Rivers Cuomo Talks Solo Work, New Weezer Album, Ice Cube

10/17/07, 10:47 am EST

As we told you yesterday, Rivers Cuomo will soon release a compilation of demos without his Weezer counterparts. Alone: The Home Recordings Of Rivers Cuomo 1992-2007 will hit aisles and digital shelves on December 12th. Following Cuomo’s surprise announcement via his personal MySpace blog, Rolling Stone’s Brian Hiatt spoke to Rivers regarding the demos and the latest news in Weezerland. According to Cuomo, the comp will have roughly “eighteen tracks, and it’s spanning my demo-making career from 1992 to 2007, and there is one Weezer classic, ‘Buddy Holly,’ my original demo for that song, and there’s a few covers.” One of the covers, we’re proud to reveal, will be of Ice Cube’s “The Bomb.” That was not a typo. Cuomo is apparently an AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted fan, but then again, who isn’t?

“In terms of the remaining tracks, “several of them are from my unfinished rock musical, Songs From the Black Hole,” Cuomo tells us. Black Hole, a space rock concept album, was initially supposed to be Weezer’s follow-up to their debut Blue record, but when the project came unglued, some of the tracks wound up in another form on Pinkerton, while the rest have been floating around for a while until Cuomo gathered them for this collection. But enough about yourself, Rivers, tell us about Weezer’s new album. “We’re done recording, and we’re just waiting to find a mixer. It’s very fresh and experimental,” Cuomo said. No word on what exact date the Rick Rubin-produced album will come out, but we stand by our initial Spring 2008 prediction.

“Yeah, coming from a knob like “anonymous”, that does’nt mean very much. He has a lot of issues himself, bitching about anything and everything. What a tool.”

He has a lot of issues himself? How can you tell? he just said he wasn’t a fan.

Bitching about anything and everything? Well, you seem to be.

What a tool? Well, I just won’t comment on that.

Check that you’re not actually taling about yourself before you post a response to somebody.

Weezer’s last outing with Rick Rubin was less than spectacular, hopefully this one will be better.

When I see that Rivers said the new album is “experimental”… that kind of scares me. It already made me sick to my stomach that Make Believe came packaged with stickers that said “back to the sound on their debut & Pinkerton”. It’s when bands make conscious efforts to sound a certain way that the albums turn out sounding unnatural, forced and insincere. I want Weezer to evolve naturally… not forcefully.

what are you?…kkk?

Ice Cube’s music was full of racism, misogyny, and brutal violence. If he was a white artist who had done these things, his career would be NOWHERE. Instead, Ice Cube does family films? What’s wrong with this picture?

SFTBH>SS2K Sessions>>Maladroit>>>>MB>Gree n

I’m looking forward to the demo.

And A6? Experimental? Well, certainly after they release it, we’ll be able to tell if Rivers is completely mental. Not that we don’t already know that. But we’ll know if he’s able to make logical assessments about his own work in terms of a somewhat objective characteristic.

I’m really excited for the SFTBH songs on the cd. Hopefully there are some new ones we haven’t heard before instead of the leaked ones.

Wish the material on the cd wouldn’t waste time on covers and just have unreleased/unleaked material IMHO…

Yeah Weezer fucked up their last album. “Beverly Hills” was not the best song, it was a never played song called “We Are All On Drugs” that they tried to clean up with we are all in love lyrics… didn’t work but I can still listen to the real version in my car every day.

Back at his final Boston solo show at TT the Bear’s, Rivers did an Ice Cube song during the into to Buddy Holly.

Nothing quite like hearing Rivers say the line “Getting hit in the chest like a shotgun”.

I really hope the B-side release thing works out for Cuomo. Overall, I’ve never been a huge fan of B-side albums. But, I REALLY enjoyed The Smashing Pumpkins B-side releases, especially “Pisces Iscariot”. I know a lot of people don’t like the Pumpkins, but… if you are a fan of their music, their B-side albums are just as good, if not better (to some) than their main releases.

The main thing that’s impressive about the Pumpkin’s B-siders though, is that from beginning to end, they are all completed recordings, that sound like a “real” song, and not just some crappy, incomplete demo.

Honestly - I have a lot of respect for Rick Ruben. He’s done a lot of good for a lot of bands in the past (Beastie Boys & RHCP to name a few). But… I have to say, though I’m a huge Weezer fan, I wasn’t a big fan of their last album with Ruben. I’ll listen to it & I don’t think it’s terrible, but I didn’t like it as much as their other albums up to that point. Same thing with Linkin Park… just not feelin’ their newest (Ruben co-produced) album. I don’t know if it’s him or the band, but these 2 bands didn’t really mesh with him that well, in my opinion.
