Radiohead’s “In Rainbows”: It’s Heeerrrre

10/10/07, 1:46 am EST

Around fifteen minutes ago your trusty Rolling Stone bloggers received their downloadable versions of Radiohead’s seventh studio LP, In Rainbows. While we gather our thoughts (and clean up that keyboard drool), feel free to post your first impressions in the comments. We can’t help thinking the band dropped this sucker on us at 1:30 AM on purpose.

The MP3s have been unzipped, our iPods have been loaded, and we’re ready to live-blog In Rainbows … And remember, you want to hear how some of the songs previously sounded live, check out our In Rainbows preview to compare and contrast.

“15 Step” 0:20: We’re twenty seconds into “15 Step,” and our brains feel like they are about to explode. 1:45 AM is way too early to unfurl a new Radiohead album on us. The beats are heavier, faster than the live version hinted.

“15 Step” 0:44: After a long percussion/falsetto barrage, the guitar finally kicks in. On Hail To the Thief’s opener “2+2=5,” Radiohead responded to their previous album’s “no guitar” criticism by plugging in their amps and getting loud. Here, they overload on the beats.

“15 Step” 2:25: Thom Yorke’s voice gets all reverbed, like a dub reggae track. Children’s voices shout out in the background, likely courtesy of these kids.

“Bodysnatchers” 0:30: Very similar to the live version; the guitar is more fuzzed-out but structurally, pace-wise, it’s closer to its live predecessor than “15 Step.”

“Bodysnatchers” 2:00: Thom throws out different lyrics after the “I’ve no idea what you’re talking about.” Jonny Greenwood busts out the oceanic guitars for the song’s bridge.

2:57 AM: We agree with the comment left below by Marty: Where is the album artwork? Couldn’t they have embedded it before sending out the MP3s? Our iPod screens look so … blank.

“Nude” 0:30: This song, on its umpteenth incarnation, sounds completely new, despite dating back to the mid-1990s. The introduction now includes strings, but they soon dissipate and we’re left with just the bass line and Thom singing.

“Nude” 2:42: The strings swell, briefly. “You’ll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking.” The choral voices from OK Computer’s “Exit Music (For a Film)” make a brief cameo to add density to Thom’s voice, which is in its A-game on this song.

“Weird Fishes/Arpeggi” 0:36: “Arpeggi” starts off more upbeat than the ascending-keyboard live versions. Acoustic guitar takes over for piano keys.

“Weird Fishes/Arpeggi” 4:00: Thom sings while another Thom harmonizes in the background. Studio magic. All facets of the band finally click, going into overdrive before reaching the crescendo. We’re still pretty sure “fishes” isn’t a word. It’s really late, but “fish” is plural for “fish,” we think. We’ll look it up later.

“All I Need” 0:40: Finally, keyboards!

“All I Need” 1:39: Thom’s voice is soaked in reverb. “I’m just an insect trying to get out of the light.”

“All I Need” 3:25: So far, five songs into it, the trend on the album is sparse, minimal arrangements that soon swell up into orchestral behemoths. This song is no exception, and possibly the standout track of the first half (though we’ve always been keen to “Nude”).

“Faust Arp” 0:25: The one truly unreleased song on disc one of In Rainbows is a swift, acoustic ballad with Gainsbourg-esque strings. It sounds like a more menacing version of HTTT B-side “Gagging Order.”

“Faust Arp” 1:44: Suddenly, it all makes sense. Thom’s voice at this moment was prefaced in the Dead Air Space video posted back in June.

“Reckoner” 1:06: This is “Reckoner???” It’s completely unrecognizable. Gone is our favorite Thom opening line “Feeling pulled apart by horses.” Gone are the sinister guitars, the fierce chorus.

“Reckoner” 2:10: Many fans who were glad that “Reckoner” had been resurrected from the Kid A days are now likely disappointed with its new incarnation. This was Radiohead’s most pulsing rocker. This song is “Reckoner” in name only.

“Reckoner” 3:00: There are two kinds of people right now: Those who embrace this new version of an old song, and those who drafting up bile-spewing posts destined for At Ease as we speak. We don’t know which side we’re on yet.

“House of Cards” 1:25: Yorke sounds like he’s singing in a giant empty amphitheater. Producer Nigel Godrich makes his presence known on this song.

“House of Cards” 3:25: Alongside “Bodysnatchers,” this song sounds the most similar to its live predecessor, right down to its 5:28 running time. Definitely the most laid-back song in the band’s entire post-Bends oeuvre.

“Jigsaw Falling Into Place” 0:35: The song formerly known as “Open Pick.” It becomes obvious from the onset that the In Rainbows “Open Pick” will not be as ferocious or fast-paced as its 2006 live versions suggested. Sandwiched between “House of Cards” and “Videotape,” however, that’s probably a good thing. Fans that lobbied for its inclusion might be a little pissed right now though.

“Jigsaw Falling Into Place” 2:20: Thom wakes up, his voice perks up, gets passionate, says something about a “sawed-off shotgun.” The song starts to resemble its previous version, albeit cleaner and more restrained.

“Videotape” 0:25: Thom sings over wayward, mournful piano strikes. Definitely has the early vibe of Kid A’s closer “Motion Picture Soundtrack.”

“Videotape” 2:56: “Today has been the most perfect day I’ve ever seen.” A touching last line for the album. Spastic drums irregularly pulse while the piano coda winds down toward the conclusion of In Rainbows. In the end, the first listen lacked the initial bombast we expected; the second half of the album was way calmer than we had anticipated, despite carrying two previously hard rockers. Was it worth the five-year wait? Absolutely.

So, tell us what you think of In Rainbows, if you’re still awake …

This album is fucking amazing.

Amanda, New York | 10/10/2007, 2:02 am EST

Incredible.

Love all the string arrangements. “Nude” sent shivers down my spine.

Major Bob , Seattle | 10/10/2007, 2:04 am EST

After hearing many of these songs live last year…it was worth the wait to hear the studio versions.
BRILLIANT!!!

A.J. | 10/10/2007, 2:06 am EST

incredible
four songs in and already my choice for album of the year, sorry neon bible
and to think we are amongst the first in the world to hear it

Zachra | 10/10/2007, 2:11 am EST

Sooooo minimal from what they were doing for the past three albums that its shocking. Beautiful.

ron | 10/10/2007, 2:14 am EST

i am at a loss for words, its genius.

jarinaz | 10/10/2007, 2:17 am EST

simply perfect

ben | 10/10/2007, 2:18 am EST

my download info hasnt come yet im hell annoyed cos i want it now haha

Miguel | 10/10/2007, 2:25 am EST

Oh, my sweet Lord. This is so good it’s not fair.

Marty | 10/10/2007, 2:25 am EST

The album is pretty good. It’s a shame they didn’t put any artwork in the download, looks a lot nicer in cover flow. They dropped the album on 6:30 in Europe, Radiohead is an European band so the purpose is that everyone gets the opportunity to download the album before going to work.

Album art | 10/10/2007, 2:30 am EST

Even though it didn’t come with album art, you can take your favorite Hodiau Direkton image and use it as the cover.

Zachra | 10/10/2007, 2:30 am EST

I’m fairly certain us Discboxers got the download greenlight first.

Can’t wait for that second disc to complete the experience.

danny | 10/10/2007, 2:42 am EST

i never could have believed it would be worth the 5-year wait, but this is maybe the greatest album ever made

Seth | 10/10/2007, 2:47 am EST

Thank you, that was amazing

sy | 10/10/2007, 2:51 am EST

can it compete with enuff znuff’s new album. that is to be seen…

Ryan | 10/10/2007, 2:59 am EST

Best album of the year.

Miguel | 10/10/2007, 3:11 am EST

Naughty little monkeys reeeeeely buried the vocal track of “Faust Arp.”

And, fishes is a word. It can connote (less commonly) the simple plural of “fish” but is generally used when discussing multiple species of fish. Or, in the parlance of the ’20s gangster, “stop burying vocals in the mix, Nigel, or you’ll be sleeping with the fishes.”

Best album I’ve heard in 3 years at least.

Tommy | 10/10/2007, 3:16 am EST

Love to see people freaking out about this already.

ripelivejam | 10/10/2007, 3:26 am EST

ruined:

reckoner
open pick
videotape

:(

BUT

ripelivejam | 10/10/2007, 3:27 am EST

15 step: probably best rh opener ever

i am torn

Jon | 10/10/2007, 3:31 am EST

It’s just so good.

J.D. | 10/10/2007, 3:33 am EST

Reckoner? Not even Reckon-izable. Really wished the original incarnation was on here – had hopes the current one would eventually cut into a full fledged rocker.

Videotape? What the hell happened? I thought it was a shoe-in for one of the best songs after the live versions. That weird drum beat ruined it along with the anti-climactic finish.

Still, some great stuff here.

ripelivejam | 10/10/2007, 3:34 am EST

i guess it became a studio album instead. they probably felt the need to change everything so it wouldn’t end up being HTTT part 2 ;) (though i love that album a lot more than others do…)

but videotape :(

nikhil | 10/10/2007, 3:38 am EST

unbelievable album…stripped down, more accessible to the masses, but still packed full of music and complexity. brilliant

Jon | 10/10/2007, 3:40 am EST

They couldn’t please everyone, especially when it came to Reckoner. But this new Reckoner fits beautifully with the rest of the album, while the previous version just wouldn’t have a place here. You’ll always be able to listen to the live version from years ago whenever you want to. It hasn’t gone away.

ripelivejam | 10/10/2007, 3:41 am EST

mk2 and mk3 of discbox are parts 2 and 3 of reckoner, like thom was saying (including same ferociousness of early full band/thom solo versions)

mark my words…

ripelivejam | 10/10/2007, 3:43 am EST

so… who’s from atease here?

Braxton, Chapel Hill, NC | 10/10/2007, 3:45 am EST

Unreal…

Definitely worth the wait. “All I Need”, “Nude”, and “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi” are each incredible.

The first 20 seconds of “15 Step” is a really intense RH intro…

I love it.

Carl | 10/10/2007, 4:09 am EST

Sure, this is a good album. I enjoyed it, just as I have enjoyed every Radiohead album. But let’s not kid ourselves here. The reactions here are ridiculously exaggerated. This is, after all, the band that released The Bends and OK Computer. Those albums are truly great. In Rainbows does what it does well but it is not on that level.

The Dirty Turtle | 10/10/2007, 4:16 am EST

This is Radiohead saying “Fuck You” to all the lazy songwriters in the music industry today. It’s everything a good chunk of fans wanted to hear. It’s the desert that you feel guilty for eating, before you’ve even realized you don’t have to feel guilty at all… because finally we’ve come across the holy grail of sweets: something both delicious and nutritious.

Jakobi | 10/10/2007, 4:30 am EST

This is definitely not Kid A or Amnesiac.

But it’s also not the OK Computer follow up we’ve all had our fingers crossed for.
It’s a good album, but Radiohead could do better.
I guess this sort of guerilla stule release doesn’t warrant as high of an expectation.

The Tuckster | 10/10/2007, 4:43 am EST

“Fishes” is a word.

scraps18 | 10/10/2007, 4:46 am EST

Stuck at work… can’t wait to hear it. Saw the bombastic live version of Reckoner at the Gorge on the Amnesiac tour, sounds like they went the mellow route…..

adam | 10/10/2007, 4:51 am EST

reckoner isn’t the same song. but u know what it doesn’t matter, this one is beautiful. don’t let everyone kid you. you can still listen to the old version. it wouldn’t have fit in this album. this album is just so intoxicating. its different then anything they’ve ever done. the strings are AMAZING.

Ramon, Spain | 10/10/2007, 5:03 am EST

It’s been a long wait, but definitely worh it!!

Ben | 10/10/2007, 5:30 am EST

Nude, Arpeggi, All I Need. As good as anything they’ve done. Sitting at work, struggling to contain myself.

Looks like At Ease is taking a bit of a pounding. Time for some new servers/hosts Adriaan!

Martin | 10/10/2007, 5:35 am EST

Cant wait to hear it when i get home. hope videotape is no too recked

Ben | 10/10/2007, 5:35 am EST

“We can’t help thinking the band dropped this sucker on us at 1:30 AM on purpose.”

Hahaha. Is there no end to Yank egotism? Mid-morning in the Old Empire….

nsp - Montevideo - UY | 10/10/2007, 5:39 am EST

Best rh album together with Ok Computer

Maserati | 10/10/2007, 5:47 am EST

This is why I ignored all the bootlegs, this album is brilliant..!

Joshua | 10/10/2007, 9:23 am EST

RADIOHEAD es la mejor banda del mundo… esta a anhos luz de todo lo demas… discazo… saludos a la banda mexicana que si sabe de musica

Evan, New Jersey | 10/10/2007, 9:32 am EST

Radiohead is my favorite band, by far, but this is not their best work… not even in the top three. This is a really good album, but not great, part of my disappointment may be due to the fact that for more than a year I had expected something in the vein of the Bends. This is not what I had expected (not in a good way).

Vanessa | 10/10/2007, 9:39 am EST

This album is fucking amazing! It is better than I could have hoped for. Jigsaw is my personal fave so far…

Scenic Anemia | 10/10/2007, 9:43 am EST

This version of “Reckoner” gives me shivers. So great.

mang-goooo` | 10/10/2007, 9:43 am EST

brilliant, NO one else is making such vibrant music these days!

Jon F | 10/10/2007, 9:44 am EST

OK, they’ve stopped trying to reinvent the wheel like OK Comp and Kid A. OK, this isn’t their best. OK, this isn’t even HTTT. This isn’t the best album of the year, or the best RH album. It’s just a great fucking album full of great songs.

Anonymous | 10/10/2007, 9:46 am EST

Who wrote this?

Jason Z | 10/10/2007, 9:46 am EST

Am I the only one that noticed that the strings at the end of Reckoner sound A LOT like Paul McCartney’s Silly Love Songs? I doubt it was intentional, but it was a bit weird to notice when listening to Radiohead.

Benjamin Cuthrell | 10/10/2007, 9:47 am EST

4 years of waiting….and I didn’t even get the e-mail

MADD Croatia | 10/10/2007, 9:49 am EST

I guess all u have to say is RADIOHEAD they’ve done it once more, brilliant.

tony the fish knower | 10/10/2007, 9:51 am EST

Fishes is a word. Fish is the plural of one kind of fish. But if you have more than one species of fish, then it’s fishes.

Derick | 10/10/2007, 9:59 am EST

Brilliant. all I can say. my favorite since OK.

JY | 10/10/2007, 10:01 am EST

Liking it, but agree – I want some album art too

johnny honestly | 10/10/2007, 10:02 am EST

i dont think you can judge their albums against each other anymore. They make music that is so much more interesting than anyone else making music today, every new album is like a declaration that you can still make amazing heartfelt music if you actually fucking try

Mac | 10/10/2007, 10:05 am EST

I am going to swim against the tide. I think its, frankly, pretentious. Yawn

Jeremy, somewhere in Iowa | 10/10/2007, 10:14 am EST

Stripped down, more instrumental than their past efforts, more melodic. It’s just a great album. Probably one of their stronger ones.

jonathan | 10/10/2007, 10:16 am EST

Perhaps the best yet, each note reverberating inside me; making it impossible for me not to smile at the awe of its perfection.

Jeremy, somewhere in Iowa | 10/10/2007, 10:19 am EST

This album is just great. As usual radiohead strips it all down and builds it back up again, with superb results. Ignore the ridiculous hype, this is just a great record full of great music. Definitely one of their strongest to date.

Clem | 10/10/2007, 10:25 am EST

Wonderful. I can’t wait for the tour.

Justin | 10/10/2007, 10:25 am EST

Absolutely tremendous stuff. I think this album easily eclipses HTTT and probably falls into the top three of the albums in their discography.

marco | 10/10/2007, 10:26 am EST

Its more like OK Computer than the previous 3 albums. Only it has less variation and surprises: All the songs have the same atmosphere and tempo and the songs are quite long. Great but not brillant.

Monster | 10/10/2007, 10:27 am EST

this one might just be my favorite…..

Kevin | 10/10/2007, 10:28 am EST

Well, I downloaded the album before work this morning and wasn’t able to listen to the whole thing, yet. I am not sure what to make of the album so far. But there’s one thing I have learned – you can’t judge a Radiohead album by the first (or second or even third) listen. RH music is like a a cryptic message that you must listen to repeatedly in order to open. I too wish that the music came with album art. So far, my perception is that it’s a beautiful album, but I think it was wise to release it this way. I think our expectations might have been higher if it had been released as a proper studio album (maybe that’s just me). I only ordered the download. Does anyone know if it is true that there will not be another studio album this year? I know that the web-site said that the other album will be available Dec. 3 (for those that shelled out the extra $ for the discbox), but I believe Rolling Stone has said that isn’t true.

Alexandre Honório, Brasil | 10/10/2007, 10:28 am EST

From here, all i can see is the musical industry afraid with this ruge & revolutionary release…

Dave, Fairfax, VA | 10/10/2007, 10:29 am EST

Al I ever hear is I wish it sounded like the Bends, I want the Bends, BENDS, BENDS, BENDS. You know what ? It is a great sounding album. What band can you say today that produces a different sounding album everytime. They are not 20 anymore. I like how the sound has grown up like they do in age. Radiohead is byfar the best and my fav band outthere

really dude? | 10/10/2007, 10:31 am EST

anyone else not get the email yet? I mean come on, I shell out $81 for he disc box and I have to wait for the email? I can’t take it! what is going on? I want to here the album.

Bill | 10/10/2007, 10:31 am EST

Can’t believe people have a problem with the new Reckoner. It’s one of my favorites on the album and a huge surprise. It’s pretty much an entirely new song.

Dave | 10/10/2007, 10:33 am EST

Who cares about artwork, this album is amazing.

Ur Da | 10/10/2007, 10:33 am EST

great record

Hey Chuck U | 10/10/2007, 10:35 am EST

is this kind of live blogging to the radiohead record as it plays?

Stewie | 10/10/2007, 10:37 am EST

Me no e-mail yet. Me sad and suicidal.

Puffinagogo | 10/10/2007, 10:41 am EST

Best RH since Kid A. The first half is a definite winner. More dynamic than the b-side (yeah, I’m using old school terms for a digital album). But the whole piece is a winner. More consistant than Amnesiac and streamlined and better editted when compared to the bloated HTTT. Ten track albums are always my favorites. I’m sure my appreciation will grow the more I listen to it.

You’ve got to be kidding if you are actually going to complain about the album artwork

How about you cherish the fact that Radiohead have yet again released an amazing record?

It is just superb. Hands down best album of the year…and also the most important.

The music industry is about to be changed

jj | 10/10/2007, 10:43 am EST

I’m using this for the CD artwork, until something better comes along:

you’ll need to remove the spaces in the URL, though – Thanks for that Rolling Stone!

Anonymous | 10/10/2007, 10:50 am EST

Did anyone else notice on “Videotape” at around 2:40 he doesn’t say “after it’s too late” like he did on the itunes version? It almost sounds like a mistake.

Chris Martin | 10/10/2007, 10:52 am EST

I just want to cry. how are the other boys and I supposed to compete against this? Its just not fair :(

Brian | 10/10/2007, 10:53 am EST

The album gets better after each listen (on my third). “Bodysnatchers” is great and has been left on everyones list here. Album was worth the wait.

BH | 10/10/2007, 10:55 am EST

I love it too, but I’m a little nervous. Previous Radiohead releases (well, starting with OK Computer) never jumped out and grabbed me like this one did, they insidiously snuck up and overtook me only after repeated listenings. My hope is that I’ll continue to discover the hidden melodies, counterpoint beats, and overwhelming lushness over the course of several weeks. My favorite albums always take time to ripen in my head.

Regardless, this is a brilliant album by the world’s most important band.

webegenies | 10/10/2007, 11:04 am EST

Word. Thanks boys, this is just what I wanted. Viva la Radiohead!

Bibiane, Rome | 10/10/2007, 11:08 am EST

Unbelievable. It’s even more perfect than I ever imagined. I never thought I could love an album more than Kid A. Now I know I can: Sublime.

PS: I am one of those who adore the new Reckoner version. Love it, absolutely.

tattoo - black mountain, NC | 10/10/2007, 11:14 am EST

F*&cking brilliant….

I want to hear more on sales figures…just a groundbreaking idea…screw the record companies….i hope everyone at least ponied up something….me? $6…and the download was effortless….no glitches…everyone else?

thanks guys….brilliant

TLD | 10/10/2007, 11:19 am EST

Oh. Wow.
Fantastic. My favorite Radiohead in a long time.
I’m not gonna go on and on.

Alex Detroit | 10/10/2007, 11:20 am EST

Honestly, i kinda wish i hadn’t listened to all those tour bootlegs over and over… but now i guess i get to go through and say “hey, i like what nigel did there, etc. etc.”

good album, i want “Down is the New Up” though…

So calm… But i know i’ll come to love it

Anonymous | 10/10/2007, 11:22 am EST

I still can’t believe that people have the balls to complain about the artwork, or the lack thereof. What can you expect, especially if you’re one of those who elected NOT to pay for the album.

That aside, this album is brilliant. “All I Need” is my favorite on the album thus far. Freakin’ incredible…bravo boys, bravo…

Heath | 10/10/2007, 11:26 am EST

Thank you, Radiohead. You made my day/week/year.

Anonymous | 10/10/2007, 11:27 am EST

GF got up early to start the download while I was in the shower. Asked her to burn a CD for me while I dressed.

Rode to work in the cool desert air with the windows down and In Rainbows playing.

Awesome ride to work today…

Jeremy, NY | 10/10/2007, 11:29 am EST

You can hear the amount of effort they put into these songs in the studio. Sonically, it’s as interesting to me as OK Computer. It sounds incredibly upclose and personal. It’s also the most analog sound I’ve heard from them since Ok Computer. Even the glitches and ambient noises sound anaolog. It’s a great work of art.

Jordy | 10/10/2007, 11:34 am EST

Absolutely wonderful…the drums on Videotape are unreal. I love it all.

Schzzrf | 10/10/2007, 11:42 am EST

Maybe too early to give a reasonable opinion…but fuck it; I love it

K_REY_C | 10/10/2007, 11:44 am EST

Perhaps the title, IN RAINBOWS, is what we are meant to see. I must admit (like some others) that the album sounds perfect on the first listen (kind of different from Kid A, Amnesiac, OK, and even HTTT)… and while I hope there is still some decoding/mind settling left for the album (I’m sure there is) perhaps those of us who have listened for so long have finally learned how to listen to the band we love.

This is not a bad thing… there are many to be converted yet.

Go forth.

The entire album is pleasant. It feels correct, it feels like an ocean that doesn’t make you sick but gently lulls you into dream.

…and the colors…

Thank you Radiohead.

Even without the hype, the press, the “no really, it’s up to you”, we have a wonderful album to enjoy.

Thank you.

The Insect in the Night | 10/10/2007, 11:45 am EST

I’m an at easer..but the board keeps crashing because it’s too busy…so here’s my feedback.

Brilliant. I prefer the new version of “reckoner” to the “gimmefrenchfries” one, ha ha.
“All I Need” is gorgeous, as is “Nude.” The latter nearly brought me to tears…mark you, it was five in the morning and I’d only had three hours of sleep…but still.

Worth it. At least a nine out of ten…

I feel like this is from some ideal world where we’ve moved beyond The Thief and the War. We’re over being angry and now we’re creating something better and different. “Today has been the most perfect day I’ve ever seen.” Yes.

I’m really disappointed that Radiohead is such a brand, now, that people can’t hear any of their post-OK releases for what they are – people are just thrilled to have a new record and are utterly blinded by their “Yay! Radiohead!” enthusiasm that they’re really missing the fact that Radiohead just keeps getting lazier and lazier.

Come on, people. Thom and company phoned in the song writing, they slept through their performances, and they asked Nigel to glitz it up and make it sound sparkly-pretty so we don’t notice how lazy, boring, and completely uninventive the music on this LP is. AND the download’s 160kbs file quality is sub-par – it’s not even CD-quality sound! The only 2007 release I’ve been more disappointed with was Bjork’s “Volta” – another phone-in. I’m glad I only paid Radiohead $5 for their middling work.

Begley | 10/10/2007, 12:50 pm EST

Just finished my listen and what can I say other than amazing? I wanted to say unbelieveable, but I completely believe that Radiohead is capable of this (who couldn’t believe that after OK?). I guess all I am left with is a few more listens to really decode the whole thing, and wishes that I had somewhere to drive today.

Screw that. it should be blatantly obvious how much restraint was put into this record. just cuz it doesnt herald in a whole new landscrape of edgy bleeps and blips, its radiohead sounding downright bouyant at times, and that in and of itself, is a f-in brilliant feat. i mean, c’mon, how depressed do ya think thom yorke and co. can be for nearly two decades? take a page from their book, and lighten up a notch.

Bad Production
Weird annoying beats

lush and expansive..
haunting, captivating

little upset about the lack of embedded artwork myself but hearing the album inspires a collage of colors in my mind..

“Nude” is the current personal favorite, “Jigsaw…” as well..

conor, dublin | 10/10/2007, 1:04 pm EST

christ, talk about goosebump enducing. It’s amazing. Preferred the “rockier ” reckoner but all is made better by all I need. holy poo! also, u can get the artwork by going to wikipedia and copy and pasting.

Coldhead | 10/10/2007, 1:07 pm EST

Definitely the top three Radiohead albums. Have a hard time placing it ahead of OK Computer and Kid A so I will give it a slot in the third position of my Radiohead album rank list. Can’t wait for the discbox with the bonus tracks.

joe | 10/10/2007, 1:11 pm EST

people keep posting that they hope that they’ll uncover the layers and textures of the songs as they keep listening. i think one think to listen closely to is the drumming. On Reckoner and Jigsaw its just incredible. so complex.

reckoner, nude, bodysnatchers, All I need are just amazing songs!

eli cash | 10/10/2007, 1:12 pm EST

After two listens (neither on headphones) I am satisfied and impressed, but there is nothing earth-shattering here….at least I don’t think there is, at this point….sometimes it takes a dozen or so listens on headphones to have that moment when you realize something is what it is.

I would not be surprised to see another album within the next six months.

If you’ve listened to this already 4-5 times.. make sure one of those times is with a GREAT pair of headphones, the big can kind if you have them. Oh my goodness, this is just fantastic. The sequencing is perfect… it’s going to be a chore to wait till Dec. 3rd to hear all the other studio works (Down is the new Up, Bangers-N-Mash, Last Flowers…)

They picked the most appropriate batch of songs.
… THIS is the sequel to O.k. CPU weve been waiting for.

Great. I love the refining they’ve gone through with this album. Direct contrast to the manic ‘hail’.

I had my inbox open all night last night. At 12:01am it came through. The download was seamless – extracted the songs and brought them right over into iTunes.

I had a serious WTF moment when I heard reckoner for the first time.

Wierd Fishes/Arpeggi actually brought tears to my eyes.

I’ve been in a haze all morning – trying to listen to the album and be as objective as possible – but each listen just assures me more and more; this is the best album since Kid A.

err... | 10/10/2007, 1:23 pm EST

not bad, but not great. admittedly only 3 listens in, but all the ticking and clicking is largely unecessary and really detracts from the really strong foundations. arpeggi: lost a lot of life. videotape: drums completely unecessary. nude: at last – but a little flat. radiohead has been my favorite band for over 10 years (see OK Computer), but i’d be lying if i said i wasn’t left wanting here. these tunes would be better served over 1 guitar (or 1 piano) and a voice. but i still confide in the live performances of these songs, which as we all know, we’re AMAZING. i’m so confused…

Their best since OK Computer. On my 3rd listen, it’s growing on me.

Found low-res artwork on the wikipedia page for In Rainbows. Hoping for higher res versions soon.

Also, would have been nice to have had 320kbs MP3s, but 160kbs is better than 128kbs.

hey, two thing. first of all. Which song do you people think is best? I mean, if there had to be a first single, which would it be? Nude? Second of all, I totally agree with the thing U said about “Reckoner”. Does anybody have a link to donwload the fantastic Live version? Please!? My email is davidgoldfark@gmail.com Please snd link! All in All, good album.

DAVID | 10/10/2007, 2:45 pm EST

Im not gonna overblow it…Its not as good as Ok computer or anything before that. Still, its fantastic and better than The 2 albums before Hail to the thief. Its about equil to hail to the thief, and if it had Reckoner as it was played live, it would be better than HTTT.

DAVID | 10/10/2007, 2:49 pm EST

best album of the year is pretty strong. I say ONE of the bes tALTERNATIVE albums of the year. It doesnt have a Song that is REALLY radio-ready Single Material, but O well. Fantastic album, Maybe even better than Zeitgeist.

Which I’m sure will change the more I listen to it.

While I haven’t heard the album yet still (Grrrr…) I’m gonna have to oppose your statement that an “Album of the Year” should have a radio-ready single. Some of my favorite albums this year will NEVER be played on the radio. Not trying to start an argument…just sayin. Plus, Zeitgeist is good, but nowhere near album of the year in my opinion, and I’m a HUGE Pumpkins fan.

chuck | 10/10/2007, 3:01 pm EST

I suppose you didn’t say Zeitgeist should be album of the year…but you know what I mean.

Kevin | 10/10/2007, 4:02 pm EST

So, other than In Rainbows (isn’t it weird that it sounds like a Mariah Carey album title – the horror!), what is your fave album of the year? For me it’s probably West by Lucinda Williams.

Will Fearless | 10/10/2007, 4:09 pm EST

At 10 songs and about 45 minutes, it’s a little too brief. Didn’t really care much for the sequencing of tracks either. It also just doesnt feel like a Radiohead album without the Stanley Donwood artwork on the jacket.

I’m sure the studio version of “Nude” completely blew away everyone’s expectations. I’m with RS, I thought “Reckoner” would be another romp and stomp like “Bodysnatchers” but it came across as kind of underwhelming. Not a big fan of “Videotape” either. I think this is the closest Radiohead has made to a “club friendly” record. It sounds like Johnny is pulling the strings behind the scenes, and I wonder if all the string parts may have been influenced by Johnny’s Composer in Residence post at the BBC. These are minor complaints, and after waiting longer then I ever have for a Radiohead album I think I have the right to complain.

Clint | 10/10/2007, 4:27 pm EST

I paid for the disk box and apart from my confirmation about that, I haven’t heard from W.A.S.T.E. at all. No code, no nothing. I’m not pleased. I too emailed them, and while I’m sure they’re overwhelmed with inquiries today, I WANT MY DAMN DOWNLOADS! :)

Joel | 10/10/2007, 4:29 pm EST

Yeah I’m still waiting for download code too. Not in spam folder. I haven’t got anything since the confirmation email after I ordered it. I’m guessing that there’s a few teething problems.

Coldhead | 10/10/2007, 4:46 pm EST

My e-mail code was waiting on me this morning when I woke up at 6:00am eastern time. The time stamp showed it arrived Wed, 10 Oct 2007 06:34:10 +0100 (BST), which I would make that 1:34:10am EST. Guess I got lucky with that…

Chuck | 10/10/2007, 4:55 pm EST

Kevin (& others interested),

Well, I still have not recieved a download code. Not sure what will happen as far as that goes but…
Due to the kindness of an internet buddy, I did get the zip file, and have just finished listening to the goodness.

Analysis: BRILLIANT!!!
What a great collection of songs! Definately stripped down, but it’s just simply amazing. I don’t know what to put as my fav so far, but 15 Step, Bodysnatchers, Nude, & All I Need gave me goosebumps. I for one am glad I didn’t overdose on the live bootlegs. I heard them enough to be familiar with the melodies, but I held back just enough to make the album a “newer” experience.
Only complaints: As an album, it doesn’t have the flow others have. I’m a big fan of when songs literally flow right into the next one. Also…No “Down is the New Up,” which was my fav of the new ones. Oh well, I’ll get it soon.
Anyways, all and all, AMAZING album!!!

Bill | 10/10/2007, 5:14 pm EST

Who ever called this a club record GO HANG YOURSELF!!! FANTASTIC ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gateman | 10/10/2007, 5:14 pm EST

I like it. It sorta reminds me of Think Tank by Blur. Just a solid album all the way around.

NATE | 10/10/2007, 5:21 pm EST

Ok, so I’ve been reading some of the comments and you guys are a bunch of babies (well, most of you anyways). First of all, it is only 160 kbps so there is no way this is going to be CD quality. But it’s free!! The artwork and better quality tracks are waiting for you in the disc box, so shut up and be patient. Secondly, whoever mentions Smashing Pumpkin’s garbage album, Zeitgeist, in the same sentence as this release should be fitted with concrete boots and dropped into the Hudson. Zeitgeist was a piece of trash and is probably one of the worst albums I’ve EVER heard. Nonetheless, this album is nothing short of pure genius and is a masterpiece of the album (I think I’ve listened to it 10 times already). I’m already salivating for the disc box…..

Lel | 10/10/2007, 5:27 pm EST

Grettings from Mexico City.

I’ve only heard 2/3 of this album from XM radio channel 47 (ETHEL) & all songs I’m diggin. From my opinion, sounds like the best since Kid A. GO RADIOHEAD!!!!!

kmb | 10/10/2007, 6:33 pm EST

as one who has never heard the original version of Reckoner, I have to say, that this current version is the stand-out track

DAVID | 10/10/2007, 7:38 pm EST

Im sorry, when I said radio-friendly, I didnt mean stuff that would be played on the radio. What I meant is…Catchy. Catchy is the word I was looking for. I mean, There isnt A song that I would consider a single-worthy track, only a crapload of good songs. Still, amazing album. One of the bst this year, along with zeitgeist, Kala, And Year Zero.

Kevin | 10/10/2007, 8:00 pm EST

Here’s a link to the lyrics. I haven’t checked yet to see if they are correct. Let me know if you will.

http://www.greenplast ic.com/lyrics/

eep | 10/10/2007, 8:02 pm EST

I don’t think ‘reckoner’ is the same ‘reckoner’ I heard played at the Gorge in ‘01. The chorus and a lot of the lyrics are totally different…not even sure the music is in the same key.

I think maybe thom just likes the word. The ‘Reckoner’ that was played live has also been referred to as ‘Being Pulled Apart By Horses’, which is the first line and sorta describes the King Crimson-ish rock sound of that track…the chorus on that version was just ‘Reckoner/Ba Ba Bada’ repeated.

I love this version…hope they release that other song at some point too, as it was stellar.

Dan | 10/10/2007, 8:07 pm EST

Yes, fucking amazing. Could have used a higher bit rate or AIFF encoding though.

Aaron | 10/10/2007, 8:33 pm EST

In Rainbows is a pretty good album if you can forgive the general shittiness of the production – Thom fluffs a line in Videotape, the mastering is totally inconsistent throughout(levels are all over the place from track to track- some are unbearably loud & others too quiet) & Phil Selway sounds like he’s thumping a math textbook throughout instead of just playing the drums (was Nigel Godrich out to lunch here or what?). All I Need & a completely re-written Reckoner were highlights for me, Nude was pretty nice & Faust Arp was a sweetly understated surprise but anyone saying In Rainbows even comes close to Kid A/Amnesiac, Ok Computer or The Bends is living in a dreamworld. But it’s still a damn sight better than Pablo Honey or Hail to the Thief.

john ,los angeles | 10/10/2007, 8:37 pm EST

sounds similar to thom yorkes solo album, considering whats out there these days ,it’s great! and different idea with the download.all the best mellowhead.!

Stitch Grimly | 10/10/2007, 9:54 pm EST

I wish there wasn’t just one chorus on Nude now. That’s like the best Radiohead chorus ever. The live version from 1998 is superior for that fact only.

“just when you fiiiiiiiiiiiind it, it’s gone”

To put it nicely – you are a moron. Zeitgeist is one of the top albums of the year.

Kyle, NY | 10/10/2007, 10:09 pm EST

On the first 4 listens I would say this is a very good album. I just wish there was a few more songs with more energy to them. This album could almost work as elevator music. It’s still very good, but whoever says this is on the same level as Ok Computer or The Bends are not doing those albums the credit they deserve

Thanks you Wild Slide, zeitgeist is great. And Kyle, Ny, I agree… i wish it wasnt soo, mellow. Still, great album

DAVID | 10/10/2007, 10:32 pm EST

The way I see it, Zeitgeist os the Best Rockish, Hardcore Guitar Heavy Alternative album of the year and In Rainbows is the best Soft, Mellow alternative album of the year. Dont know which one I like more. And Year Zero is the best Electronic Alternative album of the year.

its funny how the first four songs are amazing, but after that it drags. ppl who only hear the beginning say its the best, its funny, i agreed 4 songs in.
great album, but radiohead has done better.

dude | 10/10/2007, 11:21 pm EST

am I the only one who thinks In Rainbows is complete crap? where are the melodies on the album? the songs go absolutely nowhere, ITS AWFUL

Benjamin Cuthrell | 10/10/2007, 11:45 pm EST

give it a chance…it’s the only Radiohead album I’ve ever listened to where I have to give it a couple listens for the second half to sit well with me. “Nude” is by far my favorite right now

Devin | 10/10/2007, 11:47 pm EST

Mmmm…the sweet sweet sounds of mild disappointment. The steady drum of diminishing returns. It has its moments, but overall it seems to be Radiohead-lite, everything designed to be Radiohead enough to be familiar, but not really good enough to make a case for itself overall.

It’s funny how someone mentioned Zeitgeist. This is everything the press accused that album of being: a calculated attempt at satisfying fans expectations and not very much more. And frankly, Zeitgeist was the superior album overall. Hell, I can’t even think of a standout track from this, and that hasn’t really happened on a Radiohead album before.

I suppose it could grow on me in time, but at the moment, I can honestly say I found it rather poor. I guess it costs nothing. That’s about what it’s worth.

partea | 10/11/2007, 12:20 am EST

halloween is about ghosts. lassie and prior had the melodic depth, which lacks to my ears in zeitgeist. i have yet to hear the new radiohead…it might be ok.

Honky D | 10/11/2007, 1:07 am EST

Expectation’s a bitch. I love “Reckoner” – THIS “Reckoner” — but that’s one of the few songs that, for some reason, I didn’t have the live version of from ‘06. And voila, no expectations, no disappointment, for me. I can’t say the same for “House of Cards,” which as I see it, suffers from too much reverb on Thom. But in that case, I knew the live version well … too well. Oh, to take it all back now!

You know what? This album doesn’t sound like other Radiohead albums because it’s their NEXT album. And any fan who’s followed them this far knows they’re not content to stay in one place. The sound reflects who they are now and where they are in their lives — not where they WERE.

Just to put it in perspective for myself, I’m listening to Abbey Road right now. Somehow it’s all making sense to me. That said, I sure as shit hope this isn’t their Abbey Road. But as they are still on speaking terms — far better than that, they sound like they’re having a blast — I’m not too worried.

Long live Radiohead! May they continue to evolve (as we struggle to catch up)

Absolutely amazing album… Radiohead’s best since OK Computer!

fekade | 10/11/2007, 1:37 am EST

lush…of all the remarks I heard and read , this sticks to what i feel towards what I hear even from the frenetic. I am thrilled to finally listen to the album, but I dont know where to place it yet. Maybe that is the apeal, maybe we are discovering a whole new Radiohead again

Musical Jenius | 10/11/2007, 1:52 am EST

I’m amazed that some people seemingly chose to pay nothing for this. It sounds great, well worth $10.

NATE | 10/11/2007, 1:55 am EST

quit mentioning the “Z” word!

max | 10/11/2007, 2:16 am EST

i listened to it once and was disssapointed. the layers and textures have to coalesce for this album’s beauty to shine through. finally found it on reckoner even though its unrecognizeble from the live versions

saad | 10/11/2007, 2:26 am EST

great album…even though i can’t pick a fucking single track that truly stands out…it’s beautiful…but completely impossible to pick apart and notice a single or two like a normal album…this shit is like ok computer…there are no singles…and its the greatest album u’ll ever hear…amazing again…

Woo from Seattle | 10/11/2007, 2:40 am EST

Like all RH albums, at first listen, I was simply wetting my feet, wondering just how obsessed I’d eventually become with it.
During the second listen, I was lambasted with that sweet melancholy only RH is capable of sonically delivering.
Hard to pick a favorite this soon… it appears there will be many.

Brilliant? Sure…
Amazing? Sure…
It’s Radiohead, and I expected this. And it was totally worth the wait.

Woo from Seattle, part II | 10/11/2007, 2:45 am EST

As for raising their middle finger to the record label industry…

Way to go, Radiohead… way to go.

Ystyn, Brisbane, AUSTRALIA | 10/11/2007, 2:58 am EST

My wife couldn’t understand why I had such a stupid grin on my face as “15 Step” kicked in. How could I explain to her in words the joy that comes from listening to a new Radiohead album? It is fantastic! I made the high school classes I teach all listen to it today. I saw students who had never heard of the band before writing the name down on their arm for further examination. Yet another brilliant edition to an eclectic discography!

julian - south africa | 10/11/2007, 3:36 am EST

This album combines the best of radiohead for me, makes me feel like a creep and leaves me high and dry love it love it love it thanks radiohead, you continue to amaze me keep it going

Mr. Peepers | 10/11/2007, 4:19 am EST

I agree with those who say its a hard listen the first time. This album is a bit like Rock and Roll Jazz. Its all over the place at times and you never know where its gonna go.

On the second listen… you’re able to hear how sparse and intimate it is. Its a straight- out BAND record…

I believe HTTT is not given enough credit. That album has some GREAT songs on it… I find myself going back to it more and more these days. Much more than the Kid A/Amnesiac days. “There There” is one of the most solid songs they’ve done since Paranoid Android.

Back to In Rainbows though… the only beef I have with it now is that “15 Steps” has no place on the album. First, it lended me to believe that this was just going to be a rehash of the Yorke solo album… to which I was wrong. Second, that’s exactly it– the song sticks out like a sore thumb amongst everything else and, while I think its just “okay”, could easily have been removed and replaced with a song that fits the rest of the album’s sound.

And what the fuck was Rob Sheffield doing when he wrote, “The end of “Videotape” is the only time the band dips back into dated glitch-blip electronics” in his review? Did he even HEAR “15 Steps”? Was sleep that close at the time of writing? If so, sleep it… review it afterward– we’ll wait.

Darren, CA | 10/11/2007, 5:09 am EST

This is Radiohead’s best album since OK Computer. Although I would consider Kid A a masterpiece, In Rainbows finally reaches the Olympic heights of Radiohead peak period. Any negative reviews given by individuals are solely based on misguided expectations or just a simple lack of understanding this new miracle of music. My suggestion is to imagine if you can that this is Radiohead’s first release, without anything to compare it to. Even though there is a pop feeling to the album, there is still that dark undercurrent of something not quit transparent under the surface of things. Also it’s important to be careful not to take some of the simple sounding elements as something that’s stock, these are difficult compositions. And that’s the magic of this masterpiece, appeal to the catchy elements that makes top ten singles, but difficult music to create. Once again Radiohead have captured the muse once again to generate by far the best album of the year. This could arguably be considered the best album of the 21st century so far.

5 stars! what an album! what a band!

Richard Johnson, UK | 10/11/2007, 5:46 am EST

There was something that John Peel said about the Fall: “always different, but always the same”. Well, that can easily be applied to Radiohead. Different in feeling, and in its textures – the most ‘lush’ record they’ve ever done, but still the same in the fact that it completely pulverizes the opposition and again underlines why Radiohead are the best band in the world, bar none.

Kevin | 10/11/2007, 7:44 am EST

Well, I started my 3rd or 4th listen at 6:30 this morning and the full beauty of the album is finally settling in. So far, I’d have to say Nude is my fave but that’ll probably change.

dorkus minorkus | 10/11/2007, 8:15 am EST

favorite tracks so far: “all i need” and “videotape.” both get close to sigur-ros-esque drama at the ends.

and whatever bitch even brought up the shitty pumpkins album should be shot. zeitgeist sucks ass. even zwan was better.

Kevin | 10/11/2007, 8:21 am EST

Well, now I am starting my 4th or 5th listen. Maybe my fave now is 15 Step or All I Need or House of Cards. Ha!

I agree with earlier posts that suggested that exposure to the bootleg versions might leave one’s expectations disappointed. I know none of the bootleg stuff, so I am relly digging getting to know these songs for the first time.

And while we are talking about great rock albums of 2007, how come no one is mentioning the amazing Icky Thump by The White Stripes?

SeanBOS | 10/11/2007, 9:08 am EST

Wow. Best since OK Computer definitely. Gone is the need to darkly delve into the oddities. Its as if the true voice comes through in a brightness that is a more optimistic and mature.

Matthew Corpus Christi, Tx | 10/11/2007, 9:58 am EST

What can I say, the brillant minds of Radiohead put together another masterpiece! The new album most definatly has a warmer side to it…almost like a “bendsishy” touch. Yet, with an “ok computer/hail” twist! F-ing Brillant Thom! F-ing Brillant!

…Keep On Keeping On Radiohead!

Kaleb, NY | 10/11/2007, 10:12 am EST

I absolutely concur with Matthew from Texas. I want to have Thom’s babies!!

Erik, Buffalo, NY | 10/11/2007, 10:13 am EST

Brilliant Brilliant. Just as their last albums,I smoke a joint, sit back, close my eyes, and drift into a world of absolute beautiful sounds

Paulo, Lousada, Portugal | 10/11/2007, 11:34 am EST

It´s just fantastic it takes you in another dimension.

Comparing this to Smashing Pumpkins is comparing wather whit wine.

Radiohead are the only band that really pushes your brain into high trips.

Light your joints and relax.
Radiohead are here to make your life bigger

James Coates | 10/11/2007, 12:42 pm EST

This album is hot. I love it as much as I’ve loved any of their albums.

ca1 | 10/11/2007, 12:44 pm EST

Let’s face it. New Radiohead albums are like eating at a fine restaurant after spending a few years eating (mostly) fast food. At the first listen, I wasn’t so sure about the record. It’s growing on me. “House of Cards” and “Nude” are now embedded in my brain. Let’s hope they never get out. :-)

felip yorke | 10/11/2007, 1:35 pm EST

hell of an album, favorites so far is house of cards, reckoner and all i need is a masterpiece! nude and faust arp were awesome as well

KNIVES OUT | 10/11/2007, 2:03 pm EST

I just got my activation Code at 1:51 eastern time.I guess they were having a hard time getting everyones e-mails out. Can’t wait to go home and hear it this evening.I don’t understand all the people who have been so critical of these guys ever since KID A came out. They are the most innovative band making music today.Nothing will ever sound like OK Computer or The Bends those albums are from a different era.Radiohead=Smoked Gouda Smashing Pumpkins=Cheap American Singles.

Eddie, San Antonio, TX | 10/11/2007, 2:10 pm EST

Any review of a Radiohead album on first listen is bound to fail. My Radiohead album process is:

1. Wait with overzealous anticipation for the release

2. Listen first time… Think “This is OK, but maybe I was expecting too much. Maybe I was over excited. Maybe (dare I say it?) they’ve lost the spark.”

3. Listen second time… Think “Well, song “x” is pretty good, but that song “y”, man where’s the skip button?”

4. Listen third time…. “Hey, you know the album really is pretty good, even that song “y” isn’t so bad”

5. Listen fourth time…. “Freankin’ A’, they’ve done it again, this freaking album is amazing. song “y” is Godhead (as my buddy Jeff would say”

6. Listen fifth time…. “My God… It’s full of stars…”

….

7. Put on Bends and reflect on how freaking accomplished a bunch of kids from Oxfordshire have become. The evolution is amazing.

8. Put new album back on and bask in the light.

Adam | 10/11/2007, 3:47 pm EST

From tracks 3 through 9, you’ve got one of the most rewarding run of songs since Sgt. Pepper/Beggar’s Banquet/Zep 4. Just incredible. Really beyond compare.

It’s sad how no other band is even close to this level of songwriting. And, well, it’s awesome to behold at the same time.

And tracks 1, 2, and 10 aren’t exactly bad. Kind of the Electioneerings of this bunch. Videotape was just so incredible live. So epic.

DAVID | 10/11/2007, 4:22 pm EST

hey, two thing. first of all. All in All, good album.

chuck | 10/11/2007, 4:39 pm EST

After my downloading woes, (the site was great at fixing the problem, got tons of repsonse emails) I have reached the point of multiple listens.
What an album. I LOVE Reckoner on the album.
P.S.- Dave, I love the pumpkins and zeitgeist is good, but if you think Year Zero is the best electo-alt album of the year, ya need to look around more! LCD Soundsystem, Justice, Of Montreal, Fujiya and Miyagi…all superb.

Fjallman | 10/11/2007, 4:40 pm EST

first listen now and it seems this is the best record released by any band since Kid A really

Arpeggi is even better than the songs on Kid A and Vidotape is just something magical

Kevin | 10/11/2007, 5:11 pm EST

chuck,

Glad you finally got your download.

Andy | 10/11/2007, 5:22 pm EST

They still haven’t sent me the download code. I emailed them yesterday but haven’t heard a thing. Am not happy with W.A.S.T.E. at all.

Thankfully a friend sent me his copy. Am enjoying it but it lacks a killer punch like ‘Paranoid Android’ or ‘Everything in its Right Place’ in my opinion.

Joel | 10/11/2007, 7:10 pm EST

By the way I couldn’t agree more Eddie. With each listen so far my opinion has grown. By tomorrow I’ll probably be saying this is the best album ever written.

DAVID | 10/11/2007, 7:33 pm EST

” Am enjoying it but it lacks a killer punch like ‘Paranoid Android’ or ‘Everything in its Right Place’ in my opinion.”

THATS WHAT IM SAYING!

DAVID | 10/11/2007, 7:37 pm EST

“It’s funny how someone mentioned Zeitgeist. This is everything the press accused that album of being: a calculated attempt at satisfying fans expectations and not very much more. And frankly, Zeitgeist was the superior album overall. Hell, I can’t even think of a standout track from this, and that hasn’t really happened on a Radiohead album before.”

Hey, when I mentioned Zeitgeist I wasnt comparing In Rainbows to it in THAT way, I was saying that I like the MUSIC of zeitgeist. I wasnt saying what the goddamned medea was saying about it, I enjoyed the music on BOTH albums.

DAVID | 10/11/2007, 7:42 pm EST

Hey, am I the only one who thinks that some songs are really great but think that the album overall is…Boring?? I think im the only one, because Nude is FANTASTIC, bodysnatches is great, but the album overall is a little…boring. Its also a little too short. It needs some more Upbeat, or at least Rock-ish songs. It has too many Mellow, Slow Jams. The orginal Reckoner would have done this album a world of good. In no way Am i saying that i dont like in rainbows. its greatm and one of the top 6 albums this year so Far, along with zeitgeist, Year Zero, Kaka, Graduation, and some others. Still, something less SLOW! does anybody have a link to download the Original Track Reckoner? my email is davidgoldfark@gmail.com.

DAVID | 10/11/2007, 7:45 pm EST

” Dave, I love the pumpkins and zeitgeist is good, but if you think Year Zero is the best electo-alt album of the year, ya need to look around more! LCD Soundsystem, Justice, Of Montreal, Fujiya and Miyagi…all superb.”

That is my bad. I take it back, I think tha tYear Zero is the second Electro-alt album this year. I admit that LCD soundsystems album is better. forget about them…or is it Just one guy?

ATOM | 10/11/2007, 7:46 pm EST

There’s no point in critiquing this album.

That’s like analyzing an orgasm.

DAVID | 10/11/2007, 7:47 pm EST

I meant to say that I forgot about them, not “forget about them” as I said in my last comment.

Luke | 10/11/2007, 7:52 pm EST

Didnt like it very much at first, after the fifth listen starting to think its great, and it makes feel like all the paths RH have taken this is a combination of all of them, not their best for me yet, but the more i listen the more i like so anything is possible

DAVID | 10/11/2007, 7:54 pm EST

Somebody just asked why no one has mentioned Icky thump… very good question! The white Strips New album Icky thump is also an amazing album that deserves to be mentioned.

Knives Out | 10/11/2007, 8:21 pm EST

I have listened to the first 6 songs totally mind blowing.People are way to critical.Everything they do is brilliant they are always evolving which is whats wrong with music today. No one else sounds like RH,they have their own sound.Album of the year!

Kevin | 10/11/2007, 8:53 pm EST

wow, “in rainbows” is another great radiohead album. “all i need”, wow.

the smashing pumpkins = greatest band in the history of the world

DAVID | 10/11/2007, 9:30 pm EST

NOW your talking :-D

Jimmy | 10/12/2007, 12:01 am EST

what a great year for new music…
queens of the stone age, white stripes, nine inch nails, the shins, smashing pumpkins and to top it off RADIOHEAD!!!

thank you radiohead for another great album

JD | 10/12/2007, 1:28 am EST

Simply put, there is no other band like them. I’ll be absorbing this record for a long time.

Andy, Atlanta, GA | 10/12/2007, 2:07 am EST

Radiohead have yet again produced an album that is at both times gorgeous and electrifying. Its seems almost organic in its purity. Its worth a listen, and is a refreshing awakening in popular music.

Estud52 | 10/12/2007, 2:28 am EST

This album was impecable. WOW!!! thats all I can say is WOW!!!

ach | 10/12/2007, 5:15 am EST

I like the new “videotape.”
It would have been redundant if it sounded exactly like the live version.
The album version is more reflective, the percussion sounds like a heartbeat.
Kinda profound if you ask me.

Richard Johnson | 10/12/2007, 7:37 am EST

Ahhhh , paid 7 pounds and took a chance .

Its so so beautiful, I’m listening to it on my ipod shuffle as I type. Gorgeous, lush moving, can’t really deciphere the lyrics but it doesn’t matter as it so so fantastic. an ambient gorgeous piece of music. As good as ANYTHING they have ever done and I have all their CD’s.

WONDERFUL

Richard Johnson | 10/12/2007, 7:41 am EST

PS. Just makes me want to cry as it so beutiful, my wife hates radhead but she amy like this one.

By the way Billy Corgan sounds like a cat being tortured when he sings live.Saw pumpkins on lollapalooza back in the day and people were leaving in droves it was horrible!

Fantastic music. Absolutely fantastic.

what??? | 10/12/2007, 12:57 pm EST

WHY IS EVERYOONE TALKING ABOUT THE SMASHING PUMPKINS ON HERE???? THIS IS ABOUT RADIOHEAD AND BILLY CORGAN DOESN”T DESERVE TO BE IN THE SAME ROOM WITH THOM YORKE!!!

MOST ACCOMPLISHED ALBUM SINCE KID A!

dude...1.2 million is A LOT | 10/12/2007, 5:30 pm EST

rumor is…the album had 1.2 million downloads ITS FIRST DAY. That measn it moved as many copies as both Kanye and 50 cent in 1 day.

That and all that money is going to the artist…not some bull shit major lable. the fact that artists only get $0.67 for a sold CD proves this is the right way to go…fight the power.

Fantastic Album…Fantastic. Rolling Stone needs to invent a new scale…because if springsteen got 5 stars, then this album deserves at least 6…if not 7.

I guess Radiohead really just needs their own rating scale, because they are surely in a league of their own.

“Someone Said on here there aren’t any punchy numbers, what about BodySnatchers?”

Yes, true, but that is only one son out of an entire album. The resy are slow…I LOVE nude as much as any other RH song, by the way.

JF | 10/14/2007, 5:55 pm EST

I did not enjoy the download-only release of this record and ordering the day of the release was not going to happen.

The next day, the boxset ordered, the first listen was a let down: tout ça pour ça? 5 listens later, I had to say In Rainbows was an OK Radiohead album. After the 10th time, I am completely sold. There is not a single weak track. Now anxioulsy awaiting the next tour (please not another small venue one, go stadium!!!) so I can see it all live, again.

Impressive, really: that is now 6 really great LPs in a row, and Pablo Honey is not crappy at all. Few bands have had a string of 7 good records, topped with something special like Talk Show Host on the side.

I love this band.

The Trickster | 10/15/2007, 10:53 am EST

This is Radiohead’s finest achievement since KID A. Amnesiac was great but a B side to KID a FOR ME. Hail was fantastic and considering it was rumored to have been recorded in just 2 weeks I urge you to go back and re listen to that one and allow it to blow your mind as well. In Rainbows, however, feels the most like a complete record to me. I also praise the band for being down right romantic on songs like Nude and All I need. This album chills me to the bone and the only thing wrong with it is that there’s not an additional 10 songs. Guess I gotta wait until December

Just thought I’d mention that if it is indeed true that IN RAINBOWS had 1.2 Mil downloads the first day that it’s not as much as Kanye it’s way more Kanye did close to a million his first week. 1.2 in a day is absurd! Kuddos to the band. How awesome is it that Radiohead raises their middle finger to Capital and parlaphone and releases their album on it’s own and now has resinged with EMI to put out the CD. Suckers! You Record Label folks are a bit daft.

I Agree about the Radiohead Kanye thing. If they had that many downloads they should be on the charts with a number 1 album. You guys at rolling stone are out of your skulls if you don’t have RADIOHEAD on the cover of your next issue for this ground breaking industry shaking achievement.

Gnarly | 10/16/2007, 1:03 am EST

After my initial listen to Rainbows, I ask “where are the great guitarists from The Bends”? Every song sounds mellow with no stand out guitar chops or energetic solos…The Bends rocked. On every release after the Bends, the guitars tapered off and blended in more and more.

Someone said on here there are no guitar based tunes on the new album. That is true pretty much but thats what they have evolved into.I think the new work is beautiful and a wonderful progression they are always changing which is what makes this band so amazing. They are constantly reinventing themselves they have a sound that is all their own.My favorite song on the new album right now is Weird Fishes/Arpeggi.No other band/artist
besides Bjork can stir up so much emotion.

An unsurprisingly great album. For some reason I keep feeling the same vibe as Love’s ‘Forever Changes.’ Hmmm. By the way, what does Weird do when it goes fishing? Why, it ‘fishes,’ of course!

Back again, the lads are. And in suchagoodway. Note to Daniel Kreps: you can be ‘partial’ to something, but not ‘keen.’ Ex.: You are keen ON ‘Nude.’ (re: notes on ‘All I Need.’ Oh, have you ever heard of someone whom perhaps ‘fishes around too much?’

AVM | 10/17/2007, 8:49 pm EST

On OK Computer, Kid A and Amnesiac – Radiohead pushed their experimental bounds. On Hail to the Thief, they threw it all up against the wall and watched it stick on a pretty damn good album.

With “In Rainbows” – its as if they have honed the experimental sound of OK & Kid A onto a concept album – and that concept is “Brilliance put to Music.” Great album. Maybe their best.

NJ | 10/19/2007, 3:38 am EST

This album is truly perfect, and is chilling. It totally takes you to far away and exotic places, and the ideas in your head rush past at an inredible speed. I’m totally in love with this album. Hail To the Thief was a great album, but also felt quite imperfect and didn’t have the flow the musical gem In Rainbows had. This album is intense! Radiohead Pride!

mrscry | 10/19/2007, 4:08 am EST

The excitement of a “new” album is lost with “In Rainbows”, because not only did I already know all the songs from listening to their live versions on the Web, but I don’t think any of these songs were taken in any interesting direction from their live versions whatsoever, and they sound much less inspiring in the studio. And there’s the simple reality that, when you become extremely familiar with a bunch of songs (as opposed to just hearing them once at a concert), their appearance on a new album really doesn’t make the album “new” in the least. None of that Kid A stuff was played before the album came out, which made their SNL appearance so damn exciting, and Amnesiac was an even bigger surprise trackwise. THOSE were good new album experiences. This is simply a rehash of stuff many fans already knew.

olia | 10/19/2007, 8:47 am EST

It grows on you with every listen…Gets in my top3 Radiohead albums, even though i feel “Nude” is kind of a disappointment compared to the original version…as far as “Reckoner” and “Videotape” are concerned, I just love them. The arrangement on most of the songs is exceptional…How do they COME UP with that stuff?? :)

Videotape and 15 step are the best songs of In Rainbows

Great shag album/fuck album/love-making album (whatever term you use). In the past few weeks it’s been added to the list of such classics as Portishead’s ‘Dummy’, NIN’s ‘Downward Spiral’, and Cure’s ‘Wish’ as albums my gf and I like to play when we make sweet, long, slow, hot, intimate, passionate, wet, deep love…

I’m definately speaking for the minority here, but as a huge radiohead fan, I’m extremely disappointed with the songs. I’ve had to force myself to listen to this all the way through. None of the songs stick in your head…they all sound like B side material that needs to be produced a little better. Having never heard the live recordings, I don’t know what to compare them to, but all I know is that I find it painfully tiring to listen to…I’ll stick to OK Computer, amnesiac, and Kid A…to me, In Rainbows is to Radiohead as In Through the Out Door is to Led Zeppelin…a big flop.

Yeah, I put OK Computer at third. IT’s probably my favorite, but thinking of Albums as a whole, KID A and In Rainbows have such a great flow. I might actually like In Rainbows better

Again a radiohead masterpiece. In rainbows is one of those admirable albums that insistingly refuse to hit you at the very first yet then conquer your taste slowly and indelibly along with your wallowing in listening. This is what radiohead is all about…And this is definitely what i expect from them…I cannot but kowtow in respect. Thank you guys for your great music.
