Hot Issue Hits and Misses: The Replacements and Wilson Phillips

10/10/07, 7:20 pm EST

Rolling Stone’s 2008 Hot Issue spotlights acts like Band of Horses and Vampire Weekend (more on that here). For the next week, we’ll be taking a look at Hot Issue hits and misses from the past twenty-one years (because nobody’s cultural thermometer is accurate all the time).

Hit: In our very first Hot Issue in 1986 (the one with Michael J. Fox on the cover), Minneapolis’ The Replacements were the inaugural group to have the title of “Hot Band” bestowed upon them. Paul Westerberg and Co. released three more albums after attaining “Hot” status, and ultimately became one of the most influential bands of the Eighties.

Miss: They were HUGE in 1990. They had three number-one singles that year, and occasionally you still hear “Hold On” in karaoke bars and in Rock Daily editors’ apartments. But truthfully, the main reason Wilson Phillips were given Hot List status was because they gainfully employed two of Brian Wilson’s daughters and offspring of The Mamas & The Papas. The group split up two years later to pursue solo careers, bad talk shows and weight loss on Celebrity Fit Club.

yeah, what JimDracula said….

anyone who doesn’t know who the replacements are should go out and buy their (appropriately-titled) best-of CD “Don’t You Know Who I Think I Was?”

it’s like a window into the best of 80’s alternative music - from post-punk garage thrash to college radio anthems like “bastards of young” or “alex chilton.”

or go to the modern encyclopedia of music history - you tube - and check ‘em out.

Jesus, I still marvel at this country’s stupidity: “Who the heck are The Replacements?” is the same as asking “What the heck is rock-n-roll?” You & Bon Jovi should start a band. The Replacements were the American equivalent of The Rolling Stones, minus the heavy bank accounts & fanfare. The Replacements could play an entire set on kazoos & still turn water into Red,Red Wine by the end of it. The Replacements were a treasure that got buried in the Sam Goody clearance bins. Hey kids, go on & salute them at the cash register. Amen.

We the Admirers of Wilson Phillips, Wendy, Carnie and Chynna, think that You “RS” don’t have enoght information about the girls. And also You miss the reunion in 2004 and the most important thing for them, first of all they are humans and have a real families with traditions, after that they are stars from a showbiz. Don’t forget Wendy’s birthday is soon.
Regards Friends

Who the heck are The Replacements?

The women of Wilson Phillips now have families of their own and still have a very loyal fan base to this day. wilsonphillipsfanspace.com/mys pace.com

Wow, I’m so happy — and relieved! — that the ‘mats are considered a hit, not a miss.
