On the Charts: Kanye West, 50 Cent, Kenny Chesney Lead the Way to Monster Sales Week

9/19/07, 12:32 pm EST

The Big News: As you already know, Kanye West beat 50 Cent in their debut-week sales showdown, but the real winner is the music industry. Kanye’s Graduation sold 957,000, the biggest single week tally since 2005, when 50’s The Massacre sold 1.1 million in its debut week. According to Billboard, it’s the 15th biggest sales week since Nielsen began tracking sales in 1991. 50’s Curtis moved 691,000, which, despite losing to Kanye, easily tops the year’s previous top debut (Linkin Park’s 623,000). The only other time since 1991 that the top two albums each sold more than 600,000 each came in September of that year, when Guns N’ Roses Use Your Illusion I and II sold 770,000 and 685,000 respectively. Country star Kenny Chesney’s latest sold 387,000, finishing number three with a figure that would earn him the number one spot almost any other week. Just to give you an idea what a departure these numbers are from the industry’s endless sales drought: When you add up the top four — including last week’s number one High School Musical 2 soundtrack, which sold 133,000 this week — you get 2.2 million CDs sold, which is more than the top 200 albums combined sold last week.

The Debuts: After the top three, it’s a long drop to the next new record: A third Grey’s Anatomy soundtrack landed at number sixteen, moving a comparatively paltry 27,000 units; Trisha Yearwood’s Greatest Hits debuted at number twenty-two with 22,000; And R&B-boy band B5 sold 19,000 and hit number twenty-seven.

Last Week’s Sales Heroes: Perennial top-tenners, including the HSM2 and Hannah Montana 2 soundtracks, Fergie, and Now! 25 all dropped back a few slots to make room for the newcomers. MySpace-made star Colbie Caillat continues to scale the charts, with a 25 percent jump in sales and a corresponding leap from number fourteen to eight.

kanye is a no talent ass clown | 9/19/2007, 12:51 pm EST

who cares? this battle was bullshit to begin with. Does anybody think 50 is goi to retire like he omised he wouldif he lost to kanye? doubt it but I hope so.

And what, kanye was able to trick that many people to ignore the fact that he ripped off daft punk (this after hripped off thom yorke’s “the eraser”).

Dude just rapped OVER THEIR BEAT!!! it is not a sample, its just what he did at Live Earth to the police!!! how do people not see that?

youre dumb | 9/19/2007, 1:07 pm EST

youre dumb..spell check your crap

BigCricket | 9/19/2007, 1:46 pm EST

So you’re going to get at Kanye for using a Daft Punk sample when Daft Punk sampled old 70’s disco groups and just added a vocoder over there lyrics riggghht buddy you’re an idiot. Go to youtube.com and search stronger and daft punk you will find a posting put on there that plays daft punk track and the original and you won’t hear that much difference at all. It was paying homage to techno, house, and all that euro type of music that’s popular and refreshing it to those who might not know about it.

On top of that the marketing alone was pure genius, not to mention that the album itself is great. As well to get people to actually buy records instead of downloading them. Essentially you won’t even know an artist because no one is going to buy an album and they aren
t going to make any money off sales or should I say the record company. Contrary to belief at least they are able to put some type of quality into a song instead of hearing the local trash that your homeboy is pushing trying to get on, and the sound quality is horrendous.

It was great period for Hip Hop if you pay attention the powers that be are already trying to push us out. BET is moving Rap City to 1 A.M. who is going to stay up that late to watch rap videos. No R&B just hip hop the whole situation is garbage. Not the fact that you have to stoop to such tactics in order to get people to stop jacking music. Now I will admit if somebody’s tracks are just straight trash then that’s what it is. This also further let’s the record companies what we want to hear. You have the gangsta, hustla, typically labeled bad guy 50 who just got outshined by the nice guy, clothes fitting, substance having to a majority of people wether in the hood or not, outspoken guy that was considered an underdog. You don’t think they are paying attention into who they are going to start signing. Hell the concious movement is about to begin if we can get emcees that don’t necessarily start preaching. well I didn’t mean to make this into a lecture but that just pisses me off when someone wants to berate another person’s talent especially when they haven’t done anything to solidify why they can make such a comment besides freedom of speech PEACE!!1

The first poster is acting like a rapper never stole a song before. Are you kidding?

I agree with Cricket– anything that gets people to BUY ALBUMS instead of downloading singles (legally or otherwise) is a great thing.

DAVID | 9/19/2007, 2:44 pm EST

Stronger is FANTASTIC ,and how did he f–king steal anthing??/ First of all, He ASKED daft Punk and got permission. Second of all, Daft Punk were in kanye wests music video and have publicly said that they like the song Stronger. Third of all, He has said in many interviews that He thinks that “Harder, Bettern, Faster, Stronger” Is a much better song that his own Song stronger. Fourth of all, Give the the names of 3 popular rappers that have NEVER sampled another song. Even Eminem, the greatest rapper alive, sampled Beat for his song “My Name Is”.

bodi | 9/19/2007, 3:07 pm EST

Mistake. Guns N’ Roses Use Your Illusions 1 and 2 came out in 1991 not 2001.

GNR | 9/19/2007, 3:42 pm EST

Guns N’ Roses= a million times better than both 50 and kanye

HipHop "kanye is a no talent?" | 9/19/2007, 3:48 pm EST

Do you even understand that Hip Hop from the very begining was built off of sampling. It is part of the art of Hip Hop. If you know anything about rap music then you would know everybody samples it is not something to be looked down at its part of style and creativity of hiphop. And Kanye is Genius by the way one of the last creative rappers left pay attention

matt | 9/19/2007, 5:31 pm EST

i’m all with *HipHop “kanye is a no talent?”* who ever he/she is, they’re absolutely right.

Drew | 9/19/2007, 5:58 pm EST

Graduation > Every album that has dropped so far this year

Cheesecrop | 9/19/2007, 6:42 pm EST

It’s all hype. Without the talk up they’d be nowhere.

Daniel | 9/19/2007, 7:13 pm EST

The news last week was humble pie for 50 and Kanye, due to Kenny’s album. “What crap,” I thought when I read it, and now we have proven through this historic week in music, that music commentators / speculators are stupid, irrelivent and arrogant.

historic my ass | 9/19/2007, 10:16 pm EST

this is a forgotten last breath for salvation from the rap industry, yea hthey sold a lot of albums thanks to clever marketing and 13 year olds whose parents wont let them download the music on thier computer….5 years ago hip hop artists would have never pulled this stunt but then again 90 % of them are now one hit wonders..these are the last two giants of hip hop holding the whole industry on their shoulders…word on the street is dr. dre is jumping in with his long awaited album to help save it, but its far to late and far to gone..

JD | 9/19/2007, 11:57 pm EST

“Stronger” should be #1 on the Billboard charts this week. The song is infinitely catchy and too good to be called rap. it would have been #1 already if it weren’t for the flavor of the month rapper Soulja Boy with a very generic and derivative rap song with the word That in the title. If Kanye complains that he should be #1, he has good reason to complain.

jaoman1 | 9/20/2007, 10:38 am EST

stop hating, you are fools. the numbers speak for themselves. kayne is much more than rap and should be applauded. 50 is nice and this rock fan bought both albums. great week in music regardless of what the haters say.

James | 9/20/2007, 4:21 pm EST

Kanye is a breath of fresh air in the rap game. It’s no wonder he crushed 50 in album sales!

Shaka | 9/20/2007, 8:54 pm EST

Regardless of who sold more records, these two talents are more than an asset to the Hip Hop world. They should both be given the respect they deserve. We all got favorites but does that make you a music lover? Look ay what they did just days before the albums were released…both…on stage performing TOGETHER…sending a message to the fans……..nooooo beeeeeeef.

PMM | 9/20/2007, 11:12 pm EST

Does anybody even remeber what September 11 is really about or is everyone so interested in music. It is great to see where our country is going

Allen | 9/21/2007, 8:18 am EST

IT dosent matter what beat he used or where he got it from. Kanye made a hit and gave credit where credit was due. You people continue to critize kanye and other artists. i dont see you selling millions of CDs. So if your not doing as well as or better than kanye then stfu.

Dear Allen | 9/22/2007, 1:51 am EST

We don’t see YOU selling millions of CDs either. Shut the fuck up with such a juvinile and pointless argument.

kam | 9/25/2007, 5:01 am EST

remember what september 11 was about? yes, but bringing up the obvious dangers of blind religious faith in unprovable and ancient dogma never makes people happy. so lets just talk about the music
