Single Minded: Missy Elliott Tribute, Maroon 5 Live, Thom Yorke, R.E.M and Joy Division Covers

10/12/07, 10:14 am EST

Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more.

Missy Elliott Medley [Live Tribute]
Eve, Timbaland, Nelly Furtado and Ciara all pay homage to Misdemeanor at last week’s VH1 Hip-Hop Honors. Though he wasn’t onstage at the time, Lupe Fiasco still forgot the words.

Maroon 5, “Wake Up Call” [Live Session]
Let’s see: Adam Levine catches his girlfriend with another man, shoots said paramour, then threatens his lover with similar physical violence. From them it plays like “Handsome Man With Dark Edges.” But if this was an Ice Cube song, it would be responsible for destroying the fabric of our culture. Go figure.

Thom Yorke, “The Eraser” [XXXChange Remix]
What’s this guy been up to lately? Just kidding. We know.

You Say Party We Say Die!, “Nightswimming” [R.E.M. Cover]
British group turns R.E.M. ballad into a lovely, hushed electro track, making it somehow prettier than the original.

Jah Division, “Heart & Soul” [Joy Division Cover]
What that Anton Corbijn movie might be like if it starred Big Youth and tons and tons of ganja.

That “Nightswimming” cover prettier than the original? Um, no. The phrasing timed to the drum machine screws the song up too.
