Bob Dylan’s Paintings: Work From His First-Ever Art Exhibit

10/9/07, 4:32 pm EST

As we told you in the Maroon 5 issue of Rolling Stone, the first-ever exhibit of Bob Dylan’s original paintings will open at the Kunstsammlungen art museum in Chemnitz, Germany, on October 28th. Museum director Ingrid Mössinger first came across Dylan’s paintings in his 1994 book, Drawn Blank, which contains the singer’s sketches made between 1989 and 1992. “I was fascinated to learn of Ingrid’s interest in my work,” Dylan said in a statement. “It gave me the impetus to realize the vision I had for these paintings many years ago. If not for this interest, I don’t know if I even would have revisited them.” The exhibit runs through February 3rd. Check out another painting after the jump:

I like them - and they do not surprise me. I hope this show travels. I’m just happy that Bob Dylan is flashing in the phenomenal world at the same time I am.

Check out Joni Mitchell’s work. She has created more than 500 paintings, some which adorn her album covers. Apparently her paintings are not for sale either.

EVER TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT WHAT LITERATE SCRIPTURE TONY BENNETT IS PAINTING?
IF DYLAN WERE THE BEARER OF SUCH STROKES THEY WOULD BE TOUTING HIM AS THE NEXT VAN GOGH.
BUT THERE’S A MILLION MILES BETWIXT SAN FRANCISCO AND A STONE THAT’S BEEN ROLLING ON A PATH OF LEGENDARY OXYGEN FOR HALF A CENTURY.
GET IT POLLOCK?

Loose and spontaneous style; he seems to have the natural ability for breathing life into his paintings. Many musicians are also talented visual artists. The sources and inspiration for creativity are similar.

jaap bos | 10/10/2007, 5:32 pm EST

Woody Guthrie did drawings to his Bound for Glory book that look remarkebly similar. Same non-pretentious, rather clumsy style.

i think Bob Dylans art work is really good but what doesnt he do that doesnt turn out that way

Mega Balls | 10/10/2007, 11:44 am EST

Damn I thought I was looking at some of Picasso’s paintings for a minute. This is Dylan’s? Man I think Dylan should give up his music career and go into painting full time. I’m definitely going to fly out to Germany to check them out because I have nothing better else to do. Man, I’m just simply amazed and awestruck.

Dona Lynette Stewart…who cares what you think or write as you are second rate and maybe even no-rate. dont you dare write such idiocy about my man!

sarah l. | 10/10/2007, 11:28 am EST

have you noticed that even in his paintings most of them are either directly or indirectly about me? just like his songs and writings over the years. i guess love runs deep…real deep…in our lives. its like the kind of deep a person gets on a brisk fall morning riding a meandering trail along the foothills of the rockies on a horse only half broken-in when you come to a stop, dismount, and take out a carton of zero trans-fat margarine that you plow into with an overlarge sized butter knife that you use to remove a huge dollop of the same and cascade it onto a generous hunk of home made bread then wolf it down followed closel by torents of water from a flask that kept the water lukewarm for the last few hours. yes…he still loves me.

i just bought the 2008 rolling stone calendar with the theme of women in rock…grrrrrrrrrrrrrr! but, where is my fave babe courtney love? she is HOT, HOT, HOT!!!
i was not going to open it until jan 01 / 08 but i could’nt wait so i opened it last night and…mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm (i will not add more here for the first time in plate tectonics with the rising of the river as the trees are in bloom with fauna and flora in rocky locations whilst the struggle for who will be first takes place).
i think i am going to have many more (it sure beats having to put in all the effort of chasing after a shag!).

I think Dylan has artistic talent, and I would rate him high, but no, I do not think he is the greatest artist alive. I think his genius will remain as a song writer, for profound insight into the American culture. I rather like Bob Dylan.

Sort of like what you’d see at a high school art exhibit. But, when it’s Dylan, it becomes fraught with faux something-or-other.

Brock | 10/10/2007, 9:58 am EST

I like it. Dont freak out on the dude for liking to paint and draw.

Aw give the guy a break - if you like ‘em, like ‘em. If you don’t, click away, turn the page, go back to your other bizness…. :o ) Me: a look down train tracks always puts me in a meditative mind. I’d hang that one in *my* house. & I like the other one here too.

Mighty Quinn | 10/10/2007, 2:55 am EST

Bob is the greatest painter who ever lived.

George | 10/10/2007, 2:36 am EST

Norman Raeben would be proud

The Outsider | 10/9/2007, 9:07 pm EST

All his paintings will be considered genius just because HE painted them, and then will eventually be sold for ridiculous sums of money.

After watching someone pay $15,000 for a Jerry Garicia toilet, the sky’s the limit!!!

Billy | 10/9/2007, 5:27 pm EST

Don’t quite your day job jerky!
