Nas Modifies Album Title, Trades “A” For “Er” And a Controversy To Be Named Later

10/19/07, 12:49 pm EST

Rev. Jesse Jackson can breathe a sigh of relief: Nas’ new album will no longer be titled Nigga. It’s Nigger now, according to the Illmatic MC. Regarding all the controversy surrounding his provocative choice of album titling, Nas said, “Stay out of our business. You ain’t got no business worrying about what the word ‘nigger’ is or acting like you know what my album is about without talking to me.” The comment, made to MTV News, was aimed at Fox News, who quoted the NAACP and Jackson following Nas’ shocking announcement. So why, in the post-Imus era, is Nas electing to ruffle feathers? “I wanna make the word easy on muthafuckas’ ears. You see how white boys ain’t mad at ‘cracker’ ’cause it don’t have the same [sting] as ‘nigger’? I want ‘nigger’ to have less meaning [than] ‘cracker,’” Nas explained, though his rationalization doesn’t factor in that you could put Cheez-Whiz on a cracker, there are firecrackers and Cracker-Jacks, thus making “cracker” less potent as a racial epithet in modern society. If Nas can find another everyday use for the n-word, then he might be on to something.

Nas also denies the denial from Def Jam boss L.A. Reid, who reportedly said the album wasn’t even on the label’s release schedule. “None of us knows where that came from,” says Nas, who insists his album, his second for Def Jam, will be released on December 11th. But this album is not just about making waves; it’s also about the music (he also said a bunch of stuff about civil-rights leader Medger Evers and his daughter, though). Nigger, or the N-Word Album for the squeamish, will feature appearances by Diddy, Jermaine Dupri, DJ Toomp and Nas’ frequent collaborator Salaam Remi. Nas expects to release the first single from the album a day or two after his Greatest Hits come out on November 6th.

Comedian and social activist Dick Gregory called his 1968 biography the same thing. See how far we’ve come?

I’m seriously disappointed in the direction this country has gone intellectually in regard to words. Context matters! Semantics matters! Not the word itself. If I call someone an evil waste of life, they wouldn’t blink an eye yet if I call them some name, they go nuts. What is wrong with this country is that people don’t care so much about the meaning, but the words used themselves. It’s completely backwards. How is it that I can get away with calling someone a maternal inseminator yet not the more colloquial version?

Now you might have noticed I didn’t use any ‘bad’ words writing this. That’s because I wanted to show how apathetic we are to peoples point, and only look at the words used instead of digging beneath the surface. I just insulted each and everyone who believes in ‘bad’ words, by calling them shallow and mundane and intellectually bereft, yet how many noticed or cared? Not many I would imagine. That’s whats wrong about this issue. That’s what needs to change. Context and semantics matter, not the letters used to imply them.

Good for nas to not completely give in to the brainwashed PC fascists.

Johnny Kickass | 10/19/2007, 3:26 pm EST

People only act like they’re so offended by words because they’re told over and over again they’re SUPPOSED to find it offensive.

eep | 10/19/2007, 4:12 pm EST

Nice and self-righteous of you, Naomi Rothpearl. Never underestimate the power of presumption!

NaS is the most politically active, intellectually challenging mainstream rapper around (Mos Def loses points due to an inability to actually release new music).

Name the album whatever’s clever, I’ll buy it the first day.

shemp | 10/19/2007, 4:35 pm EST

you should never be anti semantic. it’s just hurtful.

Bling, you should care, this is an example of why: http://cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/u p/player/popup/?rn=4226712&cl= 4575013&src=news

Stay apathetic long enough, and it might come knocking on your doorstep. If you can’t care about other peoples rights, then at least be concerned with your own.

Richard Pryor has the “N” word in his comedy routines, but everyone understood that is was more a term of affection towards his people more than anything else.

He had albums entitled That Ni***r’s Crazy, And Bicentenial Ni****. I don’t think his brillant comedic style would survive in such a politically correct and brainwashed society. What a shame.

Yeah, he’s guilty, but he’s not going to do time.

Also, i’m not a white pretending to be black; i’m a black pretending to be white.

Actually I’m a white pretending i’m a black who’s pretending to be white!!!

GU$ | 10/20/2007, 6:27 am EST

it is just a word that has too much power. and all you people are doing is giving it more power. also you must remember that nigger or nigga really only has a negative meaning in the USA and a few countries where there was slavery. a lot of other countries around the world know it more through hip hop where it is used freely as all words should be allowed to be,

SVUF | 10/20/2007, 12:41 pm EST

It’s a shame how everything is becoming political. It seems to me that Nas is using this title to capture the public’a attention to buy his upcoming album. In my opinion, that’s a sign of little or no talent. If any musician has to rely on or is more concerned of the title and/or what is depicted on an album, over the songs in it has no talent!

Musical Jenius | 10/20/2007, 7:57 pm EST

Nas is a genius.

R U Kidding Me??? | 10/21/2007, 4:10 am EST

“also you must remember that nigger or nigga really only has a negative meaning in the USA and a few countries where there was slavery”

You apparently don’t seem understand that THERE IS history beyond 300 ago. A FEW countries where there was slavery??? WTF are you talking about???

There was a time not more than 700 years AGO where there was NOTHING BUT SLAVERY; so take your backhanded America bashing and fuckin’ shove it!!!

“nigga really only has a negative meaning in the USA and a few countries”

And where are the majority of these records sold, Armenia???? That’s precisely why the word is used, because they know their audiences will understand the nigga/nigg** juxtapostion. You really need to get your head out of your ass!!!

madi simmons | 10/21/2007, 12:20 pm EST

the word has to go,as a BLACK MAN,i dont use anymore and i for DAMN sure wont tolerate someone calling me that,,,

Madi Simmons | 10/21/2007, 12:23 pm EST

Its time to put that word to rest,we are not,nor have EVER been N.z Richard Pryor went to africa, and it had such a profound affect on him, that he banished that word from his speech for the rest of his life..WE can do the same.WHEN YOU RESPECT YOURSELF,THEN OTHERS MUST FOLLOW

WHAT’S GOING ON???!!
I REALLY DON’T UNDERSTAND THE CONTROVERSY?!
AN ARTIST SHOULD BE ALWAYS FREE TO EXPRESS HIMSELF, HOWEVER OR WHATEVER HE WANTS
DID ANYBODY SAID TO SALVADOR DALI “PLEASE REMOVE THE SEX THEME FROM YOUR PAINTINGS CAUSE I’M OFENDED?”,I DON’T THINK SO
THIS IS A USELESS, IDIOTIC WITCH HUNT(LIKE THE ONE IN THE 80′S TO METAL, DUED TO THE USE OF PROFANITY?

Gonzo Serj | 10/21/2007, 3:24 pm EST

I hate the word. And I can appreciate wanting to diminish its potency, but obviously Nas is doing this for nothing more than hype and bad publicity.
But aren’t hype and bad publicity hip-hop’s bread and butter?

I think the worse part about this album is probably going to be that it’s nothing original and it’s too derivitive.

It’s called Nigger. Big Deal. Call it “Big piece of sh!t” and make it a good album. Maybe then it will give us something worth talking about.

i (a white dude) was trying to make this point to someone recently. they (another white dude) told me the n-bomb was never acceptable to be uttered by anyone, especially anyone who isn’t black. yet he has no problem gay bashing (the f-word), or calling people “retarded”. 70 years ago it was considered awful to call someone “lame”, especially because FDR was the crip (not that kind) president.

by using it and not meaning a hateful thing, you are disempowering it from being hateful, regardless of your skin color.

Grandmaster Flash | 10/22/2007, 9:11 am EST

The album is still going to suck.

LINDA | 10/22/2007, 10:58 am EST

I AM SO TIRED OF THE WORD “NIGGER” BEING A DOUBLE STANDARD WORD. IF SOMEONE, ANYONE, SAYS FUCK, IT SOUNDS EQUALLY BAD OUT OF ANYONE’S MOUTH. HOW CAN NIGGER BE AN O.K. WORD FOR SOME AND NOT FOR OTHERS. IF IT IS A BAD WORD THEN IT SHOULD BE A BAD WORD FOR EVERYONE!!!

FRANK | 10/22/2007, 11:38 am EST

“post-Imus era”? That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Even stupider than when the whole thing was happening. Creating racism where racism doesn’t exist, RS are the idiots here!

farouk | 10/22/2007, 12:58 pm EST

you can title the album “volume IV” or whatever. is rap. it will suck.

DJ Gee | 10/22/2007, 2:17 pm EST

I read about Nas’ album on Globalgrind.com, and I like the idea of him trying to take away the hurt and potency from the word. I don’t know if he’ll accomplis it, but I can give him credit. Check the story out, its on the welcome tab of the site.

Nas is lame | 10/24/2007, 2:28 pm EST

I don’t think most people understand what’s going on. Nas is not a genius or a great activist. He’s a rapper, and he’s only using the title to get people talking. I like how he was going on about Medgar Evers and how racism is at it’s peak now. Yeah Nas, racism is SO much worse now than the 1800s or hell, even the 1960s. Seriously, stop playing the race card, stop using “nigger”. There’s nothing wrong with being proud of your race/heritage but shit like this just sets everyone back in the movement for true equality.

Tyler | 10/28/2007, 5:47 pm EST

Nas man is a hater and angry little boy !!I love his music. He hate’s and accuses people who have done nothing at all. There no different between nas and kkk !!!You don’t like that ? Prove me wrong, fool !

Khalid "Bless" Bey | 10/29/2007, 1:51 pm EST

It seems a few of the people in the forum are as alien to Nas’s music as they are to actual intelligence. Regardless of what he calls his album I look forward to it’s creative conclusion. By using the word as a title he has engaged all who otherwise would be uninterested and made fools of those small minded individuals who have nothing better to with a life that lacks importance. If you want to learn more about real time race relations pick up a copy of the book I’m featured in “Rat Bastards”. If you ask me any who makes an issue of the title of a musical release is a Rat Bastard. themself. If you don’t like the music in the first place then we can all reasonably assume you’ll have something negative to say.

I believe to many people(political) are contradicting what they say…you want the “hiphop” artist to talk about real events and you want to wake the community up and be “real” BUT when Nas takes this action (which I believe is to do just that)Us as a people want to protest…when this is exactly what our younger generation needs to hear because all the music they are listening to now is just plan horrible–with artists talking about sex and money in every song. I am for Nas and his Label they need to release the album . WAKE UP AND THINK “IF WE CAN’T HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH THEN WHAT DO WE HAVE?”

Black Love | 1/19/2008, 6:10 am EST

A Black Harvard law professor wrote a book titled Nigger the career of a troublesome word. Dick Gregory had the same damn title for his autobiography. And he was considered a major part of the civil rights movement. This album is history in the making, but I feel sorry for those who can’t get pass the title. That shows how narrow minded you people ase. I look forward to any artist with something vital to say, other then how much money he has. And that making it rain shit is getting old. But revolutionary Hip Hop will always be here. So get used to it. Nas will always be a legend so get used to him too.
