Open-Letter Mailbag: Matchbox Twenty’s Rob Thomas Responds To Radio “Blackmail”

10/25/07, 12:38 pm EST

As any artist should know by now, if you’re going to write an open letter, we’re going to read it and discuss. Today, we examine the five-paragraph retaliation note Matchbox Twenty’s Rob Thomas directed at Charlotte, North Carolina disc jockeys Matt & Ramona. While promoting their new greatest-hits album in the north-er Carolina, Thomas came down with food poisoning. The band was able to complete their first promotional obligation, but Thomas’ sickness and time constraints forced the band to cancel their appearance on the popular rock jocks’ radio show. Matt & Ramona responded over the airwaves by saying, according to Thomas, they “weren’t going to play our music until we apologize in person to you.” Thomas did not take kindly to the “blackmail,” nor the fact that the DJs “chose to read and make fun of letters that fans sent you.” Thomas closes out the letter with “We thank you for the years of support and are sorry it has to come to an end, but there is no way we will ever apologize after being threatened on the air.” Pwned by Rob Thomas!

We listened to the clips from that show and heard the DJs claim that though Matchbox Twenty canceled on them, the band was allegedly across town making good on another promotional appearance. Then, like the drive-time talk-hosts they are, Matt & Ramona filled the air-time with jokes at Thomas’ expense (while he is by all accounts an incredibly nice guy, perhaps such jabs are the media’s way of getting even with him for making everyone hear Santana’s “Smooth” a million times). One thing we learned, though, is that the gender divide between Matchbox Twenty fans is off the charts. Of the 236 comments left following Thomas’ MySpace post at press time, only three of them came from men — and one of those men was a fake Rob Thomas.

This happened in 2007…

Madelyn | 6/24/2009, 7:40 pm EST

M&R let go of this a long time ago; why is Rob Thomas still harping on it? Because he has fallen off the face of the earth as far as new, popular music is concerned, aaaaaaaaand he’s getting old, just like his music. Aw. Sad. =(

M&R know that all their Charlotte (and other affiliate stations) fans are laughing at Rob Thomas with them.

Megan | 6/24/2009, 5:03 pm EST

@ lol - a small town like Charlotte? Ummm, no Charlotte is the biggest city in NC.

As far as the MB20/M&R feud, it may be about publicity to a point but M&R rock and I will be a continued listener of their “small town” radio show!

Cristy | 6/24/2009, 3:34 pm EST

Rob Thomas can SUCK it! He is a total tool. Get over it buddy. You’re a total douche for committing to something you obviously couldn’t commit to. Shut up and stop your whining already.

cali | 2/3/2008, 9:05 pm EST

i thinkrob thomas isan absolute jerk for doing that. I took off work o go watch matchbox 20 during my lunch hour…w/ehes a giant douchebag

Suck it Charlotte | 11/1/2007, 4:34 pm EST

Rob Thomas is awesome…i just met him in LA on the 26th and he is a great guy. I’d make up an excuse not to be on that radio station too.

mg | 11/1/2007, 1:14 pm EST

If Rob Thomas truly had food poisoning he would have had to cancel all of his appointments that day and he would not have been able to ride in a car to be “stuck in traffic” as he claimed. Anyone who has had food poisoning would know that.

M and R Fan CLT | 11/1/2007, 12:20 am EST

I enjoy both Rob Thomas/Matchbox 20 AND Matt and Ramona! It’s funny to see how out of touch with reality these celebrities like Rob Thomas have become. You’d think he’d know a little about an established radio program like Matt and Ramona show, and how their show goes. They have been on the air here in charlotte for how many years now? Rob Thomas brings to mind another local “baby”– Bruton Smith– are the two related? Neither can seem to get their own way and then cry and pout when they don’t.

M&R Fan | 10/30/2007, 1:34 pm EST

I don’t know much about the music business, but it doesn’t seem right to call in sick to one radio station and be appearing on another show at that very same time. How does that look? Sure doesn’t look sick to me. Just bad management and business. If Rob was indeed sick, his managers should have shared the situation with M&R. All M&R knew at the time was that MB20 was sick, but not too sick to perform for another station at the very time they had called in sick to M&R.

In addition, MB20 fans who have called M&R on this topic sound insane and like idiots.

I will continue to listen to M&R and hope to never hear another MB20 song or interview with RT!

Chelle | 10/29/2007, 7:17 pm EST

Hey Rob……….
You lose.

Jim-In Charlotte | 10/29/2007, 6:58 pm EST

Whay does anyone give a Damn about Matchbox 20? Matt and Ramona RULE!

Catherine | 10/29/2007, 5:30 pm EST

I have to agree with some other listeners that I too am not a huge matchbox 20 fan but do listen to their music. However, to diss Matt and Ramona the way they did was just wrong…..they are way better than Rob Thomas is anyways…..Honestly, on the air, they were just telling like it is, tell the truth and how they feel about how he basically said “you don’t matter”. I think MB20 is full of crap

Simone | 10/28/2007, 11:23 pm EST

I think this thing is stupid. Matt and Ramona are so much fun. Whatever band (insert loser band here) that really doesn’t matter and they really did NOT CARE just a good bit about Jimmy Carter. It was really funny you all should listen to it.

Charlotte | 10/28/2007, 7:29 pm EST

Dear Mr. Thomas,
Please don’t bother making any plans to visit Charlotte,NC anytime in the near future. We don’t want you.You are a big letdown and a dissapoint to everyone. When you can act grown-up,we’ll talk.
Your new tattoo should be a great big “L” on your forehead.
PeeWee Herman has more class than you.
Charlotte

Rob The Whiner | 10/28/2007, 7:17 pm EST

Matchbox20 ain’t even a real band. They steal music from real groups and sell it as their own.Robby Thomas is a loser who should never had a chance to be in the public spotlight. He was so wrong to fly off and beat up on Matt & Ramana.Get your facts correct.Rob’s new tattoo…
a big “L” on his forehead.

Matt and Ramona | 10/28/2007, 12:44 pm EST

Matt and Ramona suck donkey testicles. :P

lol | 10/28/2007, 12:40 pm EST

Boo fucking hoo! Matt and Ramona are just about the worst radio show in existence. Who gives two shits about these losers on some small market station in Charlotte (of all places). And all those ragging on how much they hate Matchbox Twenty’s music … why the fuck are you reading an article about them in the first place? That’s the most stupidest thing ever! Go back to your mother’s basement and die already. No one gives a fuck about your opinion.

chinaski | 10/28/2007, 7:01 am EST

i’ll bet this is a picture that he wishes he could have back.

I used to love collecting Matchbox cars when I was a kid.

Thanks for ruining a perfectly good word like Matchbox.

When I hear their music, I want to commit violent acts against society.

If someone gets murdered, I’m going to set a precedent with the Matchbox 20 defense.

Rob, I hope you get mauled by a wild boar, you whiny pop music fuck.

And . . . wasn’t that song he did with Carlos Santana the most annoying piece of shit you ever heard in your life???

lulu | 10/27/2007, 6:27 pm EST

I think that if any good comes from this it has just made me an even more loyal fan of Matt and Ramona….go away RT and MB20…

you wish... | 10/27/2007, 5:35 pm EST

Ok,I’ve listened to the podcast, read the open letters & even checked the links people have posted here.Guess what?I’m a RT/MB20 long time fan & in the pics from KIss station he DOES indeed look sicker than hell.Even the smiling ones.I guess you’d have to be familiar with ‘the many faces of Rob Thomas’ to know this, but yes,he looks ill.In many it’s clear he’s lookin at possibly a clock,or a person, almost with that ‘are we done yet’ look.I never heard of this station or the hosts until I read the ‘open letter’,but I did make sure I gave them the benefit of doubt until I’d heard both sides, lol,or in this case, way too many opinions.Bottom line, this hoopla has given the station extreme exposure & unless that was Rt’s intent,it seems his ‘open letter’ has indeed backfired.I say this as a loyal fan of his.Perhaps it’s best to have all parties remove their own letters, podcasts, etc & as the saying goes,’let sleeping dogs lie’.I DO believe RT was sick,I do feel that the radio hosts were somewhat out of line, even if that is their format, they should realize that there are thousands of RT/MB20 fans who would be tuning in ONLY because they expected to hear from the band. The personal attacks by everyone,be it RT,radio hosts,or fans of either side are just way beyond comprehension at this point. It IS turning into one Hell of a publicity stunt, whether intentional or not.I use the term ’stunt’ because it is now so far out of the norm. of simple ‘publicity’.

Kim | 10/26/2007, 5:32 pm EST

I know someone that works at that radio station ..this is a set-up
DONT FEED INTO IT

blackmoon | 10/26/2007, 2:44 pm EST

I was so disappointed in the rob&MB20 no show with matt and ramona. I love to listen to matt and ramona and their topics no matter how they may sound to some people. I am not a big MB20 fan but i do listen to some of the music. Whether or not any one is a fan the whole NO SHOW was disrespectful to Matt and Ramona and the listeners. Face it there was no “blackmail” someone just stood up and said some thing about what was done and Rob did not like it. Be a man…Apoligize not just to Matt and Ramona but the listeners also.

Monica | 10/26/2007, 8:36 am EST

Rob and MB20 would not survive working a real job 9to5…

If they cannot find another better excused to a no-show appearance, don’t go on tour!!!

You need to realize that he is taking on the mantra that: Any Publicity is publicity, no matter GOOD or BAD…
If he wants to be a crying baby, he should go back home and cry on his mama’s lap!!!!
Stop taking shots on the press and find yourself a better quality for the new Album !!

Spanky | 10/26/2007, 12:24 am EST

Dear Rob,

If you want publicity you should do it the right way and show your Wa Wa to the Paparazzi! The reality here is simple, son, if you don’t plan on showing up for work you need to at least call in sick. A ‘no call-no show’ will get you FIRED! I believe that rising stars should be forced to take a ‘reality class’ before they are allowed to become famous. This would save yourselves alot of embarrassment AND in turn keep good, hard working people like Matt and Ramona from having their valuable time WASTED!

MJG | 10/25/2007, 11:10 pm EST

I listen to Matt and Ramona and I enjoy them. I am also a Matchbox 20 fan,but have lost all respect for them.I find it hard to listen to a Matchbox 20 song now without thinking about how childish they are acting about this.

Julia | 10/25/2007, 9:12 pm EST

That is pathetic. It might work if he was in 6th grade posting a blog appologizing to a girl, but he is a grown man, and that is not business like behavior.
Is myspace the new way to conduct business? his letter was inconsistant and I can’t tell if he is using the excuse of being stuck in traffic or vommiting as to why he was a no show, and left all the winners high and dry.

But all of his 40year old fans have been quick to attack the radio station, going as far as writing a letter to their advertisers.
A lot of the fans standing up for them seem a little wack-o! Was Rob serving kool aid at his concerts?

Not a very good way to start a reunion!
Hope they get dropped from their label!

Give me a break! To see how sick Rob Thomas REALLY was…click on or go to this link http://www.acetj.com/scrapbook /MatchboxTwenty/mb20index.htm

This has pictures of mb20’s radio appearance with the competing radio station in Charlotte and sorry to say…Rob Thomas looks mighty healthy?…

Stephanie | 10/25/2007, 7:34 pm EST

This is what happens when you get your news from MySpace. Hopefully Rob Thomas has learned his lesson and will do a little research before he believes what Vicky said Michelle said Sam said Matt and Ramona said.

Brian | 10/25/2007, 7:09 pm EST

It seems to me a little white lie from MB20s’ handlers caused this to turn into a Jerry Springer episode of words. As a long time fan of MB20 I am hoping they will make this right for the DJ’s and their fans.

Scott H - Charlotte | 10/25/2007, 7:03 pm EST

I am surprised that Rolling Stone would publish something like this without really investigating the facts. This is just pure public relations propaganda. I was listening to the show when this all went down and it is clear that Rob Thomas stood up some of his fans and now is using his star status to make himself look like a victim. He should apologize to the fans that he stood up. MB20 has lost a fan and I will not buy anymore of there music.

If he was sick why was he performing at another Station in Charlotte?

What’s next Rob? hold a puppy and cry on entertainment tonight?

Rolling Stone is kissing ass by even writing this trash!!!!

l.w. | 10/25/2007, 6:33 pm EST

PLEASEEEE!! Anyone who actuslly has ever listened to Matt for 5 mins. knows what a jokester he is, he is like a big kid! This is so insane, Rob and MB20 are more examples of stars with their panties in a wad!! MATT AND RAMONA ROCK!!!

Tracy | 10/25/2007, 6:05 pm EST

It saddens me that it has evolved into this huge mess. Mr. Thomas and his followers have distorted this entire situation into a much larger fiasco that it really is. Matt and Ramona did no more than what they were supposed to do…..COMEDY. Get a little thicker skin Mr. Thomas. Ask your fans to grow up and act like they have some kind of sense.

Rae | 10/25/2007, 5:21 pm EST

Rob Thomas is a liar! I listened to the whole thing from the beginning. There was no blackmail nor threats. Rob Thomas owes Matt & Ramona an apology for sure. The radio station should sue him for slander!

Mack | 10/25/2007, 4:58 pm EST

The entire music business, or entertainment business is a big game of “blackmail”. Radio stations play music to get interviews. Bands do interviews to get their songs played. record labels smooze agents to sign the band. Its all a big game. Matt and Ramona had every right to say they were going to pull the songs, or actually pull the songs, if they wanted. MB20 didn’t uphold their end of the deal. Its not blackmail its business. And all Matt and Ramona, or their bosses, ask is that it be made up to the fans that had showed up expecting MB20. They were MB20 fans foremost, so you hurt your own fans. How about instead of spending the time to write a 5 page letter, own up to your mistake (or mismanagement by your team) and make it up to the fans. Thats all Matt and Ramona are asking for.

Lisa | 10/25/2007, 4:49 pm EST

Rob-If I were you’d I’d be embarrassed to show my face in public. Seriously-get a sense of humor-and a life while you’re at it!

Kathryn | 10/25/2007, 4:45 pm EST

Are there not more important things that Rob Thomas could be doing instead of saying something about a radio show. It seems that more people are for the radio show then for Rob Thomas. Boy you might not have anyone left in NC. Rob try helping the victims of the CA fires. How about helping the poor or homeless in this Country not another country. Try using your time for good and not basing a radio show. You are keeping the pot stirred. You did not show up and your people are not very well at time management and you were late, It takes a big person to say I am sorry we (our entire staff yours Rob)messed up. It would be allot better and you would be viewed as sincer, but I guess you are not. No more fans

Lets use some class Steve. Rob Thomas is wrong because he was on Charlotte, NC Ace & TJ show and did the superstar series and does not look sick. Look up the time it takes for food poising to start. Rob was late and no one planned well on his team, and he should apolgize to Matt & Ramona. Blackmail, OMG, get a life, no one black mailed you. Rob you say you are all about your fans. Well you let them down. Jon Bon Jovi had pneuoma and still play 20,000 fans and was great at it, because he knows who makes his check. He did an interview with a radio station and he was wonderful, because it was about the fans. You are not about the fans. I hope you never have another record sale.

Sheila | 10/25/2007, 4:36 pm EST

Oh - PLEASE!!! There are many more IMPORTANT issues in the world than this!!

Blackmail (defined in Webster’s states:) the action, treated as a CRIMINAL offense, of DEMANDING MONEY from a person in return for not revealing compromising or INJURIOUS INFORMATION about that person.

There is no MONEY involved here! There was no INJURIOUS INFORMATION here either! I’ve listened to Matt & Ramona everyday for five years, and all they try to do is bring laughter to us, the listeners.

Oh, just GROW UP and get your priorites STRAIGHT!!!!!!!!! Be more concerned with the future of our country and what is going on in the news.

Not only has this whole thing been a petty little tirade on the part of MB20, but how shameful that Matt and Ramona are now being trashed on a national level. Hopefully this will just get more exposure for Matt and Ramona and illuminate MB20 fans of just what a stereo typical narcisistic rock star Rob Thomas really is.

Rob Thomas | 10/25/2007, 4:09 pm EST

Whateva…I do what I want!!

Raul | 10/25/2007, 3:54 pm EST

I heard the comments from the show, and Matt & Ramona did not say anything offensive. One more thing…. Irt takes a lot of Ramona to get mad!!! It is actually kind of funny

se hall | 10/25/2007, 3:44 pm EST

Honestly, no one is acting professionally here, but I can’t beleive Rob Thomas, someone with an international music career, is so offended and his ego so bruised by local radio hosts, that he can’t drop this stupid issue and see the situation for what it is - immature and stupid. Please! He is the least professional of all the parties involved. All he does is post an open letter on his MySpace page, instead of dealing privately with Matt and Ramona and their superiors, for something so seemingly offensive to him? Matt and Ramona do what they do, talk show comedy. Things were said by them that were not threats, and could not possibly be taken as threats by anyone who listened to them those days. Maybe they should have reeled it in, but there is no way they can ban his music from their radio conglomeration because it is not up to them. Think about it! Obviously he does not listen to their radio show. Their comments were not offensive, just a way to laugh at a very disappointing situation. They WERE fans, by the way. Don’t you realize this is all just publicity for Rob Thomas and MB20? Who called who, Rolling Stone? I have lost all respect for him, his handlers, and his body of work. I cannot support someone who feels threatened by people being funny.

Laura | 10/25/2007, 3:43 pm EST

This seems to have been blown way out of proportion. I do listen to the station that Matt&Ramona are on, and have heard each day of this saga. It started because Mr Thomas cancelled 15-20 minutes before their appearance, saying he had food poisioning. They were at a radio station appearance and then left there and went to a public appearance where they did sing. The radio station had a dozen or so fans onsite that had won contests to meet MB20 and when the appearance was cancelled there were no offers of rearranging the appearance or making up for the fans. As Matt & Ramona are announcers/DJ’s (they mostly talk and play very little music, a great deal of that music was MB20) they were dumped and they talked about it on the air. It also appears that a few MB20 fans that admittedly, didn’t hear the broadcast told MB20 a lot of stuff that had not actually happened. According to the station info, no calls have came from MB20, only the “open letter” on their site. Not working in the industry I can’t say for sure but I wouldn’t think that is how professional business is handled. It would seem, even in the private community if your cancelling a meeting a few minutes before it starts you should rearrange it then or at least say I can’t attend but will call you tomorrow to set something else back up. Is it possible that this is being used to drum up publicity for MB20? It shouldn’t be at the expense of the reputations of a station and dj/announcers.

Me | 10/25/2007, 3:21 pm EST

Oh please, Rob Thomas needs to contact the Matt & Ramona show and get all the facts before coming out with a letter. I understand he is a “celebrity” and may not have alot of time, but he had time to write the letter. Why not get all the facts before writting the letter? This has gotten way too big for what it really is. IMHO

Samantha | 10/25/2007, 3:17 pm EST

From a person who lives and listens in Charlotte, NC, it is yet obvious that neither Rob Thomas, Matchbox Twenty, or the rude and threatening fans even listened to the show or shows in question. If so, they would realize that MB20 disrespected some of their own fans and as a former fan, I have now lost all respect for him and them.

Rosemary | 10/25/2007, 3:15 pm EST

I think the whole thing is insane. I listen everyday to Matt and Ramona. They have never blackmailed Matchbox twenty. They haven’t bad mouthed their fans.

Steve | 10/25/2007, 2:16 pm EST

Rob Thomas should write an open letter to everyone apologizing for making us suffer through his awful fucking music.

Seriously…every single song is G-D-C…that might’ve worked for the Ramnoes, but…ugh. Just go away already, dude, and spare us your nasally whining.
