Neil Young Journeys Through the Past at Idaho Tour Kick-Off

10/19/07, 11:54 am EST

Last night, Rock Daily thought we hit the jackpot when Bruce Springsteen played “Meeting Across the River” and “Jungleland” at Madison Square Garden, but little did we know that in Boise, Idaho, Neil Young was kicking off his tour with one of the craziest setlists of his entire career. Playing no less than four songs from various unreleased mid-Seventies albums, Young also dug out super rarities “Ambulance Blues,” “Campaigner,” “Bad Fog of Loneliness” and “A Man Needs a Maid,” which he hadn’t touched in thirty-one years. Only four songs from his forthcoming Chrome Dreams II were performed. What inspired the nostalgia-adverse Young to reach so far back? Might he be going through his mid-Seventies tapes in preparation for Archives Volume 2 — even though Volume 1 has yet to see the light of day? With this guy you never know. The complete setlist is after the jump.

The first part of the show was performed solo acoustic, the second with a small band containing pedal steel guitarist Ben Keith, bassist Rick Rosas, Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina with Anthony Crawford and Young’s wife Pegi on background vocals.

BUT THERE SEEM’S TO BE A PROBLEM THE LAST 2 CONCERTS WERE POSTPONED WHAT IS HAPPPENING?…I HOPE IT’S NOT ILLNESS…

I saw Neil last night, 12/16 at the United Palace Theater for my 45th birthday and he didn’t let me down. It’s so great to see someone still play music on stage with so much inspiration and so un-contrived. The Theater is awsome and the people were all great. Anyway; He tore it up as usual and i got to hammered to remember the setlist but it was a great mix of material, acoustic & electric.

We were hiding behind hay bales,we were planting in the full moon, we had given all we had to something new Rock on Neil!

Neil In Denver (Nov 6) | 11/7/2007, 3:54 am EST

This was a sweet show. Neil’s voice was as good as ever and he was very accurate with his instrument in all the songs. He can be quite ragged and sloppy at times but not tonight.

The first set was slightly different but he was in Denver just the night before and probably felt the need to mix it up a little. I was very disappointed not to hear Heart Of Gold but Old Man made up for it. Campaigner was omitted completely, no song in it’s place–sucks! Still a great show though.

SET ONE
=======
From Hank To Hendrix
Ambulance Blues
Sad Movies
A Man Needs A Maid
No One Seems To Know
Harvest
Journey Through The Past
Mellow My Mind
Love Art Blues
Love Is A Rose
Old Man

SET TWO & ENCORE
================
- exactly the same as Boise, ID (above)

They put up different oil paintings for each song in the second set so unless they have oil paintings for all his songs I bet the second set will be the same everywhere, however, I could see deviations during the encore.

Colorado Springs | 11/6/2007, 4:53 pm EST

Funny, I went back to look and see who slammed Neil in their post…figures, some redneck “Southern Man” fool. Your kind lost the war you dumb, stupid, sh*t-kickin’, hick. Go wave your defeated Confederate flag at the dive bar right down the street from your ghetto trailer. I’ll be in Denver tonight Chinese-eyed, cotton-mouthed, and grooving to Neil.

Mark | 11/6/2007, 12:35 pm EST

Yes. Neil is awesome and I have “kneeled for Neil” for a very long time now. His 1st night at the Wells Fargo theatre was nice but very little variation from recent shows on the tour. Actually, it was the ticket prices and the venue itself that was the let down. But considering that this is 2007/08 there is not a whole lot of Rocking in the free world left.

Guitargeezer | 10/24/2007, 10:02 am EST

Well the Seattle show is over. The first acoustic set was magic. Simply exquisite. The second set rocked. The aisles were packed with happy jumping/dancing people. Neil looked 30 years younger. Some guy yelled out “Like a Hurricane” in the acoustic set. This got a reaction from Neil, like what are you thinking????? The final song for the night was “Like a Hurricane”. Does Neil really take requests??

This Notes For You | 10/24/2007, 12:04 am EST

I’ve been seeing Neil tour for 25 years. I’ve seen him drill a hole in the sky over Red Rocks, drag me over the rainbow in Cheyenne, crunch my ear drums in Seattle, but I’ve never seen him so relaxed and happy on stage. The notes were clear and the music strong. It seems impossible that an artist could be this inspiring and creative after decades, and it is; unless you’re Neil.

Guitargeezer | 10/23/2007, 10:22 pm EST

I love the net! I’m sitting here at the WaMu theater I seattle. Its ten minutes to
show time. I just read the set list, and can’t believe it. Excited is not strong enough!!

Barstool Blues | 10/22/2007, 2:57 pm EST

When I read what the setlist was I nearly creamed myself. I’m only 23 so I wasn’t able to see Neil in his 70s heyday and I’m so excited to hear ambulance blues and all the others live.

As long as you fools... | 10/22/2007, 11:25 am EST

…will fork over that much money to see a show, the industry will continue to stick it to us…

…and I will continue to refuse to go.

neaL | 10/22/2007, 3:28 am EST

neil is great

Jory | 10/22/2007, 1:47 am EST

This was a great concert. Neil stopped playing 30 seconds into From Hank to Hendrix because his guitar was out of tune. It was amazing to hear Ambulance Blues and Campaigner live. Great concert, and worth the drive from Utah

corky | 10/21/2007, 8:29 am EST

What a great thing the net is,allowing the chance to read reviews & commentary so quickly after a show..I too paid a high ticket price & ridiculous fees to Ticketbastard for my St.Louis show, & face a 4+ hour drive home on a weeknight (doing the same for Dylan there tomorrow) But you know what? It is all worth it for one great song! Saw Neil’s “Greendale” tour stop in KC a few years bask. He came out for the encore, & from m 3rd row seat (who CARES how much that cost!) I saw him say to the bass player ‘Cinnamon’…nearly wet myself, what an amazing artist! See him if at all possible! Thanks for listening..

Neil films and records every show he plays.

Justin | 10/20/2007, 3:08 pm EST

Wow,

Park City Neil Fanatic | 10/20/2007, 12:51 pm EST

Drove up from UT…paid $141 for the ticket………would have paid $500. Greatest concert I have ever seen. Ambulance Blues was worth the price of the ticket. Been seeing Neil for over 25 years, this one was unbeleivable

Home Groan | 10/20/2007, 10:42 am EST

Absolutely, without a doubt,
one of the most amazing Musical Catalogues in the world.

I couldnt imagine hearing Cinnamon Girl live, it would be almost too good.

shakey with no deal. | 10/19/2007, 3:55 pm EST

it’s too bad that i have to pay 180
fucking dollars to see him.
that plus travel 400 miles to st Louis (i live in Tulsa)
goddamn Ticket master.
if he came here I’d pay it…begrudgingly but I’d pay it.

Barbara | 10/19/2007, 3:21 pm EST

“Tonight’s the Night” rocked and as the last song of the evening, it was a perfect ending for this special event.

Thanks Neil and band for coming to Idaho as a start to an incredible tour.

my spacedotcom/goddamnidiot | 10/19/2007, 3:09 pm EST

Wow. Just… wow. Can’t wait to see him in Philly in December.

dead man | 10/19/2007, 2:38 pm EST

I could listen to the dead man soundtrack for hours and still want more.

Catfish | 10/19/2007, 2:11 pm EST

I was there and it rocked… The perfect small venue and great setlist! Looked like the stage on Saturday Night Live….Thanks Neil!

Immerstahl | 10/19/2007, 1:57 pm EST

Once again, Neil Young puts on a dazzling show. He trotted out some old chestnuts that I’d never heard him play–and I’ve seen the man close to twenty times over the last 15 years. “Winterlong,” and “Tonight’s the Night,” were highlights for me… long live NY!

Shai | 10/19/2007, 1:23 pm EST

Awesome set! Man I wish I had been there…

reviving scatophilia | 10/19/2007, 12:58 pm EST

Great set. I hope this was filmed for a DVD release.
