Goo Goo Doll John Rzeznik Polishes His Image (But No Turds) on Tonight’s Debut of “The Next Great American Band”

10/19/07, 5:54 pm EST

Heads up, rock reality-show fans: We’ll be back Monday with our first report on the already controversial American Idol spinoff The Next Great American Band. In anticipation of tonight’s anticipated series premiere, we checked in with one of the judges, Goo Goo Doll John Rzeznik, who had an answer for anyone who thinks a reality show is a crappy way to discover talent. “I don’t think anybody formed a band to get on the show, and if they did they were eliminated,” he said. “You know these bands are real bands — they play out in their neck of the woods, they’re all doing gigs and practicing in the garage together. It’s like a showcase, everybody wants a record deal.” Rzeznik confirmed the show’s prize is “a record deal, some commotion and all that” and insisted the series is a great vehicle for artists in an age of record-industry decline. “Record companies don’t have the money to promote bands the way something like this could,” he added.

While he insisted he won’t become a Simon Cowell (or Paula Abdul)-like figure on the show — his co-judges include Sheila E. and Australian Idol’s Ian “Dicko” Dickson — Rzeznik told Us Weekly that he wants to offer constructive criticism: “I’ve had my ass handed to me by critics a lot and you got to get tough about it … [but] I’m not a turd polisher, unfortunately.” When asked about nutty auditions, he replied, “My definition of crazy is probably different than yours, but you’re not going to see anybody like the kid that really couldn’t sing [on American Idol] that everybody votes for.” Sorry, Sanjaya! Looks like Rzeznik isn’t a gimmick guy. We wondered if anyone tried cartwheels or worse to get his attention during auditions and he waved it off with, “That don’t work on me … don’t pull that crap!” Sounds like John wants audiences to take this show seriously … we’ll see if that’s possible in just a few hours.

Saw the show and John. Paula Abdul has a friend

Dana Doll | 10/20/2007, 5:05 am EST

Would John recognize a good band when he saw one. He is in the Goo Goo Dolls, ya know?

Sarah | 10/20/2007, 11:08 am EST

Well, his band has been around for 20 years so I guess he would know a little something.

20 Years | 10/20/2007, 11:48 am EST

Sarah…true but their last hit single was released in 1998. Not announcing a breakup and refusing to acknowledge that the big leagues have chewed you up and spit you out are two different things. Guns n Roses still exist…does that mean they’ve been around for 22 years? Perhaps semantically, but addressing the spirit of your statement he’s hardly been successful in music for 20 years.

Anticipation! | 10/20/2007, 2:03 pm EST

In anticipation of this most-anticipated event, we anticipate a palpable excitement from the anticipating viewers… (Way to anticipate, RS!)

Jeanna Kennedy | 10/21/2007, 1:24 am EST

With 12 top 10 hits, a grammy nomination and ASCAP award? Yes, Rzeznik does know something about bands!

Check the Facts Jack | 10/21/2007, 6:23 am EST

Wow “20 Years”! That was a pretty cocky, know-it-all post. Next time check your facts so you don’t look so uninformed and ignorant.

Cheesecrop | 10/21/2007, 6:40 am EST

What really gets me is the fact that he states that record companies don’t have the $ to promote bands the way this show can. Those companies had $ years ago to promote bands before downloading tracks and American Idol became the way to go (think 98,99,00 when downloading wasn’t as prevalent) yet they still invested in pre-fab boy bands. You wouldn’t be in this situation had those companies routed a line of cash flow to their A & R Depts. back then.

“Well, his band has been around for 20 years so I guess he would know a little something.”

Not necessarily. They’re a band, but are they a good one? I don’t think they are.

Chicago Goo Fan | 10/21/2007, 10:13 pm EST

hey, 20 years, check YOUR facts. The Goos have indeed had MANY hit singles since 1998. Depends on what your definition of hit single means and your taste in music. Check the American Alternative charts, maybe?

I hate Dave Marsh | 10/21/2007, 11:12 pm EST

Yeah.

I know Shelia E is the one to turn to when it comes to finding good bands.

Some two hit wonder chick who only got those two hits because she blew Prince. Whatta genius she is.

Dana Doll | 10/21/2007, 11:27 pm EST

I hate I hate Dave Marsh | 10/21/2007, 11:12 pm EST

Well, she happens to be one of the greatest rock drummers on the planet. The whole pop star thing had to do with Prince liking her look and seeing her potential of being out front as a pop star. She was never really as interested in that as much as being a great percussionist. The whole blow job comment is stupid and shows a lot of ignorance on your part. Just saying something shocking for the sake of being shocking usually is going to blow up in your face. Sheila doesn’t deserve that, and you’re an idiot for saying it!!!!!!! It think you might you have her confused with Apolonia Kotero. As far as I know Sheila was never romantically linked to Prince. Prince dug her musically.

Michael Kohout | 10/22/2007, 12:30 pm EST

Rzeznik is at best a cheap Paul Westerberg copy.

At worst he’s a schlockmaster.

knowitall | 10/25/2007, 4:47 pm EST

John Rzeznik just put out a new CD,
and a single on the transformers Cd so where you come up with that his last hit single was 1998? If they have gone by the wayside, why do their concerts sell out? Again, know your facts before you spew the lies. If you don’t like them fine, but no need to lie or put the guy down. he does know his stuff.

School Girl | 10/25/2007, 8:36 pm EST

I watch it!!! I Love John Reznik, he is sooo hot!!!!

chinaski | 10/27/2007, 4:43 am EST

i’d like to take a pipe to his head just because of the way he spells his fuckin’ name. it drives me up the wall! what’s with the extra “z”? it’s not even in the right spot!

if he spelled it Rezznik, i wouldn’t give him any shit about it. but no, it’s gotta right there: Rezezezezezezezez. Fuckin’ guy!

jjtr023 | 11/2/2007, 12:28 pm EST

The Goo Goo Dolls formed back in 1986 and have never broke up. They have released 2 albums and many singles since 1998. They actually take time to reflect on their music instead pumping out horrible records every year. I think that it is funny that a person made fun of the spelling of his last name, it is Polish and it means “butcher” maybe that person should know know something about culture before commenting. It is not like he chose his last name…obviously you didn’t choose yours.

What? | 11/5/2007, 1:53 am EST

Reading threw some of these topics u don’t know what your talking about…

The goo goo dolls were orgianally a punk band called “sex maggots” they changed there name to get more gigs, as the goo goo dolls, they’ve been quite successful with the albums Gutterflower, Dizzy Up The Girl and more recently Let Love In which was realiesed within the last year.

John Rzeznik himself has written for other artists, and recorded songs for movies, such as “Still here” treasure planet theme. While experimenting and relaxing between albums, saying that his very on and off is kinda a insult, I believe that he works hard and deserves some credit.

Good Job John Rzeznik XD

What? | 11/5/2007, 2:22 am EST

ow forgot to mention John Rzeznik isn’t a Paul Westerberg hack, he acknowlages his influence on this work, and has co-wrote with him, on the “super star car wash album”

CAROL | 11/9/2007, 9:16 am EST

TO ME, JOHN RZEZNIK IS ONE OF THE MOSE HONEST, HARDWORKING PEOPLE IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS. HE IS NOT ALL ABOUT THE FAME, BUT HAS PRIDE IN HIS WORK. THAT MEANS ALOT IN TODAYS WORLD.

johnsidekick | 12/15/2007, 12:32 pm EST

Bla, bla, bla, who cares? John Rzeznik is a helluva of a musician and a mega hunk. The best in my world and he doesn’t need in yours….its all good!

dawn | 12/17/2007, 6:20 am EST

john you are so hot

Marty | 12/29/2007, 2:52 pm EST

Rzeznik is his real last name, he is being honest to his roots, coming from a working class Polish American neighborhood in Buffalo.

Alison | 2/23/2008, 2:52 pm EST

I met John 2 years ago and was so impressed with him. He is one of the most pure hearted souls I’ve met in a long time. I think this is just the beginnings of the wisdom that we will be hearing from John in the years to come.

robin | 3/18/2008, 9:48 pm EST

i read down this list and found some pretty stupid and uninformed comments. first off; big deal about how he spells his name. polish names are ALWAYS hard to say and spell! when i first got into ggd i pronounced both the z’s until i heard him say it but was glad he was proud to be who he was and kept his given name. jjtr023 needs to get more info about the band but at least has good taste! haven’t seen the show yet but i’m sure john is his honest true self and gives good advice on dealing with the ups and downs of the business.

miranda | 5/3/2008, 9:13 am EST

um, actually, the goo goo dolls last hit was in 2007. before it’s too late reached #7 on billboard top 200 singles.

I saw the next great american band show and I thought that john rzeznik is a freakin mega hunk and his band is awsome

sophie | 6/6/2009, 12:23 am EST

You guys have no right to make fun of him.If you never met him, how would you know anything about him? You have no idea if he’s a Pual Westerberg rip off or not unless you ask him, and even if you did he’d probably think that was a nasty question and not even answer it.Nobody would be that nasty to people in reality,so why do you think it’s fine if you type it instead? Seriously, does it make sense to go up to a random person and make fun of them when you barely even know them? Sure,Paul might have inspired/influenced some of his music, but don’t just assume he’s a rip-off.What’s the point of posting a nasty comment when it only makes you seem like a jerk?
