Dave Grohl Says Nirvana Wasn’t Just Cobain, Eddie Vedder and The Edge Talk Up The Who, The Game Free From Police-Impersonation Charges

9/21/07, 2:25 pm EST

  • Dave Grohl is sick of being considered nothing more than Nirvana’s fifth drummer, asserting that he (and bassist Krist Novoselic) were just as important to the band as Kurt Cobain: “We’ve been called hired guns and I just laugh … when one of those elements is removed from the combination. It just falls apart.” Earlier this week, Courtney Love resolved a Nirvana-related legal matter and agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to lawyers who represented her during her 2002 lawsuit against Grohl and Novoselic for control of Nirvana’s music.
  • Not one to be called a sore loser, 50 Cent has decided not to cancel his U.K. tour (where his Curtis lost to Kanye’s Graduation) and has instead rescheduled the eight-date tour for November.
  • The Who-approved documentary Amazing Journey: The Story of The Who, out on DVD November 6th, will feature previously unseen concert and archival footage including a 1964 concert when the band was known as the High Numbers. The doc will also feature interviews with U2’s The Edge, Eddie Vedder and Noel Gallagher.
  • Former Guns N’ Roses’ drummer Steven Adler fell ill onstage during a concert in Mexico City Wednesday night. Adler was touring with his band Adler’s Appetite to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of GNR’s Appetite For Destruction. Reports of Adler suffering from hypertension could not be confirmed.
  • Police impersonation charges against the Game have been dropped. The MC was accused of flashing a fake NYPD badge while attempting to flag down a taxi, telling the cab driver that he was an undercover agent and demanding to run red lights. The Game will still face trial September 25th for three felony charges stemming from an incident that occurred during a pick-up basketball game in L.A.

Dave Grohl is now officially an asshole. Come on, i mean, he was good in Nirvana, but Chad Channing and Dale Crover did great too. Nirvana is not about Grohl for sure. Nirvana is the songs of Cobain played by Novoselic and Cobain. Thats it.

JayStar | 9/22/2007, 9:44 am EST

Courtney Love’s legal settlement is sooo typical: The lawyers helped her win $9 mil and she refused to pay their $300,000 tab. “I did not fuck you,” she nonetheless said!

supersonic | 9/22/2007, 12:27 pm EST

Kurt Cobain was an overrated pop punk smack head. He was a millionare who was too wrapped up in himself to put his daughter’s needs ahead of himself. Poor Kurt, Poor Kurt. Fuck that.

Another Attorney | 9/22/2007, 1:26 pm EST

Courtney, the story says, also earned another $50 MILLION from the sale of just a quarter of her legal rights to Cobain’s music. But $340,000 was an overcharge?

thenerve | 9/22/2007, 3:03 pm EST

Kurt and Krist formed Nirvana before Dave came along. Chad Channing did the drumming on Bleach and Incesticide. In my opinion, Krist’s bass playing was quite innovative, while Kurt was the main creative nucleus and driving force behind Nirvana.

thenerve | 9/22/2007, 4:51 pm EST

…(with that said, all the drummers respectively deserve credit for their contributions)

yerongppl | 9/22/2007, 8:07 pm EST

dave was as much as an input to nirvana as the rest “senceless apprentice” was dave’s song and so was marigold, look it up and he’s not talking about the age before dave

Wondergirl | 9/22/2007, 8:20 pm EST

Courtney apparently thought Dave played an important role, since she sued him for song rights and legacy control.

Cheesecrop | 9/22/2007, 8:51 pm EST

In a true band (not a one man act w/ a stage name for a band) it would seem to be impossible not to contribute something. The amount is not the question, it is the act of contributing. Grohl definitely had a hand in Nirvana, just like Cobain and Novoselic. To deny it is to kid yourself.

Bukowski | 9/23/2007, 9:12 am EST

it’s very similar to Beatles with Ringo Starr. The Beatles were very good but not good enough. No label would touch them and they didn’t gel etirely until Ringo entered the picture. It’s the old adage, “if you don’t have a good drummer, then you don’t have a good band.” (nothing but nerve)

Bukowski | 9/23/2007, 10:50 am EST

agent provateur! get it?

thenerve | 9/23/2007, 12:20 pm EST

aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh, no I DON’T GET IT!

A Musician | 9/23/2007, 12:26 pm EST

“Krist’s bass playing was quite innovative. . .”

Innovative? You could teach his bass parts to a sand gnat!

Rocker Rollie | 9/23/2007, 12:28 pm EST

In the Seattle Weekly story it says Love denied that, when served with papers, she dropped them on the ground. Why don’t I believe that, or anything else she says about Dave et al?

A Musician | 9/24/2007, 1:31 am EST

Hmmm . . . This is interesting”This week in Pop Culture” (From AOL)

September 20, 1990. UNDERWHELMED by drummer Chad Channing, Kurt Cobain and Krist Novalselic invite Dave Grohl to join the Band. Later that year, they record the landmark album “Nevermind”

Dear A Musician | 9/24/2007, 10:52 am EST

You’re off-base. Your initial argument was against Krist, not Chad, so your point is irrelevant. Nevermind was the album which broke into the “mainstream”…have you not listened to any of Nirvana’s earlier music?

A Musician | 9/24/2007, 1:34 pm EST

No, my initial point was about Dave Grohl’s drumming. I used a different name. BTW, who the fuck are you to decide what’s relevant and what’s not!

A Musician | 9/24/2007, 1:44 pm EST

The point is that the band could not get a Major Label deal until Grohl joined.

If you knew anything about Major Label Deals and professional studio recording, you have to have a drummer of a pro stature in order to make it work.

What is it with you?
Does everthing need to be explained slowly so you can understand it?

Dear A Musician | 9/24/2007, 2:45 pm EST

These comment blogs are not the place to hold creative writing contests. They are “information” driven. Your point finally came across clearly after you had to explain it a second time. Your first comment was not clear. Leave it be.

Haterz | 9/24/2007, 6:32 pm EST

dave and krist deserve to get just as much credit as kurt, every single one of the members in nirvana helped to create their lengendary sound. With out dave grohl on the drums Nevermind would never sound as brillant as it does, same goes for all the other members.

Dana Androvette | 9/24/2007, 7:00 pm EST

First of all, Dave Grohl rocks and is far more prolific than Cobain ever was (but I do like Kurt)!

Secondly, you’re trying to insult a brilliant man.

When his name is plasted everywhere and he’s winning Pulitzers, Grammies, and Oscars (this is no hype. not even a little. you’ll see!), you’ll be giving free tours to school children and picking wax out of your ears!

Adios, loser!

Dear Dana | 9/24/2007, 8:38 pm EST

Don’t get your knickers all twisted in a knot. It’s a “given” that Dave is a great drummer. The world already knows it, and the majority of the comments here do not insult Dave; there is no need to be so defensive. All of Nirvana’s band members deserve recognition and credit for their unique talents, collaborations, and contributions.

Greg | 9/25/2007, 1:59 am EST

NEVER EVER COMPARE THE BEATLES TO NIRVANA…NIRVANA 1 GOOD RECORD .. THE BEATLES ENTIRE CATALOG A GEM..SEE NO COMPARISION…

Bukowski | 9/25/2007, 2:02 am EST

You’re absolutely right. My apologies.

compare is a 4-letter word | 9/25/2007, 2:41 am EST

And never ever compare Nirvana to the Foo Fighters – they sound entirely DIFFERENT from one another. Kurt also wrote all the music and lyrics for Nevermind.

1 can't count 2 7 | 9/25/2007, 5:03 am EST

well. . .umm . . . yeah. “compare” is a seven letter word. and you’re right: don’t ever ever compare the Foos and nirvana.
One band is an innovative hard rock tour de force and the other was a band who made depressing songs and ugly sounds . . . and they’re no longer around because their leader was a coward who took the easy way out and left his daughter fatherless. dave has three children that he loves and takes care of. that’s right don’t ever ever compare these two (I guess i just did, oh well).

Tootles

Oh yeah | 9/25/2007, 5:09 am EST

Dave writes all the music for ALL the ALBUMS the FOO Fighters make.

PINK Panther | 9/25/2007, 5:36 am EST

never ever? OOOOHHH, Darn it!

dear 1 can't count 2 7 | 9/25/2007, 5:57 am EST

Fair enough. You are entitled to your own opinion, taste and literal “interpretation”. I’m not going to prejudge Kurt Cobain’s personal life based solely upon what the media has written. I don’t believe everything I read.

dear 1 can't count 2 7 | 9/25/2007, 6:27 am EST

I need to rephrase part of my last comment. I do not “prejudge” anyone at all. And nor should you.

Sammy | 9/25/2007, 6:38 am EST

Dave made Nirvana stronger, and Krist and Kurt started the band….but, you could have backed Kurt with the kids from Hanson and you shit eaters would have ate it up. Let me guess, Pat Smear wasn’t a hired gun either, was he?

1 can't count 2 7 | 9/25/2007, 6:47 am EST

“I do not “prejudge” anyone at all. And nor should you.”

First of all, you can do whatever the hell you want. But when it comes to me, I don’t need someone like you telling me what to do, ok?

“I’m not going to prejudge Kurt Cobain’s personal life based solely upon what the media has written. I don’t believe everything I read.”

Does this mean that you don’t believe that Kurt blew his head off? Because he did! He’s not JFK, he would be little more than a footnote in rock history had there not been a plot to murder . . . no, I don’t think so . . . if he hadn’t blown his fuckin’ head off!

you're not my mommie | 9/25/2007, 6:58 am EST

Cobain’s personal life based solely upon what the media has written. I don’t believe everything I read.”

Kurt blew his brains out all over his livingroom floor. End of story.

Run to the Hills
Run for your Life

territorial shittings | 9/25/2007, 8:32 am EST

why is it when you have an article about Dave Grohl, why do people have to whine, bitch, and moan about Kurt Cobain.
yada, yada, yada, blah, blah, blah. woe is me. All I know is, the Foos got a new CD coming out today. Why do I have to listen to the same tired crap about Kurt Cobain? It’s ancient history. Let it go, you know?

GreenZafiro | 9/26/2007, 12:03 pm EST

Wow.. i jsut read MONSIEUR comment…he should be allowed only to listen to Hannah Montana !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Izabael DaJinn | 11/1/2007, 6:43 pm EST

“When one of those elements is removed from the combination. It just falls apart.”

Well, I have to admit he makes a good point. I think the same thing whenever I listen to the steaming pile of poo called “Foo Fighters.”

Solo | 10/3/2008, 7:46 am EST

The band would have been nothing without Kurt, Dave and Kris could have been replaced with anybody who could keep a beat. Dave was always the guy craving attention, resenting the fact that Kurt was the face of Nirvana. And he hated the fact that his job was to keep his mouth shut, not sing, not write songs, and fill a role.

no name | 11/28/2008, 2:24 pm EST

In regard to “territorial shittings” comment of,”why is it when you have an article about Dave Grohl, why do people have to whine, bitch, and moan about Kurt Cobain.”

Because that’s the only reason anyone knows who Dave Grohl is. Kurt.

kurt | 8/2/2009, 10:48 am EST

fuck you all let kurt rest in peace
