “sorry, we’re short on time and we aren’t going to be able to make your show, but we will DEFINATELY make this up to you” M&R wouldn’t have said squat about MB20 or being stood up. They’ve been in the business for a LONG time and they would have understood. However, MB20’s management made the decision to go with an untruth, I’m not going to call it a lie – because I’m SURE Rob really did have food poisioning…(roll eyes). And M&R have NEVER said that THEY didn’t believe his management. M&R’s listeners who have called in about this subject have and we live in a country of free speech, so M&R’s listeners have the right to vent.

Rob & the band have been the ones who’ve completely blown this whole thing out of proportion and they continue to believe what some slightly disturbed fans have told them. They have never called the station, never talked to any of M&R’s bosses to find out WHAT actually was and wasn’t said. And even though they “offered,” – per RT’s letter on his myspace page – how are they going to know EXACTLY which fans were there, if they don’t bother to call the station to find out who they were? I mean, any Tom, Dick or Harry could go to them and say, “yeah, sure I was there,” when they weren’t and screw a fan that WAS at WLNK that day out of free tickets and free passes.

I have to admit, I was still an MB20 and Rob Thomas fan (as well as I still was a loyal Matt & Ramona fan) up until he decided to take this to the national level and smear Matt and Ramona. ROB is the one who is TRYING to force fans of both to draw a line in the sand. GET OVER YOURSELF, ROB!!!!!!!! And you have lost another fan. I wasn’t going to pick sides, but Rob, you and the rest of the band have made me and I’m sure others do exactly that.

Jen | 10/26/2007, 2:47 pm EST

I live in Charlotte and listen to M&R everyday. I was listening the day this happened and I swear people, unless you’ve heard the show, you would believe that what Matt said was “mean and vindictive”. Listen to what he said, not READ what he said…his tone was definately in jest and his personality is more the joker then anything. Matt and Ramona are good, honest and funny people who’s job it is to entertain listeners. I remember, when I heard that MB20 ditched, I too felt that it was a crock of sh*t because I’d heard them that morning on another program. If Rob Thomas was sick, so be it, but they attended other interviews throughout the day…why ditch this one? In the end, they (MB20) has acted very immature on this entire matter and I could care less what happens to their next album.

M&R Listener | 10/26/2007, 2:52 pm EST

This is in response to Rob Thomas’ open letter posted on MB20’s MySpace page.

Dear Matchbox 20’s Rob:

Your management should have been upfront with the “Matt and Ramona Show”. If you were sick then Paul should have made the appearance by himself. If both of you were behind schedule, management should not have blamed your illness and made another appearance during the time originally devoted to the “Matt and Ramona Show”.

At this point in time ALL parties involved should have a conference call. You may want to record it, play it on the air as well as posting it on all the appropriate web sites to clear the air.

Breaking it down:

“After years of…”: If you had a good relationship with the “Matt and Ramona Show” then your management should have valued the relationship, been upfront with M&R and stated that you were sick, YOU AND PAUL WERE SKIPPING the M&R appearance and visiting a more valuable group of fans at the non-radio event to squeeze the last bit of life out of you while they could. IMHO #1, M&R weren’t upset that you were sick. They were mad that your management skipped out on them blaming your illness yet both of you made an appearance during the time originally allotted to M&R. IMHO #2, Since your management blamed your illness for the scheduling change, why couldn’t Paul make the appearance? Oh, that’s right; Paul was with you visiting more valuable fans.

“Actually, I was…”: It’s very admirable that you were in the process of scheduling the flight to CLT in November. Why not continue to book it? M&R have read emails from a few of your fans, I’ve heard a select few impassioned fans call the show & they are far too emotional to get the story straight. You wrote of the “music business”. Why not confirm information on your fan site by going through the appropriate business channels and confirming the information prior to making a business decision? If you’re such a businessman then you should have acted as one.

“…ever publicly blackmailed…”: http://dictionary.reference.co m/browse/blackmail
–verb (used with object)
4.to extort money from (a person) by the use of threats.
5.to force or coerce into a particular action, statement, etc.: The strikers claimed they were blackmailed into signing the new contract.

If your management, acting on your behalf, skipped out on M&R and you made an appearance during the time allotted to M&R, why would they play your record? It sounds as if you stomped on the heart of M&R’s boss. Your management played with fire and you lost. M&R didn’t blackmail you. Your management wasn’t completely honest, didn’t live up to their end of the bargain and your record took the hit. Oh well, life goes on. Your management now knows to be completely truthful the next time you’re in a tight spot. ***I agree with the previous poster: it’s BOYCOTT not blackmail.***

“…to defend us.”: Ramona read ONE email from a MB20 fan named Michelle. Ramona asked if the M&R show needed to apologize to MB20 and M&R listeners overwhelmingly said no. The callers weren’t rude at all. I realize you can’t control your defenders but some of them are rabid and may need medication.

“We would like…”: Thank you for offering the 12 fans free tickets and passes to another show. This is very business-like of you.

“Threatened” takes me to threat so here’s that definition:
http://dictionary.reference.c om/browse/threat
1.a declaration of an intention or determination to inflict punishment, injury, etc., in retaliation for, or conditionally upon, some action or course; menace: He confessed under the threat of imprisonment.
2.an indication or warning of probable trouble: The threat of a storm was in the air.
3.a person or thing that threatens.
Inflict punishment? Who, Matt Harris? He can barely hurt a flea. There was no intention to inflict punishment or injury.

Regarding the Columbus Radio Station audio: If you’re so business-like and professional then why stoop to M&R’s level? You should have proved yourself better and not slammed them on the air in another radio market. Aren’t you angry with them after they “threatened [you] on the air?”

P.S. In the week or so before your scheduled appearance the M&R show spent time laughing over the fact that MB20 “thanked them”. They knew darn well your “liner Matt and Ramona” were your friends, not them.

You may want to consider new management.

Sincerely,

Listener-Who-Doe sn’t-Even-Give-a-
Darn-but-Get s-to-VENT-Unrelated-
Pent-Up-A nger

Greg | 10/26/2007, 3:46 pm EST

Matt & Ramona apologists are idiots. First, to demand an apology OR THEY WILL NO LONGER PLAY MATCHBOX 20 OR ROB THOMAS’s songs is certainly a lame attempt “TO FORCE OR COERCE INTO A PARTICULAR ACTION”, in other words, blackmail, as someone defined it below.

Second, neither Rob or Paul slammed Matt and Ramona during the interview at a Columbus radio station. They explained what had happened, why it happened and even said that even after Matt & Ramona were calling them names and liars that they were still planning on making up the missed appointment until they heard them denigrating the fans who were writing in. To paraphrase, they said they had pretty thick skins but insulting our fans is going too far.

Face it, Matt & Ramona have tried to boost the ratings for their lame radio show by starting this whole sorry business. IF they were truly concerned about the fans, they would have given the band a chance to make it up to both the fans and to Matt & Ramona’s over-inflated egos. Their misplaced sense of entitlement is absolutely mind-boggling.

Oh, and I can just see what would have happened if only Paul Doucette had shown up for the meet and greet. Come on, people, get real. It’s Thomas most people want to see, that’s just the facts.

M&R Listener | 10/26/2007, 4:09 pm EST

This whole situation is ridiculous!! If Rob Thomas is the “professional” he claims to be why doesn’t he get off his high horse & call Matt & Ramona himself?! I am really surprised that someone of his public stature would blindly believe rumor & not get his facts straight. He should have listened to the audio before posting his “open letter”. I have listened to Matt & Ramona for years & if you knew their show & their personalities you would understand their comments on being cancelled on by the band. Everyone needs to butt out & let M&R & Matchbox 20 have a discussion & work it our theirselves. Those of you that make threats or comments to M&R obviously aren’t avid listeners or know them. I think it’s very naive to attack M&R to defend people you don’t now or will ever know personally!!

Greg | 10/26/2007, 4:23 pm EST

OK, Matt. Now get back to work.

Jessica | 10/26/2007, 4:29 pm EST

Greg if matchbox 20 can’t handle a few jokes on the radio they should have hung up their microphones a long time ago
I know they are made fun of in the press all the time
Why deal out to one single station
Smells like publicity to me
They were booking on the show through their record label to promote their new record correct
It comes off like a crying baby
Even if he feels hes right writing something like this makes him come off like a person who cant hack it in the tough as nails rock and roll world

Laura | 10/26/2007, 4:30 pm EST

“Greg | 10/26/2007, 4:23 pm EST

OK, Matt. Now get back to work.”

Why Rob, I thought you were so busy, being an internation rock star?????

Jo | 10/26/2007, 4:35 pm EST

I spend the majority of the day in my car and I listen to WLNK everyday. I heard what went on the day MB20 cancelled. Matt is usually off the wall hilarious daily. Ramona is the calm in the storm. They are great together and have many fans. They have always played MB20 music and frankly I don’t care if they ever play their music again. Rob Thomas was very unprofessional the way he handled this. I think he’s lost a lot more fans than he’s gained.

Mary | 10/26/2007, 4:36 pm EST

This whole thing is completely out of hand. Anyone would have been offended and vented if they were in that situation. I know that if I was psyched up for two weeks about an upcoming event and my date called me up ten minutes before we were supposed to go and told me that it was cancelled, I would be disappointed. If I found out that he just told me that so he could go do something else instead, I would be PISSED! That is how Matt and Ramona felt.

Everyone keeps talking about how tongue in cheek Matt and Ramona are. The fact of the matter is, Matt may be tongue in cheek, but Ramona is just the nicest sweetest personality on radio. I feel so bad for her. She was so excited to talk to the guys (they spent a week talking about it leading up to the event), and I think her feelings really were incredibly hurt by the whole thing. No one wants to be slammed nationally by someone who can’t bother to get the facts straight first!

Rob:
PLEASE go back to the M&R archives and listen to the absoutely crazy rantings of the psychos that you were defending. I give you credit…I haven’t seen fan loyalty like this since Jerry Garcia died. Too bad all your fans that decided to call the show were total loons! It was so sad and yet hysterical at the same time! And just to set the record straight…it was not Matt and Ramona making fun of your fans, it was the M&R listeners. And, they totally had it coming…so so sad.

Rob | 10/26/2007, 5:03 pm EST

Ok,I was wrong.I’m sorry. Please forgive me. Matt & Ramona are the greatest! Please stop the hatemail.
Rob

Jessie | 10/26/2007, 5:04 pm EST

Give it up already, Matt and Ramona just want their minute of stardom, their big break.I don’t see that happening, I went to their website, I took a listen they ain’t even that funny. I would hate to be in my car listening to that garbage, I mean days and days of this? Aren’t their newsworthy things to get out there?

Kim | 10/26/2007, 5:08 pm EST

I know someone that works at that station and it is a set up
DONT FEED INTO IT

Grandma Tess | 10/26/2007, 5:25 pm EST

Don’t know the whole situtation but sounds like someone got sick and didn’t get to a phone in time to stop the confusion. Paul being Rob’s friend was probably waiting for a call and when he didn’t show up when over, got cot up in the confusion of the illness and forgot the interview and focused on his friend. That’s what friend’s do. Matt and Ramona were insulted as they should be, but I think they need to contact Rob and Paul directly before slandering their names all over the place. That’s RUDE and unprofessional. I think they should all sit down in a room and make this all better with a cup of tea and some cookies, and remind them both how it takes two to make a fight…

Otherwise it’s just an idot talking to make themselves feel better.

Tyler | 10/26/2007, 7:08 pm EST

Matt and Ramona HAVE tried to get Rob to call the show numerous times. The truth is, after two weeks today, he hasn’t.

Furthermore, the worst that they said as far as “insults”, was “Shmatchbox Shwenty” (To quote Matt).

They HAVE been trying to let the whole thing go. If you listened to the show, you’d know that. This is why the whole thing is still going on – because of people like the below poster spreading misinformation.

Rob could’ve handled the situation better.

- | 10/26/2007, 7:09 pm EST

“Rob Thomas should have taken a minute to get his facts straight before he flew off half-cocked with such a childish open letter. Aparrently his sources (nut-job MB20 fanatics) are about as reliable as the chef/cook who served him a heaping helping of food poisoning.”

John | 10/26/2007, 7:18 pm EST

Hey Tyler, THESE ARE EXACT QUOTES FROM MATT RIGHT AFTER THE CANCELLATION. SO GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT!!!

-oscar- | 10/26/2007, 7:28 pm EST

This is possible only in America. You argue over total BS. Who cares who’s right and who’s wrong?

I think that the first paragraph puts it right: “we doubt the incident really warranted two open letters”. Both of the sides are guilty of making such a mess over nonsence.

Good luck to M&R and MBT.

PD | 10/26/2007, 10:23 pm EST

Rob has made no further comments about this; wouldn’t it be nice if everyone at the station did the same and let his management make it up to the fans that were left in the lurch?

If any of the pro-M & R posters had any inkling of how this music promotion business works, they would know that the schedule is determined far in advance and many, many other details factor into every waking moment. It sounds like Rob & Co. did the best they could with an impossible situation. I can say without any hestitation that this band has been one of the most respectful, conscientious, and sincere bands we have ever worked with. Let it go.

Jamie | 10/26/2007, 10:31 pm EST

Rob
“Let it go, let it roll right off your shoulder” – so introspective. Only if you could let this go and look beyond the knee jerk reactions of Matt and Ramona, If you would, you would find at the core of those reactions two beautiful, caring, intelligent and fun individuals. You would come to
the realization that their obvious disappointment was based solely on their respect of you as an artist as well as a person not to mention their anticipation of speaking with you and sharing the same with their audience. I have the privilege of sharing 4 hours of an otherwise mundane work day with Matt and Ramona and in all good conscience,I am confident in “saying” that two enormous hearts brimming with compassion belie their exuberant, comedic personalities that NEVER fail to make me laugh and smile, no matter how difficult the day. They so obviously care about you Rob and your band and there is not a doubt that Matt and Ramona highly revere your perspective, as well as admire your craft. The emotion in their response to the situation at hand proves just that. I personally would like to thank you, Rob for blessing us all with your the talent and wisdom so evident in your lyrics, which have touched my heart and soul in so many ways. So, respectfully, I would offer that you heed your own eloquent advice..”Let it go, let it roll right off your shoulder.”

In HIS name
Jamie

Mary | 10/26/2007, 11:04 pm EST

PD…you are an idiot. Exactly what part of the music industry are you so wrapped up in and when have you “worked” with MB20. If you knew anything about the music industry you would know that Rob and Paul don’t “make” anything out of a situation. they go where there management tells them. it was the management that f’ed up. it was management that lied. it was management that over booked the band. no one ever blamed the band for any of it. it was rob who f,ed up when he started bad mouthing m&r without getting all the facts straight first you moron!

Jen1 | 10/26/2007, 11:07 pm EST

Grandma Tess…do you have any idea what is going on here? Your comments were hysterical and unbelievably off! Please fill yourself in on the whole story before posting!

Macy | 10/26/2007, 11:15 pm EST

John…is there possibly a little man crush on Rob going on here? Tone down the screaming please! If you listen to the podcast, you would hear that Matt’s tone of voice was not nearly as bad as your little cyber-rant. THE ARE COMEDIANS!

Emily | 10/26/2007, 11:56 pm EST

I am a long time listener of Matt and Ramona and a fan of Matchbox Twenty as well. I believe this whole situation ahs gone way overboard. Matt and Ramona are payed to be funny and were taken way too serious. I do believe that Matchbox twenty was in the wrong for being one place when they should havebeen in another and professing to have food poisoning…just doesn’t add up.

Lividity | 10/27/2007, 1:11 am EST

So are you still going to play Matchbox20 during your air time or not? I think that was the part that made most of the fans upset,
It just seems like you guys did not even give them the chance to try to make it up to your show and your listeners that had won meet and greets. It had just happened when you said you wouldnt play their music anymore, with out letting them get dates and times to make it up to the listeners, and if anyone went off half cocked it was Matt when he ranted about Matchbox20 and Rob and called them names. Quote
“You’ll never hear matchbox twenty again. The food poisoning is crap. I don’t love the new cd any more. They bailed because they felt like it. It’s bullcrap. They are banned from the show. Bag all their music. Sons of bitches. Bitchbox. Scumbox twenty”
Don’t know but if I was forced to choose between M&R show or MB20
YOU LOOSE

PD | 10/27/2007, 1:16 am EST

I am amazed at the terrible grammar, misspellings and punctuation errors I am reading in the responses of the WLNK supporters. I guess that explains their actions in regards to their demographic appeal.

Mary, what the heck do you think a PD does? Maybe all of you should not write about things you know nothing about and let this get sorted out by people who understand how this all works.

Grandma Tess | 10/27/2007, 1:58 am EST

Time to sit and drinks some tea and eat some cookies… Well grandma threats with a wooden spoon for you all to make up….

(Or was that my Grandma?)

Chinaski | 10/27/2007, 4:05 am EST

Add Rob Thomas to the burning humorless shit pile. These ever growing group of hypersensitives ruin it for the rest of the world who can take a fuckin’ joke!!!

John | 10/27/2007, 11:43 am EST

Macy, I had to yell to be heard over the morons insisting Matt didn’t say anything terrible. They were obviously in denial after the first time I posted the quotes. Maybe I should have drawn pictures so they could understand. Matt’s rant was much worse, and not said in a joking manner. Just a childish manner.

Oh, my full name is Johnnie. I’m all female. You judgmental person.

Rob | 10/27/2007, 3:20 pm EST

Rob Thomas was so wrong to diis Matt and Romana and the 12 fans waiting on their slack asses.I’ll never believe he was sick.He just wanted to go to a bigger station that plays their kind of crappy music. The Matt & Ramona show is mainly talk radio, so now we’ve got something to talk about.
Scumbox Twenty: please don’t bother coming back to Charlotte, we don’t want you.

Melissa | 10/27/2007, 7:10 pm EST

Gosh! Can’t anyone these days take a joke? I firmly believe that this whole incident was blown out of proportion. I am no one’s side, because quite frankly, I love Matt and Ramona, and on Rob’s side.

All of this argueing should just stop……..besides it’s not like we’re all elementary kids, we’re all ADULTS for crying out loud!

Adios Goodbye | 10/27/2007, 8:00 pm EST

Who are Matt and Ramona? Never heard of them.

Jessica | 10/28/2007, 10:03 am EST

I bet a lot of people have never heard of them. Even more reason why Rob looks like a baby for picking a fight with them about them not liking his band or fans after being stood up. If someone stood Rob up and did other things instead I’m sure he would be crying about it. He sure likes to be seen in a sympathetic light all the time. Oh the press makes fun of us boo hoo.
Maybe if you didn’t whine about it all the time like another Kanye West people would stop rt.

Rob The Whiner | 10/28/2007, 7:38 pm EST

Matchbox20 ain’t even a real band. They steal music from real groups and sell it as their own.Robby Thomas is a loser who should never had a chance to be in the public spotlight. He was so wrong to fly off and beat up on Matt & Ramana. He has to act big to make up for his little-bitty pp.
Get your facts correct.Rob’s new tattoo…
a big “L” on his forehead.

Sheila | 10/29/2007, 3:07 pm EST

GO MATT & RAMONA!!!! Love you guys and your show, I’ve been a loyal listener for a long time. Way to go with your open letter, I guess some people (initials RT) have NO SENSE OF HUMOR, quite obviously!! I am behind you guys 110% and enjoy the constant laughter your show provides. My day wouldn’t be complete without the funny you bring to us listener’s boring, everyday lives!! Keep it up and don’t back down, because in the long run, your loyal listeners (and probably ALOT more NEW listeners after this) will be behind you ALL THE WAY!!
GO MATT & RAMONA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!! (and Bandy & Doc too!!)

Who really cares? | 10/29/2007, 3:13 pm EST

I can’t believe all of this hype is still in the forefront of people’s minds. It’s done, over with, in the past. MB20 concede to the fact that your response was over the top. Make it right for the people that were actually put out by this ordeal. The people that took time out of their daily schedule to meet and greet with you folks – got stood up (for whatever reason), should get a little something for their time – send them a CD or a gift certificate to a music store. As for Matt and Ramona – they do their job, they are radio personalities, they talk, and they entertain. I fear if this continues we (being the listeners of 107.9 the link) are going to get a little tired of listening to this ordeal over and over again. Before anyone posts comments on this ordeal, they really need to subscribe to the RSS feed/ pod cast and actually listen to the broadcast in question, then go read both Open letters before they go mouthing off. We’ve heard enough already!

S | 10/29/2007, 4:27 pm EST

“Hey Tyler, THESE ARE EXACT QUOTES FROM MATT RIGHT AFTER THE CANCELLATION. SO GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT!!!

And if you have ever listened to the show, you’d know that it was a joke. Matt Harris is even called “Mr. Inappropriate” on the GD show. Plus, Rob Thomas has earned the “Bitchbox20″ name. He’s the whiny, sad, pathetic loser who won’t let this go. Now he’s gone to Entertainment Weekly to CONTINUE bitching about this and saying “it’s not fair that the Matt & Ramona show was honest with their listeners – we do this stuff all the time (meaning they cancel without any given notice) and it’s handled privately.” As Matt said this afternoon – after two weeks of saying nothing but nice things about Rob-freakin loser-Thomas – “he’s a tool.”

“I am amazed at the terrible grammar, misspellings and punctuation errors I am reading in the responses of the WLNK supporters. I guess that explains their actions in regards to their demographic appeal.” – PD

Oh, I’m sorry, PD. I did not realize that we were writing college thesis’. Oh, btw, how ’bout comments on MB20 supporters. Better yet, Rob Thomas’ ranting missive itself? It’s quite full of errors (referring to grammer and punctuation – I even believe there is a spelling error). Of course what else can you expect from a high school drop out.

I have a feeling – since RT cannot seem to let this go – that most of you who support him will be humiliated when he pulls yet another stunt like this and screws YOU over (ie canceling a concert, album signing, et al). Oh, well – you’re just sheep and sheep always end up in the slaughterhouse.

you wish... | 10/29/2007, 5:04 pm EST

RollingStone….Why have you posted M& R’s open letter in it’s entirety but not Rt’s?Makes you look biased. What’s up with your ‘off topic subjects will be removed’,when clearly there are some of topic comments here?Come on,we all know media sucks & has favorites but damn it RS!I expected better from you!How many times have you featured Rt/MB20 on your cover?NOW you’re back peddling on that, too? And where do you get your pics from? You post a flattering one of M& R but a rather unflattering one of Rt?I’m sure there are way too mny better ones than the one you chose.I think too that in HIS open letter siggy he included MB20,so what gives with these looking so biased pics & articles?Did Rob piss in one of your offices or injure the ego of one of your employees too?
;-)

Chelle | 10/29/2007, 6:36 pm EST

you wish… YOU said………

RollingStone… ….And where do you get your pics from? You post a flattering one of M& R but a rather unflattering one of Rt?

A: Thats the real Rob Thomas.

Lori | 10/29/2007, 6:44 pm EST

I listen to M&R and love them. They totally have my support. Whatever happen to their freedom of speach? They just gave their opinions on the day that this all happened and have continued to do so. Rob is just whining cause he knows he dissed them & is trying to not be made out to be the slacker that he really is. As far as his blackmail comment, well that’s what makes up the music business. His (RT) mistake in all this was not keeping his mouth shut and letting it blow over. He has now made M&R two of the most popular radio DJ’s there is. Go with it M&R, you deserve it and you owe it all to RT. Guess his cancelling on you that day was the best thing after all.

Jim-In Charlotte | 10/29/2007, 7:04 pm EST

MB20 Blows- for chicks and wanna be chicks oogling a LOSER. M&R RULE!!

me like REAL music. | 10/31/2007, 1:17 pm EST

matchbox 20 sucks, and whiners at that. This Matt and Ramona are in the right on this one. Pretty boy just can’t handle the truth, and wants to create his own. Sad. Grow a set of balls Thomas!

Fan of the band and the show | 10/31/2007, 6:30 pm EST

Let me just say that it took me some time to warm up to the Matt and Ramona show. I probably listened for 10 minutes at a time because Matt drove me insane with his immature humor. But now I can’t get enough of the show. It is pretty obvious that the support for both the band and the Matt and Ramona show has come from loyal fans. And the truth is, only the loyalist of fans can provide the most informed opinion about the whole situation. If you listen to the show regularly…you would know Matt is the friend you like to consider and “aquired taste” while Ramona is more level headed, but speaks her mind. Yes they were disappointed that RT didn’t show, yes Matt can be perceived as irrational and juvenile, but all party’s involved are genuin. I agree….call it a truce!

Nicole | 10/31/2007, 7:39 pm EST

Sucks that M&R are getting dragged through the mud, but hopefully they’ll gain more listeners because of the attention. I miss the angry Rob, not this pathetic, whining creature. I used to be a huge fan, but M20’s new CD blows–only 6 new songs, and they sound like something you’d hear at the dentist.

franklin | 2/23/2008, 12:51 am EST

wlnk is a talk station. they play maybe a song an hour to transition to a new topic or shift. so ah . . . they are not a top 40 station or rock station that would even be in a position to “blackmail” anyone with threats of not playing their music.
