T.I.’s Arrest Re-Opens The Great Snitchin’ Debate of ‘07

10/24/07, 1:49 pm EST

T.I. is in big trouble. How big? “If he gets ten years, that ain’t bad,” friend 50 Cent tells MTV News. While a decade in prison sounds pretty damn bad to us, other pals of the “King of the South” place the blame for his weapons arrest not only on T.I. but also the bodyguard that “snitched” on him to the Feds. “Tip was feeding this man’s family. We don’t do it like that, dog,” opinionated rapper David Banner said. “We gotta start making the environment in our neighborhoods not conducive to snitching. How I’m doing this song, I’mma make it uncomfortable for snitches.” The song Banner is referring to is his Internet-only release “B.A.N. (The Love Song),” which also name-checks Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, Lil Wayne and Snoop Dogg. As you may recall, snitchin’ is also unpopular with Cam’ron and Busta Rhymes.
Some blame the tattletales for T.I.’s fall, while others blame a “hip-hop task force” that is specifically in place to catch rappers in felonious acts.
As Wu-Tang mastermind RZA put it, “They looking [to lock us up] for whatever we do. … The black community has moved up to being creative and making money, and that means that these cops need jobs and their job is to come and follow us and watch us. … I’m a nerd right now. I don’t play nothing, nothing ’cause all eyes are on us.” Common, Young Jeezy and Wyclef Jean (who recently called Tip a “prophet” and compared him to Malcolm X, according to MTV News) are banding behind T.I. and keeping their “fingers crossed.” As for police profiling rappers, we don’t recommend anyone pay attention to this Dallas initiative aimed at eradicating low-riding baggy pants.

some of these motherf*ckers on here are stupid. You dont think that its possible that he was set-up? Even if he wasnt, he had a close friend of his Philant Johnson get killed while on the road. How would you protect yourself if someone is shooting at you on the street just because of your celebrity…Dont judge cus u wasnt there! And dont forget that it wasnt him purchasing the weapons. it was his Rat bodyguard, he was on probabtion…lol

Mello1 | 11/6/2007, 11:20 am EST

I don’t believe some of the comments that are posted here. We, as black people, have our priorities F**K UP! We complain all the time about how we get caught doing stupid things that affects our lives and turnaround and blame someone else that it’s not my fault. It amazes me why we get labeled as unintelligent people. We embrace behavior that is always negative and detrimental to our well being. Here, we have multi-millionaires behaving like there still in the hood and trying the keep their “Street Cred” It’s a shame to waste talent and time on stupidity. It’s inexcusable that we embrace it. We alway talk about conspiracies and setups. It’s simple, don’t commit the crime, if you can’t do the time!

Fulton County Representer | 10/31/2007, 7:53 pm EST

Come on now, we all know that T.I. isn’t suppose to have the weapons, but look at it from his side for a minute, he is a VERY wealthy ex-dope dealer who probably has some enemies who would rob him blind if they had a chance, couldn’t you see yourself owning a few weapons to?! But on the real side of things he should have just played it cool, he was already on probation.

retard | 10/31/2007, 10:58 am EST

well shit hit hte fan here in south africa about T.I being snitched by someone he indirectly puts food on the table for and that made him a bad person but truth is; T.I was found on the wrong side of the law and justice should somehow be exercised. com’on T.I.P U WAS GOING TO A THE BET CEREMONY not a shooting spree

Daniel | 10/29/2007, 4:19 pm EST

Hey David, my comment is maybe you should stop ripping off Chris Rock jokes and come up with a real reply instead of wasting space and people’s time.

DAVID | 10/26/2007, 1:37 pm EST

I know that none of you want my political opinion, but you know what i think needs to be done? NOT gun control, but bullet control. If you have legel, regestered guns for PROTECTION, then fine. but you need a special permit to but regular bullets. Think about it…you`ll be able to buy hard plastic bullets, rubber bullets that are damn HARD ,or tranqualizer dars. Anything that you need to protect yourself and noting more. The Gun Nuts its for self protection, so they should not have a problem if they can protect themselves perfectly without having to power to completely KILL somebody unless you at Point-blank range. Reg. Bullets will only be available with Hunter permits, and only for hunting guns and not I dunno, Glocks. And police, ect. Will have deadly Bullets DUH. now how do you “Self Protection” Gun people respond?
Somebody PLEASE respond and tell me what ya think.

GERA | 10/26/2007, 10:25 am EST

T.I DONT DESERVE TO SERVE NO TIME IN JAIL PERIOD, WHAT HE DID WASNT EVEN A CASE OF FIRIN AT SOMEONE SO HE SHOULD BE RELEASED……….

GERA | 10/26/2007, 10:24 am EST

T.I DONT DESERVE TO SERVE NO TIME IN JAIL PERIOD, WHAT HE DID WASNT EVEN A CASE OF FIRIN AT SOMEONE SO HE SHOULD BE RELEASED……….

LIQUID FIRE | 10/25/2007, 1:39 pm EST

Let’s put things in perspective 4 a moment…….

Think about ALL the people you know personally, that you loved, or just care about somewhat….. etc…. that has been killed or jailed for a long stretch of time…and the killer is still AT LARGE or the person who’s the guilty person that actually should be DOING THE TIME…is still at LARGE…….Living good…or not living well……..

Do you think the truth should be EXPOSED?

This is when snitching becomes the issue.

I can assure you….if there were more snitches…..I’m not saying CRIME would stop…completely…but crime would be reduced…..

IT’S MORE ABOUT THE WITNESS PROTECTION PROGRAM……

The bottom line there are people who KNOW SPECIFICALLY who’s killed your love ones…or who is not doing the PRISON TIME…that your love ones are doing……The reason is because of NOT SNITCHING….

There are communities across the states…better yet across the GLOBE…..who know exactly who’s casuing the crime….in their communities…BUT ARE AFRAID TO SNITCH

COPS DO IT ALL THE TIME..AFRAID TO SNITCH ON THEIR FELLOW OFFICERS

WE CONTROLL OUR OWN DESTINY…THE CHOICE IS YOURS

TO SNITCH…OR NOT TO SNITCH IS THE QUESTION

Somewhere In The Middle | 10/25/2007, 12:08 pm EST

TI is a criminal and he deserves what he gets. Even if the crime he committed does not warrant a ten year sentence, he should get ten years for stupidity. Buying guns on the way to an awards show you are performing at is pretty goddamn stupid.
As for David Banner, are you serious? He wants to make the neighborhood not conducive to snitching. How about making it conducive for kids to go to school, without having to worry about getting shot; how about making it conducive for an illegitimacy rate less than 70%; how about making it conducive for people to do something more with their lives than ending up dead, in jail, or becoming some piss poor no talent ass clown gangsta rapper pansy like David Banner.
It’s no wonder that Cristal doens’t want to be associated with the “hip-hop lifestyle” and why no one takes hip-hop seriously.
As for 305-561 I would say you are retarded, but that would be an insult to retarded people, you are dumber than s@%t.

Shamus Goldensteinbergbaum | 10/25/2007, 9:56 am EST

It’s a known fact that TI needed those machine guns because he is an avid sportsman. What kind of world do we live in when white people are allowed to go hunting but superstar hip hop MCs get arrested for buying the equipment to engage in a great america hobby? This reeks of peta. First michael vick, now TI. It’s a damn shame, a damn crying shame!

Da truf | 10/25/2007, 9:41 am EST

It’s never my fault! Oh wo is me, it’s never my fault!

The criminal element plays by no rules, while the law has to abide by them. Informants (or as some refer to as snitches) are fair game so deal with it.

Bill Cosby has a strong message that should be embraced.

The African American culture needs to take a stand against negative influence. As a whole, it will never get out of second gear until negative influence is weeded out of the family system and not allowed to influence our children.

For example, look at the commercials for American Gangster. I have yet to see this film, but the commercial sends the wrong message. And low and behold, Jay Z is in the back-drop on the soundtrack not because his music was written in this era, but because he writes and glorifies the life-style.

Very sad.

jdunn56 | 10/25/2007, 9:16 am EST

305-561 FL are you kidding me? firstly, you spelled “genius” wrong moron. Apparently you don’t appreciate irony. Secondly, do you need silencers to “protect yourself”? the dudes a talentless thug, just as 95% of the dirty south rappers and hip hop artists are. He needs to go to jail. Period. You are an absolute douchenozzle if you believe any of what you typed.

Clamhorn | 10/25/2007, 8:26 am EST

This is absurd. This man is a common criminal who broke the law repeatedly and then bragged about it, now people are complaining that he is being targeted by the police? A good way to avoid being targeted by law enforcement (aside from maybe… I dunno… not breaking the law?) is to stop bragging about doing illegal things.

Secondly, the reason this particular criminal is likely to get a longer sentence is that he has a police record a mile long. When you continue to break the law, the punishment increases each time you demonstrate that you are not willing to live within the rules of decent society.

Idiot | 10/25/2007, 1:20 am EST

He was buying military assault rifles and silencers-which are illegal under all circumstances except by government agencies and he was on probation.
BANNER you F**king moron the problem is not snitchin the problem is idioys like you condone this behavior.

You talk about being a man then be one pussy- own up to you actions-your so tuff you need someone to buy your guns in case you get caught. hypocrites pussys-this is why “Hip Hop is dead”

DAVID | 10/24/2007, 10:06 pm EST

I agree with wes. Its his fault, but because hes in the public eye his sentence will be much worse then usual (unless 50 is lying, with neeeever happens (*cough cough retirement*).

Wes | 10/24/2007, 9:47 pm EST

We all know T.I. was wrong for having the guns. The debate can go on for days about sentencing and snitching. The sad thing is that he knew he was in the public eye and therefore was an easy target for the feds and made such a stupid mistake. Any of us could have done the same thing but depending on our life situations. I just hope that all celebrities will start making better choices so they can better enjoy the life they are blessed to have after coming from such humble backgrounds.

DAVID | 10/24/2007, 8:51 pm EST

DAVID | 10/24/2007, 8:47 pm EST

T.I. deserves to be punished if he broke the law, But I think 10 years is VERY harsh. I agree that rapers are given worse sentences than others, but he deserves something. Just not as much.

R n' R | 10/24/2007, 8:10 pm EST

Hip Hop Task Farce…that’s what that is. Why doesn’t anyone want the snitching to start and get the garbage off the streets? Really now, think about it. Cops wouldn’t spend all there time looking for the culprits and hasseling the neighborhoods if these guys were turned in by the citizens who saw it go down. It isn’t rocket science or hip-hop science. Cops will keep looking for the perp until he is turned in, so let them know and leave your neighborhood free from being hasseled by the cops.

mike | 10/24/2007, 7:09 pm EST

305-561 FL you deserve an award you have written the dumbest the dumbest thing I have ever read on the Internet, not an easy task. Congratulations!

hey 305 | 10/24/2007, 6:08 pm EST

u spelled genius wrong

305-561 FL | 10/24/2007, 5:12 pm EST

I realize some of you are feed crap from the media to lead you to believe that some of these rappers are evil. When you have alot of money and previously lived a life of crime, people get jeolous and come to get you. Thats why he had a bodyguard. The guns are for defense. All the guns that the government restricts you from having are very powerful. But could you think of a better way to kill a robber or murderer who is about to kill you with an ak while hes wearing body armor? I know i cant, thats why i have a .50 caliber handgun thats REGISTERED. Ti’s guns are illegal which is why he couldnt register them. He has military grade guns. But you need them to kill someone who is wearing body armor i’d think. Another case of the police going over the edge on someone who is just trying to protect themselve. Grow up uninformed children. Before you say something about a topic you know nothing about. Im cuban/italian. I dont live a life of crime, but im not going to be dumb and not have protection incase someone who is tries to rob me. T.I had a previous criminal record which prohibits him from buying guns. That was his previous life. The government doesnt believe in second-chances. You die, they dont find your murderer. Simple. T.I doesnt want that. Tupac and Biggie Smalls both died without the police knowing who killed em. Back in a time when spraying people wasnt so big. Now its the number one thing for people in socially and economically deprived areas.

South-Dade County Genious

De-Bo | 10/24/2007, 4:10 pm EST

Its okay. We won’t have to deal with any of these idiots in the afterlife. They are full of pride, envy, lust, vanity, greed, and wrath. Two short of the whole kitten caboodle. We all know where they are going. Hahahaha.

Jake | 10/24/2007, 4:07 pm EST

HE BOUGHT WEAPONS WHILE ON FUCKING PROBATION!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!?!?!

Johnny Kickass | 10/24/2007, 3:43 pm EST

This is hilarious. Let’s see: commit serious repeated crimes, glorify and rap about them on million-selling albums and all over radio and MTV, then complain about persecution when the police, you know, arrest you.

lol…What world do these people live in?!

This is nonsense... | 10/24/2007, 3:19 pm EST

David banner and all them rappers are stupid as shit. Obey the law bitches and you don’t have to worry about snitches!!! How easy is that!!!!

Tony | 10/24/2007, 2:53 pm EST

At this point the evidence is conclusory: T.I. (and most other successful rappers) have a financial/spatial reasoning problem that doesn’t allow them to believe that due to their fortunes they need no longer be in the ghetto nor act like it. Idiot.

Sucka Ass Man | 10/24/2007, 2:51 pm EST

Yo yo yo like we don’t like them snitches and the bitches that ditches know what I’m sayin. It be da force that keep da brotha down just like the way that my shit is brown. We is rapping like flash and making da cash but the man treat us like we is some piece of trash. So I scratch my balls and wish us luck ’cause da brothas are here to stay and to all go fuck. Yo man like peace out, chill.

TPG | 10/24/2007, 2:44 pm EST

Thanks for deleting my earlier comment, morons.

Spencer | 10/24/2007, 2:37 pm EST

instead of blaming snitches or a “hip-hop task force,” why don’t they blame themselves for, i don’t know, breaking the law?! it’s hardly a conspiracy…

SVUF | 10/24/2007, 2:18 pm EST

Theses rappers and hip-hop stars have the wrong slant on life!! Why have bodyguards when you have your own arsenal of illegal weaponary?

Tim | 10/24/2007, 2:03 pm EST

“while others blame a “hip-hop task force” that is specifically in place to catch rappers in felonious acts.”

Why’d they need a freaking task force for that? Rappers do nothing but felonies and strut their destructive presence in their videos.
