The Phil Spector Trial: We Watch Court TV So You Don’t Have To

9/25/07, 9:01 am EST

WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY?
Exactly two weeks after they began deliberating in the murder trial of Phil Spector, the jury still failed to come to a unanimous verdict. There was some action in the courtroom, however. The defense filed a motion, on the heels of last week’s banished “Special Instruction 3,” that Judge Fidler include a new jury instruction that dictated Spector must be acquitted if the jury “thinks the defendant assisted Lana Clarkson’s suicide.” It was a rather odd request because the defense team hinted at a grim, bizarre situation in which Spector provided the gun to Clarkson, then verbally coaxed the drunken actress into shooting herself. But Spector’s defense team wants to ensure their client does not get convicted of assisting a suicide (as well as reinforce the defense’s suicide theory to the jury).

While the prosecution and defense discussed this matter in the judge’s quarters, the jury bell rang twice. A quick summary of what the jury bell represents: When the bell rings once, it’s time for the jury to go on a bathroom/snack/lunch break. Two times, the jury has a question, wants to see a piece of evidence or needs to speak to the judge. Three rings, the jury has come to a verdict. The last time the jury rang the bell twice was last Tuesday, when they told the judge they were deadlocked, so when the bell toll twice yesterday, nerves were on edge. The jury passed a note to a court officer who informed the court that the jury … requested a VCR. The jury was given a DVD/VCR (to prevent future requests for a more modern video player), and deliberations continued silently throughout the remainder of the day.

IS THIS GOOD OR BAD FOR SPECTOR?
Probably not good. The only VHS tape reportedly in evidence is Spector chauffeur Adriano de Souza’s police interview the day after his boss told him “I think I killed somebody” the night of Clarkson’s death. The fact that the jury is focusing on the most vital prosecution witness might be a bad sign for Phil. Spector’s team got a boost, however, when the judge told them he’ll tell the jury about the defense’s “assisted suicide = acquittal” claim if the jury comes to another verdict-less standstill.

I”ve not heard wether it has been confirmed/proved, that this wes spectors gun or not. Possibly this would be adequate proof of murder?

It seems all California juries are idiots. He is guilty as sin.
SHAME ON THE JURY.

rosepetal | 9/25/2007, 10:59 am EST

why would she choose to commit suicide @ phil’s house, when she could of done that in the privacy of her own home?

D.Kaser | 9/25/2007, 11:03 am EST

I think a mistrial is in order.

ser | 9/25/2007, 11:04 am EST

Just as people in glass houses shouldn’t through rocks nor should people playing with guns pull triggers.

annelouise | 9/25/2007, 12:10 pm EST

give everyone out here an f-g break – we know he is guilty and so does the jury. Someone from dateline is on the jury and so is a neighbor of Spector’s – tell me this drama isn’t for the soul purpose of making some sort of movie or book down the road. I hope the little bastard gets it good, either in prison or on the outside by a crazed fan. He murdered her!

The more I read up on this case {I just ordered the new book about Spector} the more things seem quickly glossed over.

I.E. The defense arguing that Spector’s prints DNA weren’t on the gun…
Then it’s reported by the DNA experts that Lana’s blood, remains would of course removed Phil’s .

I knew in my heart that he’ll get off but I felt a little bit better sounding off how OUTRAGED I am about the whole thing.
Really bums me out {the sytem}.

Kim | 9/25/2007, 12:24 pm EST

“I”ve not heard wether it has been confirmed/proved, that this wes spectors gun or not. Possibly this would be adequate proof of murder?”

That of course was one of the first things they check.
It WAS Spector’s gun,the also found {his} holster for it there.

TiaMaria | 9/25/2007, 12:35 pm EST

It would be so refreshing if the
American Juries would take their
heads out of their fame idolizing
asses and convict a famous murderer
for once!!This jury would have been
done deliberating a long time ago
if I would have come out of my
house, where there was a dead body,
and said “I think I just killed
someone”. Well, unless I’m a
famous, multi-millionaire!!!!!

John Lennon | 9/25/2007, 12:36 pm EST

Phillip,Mate didn’t you learn anything about what guns can do to innocent people?
You seemed genuine in your sadness in my being shot down innocently by an unstable person {such as yourself, sorry mate it’s true}.

STOP THE MADNESS

Didn’t you understand I was sincere when I penned/recorded songs like “Imagine”,”Instant Karma”?
I DID dream of a better non- violent, corrupt world.
So you were there just for the ride…
Didn’t truley share these sentiments I guess.

Bukowski,
I am impressed by your being so fast on dem feets!
Perhaps when this whole mess goes away you would like to visit my hermitage for some tasty brandy in one of my sniffers?
I can show you were I blew Lana’s head off, {a scratch that}, some of my vintage Austin Powers wardrobe, spin a few records. Who knows perhaps talk wifey into a four way with you+me+ chelle+ a gun?

Bukowski | 9/25/2007, 1:48 pm EST

phil’s going home

idigVampi | 9/25/2007, 2:09 pm EST

From his past history it is clear that Spector gets off by
threatening women with guns.We will never know exactly what happen
the night of the death but if you
play with a loaded gun often enough, someone is bound to get
hurt or killed.I think Spector deserves to be convicted and I
believe the jury will agree. That however is one thing which
no one can predict with certainity.

Bad Ronald | 9/25/2007, 2:44 pm EST

“phil’s going home ”

Hmm you’re being rather oblique…
I think most of us think he’s gonna walk,{even if we don’t think he’s innocent}
but do you think he’s guilty or not?
Just curious, there’s no right or wrong answer everyone’s entitled to their opinion…

A Casual Observer | 9/25/2007, 2:52 pm EST

“Fuck you, you pretentious nimrod! ”

That’s not really fair to resort to childish namrcalling if that’s how that poster feels.Besides Spector even threated LENNON during the recording of John’s “Rock And Roll” album with a gun. Not cool.
Do you not see the “irony” in Spector’s looney gun toting behavior, then one of his closest friends {John} wound up dying at the hands of a deranged nut?
Guns kill people,it’s not being “pretensious” in stating so.
How many innocent children have been killed through gang related childish, macho crapola with guns…
Come on I think that poster made a very valid point.

pretentious? | 9/25/2007, 4:01 pm EST

“Guns kill people,it’s not being “pretensious” in stating so.”

You spelled pretentious wrong, but it’s not germaine to the conversation.

The pretension is in putting words and sentiments and words in someone’s mouth to paint some kind of colorful picture. John never said those things and bringing his memory into this idea that you have is in very poor taste.

If you have something to say just say it. If your words have meaning you shouldn’t have to be couched in some cheesy diatribe where you use words like “mate.”

In all the interviews and clips I’ve seen him in, he’s never used that term even once.

Using that term makes you sound foolish and painting English people in some kind stereotypical light which is bigoted and racist, frankly.

If you don’t have the writing skills to recognize when your falling into horrible pretense, don’t go there.

Bukowski | 9/25/2007, 4:03 pm EST

Phil’s going home.

Yes I know! I can’t “type”.
You’re nit-picking.Hit a “nerve” there huh about John/Phil? guns.
John and pretty much everyone I know in the U.K. uses/used the word “mate” on a daily basis. What’s the got to do with issue @ hand?
YOU are the one who can’t give a decent debate about the case.
Anyone can state on the internet “well all the many clips I’ve seen” Whoop-de f@$%^ing- doo. For you.
Do a random search and it even comes up on Wikipedia {which I don’t really rely on all that much myself as an acredited source} BUT it’s there about Phil threatening John during the aforementined recording session, not to mention many other books etc.
Research,you’ll see.

P.S- Every notice how Big +Bad some people get on the safety of the internet?
In person you have no idea who, what someone is capable of doing.
Just ask Phil,he’s only what ??? 5′4″ or so.He managed to kill a pretty big girl.

P.S.- How would you feel if your hero Phil accidently discharged one of his guns during a recording session for one of the Beatles and it wound up being fatal and killing one of them or one of the other musicians there.
Would you still be so adament about him being innocent and all…

As we’re nit picking about spelling etc.
This {among many other grammar errors by yourself} is not a correct sentence.

YOUR words will have more impact if YOU STAY on the issue @ hand instead of diverting away by threatening people etc.
The John Lennon post was RELEVENT to the whole Spector saga as a whole. He worked with him,he didn’t support violence,he preached basically peace. He was shot innocently by a whack job {Mark David Chapman} with a gun.
Phil was good friends with Lennon.
Phil likes guns.
Phil is currently on trial for murder with a gun.
No irony huh?

Taken EXACTLY from Wikipedia:
“Stories of Phil Spector’s gunplay mounted over the years, including his discharging a firearm while in the studio with John Lennon during the recording of his cover album Rock ‘n’ Roll, placing a loaded pistol at Leonard Cohen’s head during the sessions for Death of a Ladies’ Man, and forcing Dee Dee Ramone to play bass guitar to Spector’s specifications at gunpoint.”

Very easy to locate Phil/gun erratic behavior stories.Too many around.Sure don’t always believe what you read and {I don’t} but how do you argue this guy not being dangerous.

Final thoughts on you {I am now bored}:
“John never said those things and bringing his memory into this idea that you have is in very poor taste.”

You totally missed the point.
argue me this:
John Lennon was not someone who didn’t approve of violence and did not rally against the war in Vietnam etc?
John Lennon did not write songs with lyrics preaching love, peace and their sentiments?
John Lennon was not shot with a gun by someone deemed mentally unstable?
John Lennon/Phil Spector were not good friends?

Phil Spector has a very long history with gun play @ home in the recording studio?

Phil Spector is currently on trial for murder with a gun?

Oh and John Lennon growing up in the U.K. and all never used one of the most common words used there “mate”?

Funny you mentioned this.I was reading in an encylopedia of rock I have about Spector the other day. It’s an older book way before this whole fiasco.Anyway,is Spector Jewish? Always wondered that. Doesn’t matter to me either way, just curious.

yeah, it was phil’s gun. bruce cutler outright LIED in his OS… what else is new, tho? the thinking by the def is that lana rooted around the castle until she happened across a gun…and then just spontaneously decided to “off” herself…uh…yeah..makes sense to me..how bout you??!! jeeezzz….

lizzy16162001@yahoo | 9/26/2007, 1:15 am EST

wow wee leave phil alone!! he is innocent and its very plain to see.look more deaply at the clues and u wont be able to find any. he will for sure walk from this… another innocent man draged through the court here wasting everyones time.

Recovering alcoholic/addict | 9/26/2007, 3:39 am EST

1). Please, nobody mentions that alcoholics/addicts commit suicide every day…in weird circumstances and lcoations. Check it out – you’ll be amazed at the places these problem people kill themselves at. Has anyone looked into her alcohol and/or drug use? And even if she wasn’t drinking/using at time of her death doesn’t mean she wasn’t a user or wasn’t affected by her habit(s). After all, she dod go home with a guy from House of Blues – didn’t even know him.
2). The limo driver…he quotes SP saying he thought he killed somebody. She probably just gave SP a bj and got into an argument or some sort of dispute…he may have had his gun out for show and she just up and shot herself…being upset I could see SP saying “I think I killed somebody.” Come on – he ain’t stupid you know? Why would he tell the driver he “done it?”

Kim | 9/26/2007, 10:49 am EST

“After all, she dod go home with a guy from House of Blues – didn’t even know him.”

This has no relevence,so you wound talking to him where she worked. He invited her over. From the tape outside House Of Blues it seems old Phil was really pushing for her to come as she can be plainly seen walking away from him.
On regular basis people meet and go home, motels, hotels whatever on a daily basis. Most don’t wind up dead by a suspect who just happens to have a VERY LONG history of threatening people with guns, dangerous behavior.
The staff of House Of Blues explained who he was being Lana told them she didn’t have any idea. After his nasal whining she most likely figured “he seems okay, maybe he’ll be a good connection etc” Went and had a drink and it all went wrong.
Phil will get off,it’s a damn shame. The system is a joke. I wait with much anticipation for the Rachelle/Phil murder, divorce trial show to air in the future.
