Peter Travers Video Review: “The Heartbreak Kid,” “Michael Clayton”

10/4/07, 6:57 pm EST

Bail on Ben Stiller’s The Heartbreak Kid, the latest Farrelly Brothers flick, says Rolling Stone movie critic Peter Travers. At the other end of the spectrum, there’s Michael Clayton, a stellar film in which George Clooney loses the charm and lets himself fall apart onscreen in an Oscar-worthy performance. I know George is a talented actor, but he seems like such a dick in real life.

BTW, RRD, what does Clooney, Ben Dickhead have to do with music, anyway?

Damn, well, I guess I will have to hope that Peter Travers wouldn’t know a funny movie if he saw it…I had high hopes for Heartbreak Kid, what with the Farrelly Bros and Stiller being unencumbered by a PG-13 rating and all…..

I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF WITNESSING GEORGE CLOONEYS REMARKABLE AND DEVATATING PERFORMANCE IN MICHAEL CLAYTON DURING A SNEAK PREVEIW.
HE IS NOT ONLY THE FINEST AMERICAN ACTOR WE HAVE, BUT HE IS ALSO A VOCAL ADVOCATE OF DECENCY AND DIGNITY.
THIS FILM IS BEYOND DOUBT, THE FINEST THE LAST 12MONTHS AND NEEDS TO BE SEEN BY ANYONE WITH ANY CINEMATIC INTEREST WHATSOEVER.
THE DIALOUGE IS SEVERE AS ARE THE PERFORMANCES AND THE TASK WAS HELMED BY A FIRST TIME DIRECTOR WITH INATE SENSABILITIES.
A NO LOSE EVENING OF ART AND ARTICULATION.

The Heartbreak Kid would be on my list of movies I wish I had never, ever seen. That bad! I had been looking forward to this movie because I loved the original I I love Ben Stiller. If you like good movies & entertainment you won’t find it here.

Jerry Stiller kicks off this baleful cinematic crapheap with a very, very bad joke. And when Jerry Stiller ain’t funny – you know you’re in for an ode to masochism. This remake is terrible. It’s gross. It boasts one of the most excretable scenes in movie history (hint: a jellyfish and a psycho newlywed bride are involved. I’ll say no more.) At that point, I walked out. So I can’t really judge the last 25% of the flick. The original 1972 offering with Charles Grodin was infinitely better. But the toiletbowl humor in this remake – and the utter lack of class therein – almost made me long for the days of “Humanae Vitae” and the bombast of the late Archbishop Fulton Sheen. That’s how bad this remake was (and, I’m sure, still is).

I was looking forward to seeing this movie – but it was boring…very unfunny! At one stage we looked at each other and said do you want to go? Maybe I had too high expectations from Ben…
