Gods of Rock Deliver the Goods: Van Halen Kick Off Reunion Tour

9/28/07, 9:07 am EST

“You’re going to see some tears when they hit that stage,” said Modesto, California’s Matt Caramella as he waited for Van Halen with David Lee Roth to hit the stage for the first time since 1984 in Charlotte, North Carolina, last night. Sure enough, tears streamed down his face as the lights went down and Eddie Van Halen appeared on the darkened stage, shirtless and wearing faded green Army fatigue shorts and white sneakers, cranking out the first few riffs of the band’s reconstituted Kinks cover “You Really Got Me.” By the time Roth came out, wearing tight black leather pants, a polka-dotted shirt and white sports jacket with gaudy black embroidery, Caramella was in fist-pumping ecstasy. “These guys are my heroes,” he shouted over the din, “the gods of rock & roll.”

(Click here for photos from this show.)

And for more than two hours, the gods delivered. From “You Really Got Me” to “Runnin’ with the Devil,” “Dance the Night Away,” “Oh, Pretty Woman,” “Unchained,” “Hot for Teacher,” “Ice Cream Man,” “Panama,” guitar-god solo “Eruption,” “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love,” “Jump” and about thirteen more classic Van Halen tunes, the band was in top form for their long-overdue reunion. “I’m not going to waste time BS-ing around tonight,” Roth told the delighted, sold-out crowd of predominantly middle-aged guys in white- and blue-collar work clothes and gals who’d retrieved their Eighties bustiers for a night of original hair-metal nostalgia. But he was lying: Roth was at his BS best.

His hair may be shorter and crow’s feet longer, but Diamond Dave is every bit the Vegas showman that he was two decades ago, when he left Van Halen for an ill-fated solo career that took him from cheesy bad to train-wreck worse. He showed his gift for gab — and flamboyant duds — from the get-go, imitating Mick Jagger and martial arts moves, smiling like a clown, riding a giant microphone. And despite old wounds, his bandmates seemed charmed by their new old lead singer. Eddie Van Halen, switching from his signature Peavey “Wolfgang” guitar to his old, red- and white-striped “Frankenstein,” nuzzled up to Roth several times. And drummer Alex Van Halen, sporting his trademark white headband, pounded his kit with a constant smile. If original bassist Michael Anthony was missed at first, it wasn’t long before Eddie’s sixteen-year-old son, Wolfgang Van Halen, had the crowd in the palm of his hands. The teenaged slap-style bass player held his own with style, grace and grit, throwing out picks to the audience as he walked the catwalk into the crowd, his bass in hand, during “Atomic Punk.” There were some bumps along the way, including a few times when Roth missed his vocal cues, but the audience could not have cared less.

All four members looked healthy and fit, particularly Eddie, who has gone from drug-addict weird to middle-age handsome since the original band’s aborted reunion of 1996. Even young Wolfgang seemed to have lost some of the baby fat he showed in earlier photographs with the band. And then there was Diamond Dave, who has evolved from rock & roll cool to old-Vegas hip with style, grace and his eternally smart sense of flamboyant irony.

“Did this really happen?” Matt Caramella shouted as the house lights went up following the encore, “Jump.” By then, his tears had mingled with the sweat running down his face from his buzz cut. “Man, that was like a fucking dream.”

Purple Elves whom play Charvels, say a New Album is called “Time Machine”. Actually recording it so it sounds like the first album. The guitars, bass, drums, vocals and acoustics will really have the flavor of 1978. It will sort of be like a “Time Machine” because you will actually feel like the hard rocking sound was recorded in 1978… Could this be true??? Probably Yes No …

Georgia Peach | 12/7/2007, 5:20 pm EST

HELL YES!!!!! ATLANTA AND JACKSONVILLE FLORIDA!!!! My Christmas and Birthday are COMPLETE!!! Waldo, I am coming for you!!!!

VanLikesVan | 12/6/2007, 7:26 am EST

GM Place, Vancouver
Dec 5/07

Admittedly, I splurged on a ticket…but Van Halen gave Vancouver one hell of a concert!!!

VH exceeded expectations and tore down the full house. Eddie was astounding, and DLR’s voice was top notch, nailing it on every song. The concert’s sound quality/clarity was also incredibly good, especially for a large venue.

The cradle still rocks!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone, by the way. God Bless and Protect our Troops.

Un, nevermind…just checked VH website…I WILL NOT be attending THAT FL show…bad town for me.

GP | 11/21/2007, 2:20 pm EST

Un, trying to find some “local” shows as we speak…checking Ticketmaster…not showing anything. Where else should I look?

Unrealistic | 11/21/2007, 11:58 am EST

are you hitting the Florida shows Georgia Peach?

Georgia Peach | 11/16/2007, 1:27 pm EST

Sir Waldo, waiting for Spring with bated breath!

Why doesn’t your website work?

Waldo | 11/15/2007, 12:16 am EST

Peach, its the gals like you that make what I do a hobby, not a chore. Every man needs something to keep his hands busy, Ed the guitar, Al the Drums, so I have to find friends…and I seem to make friends easily, always a talent I had. I win some over, I turn some off. I can’t spend the extra energy worrying, after you’ve been atop a mountain, contracted jungle diseases, a bad review, a simple rejection, its not going to change my point of view, I’m looking for the next conquest. How can I get that low cut wearin’ girl in my clutches. Its these adventures that give perspective to the Rock n Roll live style. Women have been a hobby since puberty. I saw Marilyn Monroe, Betty Page, knew I wanted to follow the line up those stockings, see where they ended, so to speak. I’m on the road, I think these women can sense I’m a friendly sort of guy. And why not, I aim to please. I’ve always looked different, & that before I even hit Kennedy Airport, never mind when I hit the stage. So blow off some steam, enjoy the Van Halen tribal community, the experience…so Peach, give me a try, I’m your last loose end. Let’s see if you can still get a head turnin’, spare no detail. I can guarantee, we’ll be down south come the New Year…til then, California, home sweet home.

Georgia Peach | 11/14/2007, 2:49 pm EST

Unrealistic, I’m sorry you had a bad time at your show….maybe you had wrong people with you & not enough funny stuff! Crowd being subdued possibly worked against VH. Curious to get Sir Waldo’s take on it. Also, he hasn’t talked to ME in a few days…..:)

Unrealistic | 11/14/2007, 10:24 am EST

PS- Georgia in the spring is fantastic! VH will most likely extend the tour. Road trip!

Unrealistic | 11/14/2007, 10:12 am EST

Ouch! Georgia Peach, i thought we were friend(ha) you play rough! Though that can be fun in context…not hard to please, just like the concert, I just need some energy, attitude, excitement for it, everything else(like Roth, the seamed stockings, heels) is icing!….I honestly wanted to be blown away…by the VH concert, & was disappointed that I was disappointed. Maybe it was an off night for them, playing in the suburbs of boston, that might not have been a show they were up for. The crowd was subdued, so maybe they couldn’t feed off that, & vise versa. I know DLR did not even try to hit notes, & he did one flying leg kick & maybe 2 small ones…I know, who cares, but when he did do hte big kick, it gave an energy boost…then it left again. I felt he went through the motions, or just can’t do what he once did. Should I not expect him to come close or just concede?

Sweet William Esq. | 11/14/2007, 7:34 am EST

Funny how EVH is playing like its 1978 again… Any theories as to what, or better yet whom drives the Fountain Of Youth? AVH of course totally rocks, WVH is rookie of the year and very soon top notch SUPERSTAR, and of course Diamonds can make pitch black nights sparkle like New Years Eve…

Georgia Peach | 11/13/2007, 5:13 pm EST

Sir Waldo…I still think you’re awesome as do many more. Unrealistic, I respect your right to your opinion, (even though its WRONG!) just kidding. But really. You seem like you’d be REALLY hard to please in bed or anywhere else. Ease up, my friend. Come to the Georgia show, when VH announces it, you will enjoy that one! Promise!

Waldo | 11/13/2007, 1:39 pm EST

People, a Van Halen show was & is a tribal, gather around the camp fire, put the war paint on & either participate, or run from the heat. I’ve long since ripped the rearview mirror off, looked well over the hood ornamate. Sure, the members have aged, time marches on. I still carry a sword & torch over the horizon, ready to battle as I see fit. Want us to save the world, I suggest looking up Bono for that, I’m interested in saving a few cities, over fruited plains, bringing the same songs you’ve been air guitaring to for the last 25 summers, into autumn. We’ve been out for now, what, 3 months, & I’m just getting in high gear. I’m in 4th gear, ready to shift up, look for us down the road on the 2nd swing, it’ll be crotch grabbin’, hip shakin’. Young Wolf is learning, trial by fire, he’s injected us with some young Van Halen DNA, & the concoction is lethal. Its part parcel why I agreed to come back on board. Its got legs. From what I’m seeing up the east, to the midwest, so do the fine ladies at each stop. Lose the dress, keep the heels, this singer still wants some. Come check us out. I’ll give ya a salute!

Unrealistic | 11/13/2007, 9:48 am EST

Give me something with more a punk edge, cuz DLR aint it. I’ll stick with my VH II or Fairwarning CD’s at this point. Again, watch a vintage video of them, watch a current one. the difference is stunning. The taped piped in Keyboards was a low point. Roth’s semi kicks were embarrassing. Their energy level was low grade. His lack of vocal power/strength, his inability to give his old scream, just unacceptable. Eddie knows it, he & Alex said he had no game in 1996 when the reunion didn’t work & they were slinging mud. He’s better now 10 years later? That WAS the truth the Bros. VH said then, but VH had no where to turn in 2007. They are compromised musically now…and I’m a DLR fan of the past. Its great too you had an awesome time, but I think you did for the reason it was them together, they could have lip synched & you would have been wow’d. They Karyokeed for you on Jump/I’ll Wait. If Roth can’t do his kicks, can’t do his scream, low balls the verses on songs…why was he good then? Cause he was united with EVH? If he were good, or at least brought some energy, I’d admit it, & be happy. Leave hte flag at home DLR, & get your voice back.

Unrealistic= Angry & Closeted | 11/13/2007, 5:59 am EST

Actually, Aztec Camera is too punk for you. Head back to the Rest Area with your Jimmy Somerville poster..

Unrealistic= Angry & Closeted | 11/13/2007, 5:46 am EST

Hey “Unrealistic”; Whats Your Problem? You have been DLR and VH BASHING since day one. Why are you the ONLY person North America saying your sh*t??? Sorry Mcfly; But the Consensus says: VH and DLR rocks!!! Who the F**K are you to talk about Wolfie? This Kid ROCKS!!! You have been bitchin and Moaning on here big time. Take your Aztec Camera records and F*** OFF you LOSER!!!!

Unrealistic | 11/12/2007, 4:02 pm EST

went in Worchester Ma. Was ready to give DLR slack for not being the screamin’ 20-30 something. Figured, he’s still in great shape, will have all the energy…the band was lackluster. Even Eddie walked around on stage, there was very little energy. I’ve seen clips of the ‘04 tour, which was critically panned, & he was still jumping about. He managed to muster some movement toward the end. Roth, was completely, & utterly a huge disappointment. He’s just a Vegas act. I’m a big VH fan, so I was excited. I found myself bored, & looking around, I could see many others just standing there. I didn’t expect 1981, but I thought they’d deliver. He sang so lame, he did like a jazz shuffle on Mean Streets, singing in a low register, no he wasn’t out of tune, but it was balless. He did a few select “wows!” here & there, but his trademark yelp is gone with his hair…so you might say “so what?”…well that vocal ballsiness, Eddie’s splits & running up the amps, it fires the crowd up, its the youthful exuberance that is high volacity Rock n Roll. please watch Mean Streets on Youtube from that show…you’re seeing DLR in name only. What’s the point. I can’t conceed that much. It was watered down & bland…right up to the Karyoke versions of I’ll Wait & Jump. What was that? Piped in vocals…I don’t care if Wolfie is the next Jack Bruce, his showmanship is Highschool battle of the bands runner up. He’s not ready for that, he looked completely uncomfortable…lastly, Eddie VH, that solo is tired, its the same thing he’s run out there for 20 years now….I was glad to get that great set list, not a Van Hagar guy, but I left totally disappointed. I know I’m the only one out here to have that impression, but i ask, what did Dave really bring to the table, other than being David Lee ROth in name? Please check out those ‘81 videos of Unchained, Hear about it later, & see how far he & they have fallen. THe huge stage wasn’t big enough back then, they prowled…and I know they are 50 something, but if you can’t do what you are known for doing, you are just a shell of yourself, playing the old songs.

MrFye | 10/31/2007, 8:09 am EST

Saw VH in Boston (worried that Dave and company would be road weary). They were above and beyond all expexctations. Dave is the ultimate showman. He was doing something entertaining (physically) during every song. His stick work at the end was a fantastic visual. His voice had a powerful punch (deep and throaty at all the right times) despite missing the trademark yelps. He seemed very comfortable up there, flirting with the girls in the pit. One girl stuck her tongue out at Dave and he said, “Don’t stick out your tongue unless you plan on using it”. It was the happiest Van Halen group that I’ve ever seen. Wolfgang and Eddie playing together is something beautiful to witness. Eddie was very paternal playfully tossling Wolfgang’s hair after one duet. People who think Wolfgang is overweight are wrong. He has a very round face like his mother, but the kid is far from fat. He was a great addition to the band. Alex pounded the shit out of 4 drum kits. Eddie never looked happier and gave us everything he had. Thanks for making Boston a part of this tour. What a party!

“ATTENTION ROCK N ROLL PEOPLE!!”

The Rock N’ Roll Bible: Passage 1985-96-04. “Sammy ‘The Horrible’ Hagar never gets thou TAN!!, because he will forever till eternity be in thou shadow of thou “Greatest Showman in Rock N’ Roll” Diamond David Lee Roth.” Thou Van Halen have become MIGHTY once again!!

God Bless VH, God bless us all!!!

P.S. Do thou Diamond one shall preach and “SPREAD IT AROUND!!”

Hollister | 10/29/2007, 7:53 pm EST

Loved the show in KC but the fans were obnoxious. Complaining that the opening act was a black dude, lots of fortysomething unsmiling gray haired drunks in polo shirts. What’s a girl to do?

Rock Chick | 10/26/2007, 7:50 pm EST

And I know NOTHING about the 48k or whatever you were talking about…I just knew something wasn’t right…but God forbid anyone come on here & insult the band!

Rock Chick | 10/26/2007, 7:44 pm EST

Well, I am glad someone else noticed that. I told my hubby that something didn’t sound right with that song & maybe a couple others….just my opinion! Sorry Van Halen, you are still mighty. This was the Greensboro show by the way. And that fucking huge speaker set blocked our view! We were in the upper level seats. Thank God for the big screen!

Milli Vanilli | 10/25/2007, 4:32 pm EST

And now for a Friday musical interlude, we bring you Van Halen caught on its comeback tour, except there was one big problem and it involved gadgets. What happens when you play back a prerecorded synthesizer track at 48K instead of the intended 44.1K? The whole track plays back a little bit faster and at a slightly higher pitch, that’s what. A dissonant musical mess ensues, trapping the guitarist and bassist in an on-stage musical hell with nowhere to go.

See Eddie Van Halen launch into his famous solo on “Jump”, trying in vain to somehow transpose to this otherworldly key that is nowhere to be found. This travesty of a performance happened earlier this month (in my hometown of Greensboro, North Carolina), and the funny thing is, the crowd was delighted with it. I shutter to think that no one realized something was terribly amiss, but those hometown folks always were overly polite.”

Unrealistic | 10/24/2007, 11:53 am EST

that’s not my thing!….and I’m not down on DLR, just being devil’s advocate I guess, a bit. He’s still a great showman, lots of energy, great attitude. Did you get his radio show in Georgia?

Georgia Peach | 10/24/2007, 11:44 am EST

Nude orange headed guys, yes, that was strange!

Unrealistic | 10/24/2007, 11:36 am EST

I was playing nice, saying it was cool for you to froth for him! I certainly don’t want to sling mud via blogging! Its a VH lovefest out here. Georgia Peach, you’re a peach, all that hot attitude, would never diss you!…I was making light of the other guy’s blog about nude orange headed guys.

Heard you missed me, I’m back…didn’t some wiseman once say that? Gathering around the campfire after happy hour, from what I see & hear, the Midwest is greeting us with open arms. Honey, I’ve been dealing with the naysayers from our first review, playing a small club, to being turned down for our first record deal by the exec getting his shoes shined, while he said “boys, the band’s stellar, the singer’s gotta go, we’re signing Piper”. Some 15 million records sold on the first record later, I think the audience spoke load & clear. Its part & parcel of being in the spot light, can’t handle the glare, I suggest selling encyclopedias. Those who dislike me, dislike the favorite part of themselves. I’m certainly not here to save souls, I’ll leave that up to Bono. I’m here to put on a show, especially for you spirited gals who can spot 10 rows back, you’ll see it’s truly a contact sport. Leave the heels on, lose the accessories, keep the lines straight, cause that’s the path I’m following, right up the seams. You southern gals are winning me over. I’ve been partial to these colorful ladies since Marilyn Monroe. My imagination still gets the best of me!…I always appreciate a walk down memory lane, the names of the players, streets, & other details have been washed away from too many nights shining up my Keith Richards Merit Badge. I think you can appreciate that. I’m sure the street was named after a tree they cut down to make it. I always remember my firsts though. We’ll see you Minnie, & St. Louie, you haven’t heard the last of Van Halen, we’ll get you back.

Georgia Peach | 10/23/2007, 3:22 pm EST

Waldo, I am back!!! Out of town for a bit. Missed ya, babe! Ignore the naysayers!!! You still got it, sexier than ever!!!

Unrealistic | 10/23/2007, 11:03 am EST

I must agree with Petrock, Roth is fine, not terrible, but its lacking from the heyday. Eddie seems to have almost all the same energy, but for a vocalist, its tough. I’ll cut him a break, and I know I’ll have fun at the show, but gone are his screams, which were his trademark. Everybody Wants some without the yelps. I’ve seen the Youtube clips, he sings the songs & leaves it at that, no extras…and that isn’t dissing VH, but being real. To compare them to ‘78 when they toured with Sabbath & blew them off stage…well that’s silly. THey were a hurricane then. At that point, one of rock’s best performing bands, period. What a show, pure energy. You can’t bring that at 55(Dave has always shaved 2 years off his age). I don’t like conceding too much to say “i saw them”. The STone, who i love, are silly now, play watered down versions, terrible. VH isn’t at that point, but Roth hasn’t been able to bring it in the STUDIO in 10 years, listen to Me Wise Magic, his voice is so aged….Rolling Stone has always dismissed VH as clownish, almost like KiSS. Eddie was on the cover with the band in 86, but otherwise, no. Rolling Stone(david Fricke) ranked Eddie at 70 on top 100 guitarist, dismissing him as simply overrated flash. You could say that about his followers, but he WROTE, great songs & riffs, separating himself, & leading the charge. He did sort of overplay by the mid to late 80’s, but the Roth years he came up with such great stuff, much more than flash.

Little Dreamer | 10/22/2007, 5:45 am EST

The Stars are aligning for the HARMONIC CONVERGANCE on 10/30/07..
The Incredible Celestial Event known as THE MIGHTY VAN HALEN returns to BOSTON!!! Perhaps DLR will throw out the first pitch at FENWAY!!! Right now everything he touches turns to GOLD…

petrock5150 | 10/21/2007, 4:35 pm EST

I just have to add my two cents. Saw 10/3 in Philly, going to STL, BOS and DC…but are you kidding me?

Dave more often than not does the same crap not singing the songs but telling me the songs, and I hate that. Thank God for the backing vocals. Dave is good, not great, but just pretty damn lucky to be where he was in the 70s. This tour, as great as it is, could be a bit better if he just sang all the songs. It proves Eddie and Alex are Van Halen. Remember Strummin with the Devil..duh.

Mean 81> | 10/20/2007, 12:24 am EST

Those that are currently criticising Roth’s singing and stage persona, get a life you pretensions losers!! Roth is loving every minute being on stage with the mighty VH. On watching the clips on UTUBE he’s soaking it all in. In the early days he’ll might not remember half the show with the excess of sex, drugs and rock n roll in the early 80’s. He is as much a fan of VH as we are. He is the biggest supporter and loudest spokesperson of this mighty band. No promoter or announcer can come close to Diamond Dave. He is a complete ORIGINAL and ONE OF A KIND. VH became great because they had the right ingredients/formula that became a signature sound. With the genius of Eddie’s guitar and songwriting, Alex’s snare sound, Dave’s personality, stage presence and a blue’s, R & B vocal sound, and Mike’s high background vocals, there is uniqueness and mystique that sets them apart from the rest. Unlike a lot of bands today sound so much alike that it’s CLONE CITY!! I personally think he’s singing better NOW than ever before!!! It would be cringe worth if Dave (53 years old, not forgetting!!) tried to replicate what he did in the past.

5150 Amokalex | 10/19/2007, 3:24 pm EST

I have NO idea what I´m doing here???

This is a Rolling Stone Blog! and for the boys and girls here that are dissen Diamond Dave, Wolfgang for any reason what so ever, are just as bad as the Rolling Stone Magazine!

I have been in the radio business overseas for over 10 years, working for the only Progressive Rock radio station in Germany and that as an american, doing my shows in 3 different languages!

I remeber seeing Van Halen back then when they played as a warm up band for Black Sabbath, and the MSGarden in New York emptied before Ozzy and co. even had a chance to come on stage!

That the bad boyz are back together again, is like a dream come true! To know that Ed is well and healthy is also a dream for the music world.

Rolling Stone has never had Eddie on their cover! The wanna be Rock n Rollers that give up the nonsense critic about the concert know who they are.

You had No Right to become tickets!

Van Halen is back and hopefully for a long time!

I´m outta this Commercial Bullsh*t Pop music comic book magazine Blog.

Unrealistic | 10/19/2007, 10:27 am EST

a recent review:
Roth, whose lounge lizard characteristics clearly made him the band’s most popular lead singer, was this reunion’s weak link. Simply put, he hasn’t made the transition particularly well. His wily hair, high scissor kicks and sexual bravado is gone, replaced by the sparkly jacket, leather pants, stiff mannerisms, whitened teeth and comedy shtick of a phantom Liberace. His voice struggled to bellow like he used to; on “Panama,” it forced him to sing in a lower register. Except when he stuck his face into theirs, the band appeared to mostly ignore his continual comic mugging and especially the times — “Dance the Night Away” for one — that he forgot lyrics.

Riot Nrrrd™ | 10/19/2007, 6:26 am EST

Hey Waldo - if that’s really you, Diamond Dave, I’m from Swampscott (but went to college in, saw VH back in ‘77 in, and still work in Pasadena - how’s *that* for sniffing the Roth popcorn trail?) and (if you can believe it) had never heard that you spent some of your Big Yaz Bread years in my ol’ hometown. I hear vague inklings that you were only living there briefly and left when you were around 9 or 10. True dat? What elementary school did you go to and what part of town did you live in? (Heck, maybe I’ll run into Lisa in Pasadena someday and I could ask her, too)

Got a floor ticket to the Honda show in December … am damned excited to see you back where you belong!

People, let’s hear it from Indy, Rosemont, let Chicago know what they’re in for! A few special nights in my midwest hometown, & I’m just getting in high gear, I haven’t even used the driverside airbag yet, but its getting precariously close! I’ve been runnin’,jumpin’ & doing about every verb you can image on this tour. We’re not joggin’ with the devil, I guarantee you that…are we winning over the doubters, I knew we would. I remember the fella at the record company in the early days trying to get signed, saying “guys, the band’s stellar, but you gotta lose the singer”. Well, I think we went on to sell how many million of that first album? Right. I’ve suited up for battle many times, & always came away with the damsel. Speaking of which, wears my little Sweet Georgia Peach, don’t worry baby, we’re a comin’!…keep lookin’ ahead, we’re in the here & now. When I die, sprinkle my ashes on the 80’s, but right now, let’s celebrate Happy Hour & rip that rearview mirror clean off!…Jesus just left Chicago, but I’m coming to fill the void!

atrue VH FAN! ! ! | 10/17/2007, 2:30 pm EST

Unrealistic . . . I don’t know maybe Ed panicked and was never able to fully trust anyone after the way Dave f*cked him in 85, (*Sorry DLR fans I love him too but Dave thought he was the sh*t and thought he could do better without VH. Unfortunately he was unable to stand the test of time, Don’t get me wrong Dave started off strong but lets face it . . Strummin with the Devil was a new low even for DLR*) who knows what was going through EVH’s head, again like I said he is a human being and hell maybe he did drop the ball a few times but I don’t think it’s worth all the sh*t he has been taking. I don’t think anyone has shown him a shred of loyalty either. Ed has given his life to rock and roll and lets face it the 80’s would have probably been ruled by disco if not for the Mighty Van Halen IMHO. I think Ed finally said f*ck it. I’ll get my son in the band and maybe he won’t have to worry if someone is gonna run off and do a solo career.
I know guitar players. I did a small stint in the mid 90’s as a singer and let me tell you . . 90 percent of guitar players are seriously lacking in social skills. I think they spent way too much of their impressionable years locked in their bedroom learning how to master their instrument rather than fine tuning their social skills. You have heard EVH over the years. He believes that a band should be like and extended family., ie: “we are like brothers” and more recently he refered to DLR as his new brother, which is why he probably takes things way too personally !

Unrealistic | 10/17/2007, 11:28 am EST

Helen Wheels, I would love a new rock scene to take off, some great rock bands again, original in attitude, experimental, etc…

True VH Fan, you’re passionate! that’s good. you know, I must agree, the Cherone Cd wasn’t that bad, just it wasn’t a commercial success, so the media assumes its a bust. His voice is sort of annoying, but its by far their most diverse Cd, adventureous, for better or worse. I wouldn’t have purchased, but saw it for 1.99 used, & tried it. some good tunes…never bought Balance…I have to disagree a bit on EVH, the interviews I’ve seen or read from him after the Hagar split, or when he was on Howard Stern last year, he sounded defensive, bitter, & egotistical…and lets face it, was a drunk. Addicts point fingers, its never their fault..though DLR must be tough to deal with, even if he’s in a good mood, its a bit much… The whole thing with “Mike joined another band & wants to sell Hot Sauce” is BS. Can’t Mike, an adult, still be friends with Hagar, who I think is a marginal talent, but seems like a nice guy…anyhow, I’ll enjoy the reunion.

atrue VH FAN! ! ! | 10/17/2007, 9:20 am EST

I am a Van Halen Fan period. Dave no Dave, Sammy no Sammy, Michael Anthony no Michael Anthony, Gary Cherone was a mistake but hell, has anyone even givin it a chance music wise. I thought the album was strong and a welcome change from the 50plus freakin love songs Sammy wrote. I think everyone should give EVH a break after all it IS HIS BAND. He has had to deal with 2 egomaniac lead singers, hip replacement surgery, divorce from his wife who he was with for over 20years, throw cancer on top of that sh*t sandwich and I would drink like a fish too. EVH after all is said and done is a lumping HUMAN BEING no different than any of us and hurts just as much as we do. Calling him a guitar GOD has gone to everyone elses head except EHV. Eddie if you read this know this. I will always be here for you bro. You have been there through most of my late childhood on and I will be here for you through thick or thin. Because thats what a true fan does. Not bail on you everytime you do something we dont like.
There I have said my peace !

Agreed - the music scene has been pretty vacant.

…and it’s OK…you guys can keep the small change…it’s only a nickel.

Unrealistic | 10/16/2007, 4:22 pm EST

Rip VW, very descriptive…and on the $$…I can remember in the early 80’s, VH coming to town, & there was a huge buzz all over the highschool, before & after. Kids all in their concert T’s the next day. Left over attitude of the 70’s that soon died. It was a fun period, the tail end of all the great concert bands..and in clubs too, yes…there will be a band that will put the listeners & industry on its ear again, shake it up. The industry won’t support it at first, cuz they are looking for the next Nickleback or Good Charlotte. Its got to be something that catches them off guard. I may not even like it, but I’ll pull for it, if it rocks & the band is truly original in its attitude.

Rip | 10/15/2007, 10:24 pm EST

I had an interesting conversation with an old buddy of tonight. About the present state of rock. We hit all the shows that came any where near us in the 80’s. We hit the clubs almost every night an everything was fucking exciting. I’ve seen so many bands that I’ve forgotten more than I can remember. Booze and drugs sort of have that affect on a body.
Where I live now everything has just died on two legs. No one seems interested in live music anymore. The metropolitan areas don’t even seem to be brimming with that “attitude” we felt through the early 90’s. My excitement for VH seemed to stimulate the fire some.
I remember a time when a show would come to town and everybody went nuts. These days “the scene” is filled with hip hop and drunk fools. I feel an obligation to revisit my past via Van Halen to remember the days of making love to my girlfriend in the backseat, drinking beer, smokin’ dope, raising hell and listening to great music, talking about the next great band or a great underground band. Granted I know ticket prices are ridiculous. I try to take my daughter to concerts every once in awhile, but the money just ain’t there. I feel like the very rock-n-roll that gave me strength to go on has evaporated. Therefore, the VH tour made me feel good again. The ticket price hurt, but I still like the way I felt when I left Greensboro.
The very magazine that sponsers this unwieldly blog is a complete “sell out”. Pete Wentz in $300 jeans, pictures of P Diddy playing on the beach, stories of VIP shows that most of us don’t have snow balls chance in hell of being invited to see. Fuck that noise. I’m dying to see something worth believing in again. So although the VH tix were painful to buy atleast I felt like rock-n-roll mattered again. Yea, I know it’s a fucking fantasy and better yet a godamned “let down” to expect anything these days. The corporate rock monster is wheezing it’s last breath. Most of the record companies have laid off the vast majority of their employees, the record stores are disappearing daily probably houly at this time and radio is a disaster filled with jack ass DJs who don’t know shit about music. A revolution would be nice. Something to stir up the fire without selling a lousy Dominos pizza or watered down Budweiser.
I’ve considered shredding all of my Rolling Stone magazines, pissing on them, packing them into a box and sending em back to the rightful owners. But who would really give a shit.

Unrealistic | 10/15/2007, 2:07 pm EST

“Helen, there was a cool rock scene/movement in the early 90’s that faded way too fast.”

That was while the true meaning and integrity of alternative rock had relevance. Should it have broken through the barriers into the corporate mainstream world the way it did? IMO I don’t think it was the original purpose or intention of those bands. When it becomes “only about the money”, music artists begin to lose sight of their original purpose.

Unrealistic | 10/12/2007, 9:57 am EST

Rip Van Winkle makes some great points, its the going rate these days for the big bands. It is a huge stage etc…Helen, there was a cool rock scene/movement in the early 90’s that faded way too fast. Lots of great bands that buried hair metal, & seemed to be influenced by the great bands of the 70’s….oh, btw, Living Colour released another album around ‘93 with little fanfare, & resurfaced again a few years ago, again, no notice, so I think they’ve packed their bags…VH survives though!…wonder how much I could get for my Fairwarning Tshirt on Ebay?

Waldo | 10/11/2007, 2:39 pm EST

Folks, I’m feelig the heat off the stage, its getting that much hotter with each note, each show. Cleveland, give yourself a hand, you really wratched it up a notch. The energy level was on par with some of the heavier California earthquakes….I can see by the way the seams ran up the back of the female stockings, if there’s an arena, there’s sure to be a Victoria Secret right near by. God Bless you Gals, & you know I’m up for some heavy innuendo, I’m a black belt in word association…..People I sing for my supper, and would do it for minimum wage if I had to…and I have…to bring the full Van Halen experience, Uncut, suitcase with outfits to suit 15 situations, on stage & off(the chaps have their own wing at the Smithsonian I believe), done with torque & high pressure, no deadspace, no TV timeouts, we’re suggesting the kids ask Mom & Pop for a raise in allowance. I promise it will be money well spent, the equivilent of dinner, drinks & a movie, only you’ll have a thunderbolt in your Fruit Loops the next morning. I’ve been on both sides, I’m from the suburbs, where they cut the tree down & then name a street after it, I know what it takes…. but how long can you look at a postcard of the Grand Canyon, justice is not served, you need to see the carwreck yourself, then tell a friend. There’s lots of commotion for the price. While the car’s still runnin’, hop in & go for the ride. Its my priviledge. Now dim the lights & turn up the music!

helen | 10/10/2007, 7:27 pm EST

Unrealistic,
I’ve had to jar my memory, but going back in time to Lolla’92, Ministry’s performance of “NWO” left quite a powerful impact during the concert festival. Some songs are more memorable than others I suppose. I will be going to see VH, b/c I did not see them during their prime way back when…so be it with the ticket price.

Rip | 10/10/2007, 5:42 pm EST

I didn’t even bat an eye at the ticket price. I saw VH in 82′ for $9.00 US dollars. These days puttin’ a show on the road takes heavy green. The bands aren’t makin’ squat on cd’s since so many people feel “obliged” to steal via the internet. Alot of folks around here have been bitchin’about the lack of live acts comin’ to North Carolina. If the market can’t support the band, the bands aren’t wasting their time hauling tons of equipment around for nothing. If you can’t pay the price then don’t roll the dice. Happy Birthday O’ Patron Saint of Larceny!
Always remember “Where ever you go, there you are”.

Great balls o' fire | 10/10/2007, 5:40 pm EST

Happy Birthday to ya wildman!!
Keep the fire going strong, (just don’t burn anyone with the torch).
Rock on!!

helen | 10/10/2007, 4:45 pm EST

i had a chance to see AIC/VR recently, but i gave up my ticket…no desire to go. i have a memory of AIC which i would like to keep preserved in my own mind, as they were with layne during their peak. back to work…

Unrealistic | 10/10/2007, 4:30 pm EST

helen, nice bloggin’ with you, I too am at work!…AIC is one regret I never saw them(with Layne, saw them with VR this summer)…sound like you rock as well! take care.

helen | 10/10/2007, 4:27 pm EST

i didn’t go to the ‘91 lolla concert, but would have liked to have seen jane’s addiction and NIN. living color was a great band - whatever happened to them? went to the ‘93 lollapalooza festival, and at least saw AIC when layne was still around. speaking of concert ticket prices, i have to get back to work now, so that i can pay for that VH ticket!

Unrealistic | 10/10/2007, 4:17 pm EST

that must have been great, I went to the 1st Lollapolloza in 91, & that too ranks as one of my favorite shows, the whole day was great, Jane’s addition(love them), was into Living Colour, NIN. and as you said, great vibe.

helen | 10/10/2007, 4:12 pm EST

i saw RHCP in ‘92, along with PJ and Soundgarden (Lolla). quite possibly one of my favorite concerts…it had a vibe unto itself which was non-corporate sponsored and less commercialized…ticket price if i remember was $25 for an all-day concert festival.

Unrealistic | 10/10/2007, 3:59 pm EST

Now that was a great show, saw that at the Boston Garden, Mars Volta was great, & RHCP’s, who I’ve always liked, were SO good, way beyond what I expected. Frusiante stole the show…I had good seats though, so it didn’t seem so big.

Unrealistic | 10/10/2007, 3:52 pm EST

Helen, what city/state are you blogging from? Curious for the venues you’ve seen shows. What was your first show?…my 1st cost 11.50, Alice Cooper, Joan Jett opened. she was booed unmercifully.

helen | 10/10/2007, 3:52 pm EST

stadium concerts also don’t give justice to a lot of great bands. i saw the mars volta open for RHCP last year, and they sounded terrible (no fault of the band). some bands cannot play in large arenas - they are meant to be heard live in small bars or clubs.

helen | 10/10/2007, 3:47 pm EST

i remember when concert ticket prices were in the $10 - $15 range during the 80’s. if i can recall, the joshua tree tour concert (in the late 80’s) was about $20 per ticket, as were the ticket prices for pink floyd.

Unrealistic | 10/10/2007, 3:47 pm EST

Again, Helen, you make a lot of sense, I couldn’t agree more, theaters are the best venues, for sight & sound. You can feel the energy more. Arena can be fun, if you have decent seats, great stage etc. Stadium show are simply events in my book, musically just silly, seeing the Stones or Pink Floyd was background music played by ants. Nothing against the bands, just the venues are condusive to music.

helen | 10/10/2007, 3:43 pm EST

smaller venues are really the place to hear live music anyway, where the acoustics are better. this will probably be my first and only VH concert, so i made an exception paying the ticket price. plus, the concert reviews have been good so far.

Unrealistic | 10/10/2007, 3:40 pm EST

You go Helen!…though now we get into the sticky subjective debate over what PJ or U2 are offering for the price…I saw U2, I thought they too charged a lot(i could be wrong), though PJ prides themselves on keep prices down. I don’t think they have the VH overhead though, & PJ the tunes/stage presense, but that is just one man’s opinion.

Unrealistic | 10/10/2007, 3:33 pm EST

Fools! That’s what we are! How about some 15yr old that wants to see what Rock is really about? Not just VH, but all these bands. I read the concert industry is barely breathing, wonder why? between the high prices & lack of new talent, no one will care. I paid $15 for a VH show in the 80’s. That’s well beyond inflation to today’s prices….and other than the older acts, who can sell out an arena now, never mind a stadium? Nickelback, I think not!

helen | 10/10/2007, 3:32 pm EST

…compare that to the $50 floor ticket price to see the Pearl Jam/U2 double-bill concert…which was around 4 hours worth of live music.

helen | 10/10/2007, 3:26 pm EST

$180 per ticket including taxes, shipping and service fees. plus, i see resellers on the internet selling tickets for as much as $500 apiece, which isn’t fair to the the real fans who were not able to buy tickets when they went on sale.

Unrealistic | 10/10/2007, 3:20 pm EST

Helen Wheels, you bring up a great point, & a bone of contention. I paid $140 for a tic. While they can get this fee, they’re selling out, why must all the established bands(Stones, Who, Police, etc) just go for the jugular? Wouldn’t $75 be quite sufficient?

helen | 10/10/2007, 3:11 pm EST

the concert had better exceed expectations for the face-value price of the tickets! triple the cost of what i would normally be willing to pay to see them ONCE.

Unrealistic | 10/10/2007, 2:08 pm EST

California girls in Porsches, southern bells, sweet Georgia Peachs, with attitude to boot, VH had/has the best looking girls for fans, a rare hardrock band that girls loved just as much. the hair may be shorter, as is the band’s, but the enthusiasm has not waned!…VH was the ultimate soundtrack to many highschoolers, FastTime era. They were a kick in the butt to new wave…we’ll see if the same attitude & “energy” is still there from the fans & the band. If the Georgia Peach is any indication, I think it will exceed expectations!

Waldo | 10/10/2007, 12:16 pm EST

People,
this is a great day indeed. Somethings up for sure, my phone says “27 New Voicemails”…hello Cleveland! Cleveland doth rock, there’s a general air of excitement that only Van Halen can bring to the midwest.(or from the signs of it, your local ball team). I always loved the Midwestern gals as well, they try harder!…it makes me more than pleased when we can help the troops in any way, past, present, future. Come on, let’s get real, there’s not a Commander under 60 that doesn’t know what I do for a living, the Officers are all my age & you know they had at least a dozen beers to “Runnin’ with the Devil”. Why not filter that down through the ranks. That is a priviledge!…This has most definitely got legs, Rolling Stone has never questioned using the Van Halen brand name, why shouldn’t I use their forum. Rolling Stone is sterling, Americana indeed, I might not always agree with their politics, but I’ll use their site for a spring board, listen to the true nation’s heartbeat. From what I’m gathering, Van Halen is carrying on a time honored tradition, & showing all ages how its done. We’re ready for hunting, got the groceries & its ready to be served. This is not rockers with walkers, I had full faith in this, & now the US & Canada is paying full salute! You’re getting all the brightest colors, no bleach. Bring yourself, & the next generation, everyone salutes. And Gals, you have NOT disappointed!

MrFye | 10/10/2007, 7:31 am EST

Welcome back Waldo,
I’ve watched all the recent youtube clips and the VH machine is hitting all cylinders. I can’t wait till you guys hit Bad Ass Boston on Rocktober 30th. We’re looking forward to a Garden Party with the ultimate party band. I was in the Air Force from 78 to 82. I spent all my basic training savings on a kick ass stereo. Van Halen rocked my system everyday at full volume and the barracks never complained.
Thanks guys!

Well, I saw you at Mohegan Sun, Waldo and VH is everything I always thought….just AWESOME!!!! So, so much talent!!! Overwhelming!!!! Yes, Wolfgang is excellant, but I’ve got to tell you, the 3 of you are just incredible!!! You still look great, you sound great and throw off such a great vibe!!!! Eddie IS his guitar! The drums ARE Alex!… and you are non other than the one and only front guy who can compliment it all !!!! You are the best Waldo!! I smiled all the while I was listening to you!!…..Hey, I remember being single, driving my 912E and blasting Beautiful Girls all over southern CA when I lived out there!!! What a kick!! Fast times in SD! That song is you and only you!!!! Thanks for getting back together guys!!! Oh Waldo! Oh Waldo! Messiah to the masses of reprobates like myself. The scorched earth approach to cookin’, fuckin’ rock-n-roll is a welcome sight. It’s just damned beautiful to see the youngsters carry forth the gospel of VH with such fearsome belief. I’m so blown away, I’m lookin’ into a Vegas trip to keep the party rollin’into 2008. Can’t wait to hear what’s happenin’ in the studio. I’m on track to maintain a record of noise disturbance which has followed me from house to house for 20 odd years and would love to do it with whatever delightfully, ear wrecking piece of rock-n-roll mastery provided by the Greatest Rock Outfit of all time.

Though you have to be careful bringing the funny stuff across the border…if you show ‘em a little stocking top, they’ll let you go I’m sure….where else can you be found Georgia Peach, other than a VanHalen blog? That’s the question. There aren’t enough like you up north.

It packs more a punch than some of the other “reunion” bands…and as you mentioned, its seems the girls are getting into the spirit of it all, I think it’ll be fun night, i’ll have to gear up before hand & pretend its 1984. I think y’all(see, I can do southern!) need to do another road trip!

Georgia Girl | 10/9/2007, 2:49 pm EST

woo, there’s heat coming from out here, right through my laptop baby. I like this. This is why we realligned the stars, shined up the chrome & brought this back out. These songs are pure Americana, as familiar as the Golden Arches. It would have been a sin not to serve them up pipin’ hot, with a smile, to each & everyone of you. I can see the one continous smile from those that already attended. Tell a friend, tell an enemy, this is more contagious than any infection. More uplifting than church on Sunday. Its like a thunderbolt in your Cheerios, a missle in your Pop Tart, I wouldn’t steer you wrong! I’m ready to be upgraded to an action figure, and we’re still in the first month of this tour…I’m more than happy to see the overwhelming support from the female contingency as well. Leave the fellas at home, I’ll be glad to how well you’ve made it past the 80’s. Remember, my life is still a long video, everyone’s welcome to have a cameo, just dress the part. I STILL like the way the line runs up the back of the stockings, & please, leave the heels on. Loose the accessories…but I diverge, but that happens when you’re the Patron Saint of Larceny, which is always more fun than the Prince of Darkness!…Let’s keep the party rollin’, love the keen reviews & I promise to do my part & keep your hips smilin’!

Georgia Girl | 10/9/2007, 10:41 am EST

My first show was in ‘81, man, that was a long time ago. This is going to be a greatest hits album come to life!! Waldo, you need to ask Ed a couple o’ questions for me. Is that a new EVH Wolfgang that he is playing? Who makes it and when can I buy one? Time to sign off and try to find my old Fair Warning tour shirt.

Smokin! | 10/6/2007, 4:00 pm EST

Just saw Van Halen at Mohegan Sun last night. Not only was the music rockin, the boys were hot! David & Eddie were reborn, buff bods and all - wow - couln’t take my eyes of you all! Music and energy was awsome. It was worth paying what I did for the ticket (obviously) not it’s original price…. tell Eddie to stay healthy - he’s looking better than he has in many years and he needs to do it for his son. Such a cutie! Stay together this time will you please.

BEST CONCERT EVER

Rip | 10/6/2007, 3:06 pm EST

This isn’t just Van Halen. It’s Van Fucking Halen! The Greensboro show made my year. The roadtrip up and back was crazy just like the ol’days. I must admit I wept at the sheer greatness of the moment. I left Greensboro feeling like I was eighteen and haven’t lost the feeling yet. I was deeply inspired by the “mind roasting” show. I forgot how good it felt to go over the top and raise hell. I won’t forget again. I’ve been listening to VH all week long as the inspiration to conquer the rigors of opening my own company. Here’s to the fucking future. Van Halen is back with a vengence. The fire inside is hot, wild and beautiful. I think I may have gotten a little younger this week. I was so inspired that I dedicated “Secrets” to my gorgeous,
tall girlfriend halfway around the world (She’s 13 years younger than myself ;) . Thanks guys. Always loved ya Dave. I’m taking the world by storm with the impetus from VFH. Life is goooood!

scootdig | 10/5/2007, 11:29 pm EST

wow, to be on the same comment stream as DLR…what an honor…Waldo is as readable as Dave has always been quoteable…WALDO I have always said you are THE most eloquent qúoteable celebrity in history…what an honor to read all this shit…COME TO COPENHAGEN!!!!! WORLD TOUR!!! Please!! More Power to ya, Scott Class of 1986… VH #1

Rock On | 10/5/2007, 3:43 pm EST

I am looking forward to seeing them in Mass.
Can’t wait !

Waldo | 10/5/2007, 11:44 am EST

Diamonds are indeed for ever, for this Diamond in the rough, its always been about guns, guitars, bikinis & fast cars…and I aim to please. I have over 36 stamps in my passport, there’s no location too remote. This is just the genesis, its forming, we’re on 2 feet, but I plan on the slam dunk in the New Year. Hang tight. Diamond Dave’s got all the flavors to satisfy. I’d never want to sour a Georgia Peach. I’m thinking you’ll be perfect to squeeze come spring time! In the mean time, I’m enjoying this fine Indian Summer in sunny New England, not far from where I spent a few summers. Keep comin’ & I promise we’ll do the heavy lifting. We’re looking straight ahead, the other singers are the past, they threw a party, I AM the party!

Little Dreamer | 10/5/2007, 4:00 am EST

Has anyone realised that Diamonds make Windmills and Wooden Shoes sparkle most luminously?
Verstaat u mij???
During the “dark ages”, Tiny Tim was a more in intriguing six string samurai.. So i took a nap.
Its all Quantum Physics, or as Mr. Bond said; “Diamonds are Forever”…

inowhour | 10/4/2007, 10:57 pm EST

WALDO. YOU FUCKING ROCKED! I bleached my pants after the show. Holy crap. I have been listening to your music (YOUR) since I was able to hold my microphone and piss. Send me an e-mail at thecon@verizon.net. I want to see more. It brought back all those crazy wonderful memories of my childhood. Tickets, autographs, pictures, sit in pit, sit at light/sound board…anything…just let me be part of the performance again just like I was last night in philly!!!! YOU ROCK DAVE!!!!!!!

running | 10/4/2007, 10:47 pm EST

See you in Dec., VH. Anticipating a great concert.

Georgia Girl | 10/4/2007, 10:26 pm EST

Alright Sir Waldo, I am BEGGING, please, please add a Georgia or even a South Carolina show to your tour!!! You can do it!! You are looking great by the way!

Bozo | 10/4/2007, 6:35 pm EST

Waldo! No Houston?? I’ve been waiting 20 years for this and you no-show my state? Standing by for tour-extension Sir! It was like a death in the family when you left, something was never quite right. I guess you can put humpty back together again. That my friend is something!

MissG | 10/4/2007, 5:31 pm EST

Hey Waldo,

Please, please, please book a stop in MS - simply b/c we love you down here darlin’. You came thru Jackson MS on the Jump tour, it was Eddie’s birthday….I remember it like it was yesterday, and that’s what you might call selective memory. I can’t help but smile everytime I see it in my mind. VanHagar never interested me sweetie, there is just NO comparison. Thank you Waldo!

Waldo | 10/4/2007, 3:41 pm EST

This is the feedback I’m looking for, I’ve got one ear to the ground picking up all signals. Rest assure people, you are now getting the bare essense of Van Halen. You no longer have to lift the needle up to pass over “how to” songs of relationships. I don’t care how the car’s tuned, take me to the crash. I at least will sing to you about the liquor store robbed in that very car…and if we want to slow it up, we’ll make it simmer, otherwise let’s get in the far left lane. We’ve trimmed the fat. This is butt-muscle music. Need I illuminate further? This is the Devil’s onion ring. This outfit unfortunately has been led by singers bringing a pocket knife & bic lighter to the fight, I’ve always come with sword & torch! The energy, the kicks, the showmanship was all detailed well before I take the stage, its 2nd nature at that point, you don’t go out & try these things. Sam is & was always a mediocre talent at best, nothing interesting happening there, David Lee is the only thing that makes him remotely interesting. What else would you ask him about, which HallMark card he stole his lyric from. Please, come see the new shiny, real Van Halen, test driven & back on the roadways with yours truly. ? I’m Toastmaster General of the Immoral Majority.

VH Philly Fan | 10/4/2007, 2:50 pm EST

I just went to their show last night and let me say IT WAS AWESOME !!! The moment the lights went down and the infamous VH sound came to life onstage.. the place went wild. If you have been a fan of VH for as long as I have been… then you would know that when they had Sammy as singer, the shows never had the same energy as they did when Roth was frontman. Fact is Fact! After seeing them last night all I have to say is that VAN HALEN IS BACK !!!

Omar | 10/4/2007, 2:11 pm EST

Viva Van Halen!!!. I’m from Lima, Peru.

Waldo | 10/4/2007, 1:26 pm EST

I can tell you first hand, from fist pumpin’, sheer heart attack response from the legions of die hards, the show went without any hitches. You can’t fake a 5 scale tremor people….Now what’s the word around the campfire, that’s impedious of these scribs, we’ve made contact & since back when I was a Boy Scout, my main focus was gettin’ around the blaze & telling just how big that Yeti really was on that trail. The more mustard & relish, the bigger the eyes got, I realized I was on to something. It continues today at happy hour, & I saw some mind roasted eyes last night. What’d you think Philly?….we’re having a great time out there, but I’ve always confused business with pleasure, its a great gig if you can get it! I want to you to grab hold of that enthusiasm & feel it yourself by the 3rd chorus. This in NOT just the flavor of the week, I’ve been singing for my meals for many a summer now. Its always an adventure too, the good with bad, but the only adventure I regret is the ones I didn’t go on. Let’s hear it from the peanut gallery…and Saugas, yes I remember you well, & little Jenny Wagner, we’ll be swinging through soon. We haven’t forgot ya.
PS - if we performed Happy Birthday, I’m sure we’d add some Jack Daniels marination Van Halenize it just right!

Volvo | 10/4/2007, 12:30 pm EST

How was the show last night? Hot or not?

Little Dreamer | 10/4/2007, 5:19 am EST

The naysayers were not yet ready to understand the buddhist riff for the inner ear. But with a laugh and a smile we raised a toast along the Swampscott seawall, looking towards Nahant, and i said “weren’t they amazed when you were bitterless”……..

Twinkie | 10/3/2007, 8:43 pm EST

Judging by the wad of fanboi comments here, VH could’ve played “Happy Birthday” all night and you lot would’ve still jizzed yourselves !

Good to see Eddie looking healthy, sober and enjoying himself on stage. That alone was worth the price of admission.

Waldo | 10/3/2007, 4:39 pm EST

It goes without mentioning I’ve always appreciated the female adoration, love sampling at each new city I go to, & they’re always something different in each one. Be it a nice squeeze, a wide grinned hello, a hot dog & a shake, Diamond Dave will always enjoy the sights & sounds. That’s what still UP with that my friend. I never met a beautiful female I didn’t like…come on out to Philly, its time to test the dance-ablity of these here songs before we bring them to your steamin’ eyes & ears. tonight. I’m getting “drop the Laptop!” You only have to ask once!

DLR LOVER | 10/3/2007, 4:31 pm EST

By the way, WALDO, you could give a shout-out to the fans on here who are talking about how sexy you are looking! What’s up with that?

ADHD | 10/3/2007, 4:17 pm EST

Waldo, thanks for commenting on that…TRUST ME…I personally am more interested in YOUR fly! Just trying to clear up some confusion for my girl! Rock on you sexy thing!

Unrealistic | 10/3/2007, 4:12 pm EST

absolutely! well mannered, but lots of fun…we like to party up here as well, along with getting into some harmless trouble… my girlfriend in College was from Athens, so Georgia has good connotations! She liked some wholesome “troublemaking”…2 shows here, Boston & 40 miles away in Worchester. It’ll be fun to see all the VH girls! I think DLR brings that out in them.

Realistic | 10/3/2007, 4:01 pm EST

Actually I’m in Savannah! But it was worth the drive to G’Boro! Boston sure is a long ways away! I could get into some REAL trouble up there! Especially with some funny stuff and a drink or two! Don’t ya love those Southern girls!

Unrealistic | 10/3/2007, 3:47 pm EST

I like that attitude! Like a true female VH fan! Like the ones I remember back in Highschool! I’ve never fallen for a girl from North Carolina! And I’m so far away in Boston. And this blogging this is so impersonal, & public. VH will be here soon, bring your friends, come on up & enjoy the party!

Realistic | 10/3/2007, 3:44 pm EST

Of course, I’m STILL a hard rock girl, just with less hair! And he did talk some to the crowd! But they mostly rocked out. Your concert is when? I’ll have to check my t-shirt.

Realistic | 10/3/2007, 3:42 pm EST

Well, let’s say this…my girls were pushed up & looking for trouble! And I was DEFINITELY looking at what the singer was SWINGING!!! No big hair anymore for me, I’m like DLR now!

Unrealistic | 10/3/2007, 3:28 pm EST

funny review…he must have shaved his chest as well. Did he have a lot of on stage raps, talking to the crowd for long periods?…I heard the girls from the 80’s dressed the part, did you put on the 80’s attire? Puff up the hair? ah, I loved the hard rock girls of those days.

Waldo | 10/3/2007, 3:03 pm EST

Folks, that’s show biz, adding a little spice to the rice. I can neither confirm or deny people. Its these nuances that keep a live show just that, live! These things aren’t planned, there is no rewind button, we put our pants on one leg at a time, or in this the age old adage to zip or not to zip. Its an old performance trick. What did the gals think? Edward’s always been a doer. Van Halen’s verb music though: Pick a verb. Whatever we were when we first showed up — the most alternative, left-of-center, whatever — is now the toast of the middle, including all the fire, all of the military. The Citadels war cry is now “Runnin’ with the Devil”. So did Ed have his fly down? That’s speculation, tabloid farder. I suggest you take a look at what the singer’s swingin’ next time out.

Realistic | 10/3/2007, 2:14 pm EST

Unrealistic, when you can, check www.newsobserver.com under Lifestyles for G’Boro review. It was funny, talking about DLR now being like a skeevy older uncle. Sat night I missed Dave’s assless chaps/the lion’s mane/the chest hair…but it was STILL Dave!!! A little older & wiser, as we all are, hopefully! And better than ever.

ADHD | 10/3/2007, 2:04 pm EST

Let’s see if we can get Waldo to verify this…my girlfriend was at the Charlotte show…she swears when Eddie came out for “Ice Cream Man” his pants were undone from his bathroom break. She checked YouTube & some blogs & got the same idea from others. What say you Waldo?

Unrealistic | 10/3/2007, 1:36 pm EST

I’ll have some funny stuff w/me as well!… Roth’s in dynamite shape to say the least. So the girls say he’s still got it? I wish he had a bit more of a rockin’ ‘do but whatcha gonna do….you liked his chaps from the old days? Classic, he had lots of bravado. Eddie was the coolest, & still has the mojo. I’ve tired of Allan H moniker, terrible name, bad VH reference…did you see VH back in their Heyday?

Realistic | 10/3/2007, 12:19 pm EST

Allan, of course, it DIDNT hurt to smoke something/take a pill before the show like we did….hehehehehe. Enjoy!

Realistic | 10/3/2007, 12:15 pm EST

Allan, I respect yours as well. Of course, I am female & simply think DLR is sexy as HELL! Enjoy your concert! Even without his extra screams/assless pants/etc! I will check later for the MeWiseMagic clip you mentioned. Thanks for the info.

Allan Holdsworth | 10/3/2007, 12:10 pm EST

the first show is on youtube as well, he sings the songs well, but nothing extra, not ONE old time scream…. Its great you enjoyed, as I said, I will enjoy it too…Roth couldn’t do his scream in the studio as of ‘96, listen to MEWiseMagic. He’s still a great showman though. whether we see it the same is subjective. I respect your opinion .

Realistic | 10/3/2007, 12:00 pm EST

Allan, Dave DID his screams, DID his kicks, Eddie ROCKED out, Wolfie ROCKED out, Alex ROCKED out. Smoke something/take a pill before you see them if you want to relive the old days….this is a different time. Not busting you. Just saying…We rocked out in Greensboro & REALLY enjoyed it. What was on YouTube was REHEARSAL.

Allan Holdsworth | 10/3/2007, 11:53 am EST

my exact point, not b*tching, but just being realistic, I think it will be a great show non the less. But, you do have to give consessions. The fact he can’t do his scream anymore doesn’t ruin the show, BUT, it was a major part of his style that is gone. Do I care about his kicks being 8 feet or 3 feet high, not really other than the fact it lose some youthful energy that is key in rock n’ roll. Some bands stand in place & play their notes, but bands like the STones, Zep, VH, Who, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Hendrix, in their primes, just BLASTED with high voltage sound & energy, & it WAS apart of what made that experience so powerful. They’d pour all they had into a note on guitar, F the amps…it just made the hair stand on your arms, & it wasn’t because he was tapping Eruption, it was cuz he was on his knees, head back, feeling that note…you get it. Ed can still bring that energy almost, so no complaints, just its not going to be that mind blowing experience like early….those impressed by the Stones blow up dolls & all, zzz, its the performance that makes you get the music shivers.

DLR LOVER | 10/3/2007, 11:48 am EST

Waldo, please come to Atlanta GA. I just saw you in G’Boro…if I could only get my hands on YOU!!! You are TOO SEXY!!! SO glad you are BACK!!!

Realistic | 10/3/2007, 11:37 am EST

People, please quit bitching about this….be realistic. How many of YOU are as limber/etc as you were 25 years ago? Damn! VH kicked ass! DAVE looked HOT, sounded GREAT, SEXY as HELL!

Allan Holdsworth | 10/3/2007, 11:01 am EST

i’m fired up for the show in Mass, & think it will rock, but like 78? I have no delusions of that, VH was electric from 78-81 live. Untouchable. Both musically & performance wise. i’ve seen the Youtube clips, & while no, that is not like the real thing, its not as energized as the old days, Roth carries the tune, but no pattened screams, he sort of walks around, his kicks are 25% what they were, they’re old! ITs not all intact as Dave says. Its still rockin’, no complaints, love the set list, but lets be realistic.

Waldo | 10/3/2007, 9:56 am EST

Whew! The laptop’s steamin’, & I’m hearin’ it from the folks that purchased a ticket, they were won over, who needs Viagra after they’ve seen the Mighty Van Halen. For the naysayers, just pick up a ticket, & I’m so sure you’ll see what the others are hearin’, but I’m an eternal optimist, when I go fishing, I bring a Nikon & a frying pan…all the energy’s there, we still bring the stage show that reflects what is musically happening, the show SHOULD look like it sounds. We’re a bit older, but I guarantee you the only thing that has changed is our haircuts & the shoes….I hear its dinosaur rock, you bet it is baby, we storm into the village, making lots of loud noise, stomping harder than any T Rex ought to. And we’re not going away anytime soon. I’m taking my face into places you wouldn’t bring a glock, and those bitten have been Van Halenized. Its infectous! Grab your gal, take the kids to neighbors & come see the show. Give it a try, I’m your last loose end!

A note for “the learned one” - boy, that “Sammy hagar” dude hooked you through the gills and right back into the eyeball!

You idiot, you can’t tell when someone is ingenuine. Go and Learn!

“VH lover” do you really think that was serious!

Waldo - Your lips must be made of anal tissue. Go straight to Dante’s hell, and take a left.

Robdawg - I have to give you props for being sincere. No bulls**t.

Sammy has had it going on since Montrose, and he doesn’t give a s**t what you or “Sammy Hagar” think.

I would rather go to Sammy’s Birthday in Cabo than some crappy concert in filly any day.

As Bill the Cat said THPTT! Yeah I’m hatin’

VH is a caricature of the once (79′) great band they were. Ask Micheal Anthony. Oh! by the way - El Perro - thank god van hagar is dead. Long live Bon Scott.

Live Nation | 10/2/2007, 10:58 pm EST

Whoever will be boycotting the concert because Michael Anthony is not there is not a Van Halen fan. Frankly, Van Halen does not need you. They want Van Halen fans, not Michael Anthony fans. People want to see Van Halen as a group regardless of who the bass player is.

Waldo | 10/2/2007, 12:22 pm EST

I’m up, I’m ready for a new adventure today. What were your thoughts on Philly friends, as you can see this is much more than a reunion, which to me suggests great aunts, jarred pickles & volleyball? Topical for sure…you can call this a reunion or you can call it a new band with a new vision, lots of hunger, bits & pieces of everything from South America, Vaudeville, some Heavy Metal, and elements of Norman Rockwell, the essence of what makes Van Halen a melting pot, you can run your hands over it, feel the weld marks so to speak. Sure, there’s blemishes, but I wouldn’t have it any other way, anything over polished is too processed in my opinion, I like the adventure, jumping on the bull, wondering if I’m going to conquer the beast, or get thrown off t
