Woman Chokes on Someone Else’s Vomit

On 7 March 2002, the Saskatoon StarPhoenix in Saskatchewan, Canada, citing witnesses inside the Pine Grove Correctional Centre, reported that some female ex-heroin addicts so desperately crave methadone that they routinely consume the fresh vomit of fellow inmates currently on methadone treatment because enough is still present in the regurgitation. The newspaper uncovered the practice while investigating the death of an inmate. Said a source, “The whole building knows (that the inmate choked on vomit). That’s how she died.” —from News of the Weird, compiled by Chuck Shepherd

I mentioned “Miles Runs the Voodoo Down” for three reasons.

1. It’s fusion; not traditional jazz. And it probably should receive credit for starting that movement.

2. Bitches Brew is listed as one of Rolling Stone Magazine’s greatest albums.

3. You are right. It would wipe this field clean. The “Jack Johnson” album’s “Right Off” also deserves mention.

Dracula | 10/13/2007, 6:21 pm EST

Okay, so I did think of one that’s actually halfway decent. In fact, it’s damn good.

“Chest Fever” as performed live by the Band. Or, actually, by keyboardist Garth Hudson. Live, the intro from the version on “Music From Big Pink” became huge epic and awesome. Makes you feel like you’re being run down by dogs at the crossroads.

So “Chest Fever” and “Lick My Love Pump” are the only two rock instrumentals you’ll ever need. Oh btw good call on whoever mentioned Miles Runs The Voodoo Down. But if we’re going to hook this up with jazz instrumentals too, that gives us encyclopedias full of instrumentals that could wipe the floor with any of the rock instrumentals mentioned here. Rock adn roll simply is not a forum for the instrumental. Goes against the grain.

Jason Moss | 10/13/2007, 6:19 pm EST

If you’re going to choose a Santana tune, it has to be Samba Pa Ti; I would definitely include Rush’s YYZ, especially after seeing that stadium full of Brazilian fans “singing” the riff with the band on the Rush in Rio DVD; Link Wray’s Rumble; The Allmans’ In Memory of Elizabeth Reed…
But the absolute number one greatest is Jimi Hendrix’s third Stone From the Sun.

Dracula | 10/13/2007, 6:07 pm EST

Y’all take this topic too damn seriously. Unless you’re Bob Dylan, rock and roll songs shouldn’t be longer than 4 minutes, let alone not have words. Well, at least no one’s mentioned ELP (and good Lord let’s keep it that way). Down with the self-indulgent instrumental/solo!

Metallica - Orion. This song is beautiful

Zeppelin - Bron yr aur. I think it’s better than black mountain side, but if you include that you should have white summer/black mountain side - the extended version. sounds even better.
