Even though Metallica’s Lars Ulrich still has no new news to report since his last post on the band’s official Web site, he does provide national webpaper The Examiner with an interesting look into the band’s follow-up to 2003’s St. Anger. According to the piece, the album is “almost finished,” sans a few vocal mixes. As for song titles, there’s “German Soup,” “Black Squirrel,” “19,” “10” and “Glass Cow.” We wouldn’t put too much stock in the song titles staying put, however. Ulrich admits they’re “Just names that relate to where the idea came from, like Glasgow, Scotland became ‘Glass Cow.’ And when we don’t have anything clever to call it, we just call it a number. They’re just silly working titles.” Too bad, we were kinda looking forward to “Black Squirrel.” On the subject of the band’s switch from longtime helmer Bob Rock to production guru Rick Rubin, Ulrich said, “For our own sanity, our own creative survival, we needed to work with a different set of circumstances and dynamics … Rick’s taken everything we’ve known about making records and completely turned it upside down.” The album is still set for a February 2008 release, with or without “German Soup.”
