Hip-Hop on Capitol Hill: David Banner Sticks it to the Man

9/25/07, 5:02 pm EST

The Dirty South rolled up on Capitol Hill today, as rappers David Banner (left) and Master P testified before the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection in a hearing organized by Rep. Bobb Rush (D-Ill). Master P, who has renounced profanity in his lyrics, apologized to women for his old records: “I was honestly wrong,” he said. Banner, on the other hand — who, we must say, looks excellent in a suit — gave a spirited defense of strong language in hip-hop. “I’m like Stephen King: horror music is what I do,” he said. “If by some stroke of the pen, hip-hop was silenced, the issues would still be present in our communities. Drugs, violence and the criminal element were around long before hip-hop existed.”

Banner’s comments are fantastic. So typical of the suits being scared of trends of the young, trends of young black men, and other stuff they don’t understand. Banner’s comments were wonderful. Cheers for him and any other ARTIST in the U.S., hip hop or not

I believe in mankind’s ability to get past differences, rising above systems that disappoint us rather then allow ourselves to tear down our brothers and sisters just because we feel pain for their failure, which is when we all need help, and hope not wrath most of all.
That is why David is right and righteous in his message and method.
People all around the world, [thank you snoop] from Burma, to Slauson and Western the challenge for change is on those that send our people to jail instead of collage by creating something to sing about which reflects like a mirror our time. Respectfully, thanks David

Dude, I hate hip-hop, but Banner’s got a good point. Congress needs to stop censoring music. I’m cool with labeling albums as explicit but don’t try and snuff it out. They’ve got a right to say what they’re saying. Even they or I don’t agree with it.
