Meg White is temporarily out of commission, so Jack White has found a new performance partner: Bob Dylan. White shocked the crowd at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium last night when he joined Dylan for the first ever live performance of the Blood on the Tracks gem “Meet Me In The Morning.” White’s band The Raconteurs opened for Dylan last year but the two never shared the stage. (Their only other prior duet was at a Dylan concert in Detroit four years ago when they did the White Stripes song “Ball and Biscuit.”) Elvis Costello, who is set to join the Dylan tour this Saturday night, also surprised the crowd with a brief solo acoustic set after opening act Amos Lee.

I was there and it was amazing. Thanks to Bob and Jack I now have a favorite Dylan song. Jack looked legitimately humbled to share that stage with Bob. It was beautiful. Elvis hung out in the sound booth (in the balcony) for most of Bob’s set too, which was cool.

Jack White and Dylan were absolutely electric. It was one of the finer moments of all of the Dylan shows I have seen. Bob did play guitar on several songs, but spent most of the night on the keyboard. A fantastic show.

It’s just sad that Jack couldn’t muster up the courage to make an appearance at the Austin City Limits fest once they bailed at the last minute. He could’ve appeared with Dylan closing night and maybe then people would have been more forgiving of them both.

The sound of the Ryman bricks and wood makes it sound so rich and warm, everything sounds clear and beautiful. One of the best Dylan shows I’ve ever heard and seen, thank you Nashville. Amos Lee was great, then to everyone’s surprise Elvis Costello walked out looking very cool with a nice black suit and began with (The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes”, he was fantastic. Then Dylan performed and each song got a standing ovation. He was and is so wonderful. He played many perfect songs, Spirit on the Water, Masters of War…and Desolation Row…and danced and played and rocked the house down through “The Levee’s Gonna Break”. Every single song was so good, how can anyone be THAT good, but he is and always has been THAT good. Then the crowd went absolutely wild when Jack White suddenly appeared and broke into Meet Me in the Morning, howling beautifully through his version which was way over the top – his guitar solos on it were really stunning and loud and very clear, it was gorgeous and everyone was totally jaw dropped…it was just shocking how good the entire show was. I’ve been to hundreds of concerts but this was one was really special.

Calvin, he plays guitar usually on the first three or four songs, then switches to keyboard. You can see all of the set lists and lots of fan reviews at the expectingrain.com web site, center for all things Dylan. Link for the set lists is:

Yeah I think Jack should play shows in every city the White Stripes had to cancel shows to satisfy people who can’t understand his partner suffered a mental breakdown. Get real!

I was at the Ryman show Wednesday. Probably the 7th or 8th time I’ve seen Dylan. This was by far the best. I feel lucky to live here in Nashville with the Ryman close by – if you’ve never seen a show there, it’s worth the trip. Jack, Elvis, and Amos were all great!

ZIMMERMAN’S FINEST OUTING IN 20 YEARS WAS ENGAGED LAST EVENING AT THE RYMAN.
IT WAS EVIDENT THAT HE WAS WELL AWARE, EVEN AFTER ALL OF THESE SUNSETS, THAT THE EVENT NEEDED TO BE CONSIDERED A NOBLE ACT IN LIGHT OF THE HISTORIC RAMIFICATIONS.
BOBBY LIVES ON THE ROAD AND HANK DIED ON THE VERY WOOD HE WALKED UPON WHEN HE WAS EVICTED FROM OPRYLAND FOR BEING TOO MUCH LIKE HIS KID IS TODAY, SANS THE DEPRESSION.
BUT THE KID CAN HANDLE IT AS CAN MR. Z.
STILL, IF REALITY IS TO BE IGNITED, THE FACT IS THAT ELVIS COSTELLO DEMONSTRATED A GENIUS WHICH THE THIN MAN HAS NOT ENACTED IN OVER 30 YEARS.
I AVOID SEEING ZIMMY AT ALL COSTS BECAUSE I AM REMINDED THAT BEING THE FINEST POET AND COMPOSER OF SONG IN THE LAST HALF CENTURY DOES NOT EQUATE WITH AN ABILITY TO PRODUCE LIVE MAGIC.
AT ALMOST THE SAME AGE, LEONARD COHEN IS ENIGMATIC WITHIN THE FOOTLIGHTS.BOBBY IS A BEAUTIFUL ARTIFACT WHO NEEDS TO REMARRY AND CHASE HIS HAUNTINGS AWAY WITHOUT OUR ASSISTANCE.
IF HE UTTERED ONE POLITICAL WORD, I WOULD BOW IN REVERENCE.
BOBBY BUILT THE MUSIC NOW DISPLAYED UPON MULTIPLE GENRES.
HE ASLO BUILT A DRAMATIC SHRINE WITHIN HIS VOTERS WHICH ASSISTED IN DISMANTLING CONFLICTS AND FREEING THE CONDEMNED, NOT ALL OF WHOM LIVED WITHIN THE PRISON SYSTEM.
HE EMANCIPATED MILLIONS OF MINDS.
NOSTALGIC CONSEQUENCES ASIDE, JACK WHITE PROMOTED WHAT VINCE GILL HAS KNOWN FOREVER ABOUT THE JADED FORMATIONS OF FAME.
IT’S A YOUNG MAN’S TOWN.

Bb Dylan is out of this world when you you think about it. On the one hand still spinning the best top ever and on the other a master of the rehash and recycling older songs and earlier versions. I don’t really understand why anyone would get involved with him.
