Single Minded: Wu-Tang Meets the Beatles, Plus Notorious B.I.G., Battles, Robyn Hitchcock and More

10/5/07, 1:21 pm EST

Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more.

Wu-Tang Clan, “The Heart Gently Weeps” [Not a Cover - As Rock Daily first told you]
Cover? Interpolation? Interpretation? Imagination? Who cares. This song is proof positive that the Wu is taking this comeback seriously.

Battles feat. Joell Ortiz, “Lyendecker” [Remix]
We don’t know what kind of cosmic machine brings together an uber-indie math rock outfit with an underground New York rapper, but we hope someone is gassing that thing up hourly. We look forward to the Liars/Lil Boosie collabo.

Notorious B.I.G. [Live Freestyle – at age seventeen]
It’s like, you wanna get excited that people like Sean Kingston and Soulja Boy are achieving such dominance at such a young age; and then footage of a seventeen-year-old Biggie Smalls freestyling in front of a deli in Brooklyn surfaces, and everything snaps right back into perspective.

Robyn Hitchcock [Live Beatles & Kinks Covers]
Hitchock puts his signature surrealist spin on “Strawberry Fields,” “Penny Lane” and eight others. The next time he needs samples, the RZA should just take a tape recorder to a Robyn Hitchcock show.

Halloween Mixtape [Jammin Ja Sounds]
Distinctly Jamaican Sounds is unveiling a Halloween mixtape track by track, with a new song up every day. The scariest thing about it? The last track is going to be Snow covering “Semi-Charmed Life.”

I don’t know who in the hell this J. Edward Keyes dude is but dude!

I was going to post about how cool that Biggie freestyle is then I got sidetracked listening to some spooky reggae tunes…I haven’t even mentioned that sick battle and Wu yet!

Nice stuff man, thanks
