Hot Issue Hits and Misses: Nas and Cory Branan

10/12/07, 5:55 pm EST

Rolling Stone’s 2008 Hot Issue spotlights acts like Band of Horses and Vampire Weekend (more on that here). All week, we’ve been taking a look at Hot Issue hits and misses from the past twenty-one years (because nobody’s cultural thermometer is accurate all the time).

Hit: “A savior,” we called him. “The hip-hop Proust.” Whatever insane expectations we placed on Nas, the Hot Rapper of 1994, he’s lived up to them. He’s since feuded with Jay-Z and somehow survived, he married the girl who’s milkshake brings all the boys to the yard (Kelis), and he’s one of the few rappers who has credibility enough to claim Hip Hop Is Dead. Unfortunately, Nas’ hotness didn’t rub off on his 1994 Hot List page 64 neighbor, Hot Athlete/Baltimore Orioles Jeffrey Hammonds, who finished his disappointing baseball career in 2005 after playing for six teams over the course of twelve years.

Miss: In his 2002 Hot Singer-Songwriter write-up, we (and his Wikipedia page) had the audacity to mention Cory Branan in the same sentence as peers Ryan Adams and Bright Eyes. Branan’s The Hell You Say lead to appearances on David Letterman, Carson Daly and our Hot List, but it would be another four years before Branan’s sophomore album 12 Songs was released to little fanfare. Branan also probably wins the award for Hot Lister with the smallest MySpace following (7,458 fans as of right now).

As far as I’m concerned, Cory Branan is a major hit, not a miss. RS readers, don’t let this article confuse you, Cory is still out there touring and causing mayhem, as per usual. If RS had done their research they’d know that 12 Songs was released 2 years after it had been finished, not to the fault of Mr.Branan. He is now under new, and wonderful, management and will be recording a new album in January. If you want to see and know what Cory is really up to see him at one of his shows because he’s been touring a lot lately. I am very proud of the songwriter that he has become and if RS would get their heads out of their asses and actually go to shows or find and download bootlegs to hear the new songs they’d hear the progression that he has made. And as for 12 Songs as an album, I think that it’s amazing. It takes songs that die hard fans, like myself, know already and puts a whole new spin on them. This CD was well worth the wait.

The difference between Cory Branan and what RS would call a ‘hit’ is that Cory is an artist, and does not focus on commercial appeal. He has not sold out, I guess if he did, RS took the time to understand the artist and know the energy and love he brings to the stage, and the American populous appreciated real art, we would probably see that crazy Irish man on the cover of the Rolling Stone. Don’t write him off too soon.

Okay, whoever at Rolling Stone THINKS they know what a “hit” is needs to be moved back to the mailroom and leave Cory to his genius. Cory Branan is an incredibly unique, creative artist unlike 90% of the other ‘hits’ anyone plays lately. Please keep your dumb comments to the bathroom stall…grow up and get some real taste.
