Perez Hilton — the subject of an Erik Hedegaard profile in the current issue of Rolling Stone — has made his name skewering the rich and famous on his infamous blog, but he’s becoming increasingly known for drawing attention to musicians, too (regular readers of his site know of his fondness for Amy Winehouse and the Gossip). We asked the proprietor of Hollywood’s most hated Web site for a list of artists he’s listening to right now, and he had no problem instantly naming ten favorites:
- Operator Please: “They’re this really, really cool band from Australia made up of sixteen, seventeen, eighteen-year-olds. They have this amazing female lead singer. I have a weak spot for female singers. They play lo-fi garage-punk pop, and they’re really amazing.”
- Ultraviolet: “They’re from Los Angeles. They’re super-fun, and great electro-pop. Female lead singer again, you may see a trend there.”
- Eric Hutchinson: “Bucking the trend though is this phenomenal soulful pop singer with a quirky sensibility. A lot of my taste might not be that mainstream, though I would love it to be mainstream, but this guy has the potential to be huge. He’s not only good on record, he’s amazing live. mark my words, Eric Hutchingson is going to be a huge superstar. He could fill a large, large, large venue, and he is just so rad.”
- Chester French: “They’re really fun. They live in LA now, but they met at Harvard, they just graduated. To me, they are kind of like a modern Weezer.”
- Robyn: “I think Robyn will do very well in America hopefully. I love that record of hers.”
- Meiko: “This girl I had perform at my concert in LA, she’s phenomenal. She’s a singer-songwriter, but more interesting. A little Rachel Yamagata-ish, but not really.”
- Yelle: “She’s French, sings in French, and does this amazing French electro-disco-pop, just killer stuff.”
- Jose Vanders: “She’s seventeen years old and phenomenal. She’s on that whole Regina Spektor tip, and she’s from the U.K.”
- Peaches: “She will always hold a special place in my heart. She rocks harder than anyone else!”
- Tori Amos: “Goddess. What else can I say?”
