Radiohead Cryptically Post New Song Lyrics, Make Sudoku Seem Irrelevant

9/21/07, 1:17 pm EST

Their new album won’t be released until 2008 (and on what label remains an open question), but it looks like Radiohead aren’t done teasing us with details about their first LP since 2003’s Hail to the Thief. Two and a half months after their artwork depot Hodiau Direkton went on hiatus, a series of boxed faces with stick arms remerged on the site yesterday. For anyone who saw Zodiac, or just enjoys word games, it became obvious that these little boxes represented some form of cryptogram (for those outside the know, that’s a puzzle in which a symbol represents a letter of the alphabet). One RH fan on the fan site Ateaseweb.com diligently figured out that yesterday’s message spelled out “Yes, WeAre Still Alive.” Kind of vague, but maybe it was Radiohead’s way of making first contact with the fans. So today, to test our merit, Thom Yorke and the boys have posted another message (see above). This time, the code revealed lyrics to a song that will most likely feature on their new, still-untitled album. What does the cryptogram say? Figure it out yourself, or keep reading for the solution.

From the song “Bodysnatchers”:
BlinkYour

OneForYes
TwoForNo

RS should file this story under ” Who Gives A Flying Fuck”.

SVUF | 9/21/2007, 1:35 pm EST

Don’t get me wrong, I think Radiohead is a good band, but why all the mystery about the details of their up coming album!?! With their talents, they shouldn’t have to resort to something like the pictures of box figures in the above article! Commericalism I guess.

zippy peanut stutter | 9/21/2007, 1:48 pm EST

Apparently, Zippy does. Enough to curse, even.

Filler Fan | 9/21/2007, 1:55 pm EST

And my love of Radiohead is back!

Thom Yorke. | 9/21/2007, 2:20 pm EST

I am the fucking bomb.

Cleo | 9/21/2007, 2:40 pm EST

Hey thats pretty inventive, keeps the fans on thier toes and is good marketing

Lizzy Lizz | 9/21/2007, 3:21 pm EST

Radiohead scares me on so many levels. This is pretty heavy.

lol | 9/21/2007, 3:23 pm EST

i fucking love radiohead this is great

zippy peanut stutter fucker | 9/21/2007, 4:01 pm EST

Let’s be honest with ourselves here for one second. They have not put out a decent record in 10 years. We all just want The Bends and OK…come on with this Kid A shit…fucking twats.

Thom Yorke | 9/21/2007, 4:02 pm EST

Look at me–I look like a retarded one eyed pirate fucker. arrrhhh!

ajhs | 9/21/2007, 4:21 pm EST

thom surely looks hotter than you bastard

JohnMellor | 9/21/2007, 4:39 pm EST

I liked this band better when they were called Pink Floyd. If this record isn’t the Bends + OK Computer, zippy is absolutely correct – “Who gives a rat’s ass?” It’ll be no accident they don’t have a label.

j | 9/21/2007, 4:57 pm EST

I have deciphered the message. It says “we retire”. No, wait, that’s just wishfull thinking on my part.

Leonardo Da Vinci | 9/21/2007, 5:12 pm EST

Not exactly a perfect circle, is it?

aviation | 9/21/2007, 5:39 pm EST

since when could fucks fly?

supersonic | 9/21/2007, 5:46 pm EST

OOOOOOOOKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYY YYYY!!!

Anonymous | 9/21/2007, 5:48 pm EST

fuck you stupid bitches. radiohead is amazing. go listen to nickelback you twats.

Open Pick Of The Liffey | 9/21/2007, 7:55 pm EST

Bodysnatchers is a fine tune, but it will not be the opener of LP7. Like Joe Willie Namath, I guarantee it. Johnny Unitas-it’s time to grow long hair….THE BEAT GOES ROUND AND ROUND!!!

goochylittlepig | 9/21/2007, 9:18 pm EST

If Radiohead isn’t your type of music, why bother posting in this story? It’s like buying tickets to the ballet and then sitting there yelling, “YOU GUYS ARE GAY!”

:rolls eyes at all of you:

quasimodomouse | 9/21/2007, 9:24 pm EST

Kid A is my favorite album of all time. Thought you all should know. And I’m probably older than most of y’ins. …just sayin’.

Open Pick Of The Liffey | 9/22/2007, 1:00 am EST

quasi-my fav album of all time is also Kid A and I’m 45. What a sweet flow. So organic.

Bill | 9/22/2007, 1:08 am EST

anyone who doesn’t get the genius of RadioHead is just a dumb fuck…Trent reznor did and is doing similar things….brilliant minds think alike

i'venoideawhati'mtalkinabout | 9/22/2007, 2:28 am EST

Come on and let it out
Come on and let it out
Come on and let it out
Come on and let it out

Eusebius | 9/22/2007, 8:44 am EST

There’s something about listening to Radiohead that makes me want to go stick my head in the oven. Yeah, I recognize the genius and the musicianship, and I’m not one to shy away from songs, books, movies, etc. with “heavy” subject matter. But the overall effect – the processed vocals, the weird sounds, the feeling of alienation and the lyrics convey a feeling of hopelessness and despair. I guess that’s the point.

But come on Thom & Co. Yes, a lot about the world sucks – you don’t need to wallow in it!

Eusebius | 9/22/2007, 8:48 am EST

One more thing, addressed to goochylittlepig, Anonymous and zippy. Just because people don’t agree with you, that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t post. It’s called dialogue, innit? Opposing viewpoints. What makes the world go ’round.

Nadia the girl | 9/22/2007, 9:04 am EST

In today’s ever paranoid world, this sort of abstract code puzzle is not only timely and frightening, in terms of what the military does every day to bring down “the terror of the enemy”, but is a clue to the music itself.

Nadia the girl | 9/22/2007, 9:26 am EST

Don’t live in the grimy, soot covered basement, when you can escape to the freedom of the trees, to climb and hide amongst.

Central Intelligence Agency | 9/22/2007, 11:42 am EST

What the fuck? We can’t break it.

n | 9/22/2007, 4:57 pm EST

cant wait for lp7 and the ‘08 tour hopefully stopping by the greek in hollywood, it was awesome in ‘06.

Not drinking too much | 9/23/2007, 3:00 pm EST

Hey, I know that language. It’s called ‘We like to fuck with people on mushrooms’. Radiohead fucking rocks.

formerlyhip | 9/23/2007, 3:54 pm EST

I still stand by my theory that if Kid A or Amnesiac had been released
anonymously, neither one would have registered any more than a gigantic
WTF from Radiohead fans.
We can only hope for another OK Computer.

Bukowski | 9/23/2007, 3:58 pm EST

“Hail To the Thief” is a very overlooked record. A GREAT ONE. Better than A or amnesiac in my mind.

Gilbo | 9/24/2007, 8:22 am EST

A non-first album problem here, too litle to write about and too much time on their hands…

Lenny From Queens | 9/24/2007, 10:40 am EST

I agree Goochy, but I get the feeling that the more aggressively anti-head comments are based on the authors’ being intimidated by the music.

Thundercrotch | 9/24/2007, 12:10 pm EST

Perhaps a “Post Comment” Thesaurus is in order since it seems that most people commenting are resorting to using the f-word. Broaden your vocabularies. Radiohead demands articulate fans. They learned me well in school, didn’t them?

shepula | 9/24/2007, 12:45 pm EST

geeez. what a bunch of worthless comments. radiohead has produced much amazing music. every album is beautiful & if some of you simple feeble goofballs out there don’t like it. whatever. all the hate towards a band that matters. rock on nicklebackers. rock on. is nickleback good? never heard them.

ToFormerlyHip | 9/24/2007, 1:18 pm EST

You’re an idiot. I only owned Kid A and Amnesiac for three years and Kid A is one of my favorite records of all time. OK Computer is good, but it’s just OK. If you want to listen to another OK Computer, perhaps you could simulate that experience by not listening to that album so damn much and returning to it years later to discover that OK Computer has already been recorded and needs not to be recorded again.

ToFormerlyHip | 9/24/2007, 1:20 pm EST

To clarify: I did not own OK Computer for several years, and having purchased I did not see what all the anti-Kid A hype was about. If you want a cheesy, guitar-boning version of Radiohead, see Muse.

ToFormerlyHip | 9/24/2007, 1:22 pm EST

With that said, this story is a rip-off. RS creams themselves over Radiohead.

john | 9/24/2007, 4:53 pm EST

radiohead is truly the only band left that matters. go listen to fall out boy

JG | 9/24/2007, 7:51 pm EST

THE PUZZLE SAYS “CHINESE DEMOCRACY” (HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!)

RADIOHEAD: Best Live Band Ever.

Confession of a madman | 10/10/2007, 6:25 am EST

Radiohead possesses a musical talent that has not been displayed by 99.9% of artists today. Every album they have produced offers a unique and inventive sound. Granted, every album has its own sound, but you still get an intriguing and insightful album. I thank Radiohead for contributing their music talent to a society that is filled with mindless self-indulgence with no real taste for euphoric music…

Richard Johnson | 10/12/2007, 5:54 am EST

I know they are polls apart but the only two bands I hang out for their latest release are oasis and radiohead. oasis for the the base, human, raw emotion and radiohead for the cerebal.

radiohead have achieved pink floyd lke stature where they have gone their own way and don’t really care if you like it or not. oasis are equally if more honest and hae never sought public or critical favour. This honesty is a similarity between these two bands and probaly the reason I love them both. U2 sold out years ago for example.

Acronymous | 10/14/2007, 12:21 am EST

It’s a good day for music.
Thanks Radiohead.
Stay alive.

elizabeth | 10/19/2007, 4:31 pm EST

im making a song it`s call love im with you you`re so awsome look at you i know love love love love love everything with love is evrything with love

Glynn | 1/20/2008, 6:08 pm EST

Their music is extraordinary but they try too hard to put on the “Weird Show.” No need to go that far, boys: You are weird; Mission Accomplished.

soulsmurfer | 3/11/2008, 5:22 am EST

To you:

So I fear the dark,
The dancing light arrives too soon

I live to dream, not in the dark
I want to dream in the light

The darkness brings my dreams
The dream of your soul near mine

The darkness brings you to life
and this I fear for you disappear when it’s light

The morning light fades into my soul
reality checks my world

Your shadow disappears in the sunlight
Reality checks my world

Oh baby where are you now
Am I in your thoughts, right, anyhow

Will we still be together
Is this how it’s gonna be

Is this what it is to be free
Why won’t you leave my soul

Chorus
Oh baby
Why won’t you leave my soul alone
why don’t you ever phone
my love for you is raw
my love for you is forlorn

Is there some cryptic reason
why do I struggle to let go after every season

Is this some sick game
my mind ticks over, always the same

Is it my ego and why is it treating me so
Is this all making me grow

Would this have been in stall for me sometime in the future
if I had erred, would you have shunned me like some alein creature

you don’t want to speak to me
you won’t let me be free

you hang on just enough
are you calling my bluff

You touched my soul
you bathed me with warmth

but now I feel you cold
you want me gone but I am torn

For you I know I was born
A love so pure cannot be shorn

You may want to run and hide
you may choose another by your side

you may have left your land
taken another by the hand

looked lovingly into his eyes
whispering he is mine

how could this have happened
to a love so true

I could have asked you just to wait
I was afraid I was already too late

how was I to know
that by chance you had chosen another

maybe this was already done
was I just

maybe I was just a toy
played with, disgarded, just another boy

you stole my heart
you left me in this state

you were always mine
it was supposed to be our time

I long for your answers
but they will always be cold

you try to block me anyway, anyhow
I feel your pain reflected at me

you try to hurt me with your word
but alas my dear, I am fading

the damage done
I am almost gone

for the time has come to say goodbye
please let me go, ask not after me

I’ve cried for you till now
I’ve shed silent tears

till now it still hurts
the pain comes in daily spurts

my darling, my love
you will always be my soul, my love

I fear you have chosen well
for you, only time will tell

I smile for you
I cry for us

is this a final goodbye to you baby
is this what you have wanted
is this a final goodbye to you Nicola Wells

Thom Yorke's right eye | 7/2/2008, 8:01 pm EST

THE most innovative rock band since the Beatles…..”not put out a decent record in 10 years”….what the f*** do you listen to? Just saw them live in Glasgow, some good new music around but they’re still the best…and getting better.

zodiaclove | 10/10/2008, 12:17 am EST

Hello
I do not agree with what you said really….
please explain in detail a bit more for me :D

cheers

bloomberg | 6/11/2009, 1:54 pm EST

zippy you couldn’t be more wrong about the whole ten year thing, but besides that who else thinks their music is drug influenced?
