Hot Issue Hits and Misses: “OK Computer” and “Cockamamie”

10/11/07, 7:29 pm EST

Rolling Stone’s 2008 Hot Issue spotlights acts like Band of Horses and Vampire Weekend (more on that here). For the next week, we’ll be taking a look at Hot Issue hits and misses from the past twenty-one years (because nobody’s cultural thermometer is accurate all the time).

Hit: We know we’ve been a little Radiohead crazy for the last week, but for good reason: In 1997, a mere two months after its release, we named the band’s OK Computer the Hot Album, a distinction that probably just about nails its eventual cultural impact. Think about what music would be like now without OK. There’d be no Coldplay, no Muse. No Coldplay jokes. The list goes on and on.

Miss: In 1995, we named Jennifer Trynin’s Cockamamie Hot Debut Album. If there were an award for Cold Sophomore Album, she’d probably win that too. Trynin never quite lived up to the “next Liz Phair” hype, but it wasn’t all her fault: In her well-received memoir Everything I’m Cracked Up To Be, Trynin places the blame on the music industry for her “two albums and out” career.

I have no idea how OK Computer translates to Coldplay, or to Muse for that matter.

It was a good record, but it wasn’t responsible for the existence of certain bands.

Rolling Stone, along with everyone else, falls into the trap of blindly obsessing over anything Radiohead does. Regardless of what In Rainbows ended up sounding like, Rolling Stone along with everyone else would have still hailed it as amazing, or whatever adjective Rob Sheffield thought was the most intelligent/unique sounding at that moment.

“Think about what music would be like now without OK (Computer). There’d be no Coldplay”

Hey don’t put that kind of guilt on Radiohead’s shoulders! Radiohead fuckin’ rules!

Coldplay are solely responsible for their musical atrocities!!!!

Hey, you know, Liz Phair has a song that makes me feel kinda funny I hear it, it’s called “Hot White C**”!!!

Damn it, rrd, why won’t you let me say that word!!!! You know you WANT ME to say it!!!! Especially since it’s the greatest feeling . . .

“A mere two months after release”??…that’s like saying that George Bush made the Hot President listing in March of ‘01.

Recogniziing greatness long after everyone else has is no skill at all…but it is something RS is good at (see yesterday’s listing of Beruit as a ‘hot band’…one that’s only been so for two years, now).

Well said, Nick. And I like Radiohead, but don’t get these comparisons or the flipping out over the new Radiohead. I enjoy it, but come on.
