In reference to classic rock listener / Nirvana fan topic:
I honestly respect your opinion, but I don’t buy your “open mind” explanation. You’d literally have to go back in time prior to the early 90’s and really get into the underground music scene, to understand and appreciate alt-rock music (I’m referring to Nirvana, and quite a number of other alternative bands which were around ‘before’ they broke through into mainstream). The corporate world tainted those bands with commercial exploitation - that’s how mainstream listeners were introduced to alt-rock music (which in its truest sense of the word was a pure and raw artform). If alt music had not reached wide audiences, I’d be willing to bet that the majority of mainstream classic rock listeners would not have ever heard of bands like Nirvana to this day. You’re either a non-mainstreamer or an “after-the-fact” wanna-be. That’s a humble opinion…from a former college art student who hung out with punkers and eccentric creative-types.

I hope that my comment is not offensive (don’t take my opinion personally). I just cannot comprehend how a classic rock music listener could possibly be a “true” Nirvana fan. It’s as if all of the maintream music listeners only like Nirvana because they became popular on the top 40 rock charts (due to their “unexpected” success), and then suddenly everybody decided to jump on the bandwagon because it was the cool thing to do. If you were listening to underground alternative music back in the 80’s (and I was listening to a lot of relatively unknown non-maintream alt-rock bands before they became household names), then I would believe your credibility. Nirvana was about the punk rock attitude, and honestly, I don’t know why I am bothering to comment at these blogs - corporate mainstream top 40 classic rock (although some of it is undeniably great) is not my first preference or scene as a music listener. I’ve said my peace.

Oh Steve Van Z. I’m 48. Saw him first in ‘78, and over 50 times since. Moreover, I promise, i’m as knowledgable on the history of rock and popular music and its critical heights as you are, frankly, more so. I won’t rip all your comments. There are grains of truth. But you confuse personal taste with artisitic criticism. Indeed Bruce has a heavy “pop” influence that seems like it probably doesn’t work for your tastes. That’s fine. He also, admittedly, has never driven his music with individual musicianship. Nils, for instance, is an a-list guitarist, but one wouldn’t know it from a Springsteen concert. If these things contribute to your personal tepid response, you’re welcome to your opinion. I have many friends, who’s musical tastes i greatly admire (including a well established blues guitarist in the clapton/allman mode) who are not Bruce fans. I begrudge them nothing.
However, don’t kid yourself, few popular artists of any era or any genre have been better live performers than this man. That’s fact…not opinion. And I notice you refer to, but do not name anyone from your laundry list. I’ve seen most of the major live acts over the last 40 years (stones, led zep, the brothers, the dead, the who, U2, floyd, etc). As a natural performer, as an artist who reaches across and makes a deep connection with his audience, NONE accomplish on stage what Bruce does. That connection is as good a measure of a great performance as any you can find.
Beyond that a blog is simply not the place to truely explain why he IS a great songwriter and a great artist…even if your taste in music doesn’t allow you to appreciate it. I often tell people that i have no interest in opera…but i’m smart enuf to know that luciano pavaroti is great.

Jake, that’s totally cool. Music of course is subjective, I like stuff others don’t & so on. I guess I felt, even not being a big Bruce fan, that the Born in the USA album was a bit of a sell out, even to his fans, but I guess not. He just seemed more ballsier(for lack of better word) previous to that. It seemed very mainstream, in particular Glory Days. I too am your age, & can appreciate that sentiment, but delivered in that song, seems almost like a Hallmark card, too contrived, right down to the video. Again, I’m not saying this rudely, as Clever Level seems to allude to. I think Bruce wouldn’t mind someone criticizes his music,(though he a major critical darling) adult or teen. Again, I don’t care about the message if the song doesn’t grab me. I ask respectfully, Clever Lever, do you like the songs on lyrics if you don’t like the tune? Nor do I think he’s a musical messiah, what he thought if he read this is irrelevent. I too am new at this bloggin’, was a bit overboard initially, but I think I’m being respectful to the fact people like him & its all opinion. What makes you happy is great!…but I have many bands I love that have completely sold out & its a bummer. Bruce didn’t do that. He actually stripped it back down after BITUSA….I also don’t find the Doors keyboards cheesy. Ha!…and I don’t live in the 60’s-90’s, have tried to keep up. But that’s neither here nor there, I just was simply stating that I found Bruce to be overrated as both performer & songwriter. I definitely enjoy the debate. Even some of the hard core fans didn’t find Born in USA a bit of a sellout album at all? The cover, the new pumped up look, real pollished poppy songs that were never his calling card. Glory days video isn’t a bit over the top cutesy? again, I say this respectfully…Jake & all, I’d be curious to see what your other say 5 favorite artists/bands are off the top of your head? Just curious, not being mean spirited.
Jake | 10/17/2007, 8:34 pm EST
Steve Z, I usually don’t reply to these blogs, I read them every know and then for kicks but I wanted to adress what you wrote about Glory Days. I was 19 when that song came out and it was a fun song. It was great to see it performed live it was one of those songs that got the entire audience pumped. But now at 42 when I hear the song the lyrics make sense. When I meet up with my old friends every few years or so we talk about all of those old times. We talk about the sports teams we played on. I think at some point everyone thinks back about thier Glory Days. That song hit on something that most people feel. As for your remark about the “Cheesy organ” in the song could you not say the same thing about just about every Doors song recorded? If it works it works and for Springsteen and many artist it works. Keep on Rockin

Bruuuuue !
A quick comment to the other Bruce fans…stop all this chilish name-calling and insulting of those who don’t like Bruce. It’s their loss , and we all have our own opinions, and they are just that …opinions ! Why are you so threatened by some-one elses negative remarks ? They do NOT affect you or your love of Bruces music. Life is too short. It’s pretty arrogant to think your personal choices are better or more intellligent.
I am guessing that Bruce would just cringe at so called open-minded intelligent adults who go online with these ” I Know you are but what am I?” comments. No-one has the right to impose their opinions on another as fact. I live this way and find I am more content , and have learned more , than before. Live and let live. I think that life would be pretty boring with no possibility for growth , in any way , if we all were the same and agreed on everything. Grow up and enjoy the music ! Those of you that are so wound up about those others who do not connect with Bruces music as we do - I dont think you REALY listened to his message because you seem to have adopted the very arrogant traits that he has written about. Are you truly a fan ? Or just needing to argue ?
Gloria's Eyes | 10/17/2007, 6:20 pm EST
Steve Van Z,
Your post reads as though you are stuck in the 90’s. The world has changed, R&R has changed. Bruce has changed. He writes about what is relevant in our country today. He writes about human experiences. The music may be basic rock, nothing experimental or new here, but it sure does the job in getting the message across!

Rock Critic, all wise cracks aside, I think that’s admirable that Bruce writes on relevant, important topics. I don’t think all should, its rock n roll, but in the spirit of the 60’s, its cool some do.(I could be spared Bono & Michael Stipe’s political views, I like my rockers destroying the world with rock, not trying to save it, leave it for someone else). Bruce indeed has the spirit of Rock as well, I can appreciate that. He has a lighter side too, which is cool…but, while the lyrics can add greatly to a song, you have to have a great song as a vehicle or I’d rather hear a rocker about a car. Born in the USA for instance, I realize this isn’t an ode to the US, its a biting commentary, but the song is rock light, driven by cheesy keyboards…am I the only one here. No, it doesn’t have to be blazing guitars, I appreciate lots of lighter music, but for a Major act, I don’t get the fuss over his stage show(I saw him in the 90’s), or his song writing. He’s influence by Dylan, his song writing side, & old style Mitch ryder rock, or Roy Orbison, I can appreciate both the song writing there & the base rock that gets your hips shakin’. Bruce takes those elements & to me, waters them down. It seems big Bruce fans like Bruce, & other real safe acts like Dave Mathews. Real pallibe music for the masses. Clean cut boys you could bring home to mom & their music doesn’t suggest any different. Bad covers showing his butt with the flag. Where’s the edge? I’d like to see Courtney Cox jump on stage with the Stones in their prime, or Zep, she would have been kidnapped behind the amps, never to be seen til morning. that’s rock n roll…what did you interview him for, that’s exciting.(seriously).

this will be a hard time, having to deal with the Boss in the news all the time. Though in Boston, new music from classic rock artist really don’t get played on the stations here, maybe adult contemporary stations. I’m sure I’ll hear the songs on a Dodge Truck commerical, or a Levi’s commercial. he’s such a cowboy, from Jersey & all. Telling his hack stories in that faux effected voice, lamenting how his daddy made him cut his hair, but he said no etc…the drummer Max, my God, really, most annoying Ringo wanna-be. We know, you’re into it. Van Zant, let’s see what’s really under that scarf, it must smell wretched. Or maybe he has a sweat band in it? Do they turn him up at all. Glory Days, just an organ, yet SVZ & Bruce are chogging along on silent guitars. Its glorified Mitch Ryder in the detriot Wheels. Soccer Mom music. Cutesy, pulling Cortney cox out of the audience. ahh…come on, ROCK!! Or give me some real edgy acoustic stuff, tunnel of love, I’m on fire, clickity clack track. Jungleland. Rock me, you claim to have rocked a thousand faces…oh, that’s his buddy JBJ…Respectfully,
Steve Van Zant.

Absolutely Bruce. As a major music critic for a major daily newspaper in a top 5 city, nice to see RS place Bruce on the cover. I interviewed Bruce several weeks ago before the Philly shows. An incredible musician and lyrisist. So few of todays muscicians write music that is thought provoking while being able to apppeal to masses with catchy pop hooks.
For you Bruce bashers that obviously take aim at him because of what he sings about, I suggest you look at what is behing his music. We should hail those that speak about what is important in today’s society. There is nothing more American than that!!

Bruce, the Manager in Training(the Boss indeed!), showing his 6th grade fashion sense. Where’s his jello bracelet?…This attire does not conjure up the image of a Boss. You want to add flair, you need to make it sing, part Barnum & Bailey, part Joe Namath. But I’ve always been more Tarzan than Singer. I sense a musician who was born to jog, in place. Bruce, Mellencamp & Seger are all in a room at the Chevy headquarters commissioned to write tunes of Apple Pie & tough trucks. Bruce says “Flame” and only a few sparks come forth.

People, this Van Halen tour is infectious. These are the same songs you’ve been hearing at the local Motorola on a Saturday morning for the last 25 summers, that’s more invasive than any download. It would be a sin to not serve them up piping hot, sword in one hand, torch in the other. That VH logo is a familiar as the Nike Swoosh. You got some young blood corsing through the band in Wolfgang, the DNA is evident. The attitude’s intact, the lines are still there, & THE singer is back in the fold, Sammy was A singer. We’re coming to the very suburbs that cut down trees & name streets after them. I’m sure you’ve been there. Come see some real heat off the stage, Bruce couldn’t keep pace for one lap. Let’s look out past the hood ornament, come see a band that will throw a thunderbolt in your Cheerios. Maybe you’ll see Bruce there taking notes.

I’ve incited a riot, good stuff…Child, no, 41. Saw him live in ‘99 in Denver. Granted, not his heyday. I’d been told for years, incredible performer, man is a ball of energy…I was thoroughly disappointed in that regard, I could give a laundry list of better, more energic performers. WHere should I start?(not that running around makes a great show, but it was standard)…the songs, that of course is subjective. I do like some stuff, pre-Born in the USA(just a rubbish album), the River has some cool rockers, I like some of the edgier acoustic stuff, but most of it seems so safe, bland. He so wants to be Dylan. As far as caputuring the American soul of rock, I think Petty did a better job of that, & left the sax at home. Bruce & Johnny Cougar play on the same ballfield now. Chevy Truck commercial music, Tunnel of Love etc. ZZZ. Come on! It’s almost Christmas, we’ll get ot hear Santa’s coming to town. yikes….and Rolling Stone, continuously playing it safe putting retro rockers on the cover. In their defense, there’s not much worthy to put on the cover today though. Maybe I’m getting old.

Dane Cook. Rolling Stone has long since forgotten how to spotlight musical artists on their covers, so I forsee a long article about how Dane Cook MIGHT be dating Jessica Alba.
Jacob | 10/16/2007, 12:35 pm EST
I guess you have to be from the eighties to get a cover. Grow up RS
Sanchez | 10/16/2007, 12:20 pm EST
Eddie Vedder/Sean Penn?

It’s slash
DeadHorse | 10/16/2007, 11:23 am EST
I second the comment about the Kid Rock cover being nauseating. What a tool. RS are a bunch of tools for putting such a tool on their front cover.
Jughead | 10/16/2007, 11:20 am EST
RS gave the new piece of shit CD Springsteen just released a 5 star rating so Springsteen owes it to RS to give them an interview. So that would be Bruce “Ain’t My Boss” Springsteen.

MegaSudz | 10/16/2007, 10:31 am EST
That is BRUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCEEEEEEEEEE
David | 10/16/2007, 10:31 am EST
Springsteen should have been on the cover of the last issue (instead of Kid Rock).
Radiohead should be on the cover of this issue.

Kevin | 10/16/2007, 3:44 am EST
This couldn’t have come at a better time with Bruce on the cover. A great rock & roll tour underway, with a 5 star album!
Anonymous | 10/16/2007, 2:59 am EST
i may be the only 21 year old
who is sure this is Springsteen
and couldn’t be any happier!!!
:-)
after crappy covers of kid rock, maroon 5, fall out boy, some teen from disney?, etc.. they needed to pay their due with a true american rock icon who has been churning out great albums in the last 5 years.
friend | 10/16/2007, 1:21 am EST
the boss. what when are they going to put the foo on the cover?!!
JD | 10/16/2007, 1:18 am EST
It’s Bruce for sure. If you saw the group picture inside the Magic album, it looks like he’s wearing that bracelet that we see above.
Georgia | 10/16/2007, 12:58 am EST
who cares anymore? rolling stone consistently has the worst covers, puts unimportant musicians like kid rock on the cover, teeny bopper idols like zack efron on the cover. what a sad far cry from the golden age of rolling ston.e

BRUCE IS GOD
JoeLevyisHot | 10/15/2007, 10:28 pm EST
Put M.I.A. on the cover!
BurtBacharach | 10/15/2007, 10:26 pm EST
Rolling Stone claims putting celebrated rock figures on the cover will, in fact, boost sales. In my opinion, I thinking putting a new, fresh face on the cover will boost the sales. If it’s Bruce Springsteen, I’m not surprised–probably some long drivel on his political beliefs and struggle to become an epic artist. If I’m wrong, discard everything I just said. If they put Radiohead on the cover, their sales would double that of a nonchalant face.
Joe | 10/15/2007, 9:55 pm EST

Tricky Dick | 10/15/2007, 8:45 pm EST
Has Bruce ever been on the cover before?
I didn’t think he was one of RS’s favorites.
Ryan B | 10/15/2007, 8:33 pm EST
BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE!
Matt | 10/15/2007, 8:28 pm EST
Thats Bruce for sure. I love him, hes the greatest ever!
It's not Radiohead. | 10/15/2007, 8:20 pm EST
It’s kind of depressing that Rolling Stone has no faith in any modern artist to sell its magazine.
I like Bruce (or whoever) more than the next guy, but this is a two-way street, RS!
You get what you give! The love you take…and all that crap.
Promote someone (anyone!) new.
Fanks.
Grand | 10/15/2007, 7:46 pm EST
I know that they’ve been on more covers than they probably should, but the first issue after Radiohead lob what might be the most damaging salvo in the war against the ever consolidating record industry giants, they should get the cover.
But this is Rolling Stone, so its probably Bruce Springsteen, or maybe they will continue the bringing back of nu metal that they began with Kid Rock. Staind, Disturbed, or Puddle of Mudd?
Kinda Ready | 10/15/2007, 7:38 pm EST

RS where are the new artists with new ideas?
Peaches, M.I.A., Goldfrap etc.
We miss you RS.
HH | 10/15/2007, 6:05 pm EST
given how the last guess the cover thing went and how clued into the times rs was with kid rock, i’m wouldn’t be surprised if it’s another currently hot musician like fred durst or kip winger
shaun | 10/15/2007, 6:05 pm EST
“huck”?
Mike Huckabee!

Doc | 10/15/2007, 5:54 pm EST
Springsteen — that’s an easy one. Now maybe someday John Mellencamp will get on the cover since he’s, you know, every bit the songwriter Springsteen is.
David | 10/15/2007, 5:51 pm EST
I think it is Bruce Springsteen.
Hey Rolling Stone -
I’m still nauseated that Kid Rock made the cover for a SECOND Time.
It’s funny how RS insults MTV.
It is like Carson Daly calling Ryan Seacrest lame.
Esteban | 10/15/2007, 5:51 pm EST
bruce..
