Springsteen Joined by Arcade Fire Members in Ottawa to Unearth “State Trooper”

10/15/07, 12:31 pm EST

Folks in Ottawa had something more to celebrate this weekend than their hockey team’s spot atop the NHL: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band brought their Magic show to Canada’s capital last night. During the six-song encore, the Arcade Fire’s Win Butler and Regine Chassagne, fresh from their NYC concert last weekend, unexpectedly joined Bruce and the E Streeters for a pair of songs. First up was “State Trooper,” from Nebraska, which Arcade Fire themselves had covered in the past. Springsteen’s live performance of “State Trooper” marked the first time that song had been played live by the E Street Band since the Born in the U.S.A. tour over twenty years ago. Next, Springsteen tried his hand at a cover of Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible track “Keep the Car Running,” (and surprisingly not the more Springsteen-esque “Antichrist Television Blues”), which marked the first time in over seven days that Arcade Fire performed “Keep the Car Running.” The Magic tour continues tonight in Toronto, and we’re already wildly speculating which Canadian will guest tonight during the encore. Feist maybe, or Alanis Morissette? Perhaps Godspeed You! Black Emperor? Check out a clip of “Keep the Car Running” after the jump.

Stevie Dee | 10/16/2007, 4:58 pm EST

WOW! That’s quite a team-up! “Keep the Car Running” is my all time favorite Arcade Fire tune…and the Boss is my all time favorite live performer. Two great tastes that taste great together!

what/?? | 10/16/2007, 4:06 pm EST

Are you kidding? There has never been a more Bruce song than “Keep the Car Running.”

Stink Palmer | 10/16/2007, 3:37 pm EST

A) This makes complete sense because I always thought that “Keep the Car…” was a complete rip off of an Eddie and the Cruisers song. And Eddie and the Cruisers were a complete rip off of Bruce and the E Streeters. Things have come full circle and i can now die happy.
B) Don’t be such a wuss about keeping the video up if you don’t get credit. If you’re half the fan that you sound like you are on the clip you’d just be happy to be able to share the experience with others.

As Stan Lee says, ’nuff said.

Jughead | 10/16/2007, 3:22 pm EST

What? The Boss allowed the husband and wife team of the Arcade Fire to join Him on stage? That’s really saying something. That means the Arcade Fire are actually “cool” to be allowed their presence with the almighty Boss! Really amazing! Think of that..Arcade Fire sharing the same stage as The Bruce! I mean, damn, I don’t know…I may have to raise up the Arcade Fire a few ranks higher on my list of favorite bands because The Bruce approves of them! Man, unreal! Same stage, Whheww.

Tyler | 10/16/2007, 3:18 pm EST

Bruce is not the man !!He’s a rich man who doesn’t know what he’s talking about !! He’s the leader of fools !! Blind man walking !

thedude | 10/16/2007, 2:31 pm EST

I was there. Awesome.
I was standing outside gate 3 before the show and then Win walks up with wife and few other people. I’m a huge Arcade Fire fan and was in total awe, and then I was even more shocked that nobody around even recognized who was standing right beside us! Never imagined they hop on stage with the E-Street band!
Unreal show!

Proud Police Officer: does your insurance cover mental health treatments? You should look into it before you kill somebody…

Idiot Poilce Officer | 10/16/2007, 12:08 pm EST

You’re scum. Springsteen is more relevant to society than you.

Proud Police Officer | 10/16/2007, 12:03 pm EST

Springsteen-talentless idiot. Should be beheaded just like Daniel Pearl. That would symbolize the axing of no-talent stars. Bruce Springsteen=Britney Spears of Rock.

sam | 10/16/2007, 11:36 am EST

That was fantastic, I wish I could have been there… I’m envious of you..

Jungleland | 10/16/2007, 8:31 am EST

Very cool. I will pick up their CD now that I have The Boss’ seal of approval.

that’d be totally amazing if GodspeedYOu!BlackEmperor went up with springsteen.

absolutely inappropriate and it’d be terrible… but the fact two of my favorite artists tried something together would be amazing.
which makes arcade fire/the boss collabo so good.

elliott | 10/15/2007, 10:30 pm EST

i was just thinking the other day how perfect it would be to see the Boss in the midst of the Arcade Fire.

Sid | 10/15/2007, 9:35 pm EST

I was there. A moment I will always remember, Win Seemed to be in total shock sharing the stage with his hero and for good reason..The legendary E Street Band was backing him up!

Jeff C | 10/15/2007, 7:31 pm EST

chpl | 10/15/2007, 4:21 pm EST

Hey Ryan - does DailyMotion not let you set up the videos so they are not embeddable? That way at least they’d have to link to the video and you’d get the credit…

to ryantheduke | 10/15/2007, 3:58 pm EST

The credit on the video is DailyMotion… it’s at the end of teh story. Is that not right?

Wendy | 10/15/2007, 3:46 pm EST

You know the killers are green with envy right now.

ryantheduke | 10/15/2007, 3:21 pm EST

not to sound rude, but please give us credit or take the videos down.

Chris | 10/15/2007, 2:38 pm EST

ryantheduke | 10/15/2007, 1:53 pm EST
