  • Paul McCartney and Heather Mills will agree on a divorce settlement at a private court date later this week, according to reports. British tabloids estimate Mills could walk away with between $50 and $100 million, with a source telling The Times, “This case ought to settle. It is absolutely straightforward.”
  • Jammie Thomas, the single mom who lost the first downloading case filed by the RIAA last week, has started a Web site to collect money for her legal expenses, as well as a pending appeal.

This hurts my head | 6/21/2009, 4:30 pm EST

The music industry and the record industry are very different things. I’m so sick of people saying that the music industry is dead. No it’s not. The record industry is dying, and it’s there own damn fault. How long has the internet been a usable technology? It didn’t seem to effect the porn industry that much, what’s that, the pron industry is bigger than ever, even with people downloading on the Internet!? Maybe the record labels should pull there thumbs out of their asses, and use this to their advantage. If you see something that’s free, compared to the exact same thing except 20 dollars more expensive, which one would you pick. If they’re this worried about making money, give me a product that is affordable, a worth it, because trust me, i like the feeling of opening up a new cd, and putting it in my CD player while I flip through the booklet. Unfortunately, that’s not enough these days. They need to transform their industry to better suit the CONSUMERS, not the people providing the service. P.S. Itunes charges 29 cents out of every 99 cent song sold. They made a $570 million profit in 2007.

“I answered that question in my previous response: Those people [record execs] invest the money for projects (recording & mastering albums, promotion of albums, printing the albums, album art, etc.) and tours. Do you seriously believe that all the studio time, promotion, and making 100’s of 1000’s of copies is cheap? And what about all the other people, the ones behind the scenes? Do they not deserved to be compensated for making the album you just stole a reality?

Even if you can’t put these pieces of the puzzle together, I’ve never met a situation where stealing was considered a positive action. There are more than “the artist” standing behind music.”

I also do not agree with stealing music - I am completely against it. What I do believe in is supporting “the music artist” by purchasing their music directly from them. I mentioned in my previous comment that music artists should try to eliminate the middleman “if they CAN” do it within their feasable means. Internet technology makes it possible for music artists to market themselves even if they are on a limited advertising/production budget.

Musical Jenius is right on the money.

I have never, ever heard a logical argument why it’s ok to download illegaly. People often say ‘I download to see if I like it, and if I do I buy it’ - that is 100% bullshit. You download it because you DONT want to buy it - if you want to just listen to it, there’s many ways to do so, legally.

Record companies rip off consumers argument - if that’s the case, it doesn’t mean you should steal from them and the artist. Is $10 - 20 really so much to pay for something you can listen to a 100,000 times for the rest of your life?

Of course, downloading a track here or there isn’t a big deal, but now there is a whole generation of kids who are conditioned to think that paying for music is idiotic. This is wrong and will greatly damage not just the music industry but musical artistry and integrity itself, one of the greatest commodities of humanity.

Why should a young artist devote his/her life to trying to make the next greatest album in the world when everyone’s just going to steal it? Nobody’s going to bother.

All the people downloading albums by the dozens - you’re to blame for making the world a worse place, you cheap bastards.

Re: Musical Jenius | 10/9/2007, 4:02 pm EST

What about the big record labels ripping off the music artists? I think that music artists should get rid of the middleman if they can. Why should the execs in suits continue earning massive profits from talent which is not their own to begin with? The big record labels are no different than the huge corporate advertising agencies in that respect.

Re: retarded | 10/9/2007, 11:06 am EST

“music companies have been ripping off artists and consumers for decades, f%ck them.”

So let’s just rip the artists off directly then? Huh? Listening to the radio? Commercials pay royalties. Come on man. The labels are the channel through which artists projects and tours get backed. Illegal downloading hurts everyone; the label, the stores, the studios, the fans.. hell the economy @ large. It’s completely irresponsible and disgustingly selfish. Coping out on the whole “evil label” argument is as ridiculous as people criticizing the government and then not voting because or poorly reasoned apathy with comments like “they’re all full of shit” Well? Did you take part in who should be running the show? No? So shut up, you have no say. Did you help destroy the music industry with your disgusting over consumption of illegal music? Yes? Then don’t talk about record companies rippin’ artists off.

Let’s be realistic. Stealing is stealing. There are people working hard in that industry and regardless of whether or not YOU’RE satisfied with the disbursement of money within the industry does not justify not paying for it. You give you’re 10-20 dollars or you pay your monthly subscription fee and judge the product. Let the artists, labels, and accounting worry about the the money after it leaves your hand. In the meantime you can enjoy your new music and because you paid for the CD now your favorite artist can come to your town on tour as the label has the cash to pay for it.

I am definitely flying out to Iceland and checking out that peace tower memorial in honor of Lennon. Yoko Ono is brilliant in coming up with the design and putting it in a spot where so many people can view it. There must be tons of Lennon fans over there in Iceland. I can’t think of no better place for that memorial to be in than Iceland. I am so there - regardless of cost! What a great vacation it’ll be….Iceland dammit!

Brien Comerford | 10/9/2007, 11:00 am EST

I don’t like Heather Mills but the tension she created for Macca compelled him to record two great CD’s- “Chaos and Creation in the Backyard” and “Memory Almost Full.”

Jammie Thomas is a loser and so is everyone else who thinks not paying for music is cool or okay. I hope the rest of her life is a struggle due to fees of all sorts.
