Radiohead Reveal “In Rainbows” Download Details, We Anxiously Salivate Into Our Keyboards

When Radiohead first revealed to fans nine days ago that they’d be releasing a downloadable new album, In Rainbows, October 10th seemed like eons away. Thankfully, all the speculating about the album and how it would impact the music industry (Exhibit A) helped pass the time and, before we knew it, we looked in our e-mail inbox today to find this preemptive email from the band:

THANK YOU FOR ORDERING IN RAINBOWS. THIS IS AN UPDATE.

YOUR UNIQUE ACTIVATION CODE(S) WILL BE SENT OUT TOMORROW MORNING (UK TIME). THIS WILL TAKE YOU STRAIGHT TO THE DOWNLOAD AREA.

HERE IS SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THE DOWNLOAD:

THE ALBUM WILL COME AS A 48.4MB ZIP FILE CONTAINING 10 X 160KBPS DRM FREE MP3s.

DRM-free, so you can burn as many CDs and send it to as many friends as you want. But tomorrow morning (U.K. time)? Do they mean 10 AM (5 AM in NY) or 5 AM (midnight in NY)? Tell us, Thom! For those who are unable to download In Rainbows during this ambiguous time called “morning,” London radio station XFM will be “premiering” the new album at Noon U.K. time, or 7 AM EST. You can listen to it then via their Web site (you must have Windows Media, sorry Mac users.) Until then, check out our track-by-track preview of In Rainbows. And don’t actually salivate on your keyboard — Rolling Stone’s Joe Levy warned us about that before. Think we’re psyched about this album? Come back tomorrow, when we’ll be live-blogging our first listen to it … whatever time we actually figure out how to nab it.

I think this whole thing is awesome, even though I don’t really care for Radiohead.

But I was expecting something better than 160 kbps mp3…especially since I imagine a lot of Radiohead fans are more conscious of sound quality than the average person.

Libren | 10/9/2007, 5:03 pm EST

cantt fucking wait

Luke | 10/9/2007, 5:15 pm EST

No kidding – 160K is a joke. I was expecting more like 256K VBR at the least… come on Thom, this is no way to make a musical statement!

DAVID | 10/9/2007, 5:44 pm EST

” I imagine a lot of Radiohead fans are more conscious of sound quality than the average person.”

IS THAT AN INSULT? anyway, romor has it that Oasis is following in the footsteps od Radiohead and NIN.

tbird | 10/9/2007, 6:30 pm EST

This may or may not be true, but UK based drownedinsound posts, “a minute past midnight tomorrow morning…” OR 4:01 PST which is 32 minutes from now!!

ryan | 10/9/2007, 6:32 pm EST

They plan to sign with a company so they can make the release available in stores sometime in 08. Which leads me to believe that the 160 bit rate is to encourage fans to purchase the store bought higher quality copy.

the boney king of nowhere | 10/9/2007, 7:22 pm EST

let down at 160k

Carlos | 10/9/2007, 7:50 pm EST

So much for that 12:01 rumor. It’s already close to 50 minutes into the day in the UK and I still haven’t gotten the email with the activation code. If I had that album by tonight, Ooooooooohhh she’s gonna be niceness.

Kind of wish they posted the bit rate *before* I pre-ordered: it would have affected how I valued it. Oh well, still glad to support a new business model.

Jeff | 10/10/2007, 10:23 am EST

“In Rainbows” sounds like “Thom Yorke presents ‘The Eraser Pt. II with Special Guests, Radiohead.”
Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

her | 10/10/2007, 10:24 am EST

listen! now!!

I agree with the letdown, but not the over the top, ignorant pretentiousness. Do you ever find your friends yawning when you drone on?

Clueless | 10/10/2007, 1:22 pm EST

I went to their website the day of but couldn’t find anything. Is is too late to get a download? Congratulations to those of you who have it already.

I disagree with you entirely, Jeff. In Rainbows feels much more Greenwood oriented, with an honourable mention for Mr Selway’s excellent percussion.

Overall it has a much warmer feel to it than the previous albums. I’m amongst those who have found themselves smiling and nodding along to every track from the very first play through.

There’s an air here of – dare I say it – optimism threaded throughout each track. It’s been written elsewhere that In Rainbows sounds like a band saying a last goodbye, but it seems more to me that they’re saying ‘we’re going in search of something of great importance, anyone wanna come along for the ride?’.

It’s another excellent simultaneous step forwards with a touch of sideways shuffling.

Clueless | 10/10/2007, 1:33 pm EST

Oh. You need to go to http://www.inrainbows.com to get it. Gosh, that’s not the information I got.

Renie | 10/10/2007, 1:40 pm EST

Got it this morning with no trouble. Paid £4.75 in pre-order (which translates into about $10.00 when you add in the credit card service fee). I’m over the moon with the result. I keep thinking:

WHAT IF EVERY BAND WERE THIS GOOD?

Clueless | 10/10/2007, 2:10 pm EST

That was easy. Thanks! Ready to listen now.

Bob | 10/10/2007, 7:50 pm EST

wait a second while I go plug in my 8 track and compare the quality!

Pula in Pizda | 10/10/2007, 7:52 pm EST

Hey, I think this is great, You should try this!

Bob | 10/10/2007, 7:57 pm EST

Man, I cant seem to find this to download and I have been looking for 3 hours now. Well, I give up, I guess its back to PORN!

Willow | 10/10/2007, 7:59 pm EST

Help! When I go to http://www.inrainbows.com it requires a userid and password. Can’t find any download info on http://www.radiohead.com. Didn’t know ahead of time to preorder and get the e-mail. Just want to find out how to download!!

doug | 10/10/2007, 8:48 pm EST

I have been TRYING all day to get into the site and get a copy. For some reason I had no idea that it was coming out until i read about it today. (OOH MAYBE RECORD CO’s pay for MARKETING. HMMM!?)

Now I click on what I think is the website inrainbowsdotcom and get login and password prompt.

I don’t have one.

SO as a result of my frustration, I am (if I ever CAN get in and “pick my own price”) going to pay 2 cents as a message that I am PISSED OFF!

nick | 10/10/2007, 11:16 pm EST

just for the record

australian radio station beat both nme and xfm’s “world exclusive” playback by 4hrs

in fact we played it twice in the 4hours!

woot

Only Wunn | 10/11/2007, 12:04 am EST

When I click on the link to download, it says my authentication code is invalid!!
Anybody else get this???
I’m frustrated…

poop on a rope | 10/11/2007, 2:39 am EST

don’t you get it? they build up a database of email addresses and exploit that over the lifetime of the people in the database – which adds up to something huge if you factor in future albums, memorabilia, concert tickets… And this is a great promotional tool to boot. These songs, which are undoubtedly brilliant, will make it into the ether via word of mouth and radio ($) and eventually movie soundtracks ($) and so on. Brilliant maneuver. Hope it works perfectly.

dude...1.2 million is A LOT | 10/12/2007, 5:47 pm EST

Isn’t that your fault…not the band’s? 1.2 million people were on the ball. Be mad at yourself for not paying attention…many of us were checking daily for news (any news).

Just relax, dude. you’ll get you album soon enough and THEN you’ll be happy.

carol | 10/17/2007, 11:13 am EST

hey i heard the album many times over, i’m a bit disappointed….the live versions sounded better

Andy | 12/19/2007, 11:15 pm EST

Oh, and did not know about it. Thanks for the information …

The Li-Ion laptop battery doesn’t have a memory effect and lasts considerably longer than its predecessors.
