“Oh By The Way”: Pink Floyd Celebrate Belated 40th Anniversary With Mega Box Set

10/25/07, 1:11 pm EST

If you thought Pink Floyd had exhausted all their fortieth anniversary surprises after they unleashed their three-disc The Piper at the Gates of Dawn reissue, think again. The band is releasing the massive Oh By The Way, which culls together all of the band’s proper studio albums into one box set. Technically, the band formed around 1965, making them forty-two, but this belated birthday present makes up for the oversight. Each compact disc is repackaged in mini-vinyl reproductions, complete with all the posters and postcards and dust jackets that accompanied the original records, except tiny-sized. They even brought back the original, iconic Dark Side of the Moon album cover for the first time since 1993, which is enough to warrant purchase. While the set includes every studio album from Piper to 1994’s The Division Bell, it curiously lacks the must-have rarities collection Relics. Storm Thorgersen, who is responsible for the majority of PF’s most well known artwork, was even employed to design the new cover. There are additional rumors that there might be an accompanying DVD featuring interviews and live performances. The set is out December 4th, giving people adequate time to wrap this behemoth in time for the holidays.

Look for a new book on Floyds live concert experience out in 2008

Playas by the Bayas | 10/26/2007, 9:57 am EST

Can someone clarify what this means: “They even brought back the original, iconic Dark Side of the Moon album cover for the first time since 1993″

Every Dark Side cd I see has the same cover…

floydfan18 | 10/26/2007, 2:34 pm EST

no the 20th and 30th verisons are a little diffrent they are diffrent colors and the prism is a little diffrent

Should have.... | 10/26/2007, 3:59 pm EST

They should have included a Relics/ early singles/ rarities cd.

I already have all the Floyd studio album stuff I want.

They should also put out a BBC sessions cd.

fatherbloopy | 10/26/2007, 7:43 pm EST

I don’t know…this seems boring. Even the Piper box set was a little boring. Too much hype? But then I like the obscurer stuff =) It would have been great if they included the solo Pink Floyd records…from Syd Barrett & Dave Gilmour’s records to Nick Mason’s Ficitcious Sports!! That album is fantastic.

Asshole Rose | 10/26/2007, 8:32 pm EST

Do “Momentary Lapse” and “Division Bell” even qualify as Pink Floyd albums? They friggin suck! Give me “Relics” any damn day of the week….

Zebediah Z. Topp | 10/26/2007, 9:12 pm EST

I’ve been listening to Pink Floyd for years and I think he’s great

Sean | 10/26/2007, 9:25 pm EST

I’m glad for the opportunity to get this package BUT I wish that they’d have also offered SACD versions of some of the other albums, as they did with Dark Side. According to Billboard’s story on this set, only 10,000 of these will be produced for sale (at least at first). The pre-order price is approximately $257.00 at Amazon. Sort of worries me that at that number of boxes the expected revenue didn’t justify a big effort at remastering, and we’ll be buying an expanded rehash of Shine On from 15 years ago. I hope my worry is unfounded.

Bob | 10/27/2007, 1:56 pm EST

A reunion tour would have given the fans what they REALLY want…

Pink Floyd... | 10/27/2007, 2:58 pm EST

Gee I wish I had the money to afford this. Sean, is it seriously $257.00!? I can understand how it would be that much, just look at all the discs in the picture, it’s just that I won’t be able to afford it any time soon. But I have a lot of Pink Floyd songs already, so I guess it’s okay. No, I’m wrong, it’s not okay. Cause I want this!

chinaski | 10/28/2007, 3:22 am EST

how about a new album with ALL the members and a full on tour, guys, before you’re all on your death beds wishing you had!

someone who cares | 10/28/2007, 9:12 pm EST

to a mr “Zebediah Z. Topp” Pink Floyd is great but it should be “they” not “he”

to a “Asshole Rose” yes those albums count because they were composed by if not roger but most of pink floys, it soulds just like the other albums with the predictable differences that occur from album to album

and i would sell computer, ipod everything to see Pink back in concert together

Joe Schlesak | 10/31/2007, 10:23 am EST

$257!! Ouch. Hopefully all these albums in this set have been meticuously remastered, it would be nice if they were hybrids too. But in my opinion the last true Floyd album was the Final Cut. Not only that each album should have the non-lp singles on them in some kind of chronological order. And lastly The Division Bell should be wiped from our memory banks for all eternity, it is absolutely the worst Floyd album ever!!!

doyle | 11/4/2007, 3:00 am EST

I think we should boycott the whole thing. It’s an insult to the fans that they would only make 10,000 copies. Us, the fans made Pink Floyd, if it wasn’t for us, they would be no where. Also it seems an insult that David doesn’t want to Pink Floyd to get back again. He thinks Pink Floyd is old news. Have you heard his latest album? It isn’t even very good, and you can never find any of the stuff he has released lately, it seems that he only caters to Europe.

I’m a big Pink Floyd fan, but it seems that they don’t care about there fans, especially David Gilmour.

He says that he doesn’t need the money – HEY DAVID – HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF DONATING THE MONEY TO A GOOD CAUSE?

Like I said the whole thing is an insult and it turns my stomach!

Andrew | 11/5/2007, 2:21 am EST

Doyle, I hope you realise how ignorant you sound. Firstly, if you were such a “big Pink Floyd fan” you would know that David Gilmour has been part of many charity organisations over the years. He even sold his 3.5 million pound house to charity in 2003, so before you ask “HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF DONATING THE MONEY TO A GOOD CAUSE?” it might pay know something about the band first. And if the rest of the band don’t care about their fans, and as you say have enough money, why have they still done Pink Floyd tours in their 60’s?

Obviously the band members recognise that all Pink Floyd fans would love to see them reunite, but its probably hard for them to forget the impact of Roger’s ego before they split up. Sure he can say he would’nt mind another reunion, but he should probably apologise first for being such an egomaniac that led to the break up of the band in the first place.

greg | 11/5/2007, 9:57 pm EST

doyle a whiney crybaby…a true fan doesnt bitch,oh poor baby david gilmore doesnt care about me boo hoo hoo . get over yourself if your dont like it there are probably several million more that do.

Zebediah Z. Topp, Revisited | 11/6/2007, 6:16 pm EST

Dear Doyle
Don’t give me that do goody good BS.

Dear Someone who cares
So Pink Floyd is actually the name of the band, and not some guy? Next thing you’ll do is tell me the same thing about ZZ Top. Well if that were so, then how come he sings the lyrics “Pink isn’t well he stayed back at the hotel” and “oh by the way, which one is Pink.” Oh, wait, I get it now. Sorry for my mistake,
Sincerely
Zebediah Z. Topp (you know, like ZZ Top, which I guess is a band, and not some guy).

PINK FLOYD FAN OF ARGENTINA | 11/8/2007, 2:56 pm EST

I M FROM ARGENTINA AND BUY THE NEW BOX IS TO DIFICULTED, NOT ONLY FOR THE MONEY IF NOT THAT HERE IS TOO DIFICULTED TO FOUND IT. 10.000 COPIES IS NOT ENOGTH.

zag | 11/8/2007, 7:17 pm EST

WTF ! No outtakes, no new stuff. Nothing that I haven´t bought first vinyl, then cds. Now this, thanks but no thanks :-/

Marshall Tucker | 11/8/2007, 11:25 pm EST

Dear Z.Z. Topp,
You are not a real fan! The quote from “Have a Cigar” was originally, “Oh, by the way, I wish one of you’d speak” as the band was known not talk to media or press. Only after a meeting with Yoko Ono during a premier of the Wall did they break their silence to call her a bad name when she was critical of Sir Bob Geldof, who is a person not a band.

Blotto Branken | 11/9/2007, 7:31 am EST

Dear Mr. Tucker
Why must all of your e-mail threads ALWAYS wind up being about the Boomtown Rats. You need to get over them.
Dear Pink Fan from Argentina
Your English is pretty good, and you adequately communicate your plight. You may try ordering from amazon.com. When Richard Thompson, who in some people’s opinion is a better guitarist than David Gilmour and writes more intelligent, less self indulgent lyrics that Roger Waters, but doesn’t hold a candle to Nick Mason as a drummer, puts his work on sale in the UK before it’s in the US, I’ll order it from Amazon’s UK site. Now that I think of it, Pink Floyd could have used more drum solos.

doyle | 11/9/2007, 8:57 pm EST

Actually I’m quite aware that he has donated his house. So let’s give him an award. Uh, the problem is with David not Roger. They may have had problems in the past that might have been Roger’s fault, but read the article he slams Roger. So clearly he is the one preventing the reunion. You also have to agree that neither David’s current work or anything since The Wall or Roger’s departure has been very good. So clearly they were better as a band than indvidually. None of their solo careers have been very good. Though I have to admit that David has had success at marketing his name for sales.

Sean | 11/10/2007, 4:55 pm EST

Dear Doyle
I must disagree with you on your assessment of the quality of Roger Waters’ post Floyd work. You state none of the solo carreers has been very good. While admittedly they aren’t Floyd, Pros and Cons, KAOS, and to a lesser extent Amused have been decent works–not great but you can’t say “not very good.” Well admittedly, you can. After all, this is a board for which you can say just about anything without fear of reprecussion. So I stand corrected, go ahead and bad mouth the individual members as much as you wish. Also, David Gilmour is okay as a guitarist, and he sings Waters’ lyrics quite well.

pinky | 11/15/2007, 9:26 pm EST

you’re all a bunch of ignorant music hating philistines!

manu | 11/16/2007, 11:09 am EST

I preorderer in Amazon already, but I’m not very sure now, I lost all my PF cds in a travel and this will bring them back all together, but it seems like the pakage is to little and there is no books inside like tho ones on the regular cds, so I don’t know, I would like to see more information on the quality of the recordings, remasterization or something that can ssure that is not only a simple re-edition. Oh, By the way: I do believe “Division bell” is a great albun, more floyd than “Momentary” but the best is “piper” followed by “dark side”, “animals” and “wish you were here” . I don’t know why I don’t like the wall anymore and I hate the studio part of Unmaguma…bye

elcho | 11/16/2007, 11:20 am EST

oh by the way: I can’t believe syd’s picture is not there, always as a symbol but never his face. the solo work will interesting if they do something like this. “Broken China” is great and “amused to death” too.

manu | 11/16/2007, 11:34 am EST

Dimensions: 5.8″ (High) x 5.7″ (Wide) x 3.7″ (Deep) isn’t it small? are there lyrics in each cd? pictures?

Kristen Gregory | 11/26/2007, 12:10 pm EST

Dear Santa,

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE Bring me one of these~!!!!

Phillip Belcher | 12/6/2007, 7:59 pm EST

No No No it cant be true, Pink floyd could not possibly pass this off as the 40th year collection of thier works. Please a fan of 20 30 or 40 years would not narnish thier already large catalog of music with what they already have. I have these albums 2 or 3 times over and need not buy them again. Want to keep the dream alive boys then dont sell something you yourselves cant possilbly be happy with. P.s I have a signed air guitar.??

SS70 | 12/7/2007, 12:54 am EST

Too much money asked for, too little information given, one too many times back to the well with the same goods. I’m waiting for proper, DAMN good remasters with singles and the two unreleased Barrett songs. I hate mini-album CD sleeves. It just reminds me of how far the art of the album cover has fallen since the advent of the CD.

Dave P in CT | 12/7/2007, 2:38 pm EST

You know — while this box set sure looks purty and all, my complaint echoes that of others who have already posted here: why no bonus material? It would seem that this would have been a great opportunity to throw in a CD or two full of rare and hard-to-find stuff. Or, if the rarities route was a no go, why not make it a dual-disc 5.1 treatment a la the Talking Heads “Brick” box set? But “OBTW” is just the studio albums – and that’s that. As much as the “Shine On” box was kind of a let-down in that the majority of it was just straight-up studio albums (although many had been remastered to sound better than ever – especially “Wish You Were Here”), at least it had the early rarities CD and the big hardcover book. Unfortunately, the main objective of this set seems to be rake in tons of Christmas cash rather than creating an amazing and truly unique addition to the Pink Floyd catalog. Perhaps they should have called it “Oh BUY the Way” instead?

Flixx57 | 12/8/2007, 2:08 pm EST

there should definatly be more to this box set then just the albums, at least Shine On had actual disc cases. this is definatly a disapointment for the 40th anniversary.

yop | 12/10/2007, 6:04 am EST

does the box set come on MP3 format?, there are In the offical web of Pink Floyd two prices, the 139 punds one means the conventional Compact disc and what about the other 99 pounds one… does it come on MP3 format instead of Compact Disc??. The last one is not avalaible at Amazon, you just find it at the PF official Web if you want to buy it, why is that?, why is it that there are a big diference at the price of each one?, are they really Mp3 cds, or it just let you to download from a particular internet place?. Please help me.

Monica G. | 12/27/2007, 6:11 pm EST

I bought the set for my partner who is a die hard fan, but for the amount of money spent we were very disappointed with the mistake on the Umaggumma dvds the tracks are labelled incorrectly. Also a little disappointed with no write up material as the print on each sleeve is so tiny you can’t read a thing. I also would have included Relics just to have it complete. Other that that the music is great as always but just a bummer the prices are getting so out of this world.

doyle | 1/1/2008, 3:10 pm EST

Sean,

I do agree with you that Roger is good at writing Lyrics. And Amused to death is mostly ok, there are a couple of songs that I do not like. It just seems that alot of Roger’s post Floyd work is just too like the wall or the final cut. I would like to see Roger come out with a single that will compete with David’s new album. It would also be nice to see new stuff from Nick and Richard.

judah1217 | 4/28/2008, 2:53 pm EST

it’s pink floyd. i don’t care how much.i love the mini lp style too.

Floydian | 6/11/2008, 11:39 pm EST
