Michael Jackson Re-Releasing “Thriller,” Avoiding Bahrain

10/18/07, 1:03 pm EST

Hoping to resuscitate his sputtering career, Michael Jackson is reportedly returning to a reliable source: his own 1982 album Thriller. According to reports, Jackson plans to spruce up the 25th anniversary addition of the album by adding four remixes of Thriller tracks. Those lending a helping sequined gloved hand on the remixes for “Wanna Be Startin’ Something,” “The Girl Is Mine,” “Billie Jean,” and “P.Y.T.” are Kanye West, Akon, and Will.i.am. Additionally, Jackson’s music attorney Peter Lopez says four leftover tracks from the Thriller sessions will be featured. One of the songs, “Don’t Be Messin’ Around,” is hyped as “killer” by Jacko’s ex-producer Bruce Swedien. MJ might need the Thriller re-release to have similar success of the original, record-breaking release: Bahrain’s Prince Abdulla is allegedly suing Jackson for reneging on a contract that would have had Jackson release two albums, write an autobiography and produce a Broadway-esque show by the year 2012. After Jackson signed the contract in 2005, the Prince created 2Seas Records, built a studio and gave Jackson a $7 million advance. Jackson repaid the Prince by promptly leaving the country for Japan and never returning to the Mideast nation. In the lawsuit, Prince Abdulla is seeking to reclaim the advance he paid Jackson.

At least we know it’ll be a good album.

Jackson should be careful who he pisses off. As for the “Thriller 25th Edition” – it won’t revive his career – he’s got way too many negatives against him and totally out of public favor, by his own doings. He’s ran his course in the music business, it’s well over for him. “Thriller” was already reissued in a special edition a few seasons ago, and it’s also run out of gas.

This is proof of the unrescuable decadence of a show biz zombie; I hope the Prince really gets his goat, because this kind of irresponsible behavior cannot continue to go uncontested. This increasingly less human being is only fit for the garbage bin.

It’s like watching a B-movie based on “A Picture of Dorian Gray.” Way to stiff someone who came to his financial rescue. Hopefully, he’ll have to sell the Beatles catalog to someone who’ll do more than use it for crappy commercials…

*sigh* It would have been nice if he created something new, rather than rehash old stuff. I guess the unreleased tracks will be interesting to hear.

whatever | 10/19/2007, 4:10 pm EST

dude, for serious. why not new crap, and his rep. has nothing to do with his music nit wits. Thriller is great and all, but i am intrested to hear what Micheal will sound like on an album he made as a white man. no pun intended

DRW | 10/19/2007, 4:55 pm EST

I guess that when your career ends up in the trash, the only!!!! way to revive it is to get bigger names than yourself. I just hope he doesn’t stiff these people.

Michael | 10/20/2007, 2:50 am EST

It’s Michael, not Micheal. And don’t let it happen again!

“but i am intrested to hear what Micheal will sound like on an album he made as a white man. no pun intended ”

that’s not a pun. i don’t know what the hell it is (it sounds a racial slur, though). it’s not funny either. look up pun in the dictionary, hon!

Kanye West, Akon and Will.i.am are certainly successful at the moment, but they are not ‘bigger names’.
Michael Jackson is the biggest name in music. Sold more records than anyone else, broke musical world record upon world record for decades. The most successful solo artist of all time (yes, more successful than Elvis in terms of achievements, influence and sales).
Akon himself (not to mention Ne-Yo, Usger, Justin Timerfake, Chris Brown) models himself on Jacko. His career has taken a dive, but is achievements in music deserve to be remembered.

This re-relase is only an easy cash in and meant 2 create some good PR to pave the way for his new stuff that will be released in 2008.

None of my business but... | 2/26/2008, 4:43 pm EST

I know that Michael Jackson was huge for his entire life, almost breaking the millenium, but this album is worth Jack(o). Need a reason? Here’s a few : He lost a lot of support these past few years, he’s hard to keep track of and for the love of god its a re-release with 4 remixes. Not to mention that Fall Out Boy of all bands is releasing a live cover of “Beat It.”
Aside from all the ranting about the children, who I am assuming have probably never heard of our dear friend Mr. Jackson, trust me, I had to explain who he was on the South Park episode to my 15 year old brother.
This album will not save him, the children or the world.
I’m sorry, but someone has to look at this from the outside and logically.
Respect is given to Rolling Stone for writing a very objective article by simply reporting the news.
