Perez Hilton’s Playlist: What Hollywood’s Most Hated Man Is Listening To

10/18/07, 6:12 pm EST

Perez Hilton — the subject of an Erik Hedegaard profile in the current issue of Rolling Stone — has made his name skewering the rich and famous on his infamous blog, but he’s becoming increasingly known for drawing attention to musicians, too (regular readers of his site know of his fondness for Amy Winehouse and the Gossip). We asked the proprietor of Hollywood’s most hated Web site for a list of artists he’s listening to right now, and he had no problem instantly naming ten favorites:

  • Operator Please: “They’re this really, really cool band from Australia made up of sixteen, seventeen, eighteen-year-olds. They have this amazing female lead singer. I have a weak spot for female singers. They play lo-fi garage-punk pop, and they’re really amazing.”
  • Ultraviolet: “They’re from Los Angeles. They’re super-fun, and great electro-pop. Female lead singer again, you may see a trend there.”
  • Eric Hutchinson: “Bucking the trend though is this phenomenal soulful pop singer with a quirky sensibility. A lot of my taste might not be that mainstream, though I would love it to be mainstream, but this guy has the potential to be huge. He’s not only good on record, he’s amazing live. mark my words, Eric Hutchingson is going to be a huge superstar. He could fill a large, large, large venue, and he is just so rad.”
  • Chester French: “They’re really fun. They live in LA now, but they met at Harvard, they just graduated. To me, they are kind of like a modern Weezer.”
  • Robyn: “I think Robyn will do very well in America hopefully. I love that record of hers.”
  • Meiko: “This girl I had perform at my concert in LA, she’s phenomenal. She’s a singer-songwriter, but more interesting. A little Rachel Yamagata-ish, but not really.”
  • Yelle: “She’s French, sings in French, and does this amazing French electro-disco-pop, just killer stuff.”
  • Jose Vanders: “She’s seventeen years old and phenomenal. She’s on that whole Regina Spektor tip, and she’s from the U.K.”
  • Peaches: “She will always hold a special place in my heart. She rocks harder than anyone else!”
  • Tori Amos: “Goddess. What else can I say?”

I was listening to Eric Hutchinson on U-tube the other day, then afterwards , I was driving my car and listening to the radio. I heard a senational new guitar player named Jordan Rivers. They played is soon to be released CD, I guess the station was promoting it, but I was stunned at how good this guy is on guitar and how well he can sing. I did some searching online and found out some people consider him the next great guitar player from the USA.
I guess his CD will be released later in 2008, but this guy is world class level. He’s the next superstar.
But what I want to know is when is his album do out. I have got to get it.Anyone out there know?
Thanks Marky J. Blonfire

I’ve been a fan of Meiko, Hutchinson, and Robyn for awhile. Another artist that I love that isn’t on the list and that I would recommend checking out, is Joshua James.

“i want to preach a bit of all around tolerance across the Rolling Stone site. if you negative things to say about anyone, read something else”

Look at the guy with his ridiculous hair and the way he carries himself. He opens himself up to it. What a clown.

Shut up. People can say whatever the fuck they want. You sound like a real t**g*t a**!!!

Cecilia | 10/19/2007, 5:05 pm EST

i want to preach a bit of all around tolerance across the Rolling Stone site. if you negative things to say about anyone, read something else. i am certain those who hate this guy, or feel has no talent, well frankly you don’t know em’ nor do you know he is talentless. stop hatin’ as I say……..

Larry | 10/19/2007, 10:35 am EST

Who cares what Perez thinks/does/says. He’s a no-talent celebutante wannabe. Go home Perez! And stay there you hack!

SusanRockStar | 10/19/2007, 8:29 am EST

Meiko is more like a newer, more awesomer Suzanne Vega meets Feist with some Sheryl Crow mixed in and a sprinkle of Cat Power…oh and a dash of Patty Griffin!

JohnFamiglia | 10/19/2007, 8:21 am EST

Agreed on Meiko — just heard her song “Hawaii” in last night’s episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” and bought her album on iTunes — great stuff!! I think she’s actually MUCH more talented than Rachael Yamagata.

Rebbecca F | 10/19/2007, 8:04 am EST

Wow - great call on Meiko! This girl is RAD. She doesn’t have a record deal or anything either — props to Perez for supporting indie artists!

He probably painted a black eye on for the publicity.

georgia | 10/19/2007, 4:51 am EST

Im surprised he didn’t mention the white stripes considering how he defended meg during that fake sex tape scandal and dedicated a post to their last video. I tend not to bash people like perez, especially since people like jennifer aniston, spears, lindsay lohan, paris hilton and others absolutely bask in the attention.

Bukowski | 10/19/2007, 1:41 am EST

Wow, RRD, dig the new website design. God, I hope that black eye is real!!!!!! Hopefully David Duchovny and Ben Stiller are soon to follow!!!!!!!
It couldn’t have happened to a bigger asshole!!!!!!!

jingo | 10/19/2007, 12:06 am EST

Nancy: He got punched by someone and refuses to tell who done it. When asked by reporters he just changes the topic. Common belief seems to be that some celeb decided to vent their anger. I however, being cynical, is more prone to believe that he got it from a boyfriend and is playing mysterious just for the hype.

Nancy | 10/18/2007, 8:01 pm EST

What’s up with Perez’s eye?
