New Music Tuesdays: Eddie Vedder, James Blunt

Rolling Stone’s Christian Hoard presents the “sensitive souls edition” of New Music Tuesdays, examining Eddie Vedder’s soundtrack to the film Into the Wild and James Blunt’s sophomore album All the Lost Souls. The verdict: Vedder’s LP is an apt soundtrack for the subject matter at hand (and a winner for Pearl Jam fans), and Blunt’s new album is a slightly sappy improvement over his debut, which featured the ubiquitous “You’re Beautiful”; though Hoard believes it only serves to make Coldplay sound exciting. Man O man. Jesus really looks drugged out doesn’t he?

Jim Morrison??? | 9/18/2007, 12:52 pm EST

I heard someone say that Eddie Vedder sounds like Jim Morrison. Sounds more like SHIT if you ask me!

river | 9/18/2007, 2:51 pm EST

Eddie Vedder sounds like Eddie Vedder. Jeff Martin sounds a lot more like Jim Morrison.

Hunter | 9/18/2007, 4:12 pm EST

EDDIE VEDDER is a BETTER singer than Jim Morrison. He has higher range than Jim Morrison; his voice is more emotional, and, his voice is just more powerful.

ON TOP OF THAT – Eddie Vedder is a good guitarist, whereas Morrison couldn’t play an instrument. Also, Eddie is a better SONGWRITER than Jim is (the Doors wrote the songs, NOT Jim) – Jim just wrote the lyrics…

AND EDDIE VEDDER’S LYRICS ARE BETTER.

Jim Morrison has one thing & one thing over Eddie Vedder only – He’s bigger in pop culture due to various reasons which have nothing to do with actual musical ability or talent – In Which Eddie slaughters Morrison.

Jim Morrison??? | 9/18/2007, 7:23 pm EST

Jim Morrrison is dead.
Eddie Vedder’s dead too, and people keep trying to tell him that,
But he’s in complete denial.
And you are too.

Cheesecrop | 9/18/2007, 8:30 pm EST

Eddie’s album should be interesting.

Kevin | 9/18/2007, 9:28 pm EST

Quit hating on James Blunt.

dam | 9/19/2007, 12:27 am EST

Eddie Vedder sounds like a coked out has been.

Morrison had a set a golden pipes.

Now don’t argue with me, woman. Go on with your life now, or lack thereof.

Bop Gun Jr. | 9/19/2007, 12:39 am EST

Eddie Vedder, pffff. He’s a surfer duuuuuuuuuuuuude who MTV pushed onto america, cynically knowing Pearl Jam was a cuter, better dressed version of Nirvana.
Pearl Jam couldn’t find a memorable hook if you handed it to them.
Eddie’s a non-offensive little guy who if he hadn’t lucked into fame would be working at Safeway stocking shelves at night and catching gnarly waves duuuuude during the day.
James Blunt, lol. Wait, I can’t type anymore…..I can’t see the keys, the tears of laughter are blinding me. Only way I can explain him is every generation needs a Barry Manlow. And of course every generation of young girls needs a whimp to dole out revolting love songs som they can dream about boys after watching High School Musical.

SOOPERSONIKK | 9/19/2007, 12:48 am EST

You’re preachin’ to the choir!!!
Right on, brotha!!!

evil Eskimo | 9/19/2007, 5:51 am EST

If I ever heard Eddie Vedder write a song as lyrically unintelligent as “Light my Fire” May God strike me down with a fury of James Blunt/Jim (drunken Buffoon) Morrison songs to torture me forever. Eddie Vedder is more Rock and Roll than those two ever could have been. the Doors ruined Rock and Roll for alot of years, thank God we have people like Eddie Vedder to turn to when life hits us with a bucket of crap like James Blunt or the Doors. Now go do what the TV and radio tells you to before you have to start thinking for yourself.

Anonymous | 9/19/2007, 8:33 am EST

i want to have vedder’s babies!

slagathor | 9/19/2007, 8:35 am EST

vedder is the greatest thing to happen ever

eye no | 9/19/2007, 9:24 am EST

i dont care about either of these two people

That Guy | 9/19/2007, 11:32 am EST

Any one who thinks that Eddie Vedder or Pearl Jam is washed up or unimportant to music needs to pull their head out of their ass and stop listening to crap like My Chemical Romance. And the douche who said “Eddie Vedder, pffff. He’s a surfer duuuuuuuuuuuuude who MTV pushed onto america, cynically knowing Pearl Jam was a cuter, better dressed version of Nirvana.
Pearl Jam couldn’t find a memorable hook if you handed it to them.” First Eddie fights that system, when is the last time you saw them on MTV not to mention their fight against ticket master. Second they cant right a memorable hook, one of the dumbest things ever written on here…..Jeremy, Even Flow, and Alive are some of the best known hooks in all of rock. So go play and traffic while listening to EMO.

supersonic | 9/19/2007, 1:41 pm EST

“the Doors ruined Rock and Roll for alot of years, thank God we have people like Eddie”

Yeah. Okaaayyy!!!

JP | 9/19/2007, 4:45 pm EST

First of all, stop hating James Blunt because “You’re Beautiful” got extremely overplayed. He does not control over how many times his songs gets played. James Blunt is one of those “Fuck you, I like him!” artist. His music may not change the world like [fill in the blank with iconic artist/band]. Yet his songs are good enough to enjoy when you are in a mellow mood.

I’m anxious to see “Into The Wild” and get the soundtrack. Anybody who says Pearl Jam is washed up and didn’t matter in the first place is a moron. First of all, it could be argued that Pearl Jam was the best band out of the Seattle grunge scene. Consider how many neo-grunge bands in the late 90’s and early 00’s copy Pearl Jam sound (Creed and Nickelback are the worst offenders). Proves that Pearl Jam are influential. They are not washed up because Pearl Jam released one of the best albums last year. Case close.

The bottom line is both of these albums are going to be better than the over-hyped releases last week by 1/2 Dollar and Ka*YAWN*ye.

Bop Gun Jr. | 9/20/2007, 1:20 am EST

Ahhh !! You’ve got your panties all in a bunch “That Guy” ! There’s always something homo-erotic about rock star worshiping, personally I outgrew hero worship when I was 9.
Eh, emo ? I’m 44. I grew up on the Sex Pistols, Clash, Ramones, The Replacements, Husker Du,and then went back and discovered Jimi, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Zydeco, The Stones, Fats Domino, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Skip James, The Mekons, NY Dolls……
Jeremy ? Even Flow ? Alive ? I sneeze in your general direction !
All completely without hooks, even know what a hook or riff is “That Guy”. ALL were MTV pushed VIDEO hits, the songs themselves were faceless, dull, uninpsired, with a vague sense of teen angst. Nirvana blew the doors off the silly buggers.
Kurt – “Well, I like the guys in Pearl Jam, but I think their music sucks”
Right on my dead brother…..

to Bob Gun Jr. below | 9/20/2007, 11:45 am EST

You know, Kurt Cobain hating Pearl Jam’s music doesn’t matter for a few reasons…

1) Pearl Jam has 8 studio albums… Cobain was alive for the first 2 only, think about that – only 1/4 of Pearl Jam’s catalog – Which means for all you know, he could’ve LOVED Pearl Jam’s later albums, seeing as how they sound nothing like their first 2. You have no way of knowing that. So since Kurt has been dead for over 13 years, his opinion on their music, quite frankly, is completely irrelevant & insignificant in 2007.

2) Cobain may of hated Pearl Jam’s music… But one of Cobain’s biggest icons & influences was Frank Black, the singer/songwriter of the Pixies. Guess what?… Frank Black has stated that he didn’t even like Nirvana’s music at first. If Nirvana could grow on Frank Black, Pearl Jam could’ve grown on Kurt.

3) I think it’s pathetic to not respect Pearl Jam’s music as much as they deserve respect just because Cobain didn’t – Aren’t you an individual? Do you think it’s cool to just steal the opinion of a dead rock star?…
… I wonder how many people today actually dislike Pearl Jam’s music… compared to how many people who PRETEND to dislike it & force themselves to change the radio when they hear PJ, just because they heard Kurt insult them & think it’d be “uncool” to listen to Pearl Jam – thats pathetic & very conformist. You sound like one of those people Bob Gun… they’re easy to spot because they bring up Kurts dislike for Pj in topic as if that’s a reason YOU should dislike them… YOU’RE NOT COBAIN JACKASS.

to Bob Gun Jr. below | 9/20/2007, 11:52 am EST

“ALL were MTV pushed VIDEO hits, the songs themselves were faceless, dull, uninpsired, with a vague sense of teen angst. Nirvana blew the doors off the silly buggers.”

It’s funny, you say that about Pearl Jam… but the same thing for someone elses point of view could accurately be said about Nirvana. I always thought Nirvana had a vague sense of teenage angst, whereas Pearl Jam was the one who blew the doors off the “silly buggers”. There’s much more depth in songs like Black; Jeremy; Alive & Even Flow than there was in the vast majority of songs off Nevermind.

Cobain said Smells Like Teen Spirit was about “friendship”… ain’t that sweet? Alive is about a mother forcing her son to have sex with her; Even Flow is about the homeless & how they’re dying on the street; Jeremy is about a kid blowing his brains out in front of class…

And Smells Like Teen Spirit.. is about friendship…
AWWWWWWWWWWWWWw wwwwwwwww!!!!

Pearl Jam’s music always went deeper than Nirvanas – and you listing all these rock n roll bands you listen to like the New York Dolls doesn’t give your opinion anymore credit… I’m a music major & I listen to hundreds of artists, from the Sonics & the Velvet Underground, to Mississippi John Hurt & Blind Blake, to Handel & Bach…

And I say Pearl Jam was always better than the Doors & Nirvana.

to Bob Gun Jr. below | 9/20/2007, 11:55 am EST

oh yea, and Kurt isn’t your “dead brother”, Bob Gun, even though I know it makes you feel so cool to write that. Kurt would probably tell you you’re an idiot & to go f yourself.

One Fish Two Fish | 9/20/2007, 12:10 pm EST

Why doesn’t everyone just get off their high horse and except other people’s opinion. It doesn’t matter how diverse your musical opinion is, how many hundreds of bands you listen to, or how credible you are. If someone likes the Doors and Morrison better than Pearl Jam, so be it, if thats what gets them through the day then so be it, its music and it means a lot to them. The fact is, the important thing is that its MUSIC that we’re talking about here, it doesn’t matter that some like Nirvana and some like Pearl Jam, the important thing is that they all LOVE MUSIC!!!

To Vedder hater's | 9/20/2007, 12:16 pm EST

This is a new, very short interview with Eddie Vedder in People magazine.

http://www.people .com/people/article/0,,2005764 1,00.html

It shows you how much of a real man & human being he is.. He’s more of one than any of his haters.

typhoon | 9/20/2007, 1:05 pm EST

It’s doubtful that Nirvana was ever in competition with Pearl Jam. I distinctly remember watching a Nirvana interview in which they said “Why be rivals with Pearl Jam when we can be rivals with Guns ‘n Roses instead!”.

Dr. Funkenstein | 9/20/2007, 11:32 pm EST

Does anyone at Rolling Stone know who John Scofield is? Anyone? Did you know that he just put out a sick new album on Tuesday? Anyone?

Bop Gun Jr. | 9/21/2007, 2:21 am EST

Well, there’s no point, bad taste is bad taste, you can’t teach taste, you can’t fix a tin ear. So go ahead and listen to your Pearl Jam and Van Halen and Metallica albums, I know white people eat that stuff up, like Steve Martin in the Jerk – “This is MY music !”
Eh, you’re right, there’s no point in arguing about music, i’ll stay here in my rarified air with my beautifully tuned ear, you sorry lot live out your meaningless lives, listening to crappy bands, reading (if you read at all)crappy books, watching crappy TV…..i’ll be over head sailing past you nitwits. All this silly nonsense about Pearl motherfucking Jam has just cemented my views of people. America is a wastland of bad taste. And no, Pearl Jam is NOT a good band, Jeremy, Alive, pffffffffffffffffffffff, badly written songs, self conscious whiny stories of abused and neglected kids, pffffffff……PAAAALEASE ! Well, you’d have to have some sense of what good writing was in the first place, and man, I can’t take you back to 3rd grade and try to teach you now, it’s too late. Check out RobertChristgau.com, hell, he even gives Pearl Jam 2 A-’ s !! Then check out his Nirvana reviews, uh huh, all A’s. Ino, I already hear it, “Who cares what some critic thinks”. Well, this critic has the best of ears and is by far the most eloquent of the “rock” writers, he’s a brilliant writer who just happens to write about music. But eh, i’m sure his reviews are too difficult for you.
Well, these few days interacting with the rabble was unpleasant as always. So go back to your soul crushing jobs, terrible relationships, eh, now’s a good time to even quote Jim, who by the way was a terrible human being but good lord, his band was a milllion times better than the bland Pearl Jam – “You’re all a bunch of SLAVES”
And you are slaves to your suburban tastes, slaves to your idiotic jobs……I sneeze in yoru general direction fuckers.

To Bob Gun Jr. | 9/21/2007, 9:54 am EST

You’re the only one who sounds like a slave dude – The irony in the beginning of your horribly written rant is that you state “Go listen to your Pearl Jam, Van Halen & Metallica albums”, dude, I hate Van Halen & Metallica… Pearl Jam is my favorite band, ready for the irony? The vast majority of bands & artists you list liking, Bob Gun, are the same bands I like.

One thing is fact.. Eddie Vedder has accomplished way, way way more in his life than you have at the same age Eddie is now, Bob. No one will remember you when you die, you’re not worth remembering. People may not remember Eddie Vedder 500 years from now, but his music will live on long after your ashes have turned to dust & no one visits your grave anymore.

Jim Allen | 9/21/2007, 3:16 pm EST

Hey Bob GUnn, you are an idiot

Bukowski | 9/22/2007, 12:50 pm EST

“No one will remember you when you die, you’re not worth remembering.”

Mmmmm, yeah, right.

Bukowski | 9/22/2007, 1:20 pm EST

Neither are you

Anonymous | 11/5/2007, 9:34 pm EST

Hahaha!!! I really like this guy (in the video) and often agree with what he says. Couldn’t agree more about You’re Beautiful, lol!!! Too funny! Sooooo true, I hated James Blunt because of that song. Intrestingly, I really like 1973 even though I won’t be running out to buy his album, lol.

Anonymous | 11/5/2007, 9:36 pm EST

Oh, and no that doesn’t make Coldplay any more exciting, lol! ARGH!!! What torture, XY… Zzzz. HELP!

NooDle | 2/19/2009, 1:47 pm EST

james’s blunt first album was great. his second album is awful. you have such a lack of good musical taste! what are you going to say next? that Britney Spears is a good singer???!!! Jesus…. go home and listen to some good music, people! you make me sick.
