This summer, five Muslim punk bands from around the country united to buy a used school bus on eBay and hit the road for a ragtag tour across America. The bus — painted green and stenciled with little red camels — hit punk flophouses, mosques and the Islamic Society of North America’s annual conference (where the mohawked and pierced crew was ejected). Rolling Stone caught up with the tour in Chicago. Click here to hear more about it.

Muslim women are cooler: see haale.com (www.myspace.com/haale) and purevolume.com/jungli
Dana | 10/5/2007, 1:05 am EST
cooler than who? aren’t you not allowed to wear the kind of clothes you want and you have to be completely submissive to hateful and dominant men. Doesn’t sound very cool to me.
Muslima | 10/5/2007, 6:33 pm EST
Dear Dana, having your tits out, getting paid less than some tool guy and having to be told youre selfish for not revolving around him isn’t cool. Guess where that happens? In Christian Country U S of A! Rape is fun too–and getting roofied, the national pasttime of idiots. That’s fun! Let’s rock!!!! Love, Allahette
Muslima | 10/5/2007, 6:45 pm EST
and no one–I repeat no one–has as much style as the girl rockers mentioned below. britney is an embarrasment to my gender. god bless america. and why is rolling stone showcasing central casting mohawks when these women have recognition from the likes of David Byrne and Sean Lennon. John Lennon would be very uspet about this….peace! Alhamdolellah!
SaveTheCamels | 10/5/2007, 7:51 pm EST
Dewd, Muslima’s right. I’d like to visit Jungli’s subcontinent if ya know what I mean.

At least I have the freedom to choose. And if ANY man tried to make me do something against my will, I would kick his ass. If you want to live in a way where you’re told what to do in every facet of your life, then have at it. Personally, it sounds like slavery to me and can you keep it.
Dana A New York Doll | 10/5/2007, 9:21 pm EST
that’s strange
PF | 10/7/2007, 8:48 pm EST

Hey, don’t blame us that western media can barely fathom the thought of punk rock which happens to feature some muslims singing about fucked up politics being slung at us. Gimmick? Try white america catching a glimpse of a movement that doesn’t fit their stereotype of muslims, and feeling the urgent need to broadcast images of us everywhere. Is it us conforming to western values? Or is it us slipping in through the backdoor to scream “SUICIDE BOMB THE GAP” to the world? This would only be a gimmick if we were making money off of it, but we’re not. We’re getting a message out there that you can’t handle, and so you attach a label to it.

hey dana, you obviously don’t know shit. where did you get that shit about muslim women hAving to be submissive? the media is fucking with your head. just because you see muslim women portrayed as submissive to men in the media, doesn’t mean that is how it really is. sure some men are assholes and are in positions of power, they twist the religion so that they have more power and use it against women. but those are just the assholes that twist the religion around. it’s not like slavery for the majority of us. i have a fucking voice, no one tells me who to be, and i damn well where what i want. i happen to be a feminist you know, and the muslim men in my life are respectful and treat me equally. do you even know what the Taqwacore movement is about?! it’s muslim kids like myself who are fucking tired of not fitting in. we are tired of being told whaT TO do by our parents, and tired of how people portray us to be before they even get to know us. there is a muslim girl band called secret trial five. they have mohawks and do what ever they want, now do they seem like the submissive slaves you and the rest of the world seem to think muslim women are?! my friend is the lead singer of al-thawra she is a 16 year old muslim chick who’s band has been compared to slipknot! she is in the band with older guys. does she seem submissive to you? the women that are abused, ANd made to be submissive are a minority, and it is because of the men that have power and abuse it. so don’t and go insult my religion without knowing the facts.
MUHAMMAD | 3/16/2008, 1:38 pm EST
Does the people in your band and the other muslims bands pray and do everythimg else like other muslims.
package rebellion | 12/26/2008, 6:09 am EST
`compared to slipknot’….how unpunk is that???
ugly people singing ugly songs, giving life to a white trash mans wet dream(knight)i would even be tempted to say its a jewish conspiracy, but the jews are alot more sophisticatred than that..
There are thousands of punks who happen to be muslim all over the world, long before knights book, they know better than to mix punk and islam.
`The first movement that I’ve seen to truly embody the idea of punk in twenty years.’
dont be silly,it should be 30 years..not 20..besides its all marketing..it was even that way 30 years ago..i still remember..

SubhanAllah! I left the British Punk Scene to become Muslim. You guys are crazy if you think this is acceptable in Islam. Allah (SWA) has the power to guide and misguide and you should be afraid that you are being misguided and pray for guidance.
farrah | 4/27/2009, 7:05 pm EST
in regards to the “dialogue” about what is cool and what isn’t cool, you know what ISN’T cool? racism. and whenever you make sweeping generalizations about a minority group which is not in control of their own media depictions (for example, muslims are not making the media that is depicting them in the united states), that’s racism. and racism is really uncool dana.
so you don’t have to think any of these punk bands are cool, and you don’t even have to think the idea of muslim punk is cool (which i’m not really blown away by since i’m an old soul/afrobeat kind of chick), but don’t be a racist and broadcast stereotypes when you don’t really know what you’re talking about.

Keep doing what makes you happy as a person, whether its music, art, poetry, or just living. Do what you as an individual want to do, just dont try and bring your thoughts or deep religion dialogue on to someone else and try to force them to convert, it will never happen here in the states. I believe in one GOD, he is my personal Lord and savior.
Taqwa | 10/6/2009, 9:08 pm EST
This is ain’t any message of forcing anyone or labeling any religion or any defined place for some people. It’s freedom to develope as you want and simply be yoursel… It’s about the struggle for young muslims in america.
peace and blessings with the muslims punks!
