Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Break Out Twenty-Three Song Hit List as “Magic” Tour Kicks Off

10/3/07, 1:38 pm EST

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band kicked off their fall tour last night at the Hartford Civic Center in Connecticut with “Radio Nowhere,” the first single off their new album Magic, then launched into a twenty-three-song set that didn’t veer significantly from the set list they played during last week’s rehearsal shows. In addition to gold-standard Springsteen hits like “Darkness on the Edge of Town” and “Badlands,” the band also performed “Town Called Heartbreak” from Patti Scialfa’s latest solo album, Play It As It Lays. Check out the full set list after the jump, then scroll through our photo gallery documenting the gig.

This is a very strange set list (not bad, just strange)

Three from Born To Run (but only one single)and not Thunder Road
Heavy album tracks from the late 70’s + early 80’s (Ties, Reason, Badlands, Promose Land)
One from BOTUSA (and not one of the 8 singles)
Nothing 1984-2000
(remember Tunnel of Love…anyone??
Three from The Rising (the three singles)
Nothing from 2002-2006 ( I get that, artists never play stuff from the last record)

9 songs from the new CD (is that right??)

When was the last time an major artist (with a catalog) played shows with NINE new songs?

Last one I can remember was Sting in 1991 when he did The Soul Cages in it’s entirety

Excellent. Can’t wait to hear Thundercrack and Reason to believe in its new arrangement. Plus all the new songs. See you in Philly Bruce and the gang.

Great show Bruce looked like he was 18!

Mega Balls | 10/3/2007, 2:50 pm EST

Yeah I was at this show and I must say it was good, but weird too. Bruce kept grabbing his crotch and told the audience to “suck it” right before playing “The Rising”. I couldn’t believe it. Then Bruce yelled out to the audience that if they’re any cops out there to get the hell out of the arena. I was appalled. There was even the time when he took his microphone and stuck it to his ass and let out a thunderous fart for no reason whatsoever.

Right after playing “Born to Run” he yelled out “that one goes out to all the terrorists, long live Bush.” He performed his music very well but he looked like he was pissed or on something.

Factotum | 10/3/2007, 2:55 pm EST

Fuck Bruce!

Jungleland | 10/3/2007, 2:57 pm EST

Answering Jungleland ;) Bruce has always played songs from his new records. When The Rising came out, on opening night he played 11 of the 15 songs off that record.

The past few U2 tours have reliend extensively on their latest album

Ta Ta Toothy | 10/3/2007, 3:27 pm EST

Awwww, ain’t that sweet. He played one of his wife’s songs too. So in essence he was trying to promote and get people to buy her album too. How many of you Bruce fans are also Patti Scialfa fans? Yeah, thought so. By playing his wife’s “Town Called Heartbreak”, that’s one less song he could have played from his collection. And people spent lots of cash to see him and the band play. What a nice husband and wife team.

This was my 18th Bruce show, and I’ve never seen the energy drop at one of his shows like it did when they did “Town Called Heartbreak,” a brutally awful, completely cliche song sung by a woman whose voice sounds like a bag full of cats being beaten by a pick axe. Hopefully by the time he rolls into Boston and I see him again he’s dropped this brilliant mistkae from the set.

I dont know what show you people saw but the show last nite was awesome. It was my 13th show and it was not his best performance but it was a great show. The new songs are in your face rock songs and he played them well. Night and She’ s the one were the best back to back to get the show really rocking and 9 songs of the new album is not that much he did the same during the rising. The Town Called Heartbreak sucked but it let me and my buddy go on a beer run. Overall great show i dont know what some of u people saw but that was great

WHAT IS WITH THIS COAL MINER ACCENT BRUCE DEVELOPED?
MAKES ME CRINGH

kcv | 10/4/2007, 9:29 am EST

american land IS from his last record if i am not mistaken, right? well, i like the new lp, i just haven’t fully absorbed it yet.

JJJ | 10/4/2007, 12:05 pm EST

I don’t know where the coal miner accent came from, either. Hell, he grew up in Freehold. At least it’s not as annoying as Madonna’s British accent.

My first show was Carter Barron in DC a few weeks before BTR was released in ‘75. A few hundred million dollars and three plus decades later he is still rocking and I am still listening. What has changed; in his 20’s he sang with the intensity and passion of the unknowns of youth and “growing up”. The music of late he writes songs that sounds like he knows it all and has free rein to shove it down our throats. I feel sorry for Patti; putting her in the show’s spotlight is like putting an 11 year-old in to play next to Alex Rodriquez. My brother-in-law died last night and I listened to Magic for some hope; I couldn’t get even finish it. It was Ghost Repeater by Jeff Foucault that got me through the night….

As a reformed Bruce addict can safely say, I’m off the bruce juice once and for all. His hokey coal miner affectations really annoy me. He’s become a caricature of himself. Hang it up Bruce, you had your day and that day is over.

Mejutah | 10/6/2007, 5:18 pm EST

I just bought Bruces’ album yesterday , Damn what a shame ! Only one or 2 good songs , the rest sounded the same . I’m glad i didn’t buy his expensive tickets …
Like they say , ” Rich man in a poor mans clothes “

Going to see the Boss next Tuesday in LA with my 14 yr old son. I’m a SoCal rambler from NJ, and a Bruce fan since the 70’s. I see a lot of negative comments about his attitude, his set selection, and his inclusion of one of Patty’s songs. I’ve seen him at Dodger Stadium, Concord, Sacramento, Denver, Detroit, Jersey, the Garden, and probably one or two other places I don’t recall. You won’t find many bigger fans than me. My take on him is that he’s frustrated that his words aren’t revered by more Americans. His tour against Bush attracted sold out shows but not much at the ballot box. Republican politicians sing Born in the USA without even knowing the words or realizing their meaning. Scalpers gouge his fans dispite his effort of holding back day-of-the-show tickets. He selects the set list before each show as he feels that night. If he wants to sing one of his wife’s songs, so be it. I think I get it. As an artist he has achieved greatness because he matches heartfelt lyrics to music in a way unlike most. As an American poet he puts down in words the thoughts and notions that ring true with a struggling class of hard working people. If you are one of the people who can think of nothing better to say than negative comments, you are the ones who need to listen the most carefully. He is the Boss for good reason.
And to you, Bruce. Keep rockin’ my friend. You know we love you and appreciate you.

A huge Bruce fan, who has single-handedly, gotten me through (and continues to do so) the
roughest and lonliest times of my long 59 year-old life,
rocked the house in Oakland last night, but I longed for the revivalist tone of previous shows. Couldn’t understand what he was saying when he did talk to the audience, which wasn’t much, and he didn’t spotlight and give the E-Street Band their props, as he usually does. A Bruce show IS a Bruce show, but I’ve been transcended to a much higher plateau in previous shows.
