New Radiohead Album Coming Out October 10th

9/30/07, 9:29 pm EST

Radiohead have been teasing fans with cryptic clues about their seventh studio album for weeks, and now they have made a surprising announcement via their Dead Air Space Web site: The album, titled In Rainbows, is coming out October 10th. As of now, there has been no news about the band signing to a label (their deal with Capitol ended after the release of 2003’s Hail to the Thief), and In Rainbows is only available for sale via the Web site Inrainbows.com (for now). Fans can either order discboxes containing the new album on CD and vinyl, a second CD with additional tracks, artwork and photos, a lyric booklet and a DRM-free download (the package will ship on or before December 3rd but the download will activate October 10th) or a DRM-free download, which will be active as of October 10th. The price: interesting. The discbox costs 40£; the download is pay what you wish (plus a transaction fee). UPDATE: A press release now indicates “Radiohead are currently planning a traditional CD release of In Rainbows for early 2008.”

HOLY HELL! Amazing!

eeeeeeeeeeeeee | 9/30/2007, 10:27 pm EST

F.Y.I the download costs as much as you want to pay.

For instance, if one wishes to pay nothing for A NEW RADIOHEAD ALBUM, it works.

I bought the set. yaaaay.

yeaaahh | 10/1/2007, 12:54 am EST

Hell yeah!! The new Radiohead album is just around the corner, amazing!

However I don’t know from where the hell I will get the money for the discbox.8(

Notorious REG | 10/1/2007, 9:57 am EST

Just…wow. Radiohead remains ahead of the curve.

Brian | 10/1/2007, 10:05 am EST

Possibly the best news I have heard in a very long time

Oh. I Messed Myself | 10/1/2007, 10:14 am EST

This band knows how to please fans. If nothing else, you gotta give ‘em this.

Keith Talent | 10/1/2007, 10:35 am EST

Yay!!!

Although I’m not sure about the title-sounds like a dodgy prog rock album.

Spicolli | 10/1/2007, 10:42 am EST

Prog rock rules, even if it is dodgy…

Joel | 10/1/2007, 11:02 am EST

Anyone having any issues accessing the inrainbows site?

trebor | 10/1/2007, 11:04 am EST

I’m not getting anything. I just see the in rainbows three times and radiohead, which gives me a link to dead air space. :( no link to buy it.

Rob | 10/1/2007, 11:13 am EST

Hope this ones better than Hail to Thief.

Rob | 10/1/2007, 11:14 am EST

erm…Hail to the Thief…

try it again | 10/1/2007, 11:17 am EST

Do yourself a favor, dude. Find some time today, and spin “Hail” a couple of times; you might be pleasantly surprised. That’s really underrated. I think it’s great, really!

nin | 10/1/2007, 12:04 pm EST

you should pay for the downloads at least a decent price, cuz i think they’re trying to raise some money…dunno…

luke | 10/1/2007, 12:15 pm EST

ace!

muddy.... | 10/1/2007, 12:16 pm EST

Considering the band only makes 17 cents off a record sold in stores… this is brilliant.

Briley Style | 10/1/2007, 12:21 pm EST

Best News Of The YEAR!

Edric | 10/1/2007, 12:27 pm EST

This news makes my day!!!!!

George | 10/1/2007, 12:40 pm EST

Hell, they can’t run the bandwidth they’re getting on their store so many people are trying to pre-order. This is ridiculous. I’m going to go call all my friends. I’m paying 15 bucks. I think I’d go so far as to pay $25 for a new double CD radiohead album in stores. Anymore than that and I’d have to split it with a friend.

Will | 10/1/2007, 12:50 pm EST

Great news to say the least! However the download appears to be only one cd and the box set appears to be 2.

Lucifer Scam | 10/1/2007, 12:57 pm EST

You can only download the first disc. The bonus stuff comes with the pack. I gotta save my pennies for the pack! As a result, I am not paying much for the download next week. Maybe $5, but they are geting $81 more from me for the pack. It’ll also tell me if its worth it. if it blows, then I’ve only spent $5…which is still better than pirating! This is a good idea all around…

OM (radiohead) G | 10/1/2007, 1:01 pm EST

did anyone get an email or any kind of confirmation when they bought the discbox?

mckrazy | 10/1/2007, 1:35 pm EST

Drew | 10/1/2007, 1:47 pm EST

So I assume if you buy the download package (or don’t buy if you want) then you only get CD1 and CD2 is exclusively for those who buy the boxset. Anyone know for sure?

Bangers-N-Mash | 10/1/2007, 2:12 pm EST

I pre-odered my download last night for one english pound. I plan on sending for the disc box when I have the money. Radiohead are musical AND marketing geniuses

Brent E. | 10/1/2007, 2:14 pm EST

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of in my life. I understand that Radiohead are not too fond of record companies and and the like, but come on. Instead of being able to buy the CD with the artwork and packaging, now we are forced to download it if we want it now, or otherwise wait until they decide to release it on CD, whenever that might be. Is it that hard to negotiate a record deal that will meet Radiohead’s demands and requests? Or, are they being as difficult as they choose to be about it. It just seems odd to me that THE ERASER (which sucked) was released on XL Records last year, on CD and vinyl, with no problem. And now, after fans have waited almost 5 years for a new album from the band, you have to jump through a bunch of useless hoops to get it. At this point, I’m so irritated by this whole thing, I really don’t care anymore.

zennnn | 10/1/2007, 2:15 pm EST

yes, from the information we all currently have, the second cd is available on the discbox set only (which will be uploaded to the ‘net as soon as it’s released).

I’m wondering if they’ll give the discbox purchasers the second CD as a digital download too, but i’m not crossing my fingers.

steve | 10/1/2007, 3:23 pm EST

good to see they’ll be releasing a stand-alone CD eventually, HOPEFULLY with the second CD included, or at least sold separately. until then I’ll download the bugger and throw ‘em 10 bones.

Sammy | 10/1/2007, 3:50 pm EST

A band such as Radiohead, decides to GIVE THEIR NEW RECORD AWAY… FOR FREE!… and all Brent E can do is bitch about them not signing to a label. “The Eraser” was pretty damn good for a solo album recorded on a laptop, you fucking idiot. This ass-clown might be the most stupid son of a bitch I’ve ever seen posting on RS, AND THAT’S PRETTY FUCKING BAD considering the dumb fucks who are “musically retarded”. Hey douche, you have disgraced yourself, your family, and your master.

Furby | 10/1/2007, 3:57 pm EST

How the hell do I get CD 2? I’m not playing £40, I don’t have a record player. I hope they release it as a CD in 2008.

Still, new album! Woop!

coldhead | 10/1/2007, 4:06 pm EST

I wasted no time ordering my discbox. This was great news to wake up to this morning. And to an earlier question I got my confirmation e-mail within minutes.

Lenny Bruce | 10/1/2007, 4:14 pm EST

That’s right, Sammy. Rip their fuckin’ heads off!

yeaaahh | 10/1/2007, 5:23 pm EST

Anyone knows how the pay system will be for the download? People are supossed to pay by credit card or what?

DAVID | 10/1/2007, 6:42 pm EST

Hey! Trebor, If you wanna download the Album, CLick on One of the buttons on the site BELOW the Dead air space link. Click onn One of the buttons that say in rainbows.

Sales and Marketing | 10/1/2007, 7:29 pm EST

OMG! WTF!? You can’t “generate revenue” by letting STUPID fans decide whether or not to pay for thier favorite bands album! There is no research on that dollar! What are Radiohead trying to do, cut out the middle-man who demands a significant percentage of the “revenue generated” by their creative hard work? By the way, if you’re in “Sales” or “Marketing”, kill yourself.

if you are who I think you might be, you’re very edgy now!!! I like it!

I’d like to think I might have had a little something to do with that.

Charles | 10/1/2007, 8:19 pm EST

I’m really on the fence here. I don’t mind paying the extra cash for the discbox because I want the extra tracks but I don’t have nor care to have a record player so in a sense I’m paying $81 for the extra CD. I’m willing to wait for the domestic release of the physical media version but I have no idea if the second CD will be included with that. Anybody know?

No offense, I’m supportive of the band doing this but if the CD2 is only ever available as part of the discbox then it smacks of the same crap iTunes does with their album only tracks, etc.

to brent | 10/1/2007, 8:41 pm EST

what hoops to you have to jump through. this makes perfect sense. if they went throught a label, first off you would have to wait another needless six months before it was released, second, they’d make less, as another person mentioned, band don’t make money off cd’s they never have, the most they’ve ever made is a dollar. they make money off touring. labels expoilt and profit from them for essentially not doing to much. they are estabilished so they don’t need the press. and if you pay $2 they make more money than they would through a label. They also know that it would be free on the net 30 minutes after it was released on hard copy through a label. in fact they would have to send a copy to hundreds of other people inbetween getting it ready that there would have been a leak and it would have been out for free before the relases date has it has been for the last two albums. radiohead have brains, they are logical. this all makes perfect sense, they are genius.

LP lover | 10/1/2007, 11:21 pm EST

I’ll be more than happy to take the Vinyl Album off your hands!

Rhett | 10/1/2007, 11:35 pm EST

i completely agree …. the guys from radiohead are far from idiots … they have a plan for what they are doing…. they have thought this out … and if you support them by paying for the downloads (which could be free) …there might be hope for future albums.

Christian | 10/2/2007, 7:09 am EST

I’m definately ordering my diskbox as soon as I can….No point listening to poor quality downloads…
Can’t wait – Chrismas will come early this year (around the 6 December, if the postal services do their job right for once)….

Brent E. | 10/2/2007, 9:00 pm EST

Now that I have made what some of you think is the most god-awful post a few days back, let me take the time to explain myself. Radiohead are an awesome band, one whose work will stand the test of time. I feel that artists that are as talented as Radiohead should be compensated in revenue by releasing their music to be purchased by the public. I guess I do not mind paying for good music. I do not own an IPOD, and I can honeslty say that I have never downloaded not one album, song, etc. I want to be able to go to a store, by the CD, and purchase music the way I have for the past 20 years. Is that so wrong to want? However, I guess that this will be out of the question. In regards to my comment about saying that “The Eraser” sucked, that was rude of me. I’m just not a fan of electronic music at all. Sorry about that. Anyway, I hope that there is at least one record company that can appease Radiohead and give them an offer that they cannot pass up, so that we all will have a chance to hear the new album, even those people who do not have a credit card or access to a computer.

MM | 10/2/2007, 10:14 pm EST

I’ll plunk down my money and take my chances on anything Radiohead does. The’ve given so many so much already, that I feel almost obligated to show my undying support.

Even if it’s not their best, I know for sure that they’ll be moments of brilliance that I won’t want to miss.

h_e_n_r_y | 10/3/2007, 12:09 pm EST

…this should put to rest any doubts about Radiohead being the greatest band in the world.

[unbelievable.]

Hazydave | 10/3/2007, 2:30 pm EST

Well, I would have paid around $8.00 for the download, which is about what I’d pay anyone for downloaded music… unless they offered it uncompressed, which would match the CD, and thus, be worth about as much.

But I sprang for the boxed set. I was on the fence a little… I’m not a vinyl junkie, though I do have the “special” version of most of the recent R.E.M. albums. But seeing this largely going directly to Radiohead, it’s not some marketing weasel’s idea, I figured I’d go for the pricey release.

BRILLIANT!

yeh, i just ordered the discbox, amazing stuff i think; well the price of 40pounds could be discussed, but i’ll see it as a tribute to radiohead and, well guys, good music wanna be paid for….

get with it brent e. | 10/6/2007, 9:31 am EST

yo brent e.!
Get with the times, bro. The 90’s are over man, it’s the Information Age. Radiohead is a progresive forward thinking band and consequently old farts like you get left behind. You sound like that clche old guy tlking about th days he could get a hershey bar for a nickle. There’s still time man, get with it.

As for Eraser…well I’m not surprised you didn’t get it. It’s a concept album about Peak Oil. Look at that album one more time from that perspective…

…this is fucked up, fucked up…black swan.

I am listening to In Rainbows for the first time and it is layered similar to OK Computer and in ways as haunting as some of the darker cuts on HTTT. I also hear a bit of later day Beatles in the mix, Sgt. Pepper era.

Nude is a standout and is among one of the more beautiful and haunting songs I have heard in years. Another track that has caught my attention is Reckoner which in earlier renditions was quite different.

Radiohead have clearly done something ground breaking with this release and with their distribution method have exposed their music to a whole new audience in the process.

Amazing…

erm | 10/10/2007, 1:09 pm EST

Is anyone having trouble getting on to the inrainbows website to purchase the download? because it is not loading for me

Jme | 10/10/2007, 8:25 pm EST

It won’t load for me either…damn web site!!! I wanna listen!

sjs | 7/19/2009, 2:58 pm EST

Should have got this when the pick-your-price thing was still around. (I got it on iTunes instead.) GREAT album by the way!
