Thats true, MCR aren’t the epitome of emo mediocrity. They actually do some fairly operatic arrangements and have some depth. They could do plenty worse. That checklist wasn’t specifically for them.

Even though this subject has gotten covered in a couple of cheesy 80’s songs, it’s all rock and roll. Any labels like “Emo”, “Grunge”, or “Nu-Metal” are all record companies way of promoting new bands. All the terms are meaningless. I’m tired of the lame debates over arbitrary terms describing the same kind of music. The last new music term that was actually revelent is “Rap”.

I think Aristotle may disagree with you JP. There are differences between these groups that make them far from meaningless. Style, although less significant than the artists ability and passion, still matter. Just like how I know without listening that unyielding grunting death metal is a waste of time, I know from just being told the category of music whether it is worth hearing.

There are so many people who says that MCR is EMO.etc, which is not true. I don’t think it’s right to put a band in the EMO-category just ’cause they may sound a bit like this genre or to put a person in the EMO-category just ’cause the person may wear clothes who looks a bit like this genre. After reading this statement, I have just gained a great deal of respect for Gerard. The term “EMO” is an overused, overgeneralized statement utilized by those who do not fully understand what they are categorizing. Unfortunately, because ignorance is the majority, the “EMO” term (which was simply meant to be short for emotional) has a significantly more negative connotation in relation to its original meaning. Hopefully more bands will speak out on the ridiculousness of this term and it will quickly die out as a means of “labeling” artists.

Yeah this is a little late…but my chemical romance. It’s emo. Things are labled for a reason. A chair is a chair because you sit on it. Lables help us know what the difference is. And big words do not change that. Although they seem to be doing everything they can to get away from the label “emo” their old songs won’t be forgotten so easily.

I don’t think that the band MCR is emo…I do think that most of their fans are though. Maybe their music is sometimes too, but why the hell does it matter so much? Why is it INSULTING to be emo? Emo is just a word…people use it to poorly describe people who wear dark tight clothes and listen to lyrics that have deep meaning to them. I was called emo before I was even an emo kid!! I only call myself emo cause that is the only way I can describe myself without people saying “that sounds goth…” It shouldn’t matter anyways. So what if someone is a little different then you? Get used to it, no one is the same. No one deserves to be teased…called “a pile of shit” or even beaten (yes, even I have gotten beaten up for being myself!) just because of who they are and what they like. As one of my favorite quotes says “The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom” So I am ignoring society or anyone else who doesn’t like my makeup until they can grow a brain and look past all of it!!

mcr’s lyrics are metaphorical, and they did USED to have dark “emo”-like lyrics when gerard was on drugs. he was suicidal at one point in time. he’s since sobered up.

i always thought mcr were a punk band and panic at the disco were a pop punk band with theatrical influences and the emo word and the genre is just plain stupid.. im pretty sure that all the music u here nowadays are emotional…

Emo, is emo core, a style that is usually confessional lyrics and melodic tunes. yea sure, MCR arent always on about life problems and shiz, but they have been, and there is still a constnat feel/theme to their music which in turn encourages people to lable them as emo.

when bands/people turn around and say that emo is bullshit, thye’re just being ignorant, becuase without the emo core scene, we wouldnt have had sunny day real estate, and rites of spring, and in turn, no foo fighters either.

the image of suicidal teenagers may be associated with this genre, but it shouldnt deter people from trying to understand it more.

yes, i fully believe that my chemical romance are emo, and just dont want to be blamed, or have people saying they influence suicide, or self harm. a lot of their lyrics side with the term emo, than not emo

With bands some write lyrics for meaning some write them to rhyme others because they sound good, lyrics are sometimes originated around real events just because they do that doesn’t make it EMO, it makes it meaningful and unique, songs have different meaning to different people some have no meaning just a catchy tune so why do meaningful songs get classed as EMO by people that (1) don’t know anything about it (2) it sounds it so they assume its EMO and (3) have no life so they go round mislabelling things PEOPLE DO EVERYONE A FAVOR AND JUST SHUT UP UNLESS YOU KNOW THE FACTS.

If someone says they’re not something you better believe them because I’m sure they know a lot more about themselves than you or anyone else put together will ever know.

I think that if you classify My Chemical Romance as emo, then you may as well classify William Shakespeare as emo too. In fact, Shakespeare’s tragedies are way more “emo” than any of My Chemical Romance’s songs because he actually wrote about people committing suicide. MCR is more aggressive than depressing, therefore exuding a punk aura. Appearance is not even relevant to being “emo”. For one to be emo, you have to either (a) attempt to commit suicide or mutilate yourself in whatever way, (b) be incredibly emotionally unstable or most importantly, (c) CLASSIFY YOURSELF AS EMO. And I hate you all for calling them emo and probably discouraging them from writing music, because they haven’t written anything lately. >:( for shame.
