Single Minded: Girls Aloud, My Bloody Valentine Cover, Twenty-Minute Freestyle Battle and More

9/21/07, 10:45 am EST

Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more.

Girls Aloud, “Teenage Dirtbag” [Wheatus Cover]
That’s right — Wheatus cover. See, this is why British pop wins, because their chart acts are canny enough to know the value of rescuing forgotten Nineties rock singles. Marcy Playground, your ship may come in yet!

Business Man, “Dubby Game” [Chris Isaak Remix]
We can’t decide if we love this or it makes us feel like we’re trapped in an H&M. We’re leaning toward the former. Also, we’d like to try on this green mesh half-tee.

Getachew Mekuria & The Ex, “Eywat Setenafegagn” [Live in Holland]
We can’t read Danish so well, but we’re pretty sure this is legendary Ethiopian saxophonist Getachu Mekuria backed by anarchist collective the Ex. God, just that sentence is better than every other song in this week’s roundup.

Percee P. Vs. Lord Finesse Freestyle Battle [Live Footage]
In this 1989 face-off, two lyrical masters go head-to-head for a mind-warping twenty minutes. Watch this, and then see if you’re still excited about that Will.i.am album.

Japancakes, “Only Shallow” [My Bloody Valentine Cover]
If you ever wished MBV were sweeter and gentler, you should download this day-glo instrumental cover. You should probably also get rid of that Hello Kitty backpack and buy a few Led Zeppelin records.

Those Desperate Housewives are a bunch of skanky hos!

by the way, Dutch people prefer to call our land ‘the netherlands’ instead of Holland, cause Holland is just a small part of our country.

actually: in Holland people speak Dutch, not Danish. That’s what people speak in Denmark. ;-)

The track is indeed by Getatchew Mekuria & The Ex & Guests, but it’s not live, it’s on the record called Moa Ambessa they made in 2006. You should check out the whole record!

The piece on my blog says that i went to the gig and that it was great. It was not all about The Ex and not all about Getatchew Mekuria. It was the two come together.
