Queens of the Stone Age Talk Radiohead, VMAs, Playing a Salt Mine (Plus Bonus Six-Pack Q&A)

10/15/07, 6:59 pm EST

When Rock Daily caught up with Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme and Joey Castillo backstage at the Theater at Madison Square Garden Saturday night, the pair were game to offer their take on the news of the week (Radiohead’s big release, R.E.M. debuting a song on CNN), reveal some plans for the Desert Sessions and Eagles of Death Metal and re-live the wonder of the VMAs, where they performed alongside Foo Fighters. But when it came to our Six-Pack Q&A, the duo were skeptical. Click above to check out the video interview — where they also explain why they’re playing a German salt mine in November — and read on for even more.

What’s the most rock-star thing you’ve ever done?

Josh Homme: Not answer that fucking question. That ain’t a good question because it’s so incriminating. Nothing personal, but fuck that question.

Who’s the coolest person you’ve ever met?

Homme: I think a better question is who’s the most famous person you’ve ever boned. I can’t answer that question either, though. If this were a six-pack, it would be a six-pack of Zima. Or Tequiza. Or Mike’s Hard Lemonade.

What was your favorite album when you were fourteen?

Homme: This is a good question. Someone slipped a Corona in the six-pack. Discharge, Never Again.

Joey Castillo: The Pistols, Never Mind the Bullocks.

What’s on your current playlist?

Homme: I like the Sound of Silver, LCD Soundsystem; the Black Angels were on tour with us and we’re listening to their record, and the new Liars record is awesome. [RS points out that they’ve basically plugged their opening bands.]

Castillo: A good plug would be the new Queens and Eagles of Death Metal.

Homme: So Black Angels is more like a hair plug.

When do you think you’ll know it’s time to retire?

Castillo: When the drugs are gone.

Homme: The last hit? That’s when I retire for the evening, is that what you meant? Do you retire from your religion. Some do. Well, we’re not going to. People don’t have to buy it, I guess, but we’re going to keep going.

What else is new in Homme-land?

Homme: My favorite color now is rouge, which is a style of red. We’ve probably got six or seven [new Eagles of Death Metal songs recorded] in the heartland of America, in what we call the butter guts of American. It’s all the Eagles that you know and love, plus extra, and I don’t want to say what we stacked on top of it because I want you to have the happiness of a New Years’ Eve pie fight when you hear it.

why does EVERY QOTSA thread have to turn into a debate between S/T and E.V.? It gets so boring. Everyone knows S/T rules, you don’t have to say it. And if you don’t love E.V. why the hell are you still reading every article and flaming the comments? On the other hand, what I love about QOTSA threads is “Go listen to your albums”. I’ll say….mmmm….Hoobastank??

Kyuss | 11/11/2007, 7:53 pm EST

please queens of the stone age come to mexico please!!!!!!!!

VanPoop | 11/8/2007, 3:20 am EST

How can you be disappointed with Era Vulgaris? It’s in keeping with the mind altering feelings like the rest of the albums. I do have to say that if another fantasy candyland album like Lullabies comes out, then little kids will be able to play with sail boats in my undies for ages.

Duder | 11/7/2007, 11:04 pm EST

I love QOTSA. Their latest album WAS disappointing though, I’ll agree with that. Pop in their self titled CD and than Rated R. Rated R, it wouldn’t be a stretch to call that a “perfect album”. Then listen to Era Vulgaris and it’s kind of sad. It is not that the album is particularly bad, it’s just that it sounds to me, like other shit you’ll find on the radio. That, and I’ll actually say it sounds unoriginal. The band is starting to sound like it is imitating itself.

I guess not every album can be a great one. Still looking forward to seeing QOTSA perform live, once again.

“when the drugs run out” christ, queens is the tits. always has been, always will be. the new cd may not be as good (in my opinion, of course) as sftd, rated R, or the S/T, but it’s still better than 98% of the new music out there, and 100% better than anything you will hear on the radio.

number 1 fan | 11/5/2007, 12:28 am EST

First off, youre all a bunch a douchebags. the music is there for you to bob your head and get fucked up. if you dont get fucked up, then shut the fuck up.

Naz-T | 11/3/2007, 11:29 pm EST

Era Vulgaris is addictive and an album that grows on you. If you pop in a cd and your singing along the melodies and know the whole fucking album the 2nd time you hear it, its a piece of shit. This album is complex and orchestrated. I would say yes, different from there other material but they keep it good and original. If you don’t like it then your not a fan of the band and not a fan or Josh’s and CO creativity, and quite frankly you suck. So you should go listen to Lincoln Park (yes i mispelled that on purpose) and listen to the same old yelling and then wannabe rapper shit. I’m out.

Me | 11/2/2007, 12:39 pm EST

The new albums different, different is good. Music has a persistant tendancy to suck these days. QOTSA however, don’t.

screw you buddy | 11/1/2007, 5:09 pm EST

how could you not be sarcastic when talking to some RS hack “journalist”.
love live the Queens!

VanPoop | 11/1/2007, 4:32 pm EST

You know, I saw them at MSG, and I only wish that doinking sounds was possible. Having the muscial phallus of QOTSA ram my completely willing hooty would make me swoon. I’m gonna whine, pout, scream, kick, and moan under the slappity slap of their fat full balls. Somebody needs to figure this crap out. It’s entirely possible to make it happen with all the technology that’s out there.

A lost art | 10/31/2007, 6:06 pm EST

QOTSA isint bone head dumb ass bang yer head rock….its smart. If yer too dumb to listen to it then just move on to some avenged sevenfold or something totaly pussy like that.

anomaly519 | 10/31/2007, 12:25 pm EST

ok, the new reocrd is amazing. and josh has always been that way. hes not full of himself, he just has a very sarcastic sense of humor.

wellwhat? | 10/31/2007, 10:37 am EST

You know, it really erks me that Josh has become so full of himself, rude and disrespectful. He has completely forgotten who got him where he is, US and the “famous” people he knows. I’ve worked with the man multipule times, and can just see his addiction to drugs and alcohol is completely eating away at him, I just pray to God he gets it one day.

Monsters in the toilet bowl | 10/31/2007, 8:28 am EST

Sadly with each passing day I find myself liking Queens’ old stuff better than their new stuff. That old saying. When did I get so old?

Monsters in the toilet bowl | 10/31/2007, 8:26 am EST

Poop.

thefunkywitch | 10/31/2007, 6:59 am EST

I wonder if Dennis the Menace is one of these people who REALLY MISSES NICK?

Still, we’re all entitled to our opinions, even if i think his is wrong.

Good interview, wish i could go to the salt mine, sounds fab!

The Beaver | 10/17/2007, 12:28 am EST

Dennis, you’re a no nonsense bloak!!! I tip a pint to you, sir.

Sick, Sick, Sick | 10/16/2007, 9:57 pm EST

Dennis the Menace | 10/16/2007, 6:00 pm EST

New Queens album is just Shite.. One listen and threw it out the window @ 65 mph. Worst 14 bucks i spent. They should look into doing that Radiohead pricing thing…

Tommy | 10/16/2007, 1:47 pm EST

corporate!

qotsaluva | 10/16/2007, 12:09 pm EST

long live jho and all his glorious sarcasm

ugkf23 | 10/16/2007, 10:46 am EST

Typical JHo sense of humor. Why we love him.

Josh W. | 10/16/2007, 9:29 am EST

Josh and Joey are right on throughout the whole interview. they might be sarcastic about being serious but theirs also a seriousness to the sarcasti-city if you know what I mean. And Josh is right there should be more record stores around these days. Theres nothing better than going to the electric fetus by my place in Mpls and cruising the isles for hours looking for old skip james records and trying to figure out where the industry and “rock n roll” went wrong. Keep the weird fantasies and the ear gasms going boys. Fan forever- JW

Jeff | 10/16/2007, 3:32 am EST

I’m always happy when there’s a new QOTSA interview…never a non-sarcastic moment.

hokeycoke | 10/16/2007, 12:40 am EST
